Laser-electron beam interaction applied to optical amplifiers and oscillators

Momentum modulation of a relativistic electron beam by a Nd:YAG laser is demonstrated. The electrons, at 100 MeV energy, interact with the laser light in helium gas at standard temperature and pressure. At an angle of 6.55 mrad between the two wavevectors, corresponding to the Cerenkov angle, a given electron remains in a field of constant phase as it passes through the light beam. The experimental arrangement is illustrated showing the trajectories of the electron and light. The particle momentum is measured by a mass spectrometer, and the angle between the wavevectors is controlled by a rotatable mirror. Experimental results indicate that momentum modulation of an electron beam may be used for amplification. A possible configuration for an optical klystron is illustrated.

Low-noise video amplifiers for imaging CCD's

Various techniques were developed which enable the CCD (charge coupled device) imaging array user to obtain optimum performance from the device. A CCD video channel was described, and detector-preamplifier interface requirements were examined. A noise model for the system was discussed at length and laboratory data presented and compared to predicted results.

Development and performance of power processor system for 2-gigahertz, 200-watt amplifier for communications technology satellite

The electrical and environmental requirements for a power processor system (PPS) designed to supply the appropriate voltages and currents to a 200-watt traveling wave tube (TWT) for a communication technology satellite is described. A block diagram of the PPS, the interface requirements between the PPS and spacecraft, the interface requirements between the PPS and 200-watt TWT, and the environmental requirements of the PPS are presented. Also included are discussions of protection circuits, interlocking sequences, and transient requirements. Predictions of the flight performance, based on ground test data, are provided.

Secondary-electron-emission properties of conducting surfaces with application to multistage depressed collectors for microwave amplifiers

To improve the efficiency of high power microwave tubes, low secondary electron yield electrode surface for use in depressed collectors are needed. The secondary emission characteristics of a number of materials were investigated. The materials studied were beryllium, carbon (soot and pyrolytic graphite), copper, titanium carbide, and tantalum. Both total secondary yield delta and relative reflected primary yield were measured. These measurements were made in conjunction with Auger spectroscopy so that the secondary emission characteristics could be determined as a function of surface contamination or purity. The results show that low atomic weight elements, such as beryllium and carbon, have the lowest reflected primary yield and that roughening the surface of an electrode can markedly decrease secondary yield both for delta and reflected primaries. All factors considered, a roughened pyrolytic graphite surface showed the greatest potential for use as an electrode surface in depressed collectors.

Comments on measuring the overall and the depressed collector efficiency in TWT's and klystron amplifiers

Kosmahl and Ramins (1977), who reported results achieved with broadband, high-performance TWT's, augmented with multistage depressed collectors for higher overall efficiency, have pointed out the necessity for accurately measuring and correctly defining the various power terms involved. In view of the now wide-spread use of depressed collectors and reported results, the definitions of tube and collector efficiency are restated and comments are provided on the sensitivity of these terms to various sources of experimental and definitional errors in order to permit a uniform evaluation of collector performance.

Ultra-low-noise microwave amplifiers

The highlights of 20 years of maser use and development are presented. Masers discussed include cavity, traveling wave, K band, and S band. Noise temperatures measured since 1960 are summarized. Use of masers in the Deep Space Network is presented. Costs associated with the construction of masers systems are given.

Wideband Amplifier With Subpicosecond Stability

RF circuit offers high isolation as well as phase stability. For temperature stability, all circuit components are contained in closed metal housing; packages of active circuit elements are embedded in common heat sink. Provisions not only slow down effect of ambient temperature changes on individual devices but also reduce temperature differences across devices so that differential temperature effects vanish.

Amplified crossflow disturbances in the laminar boundary layer on swept wings with suction

Solution charts of the Orr-Sommerfeld equation for stationary crossflow disturbances are presented for 10 typical velocity profiles on a swept laminar flow control wing. The critical crossflow Reynolds number is shown to be a function of a boundary layer shape factor. Amplification rates for crossflow disturbances are shown to be proportional to the maximum crossflow velocity. A computer stability program called MARIA, employing the amplification rate data for the 10 crossflow velocity profiles, is constructed. This code is shown to adequately approximate more involved computer stability codes using less than two percent as much computer time while retaining the essential physical disturbance growth model.

Analytic investigation of efficiency and performance limits in klystron amplifiers using multidimensional computer programs; multi-stage depressed collectors; and thermionic cathode life studies

Due to complexity of the program which used a hydrodynamic, axially and radially deformable disk-ring model and the resulting long computing time only the output gap was investigated. Results from independent studies were used to initiate the starting conditions for the electrons and the RF voltage using our program. Although this method of computation is less exact than processing the entire klystron interaction in 3-Dimensions it is shown that, for a confined flow focused throughout the penultimate cavity, radial velocities remain very small and the beam is highly laminar. It is concluded that possible errors resulting from treating only the output cavity in 3-D would remain small.

Magnetic refrigeration for maser amplifier cooling

The development of a multifrequency upconverter-maser system for the DSN has created the need to develop a closed-cycle refrigerator (CCR) capable of providing more than 3 watts of refrigeration capability at 4.5 K. In addition, operating concerns such as the high cost of electrical power consumption and the loss of maser operation due to CCR failures require that improvements be made to increase the efficiency and reliability of the CCR. One refrigeration method considered is the replacement of the Joule-Thomson expansion circuit with a magnetic refrigeration. Magnetic refrigerators can provide potentially reliable and highly efficient refrigeration at a variety of temperature ranges and cooling power. The concept of magnetic refrigeration is summarized and a literature review of existing magnetic refrigerator designs which have been built and tested and that may also be considered as possibilities as a 4 K to 15 K magnetic refrigeration stage for the DSN closed-cycle refrigerator is provided.

Collaborative research in tunneling and field emission pumped surface wave local oscillators and amplifiers for infrared and submillimeter wavelengths under director's discretionary fund

Progress is reported in work towards the development of surface wave sources for the infrared and sub-millimeter portion of the spectrum to be based upon electron pumping by tunneling electrons in metal-barrier-metal or metal-barrier-semiconductor devices. Tunneling phenomena and the coupling of radiation to tunnel junctions were studied. The propagation characteristics of surface electro-magnetic modes in metal-insulator-p(++) semiconductor structures as a function of frequency were calculated. A model for the gain process based upon Tucker's formalism was developed and used to estimate what low frequency gain might be expected from such structures. The question of gain was addressed from a more fundamental viewpoint using the method of Lasher and Stern.
