Ab initio Potential Energy Surface for H-H2

Ab initio calculations employing large basis sets are performed to determine an accurate potential energy surface for H-H2 interactions for a broad range of separation distances. At large distances, the spherically averaged potential determined from the calculated energies agrees well with the corresponding results determined from dispersion coefficients; the van der Waals well depth is predicted to be 75 +/- (mu)E(sub h). Large basis sets have also been applied to reexamine the accuracy of theoretical repulsive potential energy surfaces. Multipolar expansions of the computed H-H2 potential energy surface are reported for four internuclear separation distances (1.2, 1.401, 1.449, and 1.7a(sub 0) of the hydrogen molecule. The differential elastic scattering cross section calculated from the present results is compared with the measurements from a crossed beam experiment.

Free-Free Transitions in the Presence of Laser Fields and Debye Potential at Very Low Incident Electron Energies

We study the free-free transition in electron-helium ion in the ground state and embedded in a Debye potential in the presence of an external laser field at very low incident electron energies. The laser field is treated classically while the collision dynamics is treated quantum mechanically. The laser field is chosen as monochromatic, linearly polarized and homogeneous. The incident electron is considered to be dressed by the laser field in a nonperturbative manner by choosing Volkov wave function for it. The scattering wave function for the incident electron on the target embedded in a Debye potential is solved numerically by taking into account the effect of electron exchange. We calculate the laser-assisted differential and total cross sections for free-free transition for absorption/emission of a single photon or no photon exchange. The results will be presented at the conference.

Free-Free Transitions of e-H System Inside a Dense Plasma Irradiated by a Laser Field at Very Low Incident Electron Energies

The free-free transition is studied for an electron-hydrogen in the ground state at low incident energies in the presence of an external homogenous, monochromatic, and linearly polarized laser-field inside a hot dense plasma. The effect of plasma screening is considered in the Debye-Huckel approximation. The calculations are performed in the soft photon limit, assuming that the plasma frequency is much higher than the laser frequency. The incident electron is considered to be dressed by the laser field in a nonperturbative manner by choosing the Volkov solutions in both the initial and final channels. The space part of the scattering wave function for the electron is solved numerically by taking into account the electron exchange. The laser-assisted differential and total cross sections are calculated for single-photon absorption /emission and no photon exchange in the soft photon limit, the laser intensity being much less than the atomic field intensity. The calculations have been carried out for various values of Debye parameter, ranging from 0.005 to 0.12. A strong suppression is noted in the laser-assisted cross sections as compared to the field-free situation. A significant difference is noted for the singlet and triplet cross sections. The suppression is much more in the triplet states.

Advancing the Theory of Nuclear Data Evaluations [Abstract]

We present recent advances in the R-matrix formalism as well as the Bayesian evaluation framework for improved nuclear data evaluations. The advances in the R matrix formalism include: 1) direct processes, 2) doorway, as well as multistep, processes, and 3) various forms of the Reich-Moore approximation for eliminated capture channels. Furthermore, to address unreasonably small posterior uncertainties often encountered in nuclear data evaluations of large data sets using the conventional form of the Bayes’ theorem, we introduce imperfections (of the data or the model) as a formal evaluation tool for taming the evaluated uncertainties in harmony with Bayes’ theorem. These theoretical advances were motivated by the nuclear data evaluations of differential resolved resonance cross section data using the code SAMMY, as well as the integral benchmark experiments using the SCALE code system, being performed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory for the Nuclear Criticality Safety Program. Some pedagogical applications of the new formalism, as well as a snapshot of the SAMMY modernization efforts, will be presented.

Measurement of double-differential charged-current Drell-Yan cross-sections at high transverse masses in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

This paper presents a first measurement of the cross-section for the charged-current Drell-Yan process pp → W ± → ℓ ± ν above the resonance region, where ℓ is an electron or muon. The measurement is performed for transverse masses, $m$$^{W}_{T}$, between 200 GeV and 5000 GeV, using a sample of 140 fb −1 of pp collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of = 13 TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC during 2015–2018. The data are presented single differentially in transverse mass and double differentially in transverse mass and absolute lepton pseudorapidity. A test of lepton flavour universality shows no significant deviations from the Standard Model. The electron and muon channel measurements are combined to achieve a total experimental precision of 3% at low $m$$^{W}_{T}$. The single- and double differential W-boson charge asymmetries are evaluated from the measurements. A comparison to next-to-next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD predictions using several recent parton distribution functions and including next-to-leading-order electroweak effects indicates the potential of the data to constrain parton distribution functions. The data are also used to constrain four fermion operators in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory formalism, in particular the lepton-quark operator Wilson coefficient $c$$^{(c)}_{ℓq}$.

