Measurement of event shapes in minimum-bias events from proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13

A measurement of event-shape variables is presented, using a data sample produced in a special run with approximately one inelastic proton-proton collision per bunch crossing. The data were collected with the CMS detector at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 64 μ⁢b −1 . A number of observables related to the overall distribution of charged particles in the collisions are corrected for detector effects and compared with simulations. Inclusive event-shape distributions, as well as differential distributions of event shapes as functions of charged-particle multiplicity, are studied. None of the models investigated are able to satisfactorily describe the data. Moreover, there are significant features common amongst all generator setups studied, particularly showing data being more isotropic than any of the simulations. Multidimensional unfolded distributions are provided, along with their correlations.

Signatures of QCD conductivities in heavy-ion collisions

Dissipative processes are pivotal for understanding the hydrodynamic evolution of hot and dense quantum chromodynamics (QCD) matter created in relativistic nuclear collisions. The interplay of multiple conserved charges—net baryon, strangeness, and electric charge—is of particular interest. Here, we simulate the longitudinal hydrodynamic evolution with the three diffusion currents in a hydrodynamic model with a lattice-QCD-based equation of state, NEOS -4 D , and estimate rapidity distributions including diffusive corrections to the phase-space distribution in the presence of multiple charges, which ensure charge conservation at particlization. We determine the response of particle yields at midrapidity to changes in the diagonal and off-diagonal conductivities. Inversely, we find that most components of the conductivity matrix can be constrained experimentally using identified particle multiplicities at different collision energies.

Measurement of Two-Point Energy Correlators within Jets in 𝑝 + 𝑝 Collisions at $\sqrt{𝑠}$ = 200 GeV

Hard-scattered partons ejected from high-energy proton-proton collisions undergo parton shower and hadronization, resulting in collimated collections of particles that are clustered into jets. A substructure observable that highlights the transition between the perturbative and nonperturbative regimes of jet evolution in terms of the angle between two particles is the two-point energy correlator (EEC). In this Letter, the first measurement of the EEC at RHIC is presented, using data taken from 200 GeV 𝑝 + 𝑝 collisions by the STAR experiment. The EEC is measured both for all the pairs of particles in jets and separately for pairs with like and opposite electric charges. These measurements demonstrate that the transition between perturbative and nonperturbative effects occurs within an angular region that is consistent with expectations of a universal hadronization regime that scales with jet momentum for a given initiator flavor. Additionally, a deviation from Monte Carlo predictions at small angles in the charge-selected sample could result from mechanics of hadronization not fully captured by current models.

In-medium $\Delta (1232)$ potential, pion production in heavy-ion collisions and the symmetry energy

Using the dcQMD transport model, the isoscalar and isovector in-medium potentials of the Δ (1232) baryon are studied and information regarding their effective strength is obtained from a comparison to experimental pion production data in heavy-ion collisions below 800 MeV/nucleon impact energy. The best description is achieved for an isoscalar potential moderately more attractive than the nucleon optical potential and a rather small isoscalar relative effective mass $m$$^{*}_{Δ}$ ≈ 0.45. For the isovector component only a constraint between the potential’s strength at saturation and the isovector effective mass difference can be extracted, which depends on quantities such as the slope of the symmetry energy and the neutron-proton effective mass difference. These results are incompatible with the usual assumption, in transport models, that the Δ (1232) and nucleon potentials are equal. The density dependence of symmetry energy can be studied using the high transverse momentum tail of pion multiplicity ratio spectra. Results are however correlated with the value of neutron-proton effective mass difference. Furthermore, this region of spectra is shown to be affected by uncertain model ingredients such as the pion potential or in-medium correction to inelastic scattering cross-sections at levels smaller than 10%. Extraction of precise constraints for the density dependence of symmetry energy above saturation will require experimental data for pion production in heavy-ion collisions below 800 MeV/nucleon impact energy and experimental values for the high transverse momentum tail of pion multiplicity ratio spectra accurate to better than 5%.

