KELT-11 b: Abundances of Water and Constraints on Carbon-bearing Molecules from the Hubble Transmission Spectrum

In the past decade, the analysis of exoplanet atmospheric spectra has revealed the presence of water vapor in almost all the planets observed, with the exception of a fraction of overcast planets. Indeed, water vapor presents a large absorption signature in the wavelength coverage of the Hubble Space Telescope’s (HST) Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3), which is the main space-based observatory for atmospheric studies of exoplanets, making its detection very robust. However, while carbon-bearing species such as methane, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide are also predicted from current chemical models, their direct detection and abundance characterization has remained a challenge. Here we analyze the transmission spectrum of the puffy, clear hot-Jupiter KELT-11 b from the HST WFC3 camera. We find that the spectrum is consistent with the presence of water vapor and an additional absorption at longer wavelengths than 1.5 μm, which could well be explained by a mix of carbon bearing molecules. CO{sub 2}, when included is systematically detected. One of the main difficulties to constrain the abundance of those molecules is their weak signatures across the HST WFC3 wavelength coverage, particularly when compared to those of water. Through a comprehensive retrieval analysis, we attempt to explain the main degeneracies present in this data set and explore some of the recurrent challenges that are occurring in retrieval studies (e.g., the impact of model selection, the use of free versus self-consistent chemistry, and the combination of instrument observations). Our results make this planet an exceptional example of a chemical laboratory to test current physical and chemical models of the atmospheres of hot Jupiters.

Nondetection of Helium in the Upper Atmospheres of Three Sub-Neptune Exoplanets

We present a search for helium in the upper atmospheres of three sub-Neptune-sized planets to investigate the origins of these ubiquitous objects. The detection of helium for a low-density planet would be strong evidence for the presence of a primary atmosphere accreted from the protoplanetary nebula because large amounts of helium are not expected in the secondary atmospheres of rocky planets. We used Keck+NIRSPEC to obtain high-resolution transit spectroscopy of the planets GJ 1214b, GJ 9827d, and HD 97658b around the 10833 Å He triplet feature. We did not detect helium absorption for any of the planets despite achieving a high level of sensitivity. We used the nondetections to set limits on the planets’ thermosphere temperatures and atmospheric loss rates by comparing grids of 1D models to the data. We also performed coupled interior structure and atmospheric loss calculations, which suggest that the bulk atmospheres (winds) of the planets would be at most modestly enhanced (depleted) in helium relative to their primordial composition. Our lack of detections of the helium triplet for GJ 1214b and GJ 9827d is highly inconsistent with the predictions of models for the present-day mass loss on these planets. Higher signal-to-noise data would be needed to detect the helium feature predicted for HD 97658b. We identify uncertainties in the extreme-ultraviolet fluxes of the host stars and the lack of detailed mass-loss models specifically for cool and metal-enhanced atmospheres as the main limitations to the interpretation of our results. Ultimately, our results suggest that the upper atmospheres of sub-Neptune planets are fundamentally different from those of gas giant planets.

Physical Nature of the Eclipsing δ Scuti Star AO Serpentis

We present the absolute properties of the eclipsing binary AO Ser with a pulsating component from our BV photometric and high-resolution spectroscopic observations, which were performed between 2017 April and May. The radial velocities (RVs) for both components were measured, and the effective temperature and projected rotational velocity of the primary star were determined to be T eff,1 = 8,820 ± 62 K and v 1 sini 1 = 90 ± 18 km s -1 , respectively, by comparing the observed spectrum with the Kurucz models. The accurate fundamental parameters of AO Ser were determined by a simultaneous analysis of the light and RV curves. The masses and radii of the primary and secondary components are M 1 = 2.55 ± 0.09 M ⊙ and R 1 = 1.64 ± 0.02 R ⊙ and M 2 = 0.49 ± 0.02 M ⊙ and R 2 = 1.38 ± 0.02 R ⊙ , respectively. Multiple frequency analyses for the eclipse-subtracted light residuals were conducted. As a result, we detected two frequencies of f 1 = 21.852 days -1 and f 2 = 23.484 days -1 . The evolutionary position on the HR diagram and the pulsational characteristics indicate that the primary star is a δ Sct pulsator with a radial fundamental mode. On the other hand, the relatively evolved secondary is oversized for its own mass.

The ALFALFA-SDSS Galaxy Catalog

We present a H i optical catalog of ~30,000 galaxies based on the 100% complete Arecibo Legacy Fast Arecibo L-band Feed Array (ALFALFA) survey combined with data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Our goal is to facilitate the public use of the completed ALFALFA catalog by providing carefully determined matches to SDSS counterparts, including matches for ~10,000 galaxies that do not have SDSS spectra. These identifications can provide a basis for further crossmatching with other surveys using SDSS photometric IDs as a reference point. We derive absolute magnitudes and stellar masses for each galaxy using optical colors combined with an internal reddening correction designed for small- and intermediate-mass galaxies with active star formation. We also provide measures of stellar masses and star formation rates based on infrared and/or ultraviolet photometry for galaxies that are detected by the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer and/or the Galaxy Evolution Explorer. Finally, we compare the galaxy population in the ALFALFA-SDSS sample with the populations in several other publicly available galaxy catalogs and confirm that ALFALFA galaxies typically have lower masses and bluer colors.

