Symmetry-Based Classification of Exact Flat Bands in Single and Bilayer Moiré Systems

Landau levels have been central to the discovery of exotic quantum phases and their unprecedentedly deep roots in geometry and topology. A powerful concept called “vortexability” extends this framework to moiré systems. In this Letter, we show that vortexable systems support not only Landau-level-like flat bands but also entirely new types with distinct topological properties. Notably, while 𝑛𝑏 Landau levels have total Chern number 𝐶 = 𝑛 𝑏 , vortexable moiré systems can host 𝑛 𝑏 flat bands with 𝐶 = 1 ≠ 𝑛 𝑏 . Here, we provide a complete classification of such exact flat bands in single and bilayer systems with Dirac or quadratic band crossings, identifying the symmetry conditions that govern their number and topology. Up to six flat bands can be symmetry protected. We construct explicit wave functions, showing that sublattice-polarized states always sum to Chern number ±1 and satisfy ideal non-Abelian quantum geometry. When the Berry curvature is sharply peaked, we show that a topological heavy-fermion description remains valid—even for bands with high degeneracy.

Chiral anomalies and Wilson fermions

The Wilson formulation of fermions in lattice gauge theory provides a unified description of the chiral anomalies in the standard model. The discrete Dirac operator diagonalizes into a series of 2 × 2 blocks. In each block the possible eigenvalues either form a complex pair or separate into two real eigenvalues that have specific chirality. The collision of these pairs of eigenvalues occurs outside the perturbative region and provides a path between topological sectors.

Lattice calculation of short-range contributions to neutrinoless double-beta decay 𝜋 − → 𝜋 + ⁢𝑒⁢𝑒 at physical pion mass

Neutrinoless double-beta (0⁢𝜈⁢𝛽⁢𝛽) decays provide an excellent probe for determining whether neutrinos are Dirac or Majorana fermions. The short-range matrix elements associated with the 𝜋 − → 𝜋 + ⁢𝑒⁢𝑒 process contribute at leading order in the 0⁢𝜈⁢𝛽⁢𝛽 decay channel 𝑛⁢𝑛 → 𝑝⁢𝑝⁢𝑒⁢𝑒 through pion exchange between nucleons. However, current lattice calculations show notable discrepancies in predicting these short-range contributions. To address this issue, we perform a lattice QCD calculation of the 𝜋 − → 𝜋 + ⁢𝑒⁢𝑒 matrix elements using domain wall fermion ensembles at the physical pion mass generated by the RBC/UKQCD Collaboration. To mitigate contamination from around-the-world effects, we develop a new method to reconstruct and subtract them directly from lattice data. We then perform nonperturbative renormalization in the regularization-independent symmetric momentum-subtraction scheme (RI/SMOM), using the (𝛾 𝜇 , 𝛾 𝜇 ) and ($\not{𝑞}$, $\not{𝑞}$) projectors. Compared with previous studies, this work reduces the uncertainties in the matrix elements and provides an independent cross-check that helps to reconcile the discrepancies among previous lattice calculations.

Relativistic configuration-interaction and many-body-perturbation-theory calculations of U i hyperfine constants

Neutral uranium (U i) is a very difficult atom for theoretical calculations due to a large number (six) of valence electrons, strong valence-valence and valence-core correlations, high density of states, and relativistic effects. Configuration-interaction many-body perturbation theory (CI-MBPT) can efficiently treat valence-core correlations and relativistic effects, but because the formalism was developed for a Dirac-Hartree-Fock (DHF) starting potential that does not contain valence electrons, quite large CI space is needed to compensate for the + 6 charge of such a potential. Much more efficient is the relativistic configuration-interaction (RCI) approach, which uses a relatively accurate starting DHF potential that includes some valence electrons to make the valence-electron Hamiltonian diagonally dominated for some states. Here we report calculations of U i hyperfine constants of several low-energy states using the RCI method with the starting potential that includes four f valence electrons. With this starting potential, it is possible to use the single-configuration approximation or small basis sets to obtain quite accurate results for hyperfine-structure constants. In fact, by scaling the nuclear magnetic moment, the agreement for five levels was within 5% and a new magnetic moment can be recommended, 0.43(2). When two states are mixed, it is difficult to predict the exact mixing fractions, so in this case we proposed a method in which the mixing fraction is found by optimization of one parameter in the MBPT correction to obtain correct g factors. The resulting hyperfine constants are significantly improved. Finally, the CI-MBPT approach was also tested, with some success for low-energy states, with the limited basis set. The methods investigated here can be further developed to include more extensive data sets to improve accuracy and can be applied to other atoms and for calculations of other properties, for example, relevant to fundamental symmetry tests.

