Here, we present a comparison of lithium metal films produced via rolling and thermal evaporation using synchrotron hard X-ray microtomography. In past studies of rolled lithium metal foils, a large number of C, O, and N impurities were found and identified as the key cause for failure in lithium metal cells. In this comparison, the X-ray tomography data show that the evaporated lithium metal films have an average impurity concentration of 19 particles/mm3 in comparison to 1350 particles/mm3 in the rolled lithium metal. An analysis of the inner substrate/lithium interface and outer lithium surface of the thermally evaporated film shows a much greater concentration of impurities at these interfaces, further emphasizing the importance of interface engineering in producing high-quality lithium metal batteries. Furthermore, we show that, if surface contamination can be avoided, it is possible to obtain lithium films with no impurities detectable by synchrotron hard X-ray tomography.
CO 2 as a C1 feedstock is receiving increasing attention, but it typically exists in dilute or impure streams. The capture and conversion of CO 2 to fuels or chemicals using carbon-neutral energy mitigates carbon emissions when CO 2 is captured from point sources and results in net or negative carbon emissions when CO 2 is obtained by direct air capture. Additionally, CO 2 capture and conversion steps are typically viewed as separate processes that optimize either capture and concentration or catalytic conversions of pure streams of CO 2 .
Lithium garnet (Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 , LLZO) based solid electrolytes are leading candidate materials for all-solid-state batteries with lithium metal anodes because of their high ionic conductivity, high mechanical toughness, and superior electrochemical stability. While doping LLZO with Al and Ga increases its ionic conductivity by stabilizing the cubic phase, the impact of dopants on its (electro)chemical stability at the interfaces with Li metal is critical. Here, our study of differences between Al- and Ga-doped LLZO when interfaced with lithium metal using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory shows a higher propensity of Ga to move across LLZO interface with Li metal and form Ga-Li alloy. Additionally, neutron diffraction reveals loss of cubic phase resulting from the loss of dopant that explains electrochemical behavior differences between Ga- and Al-doped LLZO. Overall, our study reveals the key role of dopant chemistry in enabling stable solid electrolyte materials for all-solid-state batteries.
A better understanding of amorphous aluminum oxide’s structure and electronic properties is obtained through combined experimental and computational approaches. Grazing incidence X-ray scattering measurements were carried out on aluminum oxide thin films grown using thermal atomic layer deposition. The corresponding pair distribution functions (PDFs) showed structures similar to previously reported PDFs of solid-state amorphous alumina and molten alumina. Structural models based on crystalline alumina polymorphs (PDFgui) and amorphous alumina (molecular dynamics, MD) were examined for structural comparisons to the experimental PDF data. Smaller MD models were optimized and verified against larger models to allow for quantum chemical electronic structure calculations. The electronic structure of the amorphous alumina models yields additional insight into the band structure and electronic defects present in amorphous alumina that are not present in crystalline samples.

Electrochemical CO 2 reduction has promise as a technology that could help society reach carbon neutrality while producing valuable fuels and chemicals. Herein, the electrochemical synthesis of methyl formate, a product not observed in aqueous CO 2 electrolysis, has been analyzed by a rigorous technoeconomic model to evaluate its commercial viability. Methyl formate synthesis has been demonstrated with high faradaic efficiency through the electroreduction of CO 2 in methanol. Four competing approaches were analyzed: (1) Electroreduction of captured CO 2 in a dual CH 3 OH/H 2 O electrolyzer, (2) Direct electroreduction of flue gas CO 2 in a dual CH 3 OH/H 2 O electrolyzer, (3) Electroreduction of captured CO 2 in a CH 3 OH/CH 3 OH electrolyzer, and (4) Electroreduction of captured CO 2 in a H 2 O/H 2 O electrolyzer with a downstream CH 3 OH reactor. Sensitivity analyses, cost contour plots, and comparison plots were generated. The dual methanol/water electrolysis approach was the most cost-competitive, with a levelized cost of methyl formate below the present market price. Here, the all-methanol electrolysis route was more expensive due to increased methanol consumption and greater distillation costs. Methyl formate production through aqueous CO 2 electrolysis to formic acid with a secondary esterification reaction was by far the most expensive approach, primarily due to the energy-intensive nature of distilling formic acid from water.

