Tunable Kondo Resonance at a Pristine Two-Dimensional Dirac Semimetal on a Kondo Insulator

The proximity of two different materials leads to an intricate coupling of quasiparticles so that an unprecedented electronic state is often realized at the interface. Here, we demonstrate a resonance-type many-body ground state in graphene, a nonmagnetic two-dimensional Dirac semimetal, when grown on SmB 6 , a Kondo insulator, via thermal decomposition of fullerene molecules. This ground state is typically observed in three-dimensional magnetic materials with correlated electrons. Above the characteristic Kondo temperature of the substrate, the electron band structure of pristine graphene remains almost intact in this work. As temperature decreases, however, the Dirac Fermions of graphene become hybridized with the Sm 4 f states. Remarkable enhancement of the hybridization and Kondo resonance is observed with further cooling and increasing charge-carrier density of graphene, evidencing the Kondo screening of the Sm 4 f local magnetic moment by the conduction electrons of graphene at the interface. These findings manifest the realization of the Kondo effect in graphene by the proximity of SmB 6 that is tuned by the temperature and charge-carrier density of graphene.

Strong Correlation Between Superconductivity and Ferromagnetism in an Fe-Chalcogenide Superconductor

The interplay among topology, superconductivity, and magnetism promises to bring a plethora of exotic and unintuitive behaviors in emergent quantum materials. The family of Fe-chalcogenide superconductors FeTe x Se 1–x are directly relevant in this context due to their intrinsic topological band structure, high-temperature superconductivity, and unconventional pairing symmetry. Despite enormous promise and expectation, the local magnetic properties of FeTe x Se 1–x remain largely unexplored, which prevents a comprehensive understanding of their underlying material properties. Exploiting nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers in diamond, here we report nanoscale quantum sensing and imaging of magnetic flux generated by exfoliated FeTe x Se 1–x flakes, demonstrating strong correlation between superconductivity and ferromagnetism in FeTe x Se 1–x . The coexistence of superconductivity and ferromagnetism in an established topological superconductor opens up new opportunities for exploring exotic spin and charge transport phenomena in quantum materials. The demonstrated coupling between NV centers and FeTe x Se 1–x may also find applications in developing hybrid architectures for next-generation, solid-state-based quantum information technologies.

Dynamic Tuning of Moiré Excitons in a WSe 2 /WS 2 Heterostructure via Mechanical Deformation

Moiré superlattices in van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures form by stacking atomically thin layers on top of one another with a twist angle or lattice mismatch. The resulting moiré potential leads to a strong modification of the band structure, which can give rise to exotic quantum phenomena ranging from correlated insulators and superconductors to moiré excitons and Wigner crystals. Here, in this study, we demonstrate the dynamic tuning of moiré potential in a WSe 2 /WS 2 heterostructure at cryogenic temperature. We utilize the optical fiber tip of a cryogenic scanning near-field optical microscope (SNOM) to locally deform the heterostructure and measure its near-field optical response simultaneously. The deformation of the heterostructure increases the moiré potential, which leads to a red shift of the moiré exciton resonances. We observe the interlayer exciton resonance shifts up to 20 meV, while the intralayer exciton resonances shift up to 17 meV.

Quantum Spin Hall Edge States and Interlayer Coupling in Twisted Bilayer WTe 2

The quantum spin Hall (QSH) effect, characterized by topologically protected spin-polarized edge states, was recently demonstrated in monolayers of the transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) WTe 2 . However, the robustness of this topological protection remains largely unexplored in van der Waals heterostructures containing one or more layers of a QSH insulator. Here, we use scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/STS) to explore the topological nature of twisted bilayer (tBL) WTe 2 . Furthermore, at the tBL edges, we observe the characteristic spectroscopic signatures of the QSH edge states. For small twist angles, a rectangular moiré pattern develops, which results in local modifications of the band structure. Using first-principles calculations, we quantify the interactions in tBL WTe 2 and its topological edge states as a function of interlayer distance and conclude that it is possible to engineer the topology of WTe 2 bilayers via the twist angle as well as interlayer interactions.