Strong-field physics in three-dimensional topological insulators

We investigate theoretically the strong-field regime of light-matter interactions in the topological-insulator class of quantum materials. In particular, we focus on the process of nonperturbative high-order harmonic generation from the paradigmatic three-dimensional topological insulator bismuth selenide (Bi 2 Se 3 ) subjected to intense midinfrared laser fields. We analyze the contributions from the spin-orbit-coupled bulk states and the topological surface bands separately and reveal a major difference in how their harmonic yields depend on the ellipticity of the laser field. Furthermore, bulk harmonics show a monotonic decrease in their yield as the ellipticity increases, in a manner reminiscent of high harmonic generation in gaseous media. However, the surface contribution exhibits a highly nontrivial dependence, culminating with a maximum for circularly polarized fields. We attribute the observed anomalous behavior to (i) the enhanced amplitude and the circular pattern of the interband dipole and the Berry connections in the vicinity of the Dirac point and (ii) the influence of the higher-order, hexagonal warping terms in the Hamiltonian, which are responsible for the hexagonal deformation of the energy surface at higher momenta. The latter are associated directly with spin-orbit-coupling parameters. Our results thus establish the sensitivity of strong-field-driven high harmonic emission to the topology of the band structure as well as to the manifestations of spin-orbit interaction.

Unusual behavior of Cooper minima of n s subshells in high- Z atoms

Here, a study of Cooper minima (CM) arising from the photoionization of 6$\textit{s}$, 5$\textit{s}$, and 4$\textit{s}$ subshells of high-$\textit{Z}$ atoms has been performed using Dirac-Fock (DF), two-channel relativistic-random-phase approximation (RRPA), and fully coupled RRPA. The results show huge splittings between $ns → εp_{3/2}$ and $ns → εp_{1/2}$ CM which increase with $\textit{Z}$ owing primarily to the relativistic interactions (spin orbit) that are attractive for the $εp_{1/2}$ final state but repulsive for the corresponding $εp_{3/2}$. In addition, it was found that correlation in the form of interchannel coupling (essentially configuration interaction in the final continuum states) plays a huge role in determining the location of the CM. For 6$\textit{s}$ photoionization, the 6$s → εp_{3/2}$ and 6$s → εp_{1/2}$ CM behave completely different as a function of $\textit{Z}$ . It was also found that for 5$\textit{s}$ and 4$\textit{s}$ photoionization, the CM move below the threshold, with increasing $\textit{Z}$ , and, at high enough $\textit{Z}$ , the 5s → εp3/2 and 4s → εp3/2 CM re-emerge into the continuum. The calculations have been carried out for the $\textit{ns}$ subshells of Hg ($\textit{Z}$ = 80), Rn ($\textit{Z}$ = 86), Ra ($\textit{Z}$ = 88), No ($\textit{Z}$ = 102), Cn ($\textit{Z}$ = 112), and Og ($\textit{Z}$ = 118).

Gravitational-wave-to-matter coupling of superfluid Fermi gases near unitarity

It is well known that gravitational waves distort equilibrium matter globally, making them amenable to detection with laser interferometers. Less well known is the fact that gravitational waves create local nonequilibrium stresses inside matter, which could conceivably lead to alternative detection methods. The gravitational wave-to-matter coupling κ is a transport coefficient depending on the material and is poorly known for most substances. Here, in the present work, we calculate κ for a superfluid Fermi gas near unitarity using large-N techniques, finding κ= $\frac{n}{12m}$, with n the number density and m the mass of the fermion, matching the result for free Dirac fermions at zero temperature. Our prediction is amenable to nonperturbative theoretical as well as experimental tests.

Attosecond time delay in atomic photoionization: Angular-dependent transition from dipole to quadrupole and spin-flip dynamics

The angular distribution of attosecond Wigner time delay has been investigated including both quadrupole and relativistic effects using the relativistic-random-phase approximation that is based on the Dirac equation and includes significant aspects of many-body correlations. Here the results show a dramatic evolution of the time delay from (essentially nonrelativistic) dipole to quadrupole and spin-flip dynamics as a function of angle, thereby providing a venue for studying these interactions at the attosecond level.