Beyond Equilibrium Temperature: How the Atmosphere/Interior Connection Affects the Onset of Methane, Ammonia, and Clouds in Warm Transiting Giant Planets

The atmospheric pressure–temperature profiles for transiting giant planets cross a range of chemical transitions. Here we show that the particular shapes of these irradiated profiles for warm giant planets below ~1300 K lead to striking differences in the behavior of nonequilibrium chemistry compared to brown dwarfs of similar temperatures. Our particular focus is H 2 O, CO, CH 4 , CO 2 , and NH 3 in Jupiter- and Neptune-class planets. We show that the cooling history of a planet, which depends most significantly on planetary mass and age, can have a dominant effect on abundances in the visible atmosphere, often swamping trends one might expect based on T eq alone. The onset of detectable CH 4 in spectra can be delayed to lower T eq for some planets compared to equilibrium, or pushed to higher T eq . The detectability of NH 3 is typically enhanced compared to equilibrium expectations, which is opposite to the brown dwarf case. We find that both CH 4 and NH 3 can become detectable at around the same T eq (at T eq values that vary with mass and metallicity), whereas these “onset” temperatures are widely spaced for brown dwarfs. We suggest observational strategies to search for atmospheric trends and stress that nonequilibrium chemistry and clouds can serve as probes of atmospheric physics. As examples of atmospheric complexity, we assess three Neptune-class planets, GJ 436b, GJ 3470b, and WASP-107, all around T eq = 700 K. Tidal heating due to eccentricity damping in all three planets heats the deep atmosphere by thousands of degrees and may explain the absence of CH 4 in these cool atmospheres. Atmospheric abundances must be interpreted in the context of physical characteristics of the planet.

Early High-contrast Imaging Results with Keck/NIRC2-PWFS: The SR 21 Disk

High-contrast imaging of exoplanets and protoplanetary disks depends on wave front sensing and correction made by adaptive optics instruments. Classically, wave front sensing has been conducted at optical wavelengths, which made high-contrast imaging of red targets such as M-type stars or extincted T Tauri stars challenging. Keck/NIRC2 has combined near-infrared (NIR) detector technology with the pyramid wave front sensor (PWFS). With this new module we observed SR 21, a young star that is brighter at NIR wavelengths than at optical wavelengths. Compared with the archival data of SR 21 taken with the optical wave front sensing we achieved ~20% better Strehl ratio in similar natural seeing conditions. Further post-processing utilizing angular differential imaging and reference-star differential imaging confirmed the spiral feature reported by the Very Large Telescope/Spectro-Polarimetric High-contrast Exoplanet REsearch instrument polarimetric observation, which is the first detection of the SR 21 spiral in total intensity at L' band. We also compared the contrast limit of our result (10 -4 at 0.'4 and 2 × 10 -5 at 1.'0) with the archival data that were taken with optical wave front sensing and confirmed the improvement, particularly at ≤0.'5. Our observation demonstrates that the NIR PWFS improves AO performance and will provide more opportunities for red targets in the future.

Photometric Study and Absolute Parameter Estimation of Six Totally Eclipsing Contact Binaries

High precision CCD observations of six totally eclipsing contact binaries were presented and analyzed. It is found that only one target is an A-type contact binary (V429 Cam), while the others are W-type contact ones. By analyzing the times of light minima, we discovered that two of them exhibit secular period increase while three manifest long-term period decrease. For V1033 Her, a cyclic variation superimposed on the long-term increase was discovered. By comparing the Gaia distances with those calculated by the absolute parameters of 173 contact binaries, we found that the Gaia distance can be applied to estimate the absolute parameters for most contact binaries. The absolute parameters of our six targets were estimated using their Gaia distances. The evolutionary status of contact binaries was studied, and we found that the A- and W-subtype contact binaries may have different formation channels. The relationship between the spectroscopic and photometric mass ratios for 101 contact binaries was presented. It was discovered that the photometric mass ratios are in good agreement with the spectroscopic ones for almost all of the totally eclipsing systems, which is corresponding to the results derived by Pribulla et al. and Terrell & Wilson.