Production of \(\omega \) mesons in pp collisions at \(\mathbf {\sqrt{s}=7\,\text {TeV}}\)

The invariant differential cross section of inclusive \(\omega (782)\) meson production at midrapidity ( \(|y|<0.5\) ) in pp collisions at \(\sqrt{s}=7\,\hbox {TeV}\) was measured with the ALICE detector at the LHC over a transverse momentum range of \(2< p_{\mathrm {T}}< 17\,\hbox {GeV}/c\) . The \(\omega \) meson was reconstructed via its \(\omega \rightarrow \pi ^+\pi ^-\pi ^0\) decay channel. The measured \(\omega \) production cross section is compared to various calculations: PYTHIA 8.2 Monash 2013 describes the data, while PYTHIA 8.2 Tune 4C overestimates the data by about 50%. A recent NLO calculation, which includes a model describing the fragmentation of the whole vector-meson nonet, describes the data within uncertainties below \(6\,\hbox {GeV}/c\) , while it overestimates the data by up to 50% for higher \(p_{\mathrm {T}}\) . The \(\omega /\pi ^0\) ratio is in agreement with previous measurements at lower collision energies and the PYTHIA calculations. In addition, the measurement is compatible with transverse mass scaling within the measured \(p_{\mathrm {T}}\) range and the ratio is constant with \(C^{\omega /\pi ^{0}}= 0.67 \pm 0.03 \text {~(stat)~} \pm 0.04 \text {~(sys)~}\) above a transverse momentum of \(2.5\,\hbox {GeV}/c\) .

Measurements of WH and ZH production in the $$H \rightarrow b\bar{b}$$ decay channel in pp collisions at $$13\,\text {Te}\text {V}$$ with the ATLAS detector

Measurements of the Standard Model Higgs boson decaying into a $$b\bar{b}$$ b b ¯ pair and produced in association with a W or Z boson decaying into leptons, using proton–proton collision data collected between 2015 and 2018 by the ATLAS detector, are presented. The measurements use collisions produced by the Large Hadron Collider at a centre-of-mass energy of $$\sqrt{s} = 13\,\text {Te}\text {V}$$ s = 13 Te , corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $$139\,\mathrm {fb}^{-1}$$ 139 fb - 1 . The production of a Higgs boson in association with a W or Z boson is established with observed (expected) significances of 4.0 (4.1) and 5.3 (5.1) standard deviations, respectively. Cross-sections of associated production of a Higgs boson decaying into bottom quark pairs with an electroweak gauge boson, W or Z , decaying into leptons are measured as a function of the gauge boson transverse momentum in kinematic fiducial volumes. The cross-section measurements are all consistent with the Standard Model expectations, and the total uncertainties vary from 30% in the high gauge boson transverse momentum regions to 85% in the low regions. Limits are subsequently set on the parameters of an effective Lagrangian sensitive to modifications of the WH and ZH processes as well as the Higgs boson decay into $$b\bar{b}$$ b b ¯ .

Mixed higher-order anisotropic flow and nonlinear response coefficients of charged particles in $\mathrm {PbPb}$ collisions at $\sqrt{\smash [b]{s_{_{\mathrm {NN}}}}} = 2.76$ and 5.02$\,\text {TeV}$

Anisotropies in the initial energy density distribution of the quark-gluon plasma created in high energy heavy ion collisions lead to anisotropies in the azimuthal distributions of the final-state particles known as collective anisotropic flow. Fourier harmonic decomposition is used to quantify these anisotropies. The higher-order harmonics can be induced by the same order anisotropies (linear response) or by the combined influence of several lower order anisotropies (nonlinear response) in the initial state. The mixed higher-order anisotropic flow and nonlinear response coefficients of charged particles are measured as functions of transverse momentum and centrality in $\mathrm {PbPb}$ collisions at nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energies $\sqrt{\smash [b]{s_{_{\mathrm {NN}}}}} = 2.76$ and 5.02$\,\text {TeV}$ with the CMS detector. The results are compared with viscous hydrodynamic calculations using several different initial conditions, as well as microscopic transport model calculations. None of the models provides a simultaneous description of the mixed higher-order flow harmonics and nonlinear response coefficients.