Acceleration of Biexciton Radiative Recombination at Low Temperature in CdSe Nanoplatelets

Colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals offer bandgap tunability, high photoluminescence quantum yield, and colloidal processing of benefit to optoelectronics, however rapid nonradiative Auger recombination (AR) deleteriously affects device efficiencies at elevated excitation intensities. AR is understood to transition from temperature-dependent behavior in bulk semiconductors to temperature-independent behavior in zero-dimensional quantum dots (QDs) as a result of discretized band structure that facilitates satisfaction of linear momentum conservation. For nanoplatelets (NPLs), two-dimensional morphology renders prediction of photophysical behaviors challenging. Here, in this study, we investigate and compare the temperature dependence of excited-stated lifetime and fluence-dependent emission of CdSe NPLs and QDs. For NPLs, upon temperature reduction, biexciton lifetime surprisingly decreases (even becoming shorter lived than trion emission) and emission intensity increases nearly linearly with fluence rather than saturating, consistent with dominance of radiative recombination rather than AR. CdSe NPLs thus differ fundamentally from core-only QDs and foster increased utility of photogenerated excitons and multiexcitons at low temperatures.

Even–Odd Layer-Dependent Exchange Bias Effect in MnBi 2 Te 4 Chern Insulator Devices

Magnetic topological materials with coexisting magnetism and nontrivial band structures exhibit many novel quantum phenomena, including the quantum anomalous Hall effect, the axion insulator state, and the Weyl semimetal phase. As a stoichiometric layered antiferromagnetic topological insulator, thin films of MnBi 2 Te 4 show fascinating even–odd layer-dependent physics. Here, in this work, we fabricate a series of thin-flake MnBi 2 Te 4 devices using stencil masks and observe the Chern insulator state at high magnetic fields. Upon magnetic field training, a large exchange bias effect is observed in odd but not in even septuple layer (SL) devices. Through theoretical calculations, we attribute the even–odd layer-dependent exchange bias effect to the contrasting surface and bulk magnetic properties of MnBi 2 Te 4 devices. Our findings reveal the microscopic magnetic configuration of MnBi 2 Te 4 thin flakes and highlight the challenges in replicating the zero magnetic field quantum anomalous Hall effect in odd SL MnBi 2 Te 4 devices.

In Situ Atomic Tracking on the Interfacial Etching and Reconfiguration of Cu-ReSe 2 Contact during Thermal Annealing

The Schottky barrier height can be greatly affected by the metal diffusion, reaction, and covalent bonding formation at the contact. Exploring novel methods and revealing the fundamental mechanisms for contact engineering are of vital importance for microelectronic devices. Here, in this study, the annealing induced interfacial reactions at Cu-ReSe 2 contact are dynamically revealed from the atomic scale. Accompanied by the diffusion of Se to Cu, ReSe 2 is gradually decomposed to a thin Re interlayer through a “chain-by-chain” manner. Theoretical calculations show that the Cu atoms can facilitate the chemical bond breaking of ReSe 2 , significantly lowering the Se diffusion energy barrier toward Cu. The formed Re/ReSe 2 heterostructure presents a metal-like band structure, which underscores the critical role of Cu in altering the interfacial chemistry and promoting carrier transport across the interface. Our results can provide vital insights into the contact properties of ReSe 2 and provide a possible method for fabricating high-performance ReSe 2 -based devices.

Ferromagnetic Interlayer Exchange Coupling in a Few Layers of CrSBr on a Gold Thin Film

Abstract The two-dimensional character of van der Waals magnets allows for efficient control of their properties via proximity effects and electrical stimuli, making them promising candidates for application in spin electronics. We use spin-polarized low-energy electron microscopy to directly image the magnetic texture of thin CrSBr on top of a Au film, discovering a ferromagnetic ground state. We argue that the stabilization of the ferromagnetic ordering─as compared to the conventional antiferromagnetic one─is obtained via electron transfer from the Au film to the CrSBr flakes, in agreement with ab initio density functional theory calculations. Reflected-electron spectroscopy shows clear differences in the unoccupied density of states between a few layers of CrSBr on Au and bulk CrSBr, pointing toward electronic band structure modification in thin CrSBr. This work sheds light on the possibility of tuning the magnetic properties of two-dimensional magnets via substrate engineering.

