Acquisition of the QPSK demodulator in the presence of interference

The acquisition behavior of the tracking and data relay satellite system (TDRSS) receiver (a quadrative phase-shift keying (QPSK) demodulator using a dither lock detector) in the presence of interference from another user has been analyzed using a simulation model. The demodulator is composed of an automatic gain control, a QPSK Costas loop, a frequency sweep unit, lock test units, and a control unit. The simulation model has been tested for the following variables: signal and interference Doppler frequencies and phase offsets (with respect to initial voltage control oscillator setup), signal-to-interference ratio (SIR), and signal I/Q power ratio. The simulation results are discussed.

Large-area YBa2Cu3O(7-delta) thin films on sapphire for microwave applications

We have deposited YBa2Cu3O(7-delta) (YBCO) films with low microwave surface resistance (Rs) on 5-cm-diam, oxide-buffered sapphire substrates by planar magnetron sputtering. MgO buffer layers are used on M-plane (1 0 -1 0) sapphire, and R-plane (1 -1 0 2) sapphire is buffered by CeO2. Rs values of 450-620 microhms at 77 K and 10 GHz were measured across an entire 5-cm diam YBCO film on M-plane sapphire. For YBCO on R-plane sapphire, Rs values at 77 K and 10 GHz were 950 microohms for a 5-cm-diam wafer and 700 microohms for 1 x 1 sq cm samples.

Wind-Tunnel Investigation of the Effect of Tab Balance on Tab and Control-Surface Characteristics

An investigation was conducted to furnish data on the effect of tab balance on tab and control-surface characteristics. The airfoil tested had a modified NACA 65(1)-012 contour with a plain flap having a chord equal to 25 percent of the wing chord and with a tab having a chord equal to 25 percent of the flap chord and having several nose shapes and overhang lengths. The results of the investigation indicated that, in general, tab balance affected tab hinge-moment characteristics in much the same manner that flap balance affects flap hinge-moment characteristics. A moderate amount of tab balance did not seem to have any adverse effect on flap hinge-moment characteristics.

Test of a model propeller with symmetrical blade sections

This report, prepared at the request of NACA, gives the results of tests on a model propeller having blade sections with form of Gottingen airfoil no. 409. The model is shown to have a dynamic pitch practically equal to the nominal or geometrical pitch, and a somewhat higher efficiency but lower coefficient than would be expected of a propeller of more conventional sections.

The aerodynamic characteristics of six commonly used Airfoils over a large range of positive and negative angles of attack

This paper presents the results of tests of six commonly used airfoils: the CYH, the N-22, the C-72, the Boeing 106, and the Gottingen 398. The lifts, drags, and pitching moments of the airfoils were measured through a large range of positive and negative angles of attack. The tests were made in the variable density wind tunnel of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics at a large Boeing 106, and the Gottingen 398 airfoils, the negative maximum lift coefficients were found to be approximately half the positive; but for the M-6 and the CYH, which have less effective values were, respectively, 0.8 and 0.6 of the positive values.

Characteristics of an Airfoil as Affected by Fabric Sag

This report presents the results of tests made at a high value of the Reynolds Number in the N.A.C.A. variable-density wind tunnel to determine the aerodynamic characteristics of an airfoil as affected by fabric sag. Tests were made of two Gottingen 387 airfoils, one having the usual smooth surface and the other having a surface modified to simulate two types of fabric sag. The results of these tests indicate that the usual sagging of the wind covering between ribs has a very small effect on the aerodynamic characteristics of an airfoil.

Joukowski wings

To sum up, Professor Joukowski's theory of supporting wings renders it possible to calculate the coefficient of lift in terms of the angle of attack, and Prandtl's coefficient of induced drag and the correction of the angle of attack in terms of the disposition and aspect ratio of the wings.
