Ripple-Type Control for Enhancing Resilience of Networked Physical Systems: Preprint

Distributed control agents have been advocated as an effective means for improving the resiliency of our physical in-frastructures under unexpected events. While purely local control has been shown to be insufficient, centralized optimal resource allocation approaches can be slow. In this context, we put forth a hybrid low-communication saturation-driven protocol for the coordination of control agents that are distributed over a physicalsystem and are allowed to communicate with peers over a 'hot-line' communication network. According to this protocol, agents act upon on local readings unless their control resources have been depleted, in which case they send a beacon for assistance to peer agents. Our ripple-type scheme triggers communication locally only for the agents with saturated resources, and is proved to converge. Moreover, under a monotonicity assumption on the underlying physical law coupling control outputs to inputs, the devised control is proved to converge to a configuration satisfying safe operational constraints. The assumption is shown to hold for voltage control in electric power systems and pressure control in water distribution networks. Numerical tests on both networks corroborate the efficacy of the novel scheme.

Distributed gather/scatter operations across a network of memory nodes

Devices, methods, and systems for distributed gather and scatter operations in a network of memory nodes. A responding memory node includes a memory; a communications interface having circuitry configured to communicate with at least one other memory node; and a controller. The controller includes circuitry configured to receive a request message from a requesting node via the communications interface. The request message indicates a gather or scatter operation, and instructs the responding node to retrieve data elements from a source memory data structure and store the data elements to a destination memory data structure. The controller further includes circuitry configured to transmit a response message to the requesting node via the communications interface. The response message indicates that the data elements have been stored into the destination memory data structure.

Developing Synthetic Distribution Models Using Open-Source Data Sets

The deployment of distributed generation resources at scale with the distribution side of the power system network over the last two decades has spurred a lot of research interest in distribution networks. Given, the sensitive nature of power system data sets, utilities are still reluctant to open-source distribution networks. Although some open-source data sets are available, they may not cover the region of interest. In this paper, we introduce the Synthetic dIstribution Network Generator (SING), new software that allows users to develop synthetic distribution models, using open-source data sets, in any region of interest within the continental US.

Employing Interacting Qubits for Distributed Microgrid Control

To empower flexible and scalable operations, distributed control of multi-inverter microgrids, based on classical communication networks among distributed energy resources, has attracted considerable attention as it can guarantee synchronization and provide suitable remedies to the problem of improper power sharing. Notwithstanding this, resilience of the current schemes on classical communication makes microgrids vulnerable to cyber attacks. Inspired by recent revolutionary breakthroughs in quantum communication, in this paper, we devise a novel synchronization mechanism. We extend the synchronization framework utilized in distributed control algorithms to networks of quantum systems by generating pinning terms and coupling mechanism for the new synchronization rule via exploiting proper quantum jump operators and observables, and show that the quantum system will converge to a time-variant target state. Our devised quantum distributed controller (QDC) gives rise to a novel quantum communication scheme for distributed control of microgrids and enables microgrids to exploit the state-of-the-art quantum communication frameworks as communication infrastructure. Finally, test results on two representative AC and DC networked microgrids validate the efficacy and universality of the quantum distributed control.

Distributed topology control algorithm for multihop wireless netoworks

We present a network initialization algorithmfor wireless networks with distributed intelligence. Each node (agent) has only local, incomplete knowledge and it must make local decisions to meet a predefined global objective. Our objective is to use power control to establish a topology based onthe relative neighborhood graph which has good overall performance in terms of power usage, low interference, and reliability.

High speed network issues in a distributed visualization application

The author examines the issues in creating an UltraNet TCP/IP socket-based distributed application. The visualization computation is performed on a Connection Machine, and the results are rendered using a Silicon Graphics 4D/320 VGX workstation. The UltraNet network facilitates high-bandwidth communication between the computers. Ideally, taking advantage of the UltraNet is no more complex than developing TCP/IP and UNIX BSD socket-type applications on a single machine. In practice, there are several problems in developing an application using the UltraNet. The author identifies potential problems and discusses techniques for overcoming them. The performance of UltraNet communication is measured and found to be 10 MB/s for SGI 4D/320 workstations.

Real Time-Optimal Power Flow-Based Distributed Energy Resource Management System (DERMS)

This project aims to promote lab-proven clean energy technology to commercially scalable versions of the technology, integrate the technology with broader systems, provide extended performance data, and validate the manufacturability and reliability of the technology. The lab-proven technology, RT-OPF DERMS, was developed and validated through previous U.S. Department of Energy-funded efforts, including Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy funding under the Network Optimized Distributed Energy Systems program and Holy-Cross Energy High Impact Project. In the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy Network Optimized Distributed Energy Systems project, the RT-OPF DERMS was developed and implemented in multiple hardware platforms, demonstrating its performance and capabilities in the lab and field environments. The technology was also evaluated and matured via a participation in the U.S. Department of Energy I-Corps program, whose goal is to pair teams of researchers with industry mentors for an intensive 2-month training in which the researchers define technology value propositions, conduct customer discovery interviews, and develop viable market pathways for their technologies. These activities indicate the high technology maturity and Technology Readiness Level of the RT-OPF DERMS.