High-Quality SnSe 2 Single Crystals: Electronic and Thermoelectric Properties

In this work, high-quality SnSe 2 single crystals were successfully synthesized using a temperature gradient method. N-type characteristics and strong anisotropic transport properties of SnSe 2 single crystals were exhibited between the ab plane and the c-axis. At 673 K, the power factor (PF) value along the ab plane is 3.43 μW cm -1 K -2 , while it is 0.92 μW cm -1 K -2 along the c-axis. The ratio between thermal conductivities along the ab plane (κ ab ) and c-axis (κ c ) is on the order of 7.6 at 300 K, while this value is about 5.6 at 673 K. The thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) in the c-axis (0.15) is higher than that (0.1) along the ab plane, according to the ultralow out-of-plane thermal conductivity. The electronic band structure results, which were examined by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) predicted the potential of improving the thermoelectric performance of SnSe 2 single crystals by electron doping.

Electrochemical Oxidation of Metal–Catechol Complexes as a New Synthesis Route to the High-Quality Ternary Photoelectrodes: A Case Study of Fe 2 TiO 5 Photoanodes

A new electrochemical, solution-based synthesis method to prepare uniform multinary oxide photoelectrodes was developed. This method involves solubilizing multiple metal ions as metal-catechol complexes in a pH condition where they are otherwise insoluble. When some of the catechol ligands are electrochemically oxidized, the remaining metal complexes become insoluble and are deposited as metal-catechol films on the working electrode. The resulting films are then annealed to form crystalline multinary oxide electrodes. Since catechol can serve as a complexing agent for a variety of metal ions, the newly developed method can be used to prepare a variety of multinary oxide films. In the present study, we used this method to prepare n-type Fe 2 TiO 5 photoanodes and investigated their photoelectrochemical properties for use in a photoelectrochemical water splitting cell. We also performed a computational investigation with two goals. The first goal was to investigate small electron polaron formation in Fe 2 TiO 5 . Charge transport in most oxide photoelectrodes involves small polaron hopping, but small polaron formation in Fe 2 TiO 5 has not been examined prior to this work. The second goal was to investigate the effect of substitutional Sn doping at the Fe site on the electronic band structure and the carrier concentration of Fe 2 TiO 5 . Here, the combined experimental and theoretical results presented in this study greatly improve our understanding of Fe 2 TiO 5 for use as a photoanode.

Unveiling the Degradation Mechanism of High-Temperature Superconductor Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+δ in Water-Bearing Environments

We report the physical properties of copper oxide high-temperature superconductors have been studied extensively, such as its band structure, and doping effects of Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+δ (Bi-2212). However, some chemical-related properties of these superconductors are rarely reported, such as their stability in air. Here, we report experiments combined with ab initio calculations that address the effects of water in contact with Bi-2212. The evolution of Bi-2212 flake with exposure to water for different time intervals were tested and characterized by optical microscopy (OM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), Raman spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electrical measurements. The thickness of Bi-2212 flakes is gradually decreased in water, and some thin flakes can be completely etched away after a few days. The stability of Bi-2212 in other solvents is also evaluated, including alcohol, acetone, HCl and KOH. The morphology of Bi-2212 flakes is relatively stable in organic solvents. However, the flakes are etched relatively quick in HCl and KOH, especially in acidic environment. Our results imply that hydrogen ion is primarily responsible for the deterioration of their properties. Both TEM and calculation results demonstrate that the atoms in Bi-O plane is relatively stable when compared to the inner atoms in Sr-O, Ca-O and Cu-O planes. This work contributes towards understanding the chemical stability of Bi-2212 superconducting device in environmental medium, which is important for both fundamental studies and practical applications of copper oxide high-temperature superconductors.