Measurement of the transverse momentum distribution of Drell–Yan lepton pairs in proton–proton collisions at √s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

This paper describes precision measurements of the transverse momentum $p_\mathrm {T}^{\ell \ell }$ ($\ell =e,\mu $) and of the angular variable $\phi ^{*}_{\eta }$ distributions of Drell–Yan lepton pairs in a mass range of 66–116 GeV. The analysis uses data from 36.1 fb$^{-1}$ of proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=13\,$TeV collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC in 2015 and 2016. Measurements in electron-pair and muon-pair final states are performed in the same fiducial volumes, corrected for detector effects, and combined. Compared to previous measurements in proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ and $8\,$TeV, these new measurements probe perturbative QCD at a higher centre-of-mass energy with a different composition of initial states. They reach a precision of 0.2$\%$ for the normalized spectra at low values of $p_\mathrm {T}^{\ell \ell }$. The data are compared with different QCD predictions, where it is found that predictions based on resummation approaches can describe the full spectrum within uncertainties.

Study of central exclusive $\pi^+\pi^-$ production in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 5.02 and 13 TeV

Central exclusive and semiexclusive production of pairs is measured with the CMS detector in proton-proton collisions at the LHC at center-of-mass energies of 5.02 and 13TeV. The theoretical description of these nonperturbative processes, which have not yet been measured in detail at the LHC, poses a significant challenge to models. The two pions are measured and identified in the CMS silicon tracker based on specific energy loss, whereas the absence of other particles is ensured by calorimeter information. The total and differential cross sections of exclusive and semiexclusive central production are measured as functions of invariant mass, transverse momentum, and rapidity of the system in the fiducial region defined as transverse momentum and pseudorapidity . The production cross sections for the four resonant channels [inline-graphic not available: see fulltext], , [inline-graphic not available: see fulltext], and [inline-graphic not available: see fulltext]are extracted using a simple model. These results represent the first measurement of this process at the LHC collision energies of 5.02 and 13TeV.

Pseudorapidity distributions of charged particles as a function of mid- and forward rapidity multiplicities in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.02, 7 and 13 TeV

The multiplicity dependence of the pseudorapidity density of charged particles in proton–proton (pp) collisions at centre-of-mass energies √s = 5.02, 7 and 13 TeV measured by ALICE is reported. The analysis relies on track segments measured in the midrapidity range (|η| < 1.5). Results are presented for inelastic events having at least one charged particle produced in the pseudorapidity interval |η| < 1. The multiplicity dependence of the pseudorapidity density of charged particles is measured with mid- and forward rapidity multiplicity estimators, the latter being less affected by autocorrelations. A detailed comparison with predictions from the PYTHIA 8 and EPOS LHC event generators is also presented. The results can be used to constrain models for particle production as a function of multiplicity in pp collisions.

Energy dependence of \(\phi \) meson production at forward rapidity in pp collisions at the LHC

The production of Φ mesons has been studied in pp collisions at LHC energies with the ALICE detector via the dimuon decay channel in the rapidity region 2.5 < y < 4. Measurements of the differential cross section d 2 σ / dydpT are presented as a function of the transverse momentum (p T ) at the center-of-mass energies √s = 5.02, 8 and 13 TeV and compared with the ALICE results at midrapidity. The differential cross sections at √s = 5.02 and 13 TeV are also studied in several rapidity intervals as a function of p T , and as a function of rapidity in three p T intervals. A hardening of the p T -differential cross section with the collision energy is observed, while, for a given energy, p T spectra soften with increasing rapidity and, conversely, rapidity distributions get slightly narrower at increasing p T . The new results, complementing the published measurements at √s = 2.76 and 7 TeV, allow one to establish the energy dependence of Φ meson production and to compare the measured cross sections with phenomenological models. None of the considered models manages to describe the evolution of the cross section with p T and rapidity at all the energies.