Anomalous thermal effect in Zr Te 5 observed via photothermal measurements

In this study, we explore the magneto-thermoelectric power (MTP) of $ZrTe$ 5 , a canonical Dirac semimetal, through a novel photothermal technique. Unlike conventional thermoelectric studies that rely on on-chip heaters and are limited by fabrication processes, especially for stress-sensitive materials, our approach utilizes photothermal effects to induce temperature gradients. Our experiments, applying a magnetic field approximately parallel and transverse to the photocurrent detection direction, reveal that the photothermal method efficiently and reliably extracts both diagonal and off-diagonal components of the thermoelectric coefficient of $ZrTe$ 5 . Here, we observe that the longitudinal MTP reproduces features previously reported in thermal transport studies, while the photoinduced transverse MTP confirms the anomalous Nernst effect. This photothermal measurement technique opens new avenues for investigating transport properties in a wide range of quantum materials, both in 3D and 2D systems.

Enhanced hydrodynamic transport in near magic angle twisted bilayer graphene

Using the semiclassical quantum Boltzmann theory and employing the Dirac model with twist angle-dependent Fermi velocity, we obtain results for the electrical resistivity, the electronic thermal resistivity, the Seebeck coefficient, and the Wiedemann-Franz ratio in near magic angle twisted bilayer graphene, as functions of doping density (around the charge-neutrality point) and modified Fermi velocity $\tilde{v}$. The $\tilde{v}$ dependence of the relevant scattering mechanisms, i.e., electron-hole Coulomb, long-range impurities, and acoustic gauge phonons, is considered in detail. We find a range of twist angles and temperatures, where the combined effect of momentum-nonconserving collisions (long-range impurities and phonons) is minimal, opening a window for the observation of strong hydrodynamic transport. In this work, several experimental signatures are identified, such as a sharp dependence of the electric resistivity on doping density and a large enhancement of the Wiedemann-Franz ratio and the Seebeck coefficient.

Indications for Lifshitz transitions in the nodal-line semimetal ZrSiTe induced by interlayer interaction

The layered material ZrSiTe is currently extensively investigated as a nodal-line semimetal with Dirac-like band crossings protected by nonsymmorphic symmetry close to the Fermi energy. A recent infrared spectroscopy study on ZrSiTe under external pressure found anomalies in the optical response, providing hints for pressure-induced phase transitions at ≈4.1 and ≈ 6.5GPa. By pressure-dependent Raman spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction measurements combined with electronic band structure calculations we find indications for two pressure-induced Lifshitz transitions with major changes in the Fermi surface topology in the absence of lattice symmetry changes. These electronic phase transitions can be attributed to the enhanced interlayer interaction induced by external pressure. Overall, our findings demonstrate the crucial role of the interlayer distance for the electronic properties of layered van der Waals topological materials.

Temperature dependence of electron-phonon interactions in vanadium

First-principles calculations were used to study the Fermi surface of body-centered cubic vanadium at elevated temperatures. Supercell calculations accounted for effects of thermal atom displacements on band energies, and band unfolding was used to project the spectral weight of the electron states into the Brillouin zone of a standard bcc unit cell. An electronic topological transition (ETT, or Lifshitz transition) occurred near the Γ point with increasing temperature, but the large thermal smearings from the atomic disorder and the Fermi-Dirac distribution reduced the effect of this ETT on the electron-phonon interactions. The phonon dispersions showed thermal stiffening of their Kohn anomalies near the Γ point and of the longitudinal N phonon mode. Finally, in general the effects of the ETT were overcome by the thermal smearing of the Fermi surface that reduces the spanning vector densities for anomalous phonon modes.

Topological magnon bands in a room-temperature kagome magnet

Topological magnon is a vibrant research field gaining more and more attention in the past few years. Among many theoretical proposals and limited experimental studies, ferromagnetic kagome lattice emerges as one of the most elucidating systems. Here we report neutron scattering studies of YMn 6 Sn 6 , a metallic system consisting of ferromagnetic kagome planes. This system undergoes a commensurate-to-incommensurate antiferromagnetic phase transition upon cooling with the incommensurability along the out-of-plane direction. We observe magnon band gap opening at the symmetry-protected K points and ascribe this feature to the antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions. Our observation supports the existence of topological Dirac magnons in both the commensurate collinear and incommensurate coplanar magnetic orders, which is further corroborated by symmetry analysis. This finding places YMn 6 Sn 6 as a promising candidate for room-temperature magnon spintronics applications.