Stretchable Photodiodes with Polymer-Engineered Semiconductor Nanowires for Wearable Photoplethysmography

Healthcare systems worldwide have been stressed to provide sufficient resources to serve the increasing and aging population in our society. The situation became more challenging at the time of pandemic. Technology advancement, especially the adoption of wearable health monitoring devices, has provided an important supplement to current clinical equipment. Most health monitoring devices are rigid, however, human tissues are soft. Such a difference has prohibited intimate contact between the two and jeopardized wearing comfortableness, which hurdles measurement accuracy especially during longtime usage. Here, in this work, we report a soft and stretchable photodiode that can conformally adhere onto the human body without any pressure and measure cardiovascular variables for an extended period with higher reliability than commercial devices. The photodiode used a composite light absorber consisting of an organic bulk heterojunction embedded into an elastic polymer matrix. It is discovered that the elastic polymer matrix not only improves the morphology of the bulk heterojunction for obtaining the desired mechanical properties but also alters its electronic band structure and improves the electrical properties that lead to a reduced dark current and enhanced photovoltage in the stretchable photodiode. The work has demonstrated high fidelity measurements and longtime monitoring of heat rate variability and oxygen saturation, potentially enabling next-generation wearable photoplethysmography devices for point-of-care diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases in a more accessible and affordable way.

Strongly Confined Bismuth Antimonide Quantum Dots

Bismuth antimonide (Bi 1−x Sb x ) has emerged as a highly promising material for quantum applications due to its complex band structure. In this study, spherical Bi 1−x Sb x quantum dots (QDs), with a diameter of around 8 ± 2 nm, were successfully synthesized by pulsed laser ablation in liquids. The energy bandgap was determined at 2.02 ± 0.27 eV, which is significantly higher than the bulk value (∼0.025 eV). The strong confinement nature of the dots was confirmed by the Raman peak shifts. The chemical composition of the Bi 1−x Sb x QDs was measured to be around 77 ± 2 at. % of Bi and 23 ± 2 at. % of Sb. The colloid containing the Bi 1−x Sb x QDs was classified as highly stable, displaying a zeta potential of −38 ± 18 mV. Finally, the Bi 1−x Sb x QDs exhibited an electron spin resonance (ESR) signal at room temperature and at cryogenic temperature (4.2 K); consequently, revealing the presence of paramagnetic states.

Kirigami Photopiezo Catalysts for Self-Sustainable Environment Remediation

Photo(electro)-piezo catalysis has emerged as one of the most effective strategies for sustainable environmental remediation. While various (nano)materials have been investigated for enhancing the intrinsic properties related to the interfacial band structure, increasing the efficiency by integration of materials with rational design for stress–strain applications has not yet been considered. Herein, we introduce kirigami strain engineering to photopiezo catalysts for enhancing efficiency by increasing the magnitude of applied strain and density of bends. Macroscale stretching motion is converted into localized bending by a pliable kirigami structure using similar or even lower input energy, which can be easily modulated by natural waves. The kirigami structure leads to a significant enhancement (~250%) in the degradation of dyes, and we discovered the significant contribution of the oxygen reduction pathway in the charge-transfer mechanism, which corresponds to the observed enhancement. In conclusion, the photopiezo catalytic effects of kirigami were further highlighted by the small water reservoir test, showing its feasibility in nature for self-sustainable environmental remediation that can be modulated using motions of winds, waves, and life vibrations.

Mixed-Chalcogen 2D Silver Phenylchalcogenides (AgE 1– x E x Ph; E = S, Se, Te)

Alloying is a powerful strategy for tuning the electronic band structure and optical properties of semiconductors. Here, we investigate the thermodynamic stability and excitonic properties of mixed-chalcogen alloys of two-dimensional (2D) hybrid organic-inorganic silver phenylchalcogenides (AgEPh; E = S, Se, Te). Using a variety of structural and optical characterization techniques, we demonstrate that the AgSePh-AgTePh system forms homogeneous alloys (AgSe 1-x Te x Ph, 0 ≤ x ≤ 1) across all compositions, whereas the AgSPh-AgSePh and AgSPh-AgTePh systems exhibit distinct miscibility gaps. Density functional theory calculations reveal that chalcogen mixing is energetically unfavorable in all cases, but comparable in magnitude to the ideal entropy of mixing at room temperature. Because AgSePh and AgTePh have the same crystal structure (which is different from AgSPh), alloying is predicted to be thermodynamically preferred over phase separation in the case of AgSePh-AgTePh, whereas phase separation is predicted to be more favorable than alloying for both the AgSPh-AgSePh and AgSPh-AgTePh systems, in agreement with experimental observations. Homogeneous AgSe1-xTexPh alloys exhibit continuously tunable excitonic absorption resonances in the ultraviolet-visible range, while the emission spectrum reveals competition between exciton delocalization and self-trapping behavior. Altogether, these observations provide new insight into the thermodynamics of 2D silver phenylchalcogenides and the effect of lattice composition on electron-phonon interactions in 2D hybrid organic-inorganic semiconductors.