The ATLAS inner detector trigger performance in pp collisions at 13 TeV during LHC Run 2

The design and performance of the inner detector trigger for the high level trigger of the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider during the 2016–2018 data taking period is discussed. In 2016, 2017, and 2018 the ATLAS detector recorded 35.6 fb –1 , 46.9 fb –1 , and 60.6 fb –1 respectively of proton–proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. In order to deal with the very high interaction multiplicities per bunch crossing expected with the 13 TeV collisions the inner detector trigger was redesigned during the long shutdown of the Large Hadron Collider from 2013 until 2015. An overview of these developments is provided and the performance of the tracking in the trigger for the muon, electron, tau and b-jet signatures is discussed. The high performance of the inner detector trigger with these extreme interaction multiplicities demonstrates how the inner detector tracking continues to lie at the heart of the trigger performance and is essential in enabling the ATLAS physics programme.

Determination of the parton distribution functions of the proton using diverse ATLAS data from pp collisions at $$\sqrt{s} = 7$$, 8 and 13 TeV

This paper presents an analysis at next-to-next-to-leading order in the theory of quantum chromodynamics for the determination of a new set of proton parton distribution functions using diverse measurements in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7, 8 and 13 TeV, performed by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider, together with deep inelastic scattering data from ep collisions at the HERA collider. The ATLAS data sets considered are differential cross-section measurements of inclusive W ± and Z/γ* boson production, W ± and Z boson production in association with jets, $t\bar{t}$ production, inclusive jet production and direct photon production. In the analysis, particular attention is paid to the correlation of systematic uncertainties within and between the various ATLAS data sets and to the impact of model, theoretical and parameterisation uncertainties. The resulting set of parton distribution functions is called ATLASpdf21.

Investigating charm production and fragmentation via azimuthal correlations of prompt D mesons with charged particles in pp collisions at $\mathbf {\sqrt{ s} = 13}$ TeV

Angular correlations of heavy-flavour and charged particles in high-energy proton–proton collisions are sensitive to the production mechanisms of heavy quarks and to their fragmentation as well as hadronisation processes. The measurement of the azimuthal-correlation function of prompt D mesons with charged particles in proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of \(\sqrt{s} = 13\) TeV with the ALICE detector is reported, considering \(\mathrm D^{0} \) , \(\mathrm D^{+} \) , and \(\mathrm D^{*+} \) mesons in the transverse-momentum interval \(3< p_{\mathrm{T}} < 36\) GeV/ \(c\) at midrapidity ( \(|y| < 0.5\) ), and charged particles with \(p_{\mathrm{T}} > 0.3\) GeV/ \(c\) and pseudorapidity \(|\eta | < 0.8\) . This measurement has an improved precision and provides an extended transverse-momentum coverage compared to previous ALICE measurements at lower energies. The study is also performed as a function of the charged-particle multiplicity, showing no modifications of the correlation function with multiplicity within uncertainties. The properties and the transverse-momentum evolution of the near- and away-side correlation peaks are studied and compared with predictions from various Monte Carlo event generators. Among those considered, PYTHIA8 and POWHEG+PYTHIA8 provide the best description of the measured observables. The obtained results can provide guidance on tuning the generators.

Multiplicity dependence of charged-particle jet production in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

The multiplicity dependence of jet production in pp collisions at the centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV is studied for the first time. Jets are reconstructed from charged particles using the anti-$k_T$ algorithm with resolution parameters $\textit{R}$ varying from 0.2 to 0.7. The jets are measured in the pseudorapidity range |$η_{\text{jet}}$| < 0.9 – $\textit{R}$ and in the transverse momentum range 5 < $p^{ch}_{\text{T,jet}}$ < 140 GeV/c. The multiplicity intervals are categorised by the ALICE forward detector V0. The $p_T$ differential cross section of charged-particle jets are compared to leading order (LO) and next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative quantum chromodynamics (pQCD) calculations. It is found that the data are better described by the NLO calculation, although the NLO prediction overestimates the jet cross section below 20 GeV/c. The cross section ratios for different $\textit{R}$ are also measured and compared to model calculations. These measurements provide insights into the angular dependence of jet fragmentation. The jet yield increases with increasing self-normalised charged-particle multiplicity. This increase shows only a weak dependence on jet transverse momentum and resolution parameter at the highest multiplicity. While such behaviour is qualitatively described by the present version of PYTHIA, quantitative description may require implementing new mechanisms for multi-particle production in hadronic collisions.

