High level organizing principles for display of systems fault information for commercial flight crews

Advanced fault management aiding concepts for commercial pilots are being developed in a research program at NASA Langley Research Center. One aim of this program is to re-evaluate current design principles for display of fault information to the flight crew: (1) from a cognitive engineering perspective and (2) in light of the availability of new types of information generated by advanced fault management aids. The study described in this paper specifically addresses principles for organizing fault information for display to pilots based on their mental models of fault management.

Propulsion technology challenges for turn-of-the-century commercial aircraft

This paper highlights the efforts being performed or sponsored by NASA, in cooperation with the U.S. civil aviation industry, to address the propulsion system technological challenges that must be met in order to ensure a viable future for the industry. Both the subsonic and supersonic aeropropulsion programs are considered. Subsonic transport propulsion program elements, including ultra-high-bypass-ratio turbofans with attendant noise reduction efforts, high-efficiency cores, and combustor emissions reductions are discussed in terms of goals, technical issues, and problem solutions. Similarly, the high-speed research propulsion efforts addressing a high-speed commercial transport are reviewed in terms of environmental barrier issues, such as oxides of nitrogen and noise reduction, and the related economic issues.

Effect of Prestraining of Recrystallization Temperature and Mechanical Properties of Commercial, Sintered, Wrought Molybdenum

Given three presumably identical lots of commercial, sintered, wrought molybdenum, the 1-hour recrystallization temperature of one lot remained above 2900 F by limiting the amount of effective restraining to 35 percent or less. Different recrystallization temperatures were obtained in various atmospheres, the highest in argon and the lowest in hydrogen. Metal thus fabricated and then stress-relieved possessed an ultimate tensile strength at room temperature within 10 percent of metal swaged 99 percent and also possessed equivalent ductility. At 1800 F, equivalent strength and ductility was obtained irrespective of the amount of swaging over the range of 10 to 99 percent. The amount of swaging greatly influenced the recrystallized grain size but the difference in grain size is not the major controlling factor which determines whether recrystallized molybdenum is ductile or brittle at room temperature.

The practical difficulties of commercial flying

This paper relates some of the problems commercial aircraft companies have in attracting larger numbers of paying customers. The author discusses some remedies such as changing the public perception of flying as dangerous.

European commercial aeronautics

During the months of June to September, 1924, I personally visited the principal airports of Europe and traveled as a passenger some 6500 air miles on English, French, Romanian, Polish, German and Dutch air lines in order to investigate the development of commercial aviation abroad. The results of the investigation are embodied in a series of reports, of which a summary of the general findings is given below.

The Fokker "Trimotor F VII" commercial transport monoplane

Directly developed from the single engined type F VII ten passenger monoplanes, The Fokker Trimotor closely follows the commercial aircraft that preceded it. It has three Wright Whirlwind air-cooled engines, rated at 200 HP each.

The resistance coefficient of commercial round wire grids

The resistance coefficients of commercial types of round wire grids were examined for the purpose of obtaining the necessary data on supercharger test stands for throttling the inducted air to a pressure corresponding to a desired air density. The measurements of the coefficients ranged up to Reynolds numbers of 1000. In the arrangement of two grids in tandem, which was necessary in order to obtain high resistance coefficients with the solidity, that is, mesh density of grid, was found to be accompanied by a further relationship with the mutual spacing of the individual grids.

Performance of low-cost commercial fiber-optic transceivers for reference frequency distribution

Precision time and frequency reference signals were effectively disseminated using high-quality intricate fiber-optic distribution systems. The quality of signals distributed by such systems is excellent, but the cost of these systems makes them unavailable to many potential users. A study of signal quality maintained using inexpensive commercial transmitter/receiver pairs is undertaken. Seven different transmitter/receiver pairs obtained from four different manufacturers were thoroughly tested using a 5 MHz sinusoid derived from a precision, temperature controlled, crystal-controlled oscillator. The electrical signal output from each fiber-optic receiver was tested for spectral purity, single-sideband phase noise, and AM noise, and the results are tabulated and discussed without identification of the manufacturer or the equipment model number.

Commercial applications of telemedicine

Telemedicine Systems Corporation was established in 1976 and is a private commercial supplier of telemedicine systems. These systems are various combinations of communications and diagnostic technology, designed to allow the delivery of health care services to remote facilities. The technology and the health care services are paid for by the remote facilities, such as prisons.