Centrality dependence of J /ψ and ψ (2S) production and nuclear modification in p-Pb collisions at \( \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} \) = 8 . 16 TeV

The inclusive production of the J/ ψ and ψ (2S) charmonium states is studied as a function of centrality in p-Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair \( \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} \) = 8 . 16 TeV at the LHC. The measurement is performed in the dimuon decay channel with the ALICE apparatus in the centre-of-mass rapidity intervals – 4 . 46 < y cms < – 2 . 96 (Pb-going direction) and 2 . 03 < y cms < 3 . 53 (p-going direction), down to zero transverse momentum ( p T ). The J/ ψ and ψ (2S) production cross sections are evaluated as a function of the collision centrality, estimated through the energy deposited in the zero degree calorimeter located in the Pb-going direction. The p T -differential J/ ψ production cross section is measured at backward and forward rapidity for several centrality classes, together with the corresponding average \( \left\langle {p}_{\mathrm{T}}\right\rangle \) and \( \left\langle {p}_{\mathrm{T}}^2\right\rangle \) values. The nuclear effects affecting the production of both charmonium states are studied using the nuclear modification factor. In the p-going direction, a suppression of the production of both charmonium states is observed, which seems to increase from peripheral to central collisions. In the Pb-going direction, however, the centrality dependence is different for the two states: the nuclear modification factor of the J/ ψ increases from below unity in peripheral collisions to above unity in central collisions, while for the ψ (2S) it stays below or consistent with unity for all centralities with no significant centrality dependence. The results are compared with measurements in p-Pb collisions at \( \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} \) = 5 . 02 TeV and no significant dependence on the energy of the collision is observed. Finally, the results are compared with theoretical models implementing various nuclear matter effects.

Validity of approximate methods in molecular scattering - Thermal HCl-He collisions

Accurate close coupling scattering calculations are presented for thermal energy HCl-He collisions. The interaction potential is obtained from the Gordon-Kim electron gas model, adjusted to have the correct long-range multipole form. A variety of phenomenological cross sections are computed from the close coupling S matrix, and these are compared with results from several commonly employed approximate methods. In particular, it is found that the total integral, total differential, and gas kinetic cross sections are accurately predicted by the central field approximation which retains just the spherical average of the interaction. Integral inelastic cross sections are represented quite accurately by the coupled states approximation of McGuire and Kouri, but only qualitatively by the effective potential method of Rabitz.

Measurement of Neutral-Current $\pi^0$ Cross Section in MicroBooNE using Wire-Cell Reconstruction

This note presents the extraction of flux-averaged total and differential neutral-current $π^0$ cross section measurements, based on the Wiener-SVD unfolding method, using the MicroBooNE Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LArTPC) and the Wire-Cell reconstruction paradigm. This measurement is critical for single-photon searches as neutral-current pion production represents one of the largest sources of background. We report the results for an exposure corresponding to 5.327 × 10 19 protons-on-target (POT).

Energy dependent nuclear suppression from gluon saturation in exclusive vector meson production

We calculate exclusive J / ψ photoproduction at high energies in the color glass condensate approach. The results are compared to the center-of-mass energy dependent γ + A → J / ψ + A cross sections extracted from measurements in ultraperipheral heavy ion collisions at RHIC and LHC. We predict strong saturation-driven nuclear suppression at high energies, while LHC data prefer even stronger suppression. We explore effects of nucleon shaped fluctuations and show that the most recent measurement of the | t | -differential incoherent J / ψ cross section prefers large event-by-event fluctuations of the nucleon substructure in heavy nuclei, comparable to that found for a free proton. Forward modeling approach to nuclear reaction cross sections: Applications in neutron inelastic scattering