Landau quantization of multilayer graphene on a Haldane sphere

Here, we consider the problem of multilayer graphene on a Haldane sphere and determine the Landau level spectrum for this family of systems. This serves as a generalization of the Landau quantization problem of ordinary nonrelativistic Haldane sphere and spherical graphene, or Dirac-like particles on a sphere. The Hamiltonian is diagonalized in a concise algebraic fashion exploiting two mutually commuting SU(2) algebras of the problem. Additionally, using exact wave functions we demonstrate computation of Haldane pseudopotentials in the second Landau level. These exact solutions add to the current toolkits of the numerical studies on fractional quantum Hall effects in systems of graphite multilayers.

Linear magnetoresistance induced by intra-scattering semiclassics of Bloch electrons

Weak-field magnetoresistance has seen a revived interest due to the distinct role played by the momentum-space Berry curvature of Bloch electrons. While most previous studies in this regard focus on the inter-scattering motion of semiclassical Bloch electrons in electromagnetic fields, the intra-scattering effects of the semiclassical dynamics augmented by the Berry curvature, magnetic moment, and shift vector on the magnetoresistance have been largely overlooked. Here, we uncover that these intra-scattering effects, which are neglected in the field-independent relaxation time approximation to the Boltzmann collision integral, can be as important as the inter-scattering ones. In this work, concrete calculations on the two-dimensional gapped Dirac model show that the sign of the negative linear magnetoresistance given by the Berry curvature alone is reversed when one considers the magnetic moment and shift vector.

Charge density wave order on a $\textit{π}$-flux square lattice

The effect of electron-phonon coupling on Dirac fermions was recently explored numerically on a honeycomb lattice, leading to precise quantitative values for the finite temperature and quantum critical points. In this paper, we use the unbiased determinant quantum Monte Carlo method to study the Holstein model on a half-filled staggered-flux square lattice and compare the results with the honeycomb lattice geometry, presenting results for a range of phonon frequencies 0.1 ≤ $\omega$ ≤ 2.0. In this work, we find that the interactions give rise to charge density wave order, but only above a finite coupling strength $\gamma_{\text{crit}}$. The transition temperature is evaluated and presented in a $T_{c^{–λ}}$ phase diagram. An accompanying mean-field theory calculation also predicts the existence of a quantum phase transition, but at a substantially smaller coupling strength.

Electronic and magnetic properties of the topological semimetal candidate NdSbTe

ZrSiS-type materials represent a large material family with unusual coexistence of topological nonsymmorphic Dirac fermions and nodal-line fermions. As a special group of ZrSiS family, Ln SbTe ( L n = lanthanide rare - earth ) compounds provide a unique opportunity to explore new quantum phases due to the intrinsic magnetism induced by Ln . Here we report the single-crystal growth and characterization of NdSbTe, a previously unexplored Ln SbTe compound. NdSbTe has an antiferromagnetic ground state with field-driven metamagnetic transitions similar to other known Ln SbTe , but exhibits distinct enhanced electronic correlations characterized by large a Sommerfeld coefficient of 115 mJ / mol K 2 , which is the highest among the known Ln SbTe compounds. Furthermore, our transport studies have revealed the coupling with magnetism and signatures of Kondo localization. All these findings establish NdSbTe as a platform for observing phenomena arising from the interplay between magnetism, topology, and electron correlations.

Fermi surface topology and nontrivial Berry phase in the flat-band semimetal Pd 3 Pb

A study of the Fermi surface of the putative topological semimetal Pd 3 Pb has been carried out using Shubnikov–de Haas (SdH) oscillations measured in fields of up to 60 T. Pd 3 Pb has garnered attention in the community due to a peculiar Fermi surface that has been proposed theoretically by Ahn, Pickett, and Lee, Phys. Rev. B 98 , 035130 (2018) to host a dispersionless band along X - Γ as well as multiple triply degenerate band crossings that, under the influence of spin-orbit coupling, lead to ten fourfold degenerate Dirac points. Analysis of the SdH oscillation data verifies the calculated multisheet Fermi surface, revealing a Γ centered spheroid that had not been resolved experimentally in prior studies. A comprehensive, angle-dependent analysis of the phase of the SdH oscillations convincingly demonstrates a nontrivial Berry phase for two bands along Γ - R , supporting the theoretical predictions, while simultaneously evidencing interference between extremal orbits that mimics a trivial Berry phase at intermediate angles.