Methanol mixing controlled combustion process enabled by methanol dehydration to dimethyl ether

This work demonstrates an initial proof-of-concept approach for operating a compression ignition off-road and marine relevant engine using neat methanol. The approach utilizes mixing controlled compression ignition (MCCI) of methanol that is enabled by a homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) pre-burn of premixed dimethyl ether (DME). Although two fuels are used, this work explores and evaluates the opportunity and performance to generate the premixed fuel via. methanol catalytic dehydration over an alumina catalyst at engine relevant temperatures, pressures, and space velocities. Conversion purity and species output results from catalytic dehydration bench flow reactor studies were coupled with single cylinder experiments of the characterized output species for pre-burn HCCI performance. Subsequent initial methanol MCCI performance is also evaluated and compared relative to conventional diesel combustion. The detailed flow reactor results show that the catalytic dehydration conversion efficiency of methanol to DME is a function of system pressure, temperature, and space velocity. The engine results demonstrate that a 100% conversion of methanol to DME is not required for successful pre-burn HCCI, and the water formed during the dehydration process does not need to be removed to achieve the desired HCCI event from this pre-burn mixture. Subsequent methanol MCCI combustion results show that the level of methanol slip in the dehydration process affects the pre-burn HCCI phasing, low temperature heat release process, and magnitude of energy released, all of which can dictate the available window for direct injection of methanol for MCCI combustion.

Space shuttle baseline accommodations for payloads

The space shuttle system as it relates to payloads is described. This study provides potential users of the space shuttle with a uniform base of information on the accommodations between the payload and the shuttle. By utilizing this information, preliminary payload planning and design studies can be evaluated and compared against a common set of shuttle/payload accommodations. This information also minimizes the necessity for each payload study to develop information on the shuttle configuration.

A computer assisted teleoperator control station with tactile feedback

A computer-assisted teleoperator control system for making comparative performance evaluations is described. A local and a remote control station, each with decision-making capability, communicate with each other through a simulated time delay. Supervisory control at three increasingly automatic levels is possible. The highest level of programmed control is facilitated through the ARM language which was developed to permit easily readable program manuscripts to be written and assembled into programs of motions by novice programmers. Experimental results show the advantage of this form of supervisory control with both direct and delayed (3 sec) manipulation tasks. In addition, two systems to measure and reproduce force distributions have been designed. One system reproduces contact on the external surfaces of the remote hand using 21 airjet simulators. Another system reproduces the shape of the contact between object and jaws using 288 piezoelectric (bimorph) stimulators.

Performance of statistical energy analysis

Statistical energy analysis (SEA) methods have been developed for high frequency modal analyses on random vibration environments. These SEA methods are evaluated by comparing analytical predictions to test results. Simple test methods are developed for establishing SEA parameter values. Techniques are presented, based on the comparison of the predictions with test values, for estimating SEA accuracy as a function of frequency for a general structure.

Four Space Shuttle wing leading edge concepts.

A heat-pipe-cooled Space Shuttle orbiter wing leading edge was compared and evaluated against three alternate leading edge candidates: a refurbishable ablative design, and two other reusable versions employing coated columbium and carbon-carbon high-temperature segments. Each candidate concept was shown feasible in the Phase B environment. The reusable versions were all found to cost nearly the same and substantially less than the nonreusable ablative version. However, since current Shuttle trajectories produce higher heating rates than those used in this study, the carbon-carbon and heat pipe concepts are now the prime candidates for Shuttle leading edge thermal protection.

Low data rate digital space communications

The low available transmitter power and the large frequency uncertainty constrain the data rate to be low. An all-digital communication receiver is proposed, and its feasibility is established. Although coherent systems should be used whenever practical, the noncoherent MFSK system is more suitable for very low data rates. The effect of Rician fading on the performance of MFSK receiver is studied. Fading characteristics of the Venus channel are examined based on the exponential model and available experimental data on the Venus atmosphere. Because of the requirement of high communication efficiency, three codes are evaluated and compared. The rapidly varying phase error at low data rate has great effects on the tracking loop behaviors which are examined by extensive computer study of the phase plane trajectories.

The detection of fatigue cracks by nondestructive testing methods

X-radiographic penetrant, ultrasonic, eddy current, holographic, and acoustic emission techniques were optimized and applied to the evaluation of 2219-T87 aluminum alloy test specimens. One hundred eighteen specimens containing a total of 328 fatigue cracks were evaluated. The cracks ranged in length from 0.500 inch (1.27 cm) to 0.007 inch (0.018 cm) and in depth from 0.178 inch (0.451 cm) and 0.001 inch (0.003 cm). Specimen thicknesses were nominally 0.060 inch (0.152 cm) and 0.210 inch (0.532 cm) and surface finishes were nominally 32 and 125 rms and 64 and 200 rms respectively. Specimens were evaluated in the as-milled surface condition, in the chemically milled surface condition and, after proof loading, in a randomized inspection sequence. Results of the nondestructive test (NDT) evaluations were compared with actual crack size obtained by measurement of the fractured specimens. Inspection data was then analyzed to provide a statistical basis for determinating the threshold crack detection sensitivity (the largest crack size that would be missed) for each of the inspection techniques at a 95% probability and 95% confidence level.