Reactive halogens (X + XO, X = I, Br or Cl) catalytically destroy a fraction of tropospheric ozone under present-day (PD) conditions, however, their distribution and potential impact on tropospheric ozone under pre-industrial (PI) conditions remain largely unexplored. This study uses the Community Atmosphere Model with Chemistry (CAM-Chem) to investigate the effect of anthropogenically amplified natural emissions of halogenated species and their subsequent chemistry on tropospheric ozone under PI and PD atmospheric conditions. Model results show that the global tropospheric ozone depletion due to natural halogens is slightly more sensitive in PI than PD, with percentage changes in tropospheric ozone burden (TOB) of -14.1 ± 0.6% for PI and -12.9 ± 0.6% for PD. Individually, the role of iodine and chlorine in ozone depletion is equivalent in both periods (ΔTOB I : ~-7% and ΔTOB Cl : ~-2.5%), while bromine plays a larger role in PI (ΔTOB Br : -5.5 ± 0.6%) versus PD (ΔTOB Br : -4.3 ± 0.7%). The increase in anthropogenic ozone precursor emissions from PI to PD has amplified the natural emission of inorganic halogens and led to a shift in the partitioning of inorganic halogens from reactive to reservoir species. Consequently, halogen-driven ozone depletion from the surface to the free troposphere is larger in PI than PD. In contrast, in the upper troposphere, the ozone depletion is larger in PD influenced mainly by stratospheric intrusion of reactive halogens from long-lived species. This study highlights the importance of including a complete chemical coupling of natural halogens and atmospheric pollutants in chemistry-climate models to adequately assess their effects on tropospheric ozone in a changing climate.
Abstract Adjoint waveform tomography (AWT) sits at the cutting edge of seismic tomography on local, regional, and global scales. However, the choice in starting model may have a significant impact on the final inversion results. In this paper, we present 3 AWT models of California that are based on different starting models. We chose three models that were inverted at different scales: SPiRaL, a global travel‐time tomography model (Simmons et al., 2021, 10.1093/gji/ggab277 ), CSEM_NA, a regional adjoint tomography model of North America and the North Atlantic (Krischer et al., 2018, 10.1029/2017JB015289 ), and WUS256, a regional adjoint tomography model of the western US (Rodgers et al., 2022, https://doi.org/10.1029/2022JB024549 ). We then inverted three AWT models using the same source and receiver set. We ran each model over three period bands: 30–100 s, 25–100 s, and 20–80 s. Once the iterations were finalized, we used five methods of testing model similarity in both the model and data space. We conclude that the choice of starting model has a minimal impact on long wavelength models if an appropriate multi‐scale inversion approach is used.
Understanding how the short-term evolution of synoptic weather patterns influence Mesoscale Convective Systems (MCSs) is essential, as these systems are responsible for over half of central U.S. flash floods, leading to substantial socioeconomic and water resource management impacts. This study analyzes long-term MCS data, flash flood reports, and atmospheric reanalyses from 2007 to 2017 using a machine learning clustering algorithm to examine how the synoptic weather patterns evolve prior to MCS initiation. While the clusters reflect seasonal and regional differences in MCS occurrence, they do not consistently distinguish between MCSs that do and do not produce flash floods. Systems in the southern Great Plains are more flood-prone when a synoptic-scale forcing, located near the system, drives strong water vapor transport from the nearby moisture source. More generally under different synoptic weather patterns, a broader precipitating area is the most dominant factor governing MCS flash flood potential.
Quantification of shape changes in nature-inspired soft material architectures of stimuli-sensitive polymers is critical for controlling their properties but is challenging due to their softness and flexibility. Here, we have computationally designed uniquely shaped bottlebrushes of a thermosensitive polymer, poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM), by controlling the length of side chains along the backbone. Coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations of solvated bottlebrushes were performed below and above the lower critical solution temperature of PNIPAM. Conventional analyses (free volume, asphericity, etc.) show that lengths of side chains and their immediate environments dictate the compactness and bending in these architectures. We further developed 100 unique convolutional neural network models that captured molecular-level features and generated a statistically significant quantification of the similarity between different shapes. Thus, our study provides insights into the shapes of complex architectures as well as a general method to analyze them. The shapes presented here may inspire the synthesis of new bottlebrushes.