The Effect of Prosumer Duality on Power Market: The Effect of Market Regulation

Electricity prosumers are energy subsystems that not only consume, but also produce electricity. They are present in distribution level networks as traditional utility customers who have installed distributed energy resources. They are also present in transmission level networks as large conglomerates own both generation assets and large industrial loads. Previous work on the economics of prosumers has demonstrated that prosumers in a market have incentives to behave more competitively compared to producers and consumers in traditional markets. This paper further explores the behavior of prosumers and their response to market policies including the allocation of network losses and the impact of net metering. We extend a Cournot model of a dual prosumer and find that prosumers respond with higher supply quantities if network losses are allocated to demand base. They respond with lower supply quantities if network losses are allocated to supply base. Allocating network losses to demand base also causes equilibrium prices to decline. Markets where prosumers first satisfy their own load and then sell the balance of electricity to the grid have lower quantities and higher prices compared to markets where prosumers buy and sell at locational marginal price.

Power and Communications Hardware-in-the-Loop CPS Architecture and Platform for DER Monitoring and Control Applications: Preprint

The rapid growth of distributed energy resources (DERs) has prompted increasing interest in the monitoring and control of DERs through hybrid smart grid communications. The deployment of communications and computation has transformed the traditional physical power grid into a smart cyber-physical system (CPS). To fully understand the interdependency between physical grid and cyber netowrks, this study designed a power and communications hardware-in-the-loop (PCommHIL) CPS architecture, which enables the flexible verification of DER monitoring and control with hybrid communications architectures and Internet protocols. Design, development and case study of a PCommHIL testbed for the DER coordination are discussed in detail, and the proposed platform integrates DER devices, Advanced Metering Infrastructures (AMIs), and a suite of hybrid communications networks for distribution automation applications. Case study on DER situational awareness and Volt-Var control validates the efficacy of this proposed PCommHIL platform with hybrid communications designs. Results show that the HAN communication technologies play a critical role in hybrid designs and it is the bottleneck for DER applications. High performance communication technologies are highly recommended to be applied in the HAN for enhanced monitoring and real-time control of DERs.

Optical processing for future computer networks

In the development of future data management systems, such as the NASA Space Station, a major problem represents the design and implementation of a high performance communication network which is self-correcting and repairing, flexible, and evolvable. To obtain the goal of designing such a network, it will be essential to incorporate distributed adaptive network control techniques. The present paper provides an outline of the functional and communication network requirements for the Space Station data management system. Attention is given to the mathematical representation of the operations being carried out to provide the required functionality at each layer of communication protocol on the model. The possible implementation of specific communication functions in optics is also considered.

A Novel LDPP-MADDPG Approach for Distributed Power Allocation in mmWave Cellular Networks

This paper considers the problem of distributed beam scheduling and power allocation problem in millimeter- Wave (mmWave) cellular networks, in which multiple Base Stations (BSs) operate as individual operators over a shared spectrum. We propose a novel learning-aided approach that integrates the Lyapunov Drift-Plus-Penalty (LDPP) framework and Multi-agent Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (MADDPG) reinforcement learning algorithms. This offers a powerful approach to learning stable and constraint-aware policies, reaping the joint benefit of both LDPP and MADDPG, in complex multiagent environments. The major challenge for this approach is to integrate these two approaches in a meaningful and effective manner. The key idea to solve this problem is to introduce a novel feature of local observation that incorporates potential negative value of the reward function due to the stochastic constraints introduced by the LDPP framework. Empirical results demonstrate that our proposed scheme outperforms the baseline methods under various conditions.

An ODE-Enabled Distributed Transient Stability Analysis for Networked Microgrids

Networked microgrid (NMG) exhibits noteworthy resiliency and flexibility benefits for the mutual support from neighboring microgrids. With high penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs) and the associated controls, the transient stability analysis of NMGs is of critical significance. To address the issues of computation burdens and privacy in the centralized transient analysis, this paper devises an ordinary differential equation (ODE)-enabled distributed transient stability (DTS) methodology for NMGs. First, an ODE-based microgrid model is established to capture the dynamics in the droop control of DERs as well as network and load. Further, a distributed DTS is devised for the ODE representation of an NMG, allowing a privacy-preserving transient analysis of each microgrid while accurately reconstructing the frequency dynamics under droop controls in all DERs. In conclusion, extensive tests are performed to verify the validity of the ODE-based microgrid model through both dynamic response and eigenvalue analysis, and the efficacy of the DTS algorithm in simulating the large signal responses and the frequent fluctuations in NMG.
