Mechanical testing - In situ fracture device for Auger electron spectroscopy

An in situ fracture device for Auger spectroscopy is described. The device is designed to handle small tensile specimens or small double-cantilever beam specimens and is fully instrumented with load and displacement transducers so that quantitative stress-strain measurements can be made directly. Some initial test results for specimens made from 4130 and 1020 steel are presented. Results indicate that impurity segregation at interfaces other than grain boundary may play a significant role in the mechanism of ductile fracture.

Optimum load device for DMOS integrated circuits

Depletion-mode load devices can be integrated with DMOS transistors without any extra diffusions or ion implantation processing steps by judicious choice of the substrate crystal orientation and resistivity. For low voltage operation line-type 1, 1, 1 crystal orientation should be used. The line-type 1, 1, 1 crystal orientation also yields a higher transconductance for the DMOS transistor than the line-type 1, 0, 0 orientation. The geometry of the load device and the DMOS transistor can be made ratioless to conserve area. Self-aligned gates, hitherto considered incompatible with DMOS transistors, have been incorporated in the structure. The experimental DMOS inverters, using a conservative design, have achieved 4-ns propagation delay, 1.3-V operation, and 2-pJ propagation delay-power dissipation product.

A Z-axis recumbent rotating device for use in parabolic flight

A prototype apparatus for exposing persons to rotation about their Z-axis in parabolic flight is described. Although it resembles earth-horizontal axis devices, added features are its strength and portability, and the fiber glass 'couch' with adjustable elements providing support and restraint. Even under ground-based conditions, this device provides unique opportunities for investigations involving not only canalicular and macular mechanoreceptors, but also touch, pressure, and kinesthetic receptor systems.

Linear charge coupled device detector array for imaging light propagating in an integrated thin-film optical waveguide

Device design, fabrication, and operation of a linear charge coupled device (CCD) detector array integrated with a thin film optical waveguide and applications of this structure to integrated optical signal processing and fiber optical communications were discussed. A two phase, overlapping-gate CCD is connected in parallel by means of a series of gates to an array of photodiodes. The photodiode provides an electrode free surface region so that a highly efficient waveguide detector coupling technique can be implemented. A thermally-oxidized layer of SiO2 forms an effective substrate for the optical waveguide.

Development of a slicing device for Apollo-Soyuz Test Project (ASTP) electrophoresis technology experiment MA-011

The electrophoresis of six columns was accomplished on the Apollo-Soyuz test Project. After separation, these columns were frozen in orbit and were returned for ground-based analyses. One major goal of the MA-011 experiment was the assessment of the separation achieved in orbit by slicing these frozen columns. The slicing of the frozen columns required a new device. The development of that device is described.

Survey and Experimental Testing of Nongravimetric Mass Measurement Devices

Documentation presented describes the design, testing, and evaluation of an accelerated gravimetric balance, a low mass air bearing oscillator of the spring-mass type, and a centrifugal device for liquid mass measurement. A direct mass readout method was developed to replace the oscillation period readout method which required manual calculations to determine mass. A protoype 25 gram capacity micro mass measurement device was developed and tested.

Regenerable device for scrubbing breathable air of CO2 and moisture without special heat exchanger equipment

The device concerns the circulation of cabin air through canisters which absorb and adsorb carbon dioxide, together with excess moisture, and return the scrubbed air to the cabin for recirculation. A coating on an inert substrate in granular form absorbs and adsorbs the impurities at standard temperatures and pressures, but desorbs such impurities at low pressures (vacuum) and standard temperatures. This fact is exploited by making the device in a stack of cells consisting of layers or cells which are isolated from one another flow-wise and are connected to separate manifolds and valving systems into two separate subsets. A first subset may be connected for the flow breathable air therethrough until the polyethyleneimine of its cells is saturated with CO2 and H2O. During the same period the second subset of cells is manifolded to a vacuum source.

Irradiate-anneal screening of total dose effects in semiconductor devices

Judicious choice of radiation dose and parameter change acceptance criteria, absence of anomalous anneal phenomena, and absence of anomalous reirradiation effects are recognized as essential for a successful irradiation-anneal (IRAN) screening procedure to ensure that no device will fall, upon reirradiation, above parametric limits assigned for the worst case application. Reirradiation and irradiation-anneal behavior of various semiconductor devices are compared and those that do not lend themselves to IRAN screening are singled out. Information needed to judge the suitability of an IRAN type screening program is detailed. Reasons for success of the limited IRAN screening of flight parts for the Mariner Jupiter/Saturn (MJS '77) spacecraft are indicated.

Optimal maneuvering and fine pointing control of large space telescope with a new magnetically suspended, single gimballed momentum storage device

This paper considers the application of an Annular Momentum Control Device (AMCD) to both fine pointing and large-angle maneuvering of a large space telescope (LST). The AMCD, which consists principally of a spinning rim suspended in noncontacting electromagnetic bearings, represents a new development in momentum storage devices. A nonlinear mathematical model of the AMCD/LST system is derived. An optimal stochastic fine-pointing controller is designed via LQG theory and the minimum-energy maneuvering problem is solved via a gradient technique. Number of state variable and control variable constraints, as well as all trigonometric nonlinearities, are considered in the latter part.

A methodology for experimentally based determination of gap shrinkage and effective lifetimes in the emitter and base of p-n junction solar cells and other p-n junction devices

An experimentally based methodology that determines the effective gap shrinkage and lifetime in the emitter of a p-n junction solar cell is described which provides an experimental means for assessing the importance of gap shrinkage relative to that of large recombination rates in the highly doped emitter. The base lifetime is also determined. The methodology pertains to a solar cell after the junction is formed, so that each material parameter determined includes the effects of the processing used in junction fabrication. The methodology consists of strategy and procedures for designing experiments and interpreting data consistently with the physical mechanisms governing device behavior. This careful linking to the device physics uncover the material parameters concealed in the data. To illustrate the procedures, they are applied to an n(+)-p solar cell having substrate resistivity of about 0.1 ohm-cm.

Inlet turbulence and fan noise measured in an anechoic wind tunnel and statically with an inlet flow control device

Turbulence and acoustic measurements were taken in the NASA-Lewis anechoic wind tunnel - a facility which has demonstrated the blade passage tone cutoff phenomena with forward velocity. Turbulence data were taken in a subsonic inlet at various fan speeds under static and forward velocity conditions. A honeycomb/screen flow control device was placed over the inlet during static tests to modify the inflow in an attempt to simulate flight conditions. Acoustic levels of the blade passage tone along with transverse turbulence intensities were reduced with forward velocity. The flow control device reduced the blade passage tone to an intermediate level between those levels associated with static and forward velocity operation.