Inclusive quarkonium production in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.02 TeV

This article reports on the inclusive production cross section of several quarkonium states, J/ψ, ψ(2S), $\mathcal{Υ}$(1S), $\mathcal{Υ}$(2S), and $\mathcal{Υ}$(3S), measured with the ALICE detector at the LHC, in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=5.02 TeV. The analysis is performed in the dimuon decay channel at forward rapidity ( 2.5 < y < 4). The integrated cross sections and transverse-momentum (p T ) and rapidity (y) differential cross sections for J/ψ, ψ(2S), $\mathcal{Υ}$(1S), and the ψ(2S) -to-J/ψ cross section ratios are presented. The integrated cross sections, assuming unpolarized quarkonia, are: σ J/ψ (p T <20 GeV/c) = 5.88 ± 0.03 ± 0.34 μb, σ ψ(2S) (p T <12 GeV/c) = 0.87 ± 0.06 ± 0.10 μb, σ Υ(1S) (p T <15 GeV/c) = 45.5 ± 3.9 ± 3.5 nb, σ Υ(2S) (p T <15 GeV/c) = 22.4 ± 3.2 ± 2.7 nb, and σ Υ(3S) (p T <15 GeV/c) = 4.9 ± 2.2 ± 1.0 nb, where the first (second) uncertainty is the statistical (systematic) one. For the first time, the cross sections of the three $\mathcal{Υ}$ states, as well as the ψ(2S) one as a function of p T and y , are measured at $\sqrt{s}$=5.02 TeV at forward rapidity. These measurements also significantly extend the J/ψ p T reach and supersede previously published results. A comparison with ALICE measurements in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=2.76, 7, 8, and 13 TeV is presented and the energy dependence of quarkonium production cross sections is discussed. Finally, the results are compared with the predictions from several production models.

Multiplicity and rapidity dependence of $\textrm{K}^{*}(\mathrm {{\textbf {892}}})^{0}$ and $\mathrm {\phi ({\textbf {1020}})}$ production in p–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} =$ 5.02 TeV

The transverse-momentum (p T ) spectra of K*(892) 0 and Φ(1020) measured with the ALICE detector up to p T = 16 GeV/c in the rapidity range -1.2 < y < 0.3, in p–Pb collisions at the center-of-mass energy per nucleon–nucleon collision $\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV are presented as a function of charged particle multiplicity and rapidity. The measured p T distributions show a dependence on both multiplicity and rapidity at low p T whereas no significant dependence is observed at high p T . A rapidity dependence is observed in the p T -integrated yield (dN/dy), whereas the mean transverse momentum ($\langle$p T $\rangle$) shows a flat behavior as a function of rapidity. The rapidity asymmetry (Y asym ) at low p T (< 5 GeV/c) is more significant for higher multiplicity classes. At high p T , no significant rapidity asymmetry is observed in any of the multiplicity classes. Both K*(892) 0 and Φ(1020) show similar Y asym . The nuclear modification factor (Q CP ) as a function of p T shows a Cronin-like enhancement at intermediate p T , which is more prominent at higher rapidities (Pb-going direction) and in higher multiplicity classes. At high p T (> 5 GeV/c), the Q CP values are greater than unity and no significant rapidity dependence is observed.

Measurement of antiproton production from antihyperon decays in ${p} \textrm{He}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\scriptscriptstyle \mathrm NN}} =110$ GeV

The interpretation of cosmic antiproton flux measurements from space-borne experiments is currently limited by the knowledge of the antiproton production cross-section in collisions between primary cosmic rays and the interstellar medium. Using collisions of protons with an energy of 6.5 TeV incident on helium nuclei at rest in the proximity of the interaction region of the LHCb experiment, the ratio of antiprotons originating from antihyperon decays to prompt production is measured for antiproton momenta between 12 and 110 GeV/c. The dominant antihyperon contribution, namely ${\overline{\varLambda }} \rightarrow {\overline{{p}}} {{\pi } ^+}$ decays from promptly produced $\overline{\varLambda }$ particles, is also exclusively measured. The results complement the measurement of prompt antiproton production obtained from the same data sample. At the energy scale of this measurement, the antihyperon contributions to antiproton production are observed to be significantly larger than predictions of commonly used hadronic production models.
