Cloud phase and macrophysical properties over the Southern Ocean during the MARCUS field campaign

To investigate the cloud phase and macrophysical properties over the Southern Ocean (SO), the Department of Energy (DOE) Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Mobile Facility (AMF2) was installed on the Australian icebreaker research vessel (R/V) Aurora Australis during the Measurements of Aerosols, Radiation, and Clouds over the Southern Ocean (MARCUS) field campaign (41 to 69° S, 60 to 160° E) from October 2017 to March 2018. To examine cloud properties over the midlatitude and polar regions, the study domain is separated into the northern (NSO) and southern (SSO) parts of the SO, with a demarcation line of 60°S. The total cloud fractions (CFs) were 77.9 %, 67.6 %, and 90.3 % for the entire domain, NSO and SSO, respectively, indicating that higher CFs were observed in the polar region. Low-level clouds and deep convective clouds are the two most common cloud types over the SO.

The ocean model for E3SM global applications: Omega version 0.1.0 – a new high-performance computing code for exascale architectures

This paper introduces Omega, the Ocean Model for E3SM Global Applications. Omega is a new ocean model designed to run efficiently on high performance computing (HPC) platforms, including exascale heterogeneous architectures with accelerators, such as Graphics Processing Units (GPUs). Omega is written in C and uses the Kokkos performance portability library. These were chosen because they are well-supported and will help future-proof Omega for upcoming HPC architectures. Omega will eventually replace the Model for Prediction Across Scales-Ocean (MPAS-Ocean) in the US Department of Energy's (DOE's) Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM). Omega runs on unstructured horizontal meshes with variable-resolution capability and implements the same horizontal discretization as MPAS-Ocean. This work documents the design and performance of Omega Version 0.1.0 (Omega-V0), which solves the shallow water equations with passive tracers and is the first step towards the full primitive equation ocean model. On Central Processing Units (CPUs), Omega-V0 is 1.4 times faster than MPAS-Ocean with the same configuration. Omega-V0 is more efficient on GPUs than CPUs on a per-watt basis – by a factor of 5.3 on Frontier and 3.6 on Aurora, two of the world's fastest exascale computers.

MARCUS Ice Nucleating Particle Measurements (revised 7/2020)

These data list ice nucleating particle (INP) number concentrations active in the immersion freezing mode. Aerosol filters were collected during 4 voyages of the Aurora Australis vessel from 02 November 2017 to 22 March 2018, as part of the Measurements of Aerosols, Radiation and Clouds over the Southern Ocean (MARCUS) study. These voyages transected the Southern Ocean from Hobart, Tasmania to four Australian Antarctic Division stations, including three in Antarctica. Collections were made over alternating periods of 24 and 48 hours using open-faced polycarbonate filters that were approximately 18 m MSL, sited near the AOS trailer and other AMF measurements. The volume of air filtered ranged from 19000 to 38000 standard liters per filter sample. Filters were stored and returned frozen to Colorado State University (CSU), where immersion freezing measurements over a range from 0 to -28 degC were made using the CSU Ice Spectrometer (IS). Collected particles from each filter were resuspended in filtered, deionized water, and then dispensed into the IS and cooled to obtain cumulative INP temperature spectra. Aliquots of suspensions from selected samples were also heat treated (95 degC for 20 min) to denature and deactivate biological INPs, and digested in 10% H2O2 at 95 degC under UV-B for 20 min to remove all organic carbon INPs, prior to measurement using the IS.

Particle transport constraints via Bayesian spectral fitting of multiple atomic lines

Optimized operation of fusion devices demands detailed understanding of plasma transport, a problem that must be addressed with advances in both measurement and data analysis techniques. In this work, we adopt Bayesian inference methods to determine experimental particle transport, leveraging opportunities from high-resolution He-like ion spectra in a tokamak plasma. The Bayesian spectral fitting code is used to analyze resonance (w), forbidden (z), intercombination (x, y), and satellite (k, j) lines of He-like Ca following laser blow-off injections on Alcator C-Mod. This offers powerful transport constraints since these lines depend differently on electron temperature and density, but also differ in their relation to Li-like, He-like, and H-like ion densities, often the dominant Ca charge states over most of the C-Mod plasma radius. Using synthetic diagnostics based on the AURORA package, we demonstrate improved effectiveness of impurity transport inferences when spectroscopic data from a progressively larger number of lines are included.

Van Allen Discovery Most Important

The first step toward the exploration of space occurred approximately 22 months ago as a part of the International Geophysical Year. In the short interval since October, 1957, the new tools of research, the satellite and the space rocket, have produced two unexpected results of fundamental scientific importance. First, instruments placed in the Explorer satellites by James A. Van Allen have revealed the existence of layers of energetic particles in the outer atmosphere. This discovery constitutes the most significant research achievement of the IGY satellite program. The layers may provide the explanation for the aurora and other geophysical phenomena, and they will also influence the design of vehicles for manned space flight, whose occupants must be shielded against their harmful biological effects. Second, the shape of the earth has been determined very accurately with the aid of data from the first Vanguard. As a result of this investigation, we have found that our planet tends toward the shape of a pear, with its stem at the North Pole. This discovery may produce major changes in our ideas on the interior structure of the earth.

The micrometeoroid satellite explorer xiii /1961 chi/

Observations of v.h.f.-bistatic-aurora-backscatter-communications on 145 Mc/s within Middle Europe and from Middle Europe to Great Britain and Scandinavia covering the period from 1957 to the beginning of 1963 are analyzed with respect to the probability of occurrence of these phenomena as a function of the magnetic dip angle and the degree of geomagnetic activity. An interpretation is given of the obtained results.