The development of nuclear reaction models for the production of evaluated nuclear data has traditionally been performed by comparing measured cross sections with predictions from reaction model codes whose physical input parameters are adjusted to obtain the best agreement between measured and modeled results. To more directly probe reaction model inputs, this work introduces a forward modeling approach to experimental reaction cross-section determination, where the most important physical input parameters to reaction model calculations are obtained via 𝜒 2 minimization between measured and calculated observables. This was demonstrated using data collected by the Gamma Energy Neutron Energy Spectrometer for Inelastic Scattering (GENESIS) at the 88-inch cyclotron at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, a detection array consisting of organic liquid scintillators and high-purity germanium (HPGe) detectors. Using a broad-spectrum neutron beam and a 99.98%-enriched 56 Fe target, GENESIS was used to perform a simultaneous measurement of 56 Fe 𝛾-ray production cross sections and secondary neutron energy and angle distributions. The results of the forward modeling approach to the determination of energy-differential 𝛾-ray production cross sections for the yrast 4 + → 2 + and 6 + → 4 + transitions, as well as eight other off-yrast transitions, were compared against those obtained using conventional techniques, and the results are in good agreement. In addition to discrete 𝛾-ray yield total scattered neutron energy-angular distributions as a function of incident neutron energy were also obtained using forward modeling and found to agree with evaluated data, with the exception of elastic scattering at small angles. The fitted reaction model parameters obtained through forward modeling were also used to calculate the cross section for the unobserved (𝑛, 2⁢𝑛) reaction; excellent agreement with the current evaluation was obtained, providing a validation of the predictive capabilities of the forward model approach. This work bridges the gap between nuclear data experiment and evaluation by providing a new means for extracting inelastic neutron-scattering cross sections and neutron-induced 𝛾-ray production data while directly probing reaction model physics.

Measurement of J/ψ production in association with a W± boson with pp data at 8 TeV

A measurement of the production of a prompt J/ψ meson in association with a W ± boson with W± → μν and J/ψ → μ + μ - is presented for J/ψ transverse momenta in the range 8.5–150 GeV and rapidity |y J/ψ | < 2.1 using ATLAS data recorded in 2012 at the LHC. The data were taken at a proton-proton centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb -1 . The ratio of the prompt J/ψ plus W ± cross-section to the inclusive W ± cross-section is presented as a differential measurement as a function of J/ψ transverse momenta and compared with theoretical predictions using different double-parton-scattering cross-sections.

Cross-Sectional Deformations of Monocoque Beams and Their Effects on the Natural Vibration Frequencies

The variational principle, differential equations, and boundary conditions governing the cross-sectional distortions due to inertia loading of a two-dimensional model of a thin monocoque wing are shown. A theoretical analysis of this simplified model is made in order to determine the nature of the coupling between the cross-sectional modes and the spanwise deformation modes. General solutions are obtained in finite-difference form for arbitrary cross sections and an exact solution is presented for a parabolic-arc cross section of constant cover thickness. The application of these results in evaluating the coupled frequencies of the actual structure is discussed. Frequencies evaluated for a parabolic-arc monocoque beam show good agreement with experimental values.

Phenomenological treatments of cross-sections for proton and hydrogen impact below 1 keV on molecular nitrogen

An analytic independent-particle model is used to construct static potentials to describe the interaction of hydrogen-like ions with atoms and molecules. Parameters of the ion-atom potential are determined from ab initio total energy minimization procedure. The elastic scattering of He(+) from Ne and Ar is investigated as a test case and comparison is made with experiment. The model is then used in conjunction with low energy H(+)-N2 experimental data to construct differential and total cross-sections for the scattering of protons and hydrogen in the energy range of 10 eV to 1 keV from molecular nitrogen. Analytic forms are used to parametrize these cross-sections to facilitate their use in the calculation of energy deposition by protons and hydrogen atoms in atmospheric gases.

First Measurement of Differential Charged Current Quasielastic–like $\nu_\mu$ -Argon Scattering Cross Sections with the MicroBooNE Detector

Current and future generation neutrino oscillation experiments aim towards a high-precision mea- surement of the oscillation parameters and that requires an unprecedented understanding of neutrino-nucleus scattering. Charged-current quasi-elastic (CCQE) scattering is the process in which the neutrino produces a charged lepton and removes a single intact nucleon from the nu- cleus without producing any additional particles. For existing and forthcoming accelerator–based neutrino experiments, CCQE interactions are either the dominant process or part of the signal.

Cross section for production of low-energy electron-positron pairs by relativistic heavy ions

Starting with the lowest-order unscreened QED matrix element for electron-positron pair production by heavy charged particles, the paper calculates the cross section for this process differential in all independent variables and valid for all pair energies small compared to the incident particle energy. Integration over the possible emission angles of one of the pair members gives an expression that is valid for low-energy pairs that can be compared with previous work based on the Weizsaecker-Williams method. Integration over the possible angles of the other pair member then yields an expression identical to one derived by Racah. The high energy-transfer limit of the expression for the cross section integrated over electron and positron angles is found to be identical to that of Kelner in the unscreened case.