Emergent Above-Gap Photoluminescence in Molecularly Engineered Hybrid Bilayer Crystals

Bilayer crystals, built by stacking two-dimensional (2D) covalent monolayers, give rise to coupled excitonic states whose properties are constrained by fixed lattice symmetry and orientation. Replacing one covalent monolayer with a 2D molecular crystal––held together by non-covalent forces––overcomes this limitation, as molecular functional groups afford tunable in-plane lattice geometry, intermolecular spacing, and interlayer coupling, providing a powerful knob for exciton engineering. Here, in this study, we report four-atom-thick hybrid bilayer crystals (HBCs) synthesized by directly growing single-crystalline PDI molecular crystal atop WS 2 monolayers, which exhibit a robust photoluminescence (PL) peak 120 meV above the WS 2 optical band gap alongside a belowgap emission. Both peaks display strong polarization anisotropy—nearing unity for the above-gap emission—and maintain a perfectly linear power-law dependence up to an excitation density of ~10 7 mW/cm 2 , indicative of coexisting localized and delocalized excitonic states. Substituting PDI with a PTCDA monolayer on WS 2 fully quenches PL, demonstrating molecular control over excitonic emission. Lattice scale ab initio GW and GW-BSE calculations reveal a significantly hybridized bilayer band structure in PDI/WS 2 that supports interlayer excitonic species both above and below the WS 2 gap with strong polarization anisotropy, in excellent agreement with experiment. Our work introduces a molecule-based bilayer platform for the bottom-up design and control of excitonic phenomena in atomically thin optoelectronic and quantum materials.

Ultrafast Nanoimaging of Carrier Funneling in Composition-Graded Semiconductor Nanowires

Recent advances in bandgap engineering of low-dimensional semiconductors have enabled high-efficiency carrier transport in miniaturized electronic and optoelectronic devices. The physical properties and functionalities of these materials are governed by complex carrier dynamics coupled with multiple transport mechanisms in tailored band structures. Here, we report ultrafast nanoimaging of carrier funneling and recombination in composition-grade CdSxSe1-x nanowires using pump-probe near-field nanoscopy. Leveraging the high resolution of this technique in both space and time, we resolve nanoscale local carrier dynamics along composition-graded nanowires, revealing the local variation of composition-dependent carrier mobilities and lifetimes that significantly differ from their uniform composition counterparts. Furthermore, we demonstrate a length-dependent behavior wherein shorter nanowires exhibit enhanced funneling effects, accelerating carrier transport by up to 33%. Our findings provide direct visualization of nanoscale carrier transport while supporting an effective approach for investigating complex carrier interactions in inhomogeneous semiconductor nanostructures, with implications for optimizing next-generation optoelectronic devices.

Covalent Organic Framework Photocatalysts for Water Oxidation and Overall Artificial Photosynthesis

Artificial photosynthesis through proton reduction or CO 2 reduction to generate chemical fuels has gained increasing attention as an attractive strategy for solar-to-fuel conversion. In these systems, the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) provides the necessary electrons and protons for driving the overall reaction but represents the rate-limiting step due to its inherently sluggish kinetics. Therefore, efficient overall artificial photosynthesis requires photocatalysts that can drive both the oxidation and reduction half-reactions, which impose stringent demands on catalyst design. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) offer a versatile platform for designing such photocatalysts, owing to their strong light-harvesting capabilities , periodic architectures, and highly tunable frameworks that allow programmable catalytic sites and adjustable electronic band structures. While notable progress has been made in developing COF photocatalysts for the OER and overall artificial photosynthesis, these advances remain scattered across the literature and existing reviews, and a dedicated, systematic overview of the OER and its central role in integrated artificial photosynthetic processes is still lacking. This Review systematically summarizes recent advances in COF-based photocatalysts for the OER half-reaction and overall artificial photosynthesis. Our aim is to offer a comprehensive roadmap that establishes fundamental design principles for next-generation COF-based photocatalysts toward efficient and sustainable artificial photosynthesis.
