Formulation refinement and access to space for the ST8 mission

This paper tells the story of the steps taken in the formulation refinement of the ST8 mission leading to its establishment as a formal flight project, with some insights and comments on the benefits and risks of the approach.

Comparative Study of Antenna Elements for TDRSS Enhanced Multiple Access System

We compare three antennas, which are candidates for the TDRSS-Continuation enhanced MA array antenna elements. Measured and simulated data show very good agreement for all antenna elements. All of the antennas meet the specifications with the exception of the SBA isolation. However, improvements can likely be made with further design efforts.

Accessing Small Inner Working Angles with a Rotating Sub-Aperture Nuller

A new approach to high contrast observations near bright stars with a single-aperture telescope is discussed, which is based on the idea of a rotating separated-aperture nulling interferometer. The approach can be described as a rotating sub-aperture nuller, because it nulls two or more sub-apertures within a single telescope's pupil, and uses baseline rotation to modulate the signals from off-axis sources in a manner similar to that of potential space-based nulling interferometers. The sub-aperture beams can be combined in a number of ways, including a fiber nuller and a rotational shearing interferometer. Such a rotating nulling coronagraph has two great advantages. First, it can be used on a ground-based telescope to test signal reconstruction approaches pertinent to potential space-based nulling interferometers. Moreover, it also has the potential to enable ground-based coronagraphic observations of faint off-axis companions very close to bright stars.

Microwave powered sterile access port

A device and method for elimination of contamination during transfer of materials either into or from bioreactors, food containers, or other microbially vulnerable systems. Using microwave power, thermal sterilizations of mating fixtures are achieved simply, reliably, and quickly by the volatilization of small quantities of water to produce superheated steam which contacts all exposed surfaces.

A-site- and/or B-site-modified PbZrTiO3 materials and (Pb, Sr, Ca, Ba, Mg) (Zr, Ti, Nb, Ta)O3 films having utility in ferroelectric random access memories and high performance thin film microactuators

A modified PbZrTiO.sub.3 perovskite crystal material thin film, wherein the PbZrTiO.sub.3 perovskite crystal material includes crystal lattice A-sites and B-sites at least one of which is modified by the presence of a substituent selected from the group consisting of (i) A-site substituents consisting of Sr, Ca, Ba and Mg, and (ii) B-site substituents selected from the group consisting of Nb and Ta. The perovskite crystal thin film material may be formed by liquid delivery MOCVD from metalorganic precursors of the metal components of the thin film, to form PZT and PSZT, and other piezoelectric and ferroelectric thin film materials. The thin films of the invention have utility in non-volatile ferroelectric memory devices (NV-FeRAMs), and in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) as sensor and/or actuator elements, e.g., high speed digital system actuators requiring low input power levels.

Improving Access to Precipitation Data for GIS Users: Designing for Ease of Use

The Global Precipitation Measurement Mission (GPM) is a NASA/JAXA led international mission to configure a constellation of space-based radiometers to monitor precipitation over the globe. The GPM goal of making global 3-hour precipitation products available in near real-time will make such global products more useful to a broader community of modelers and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) users than is currently the case with remote sensed precipitation products. Based on the existing interest to make Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) data available to a growing community of GIS users as well as what will certainly be an expanded community during the GPM era, it is clear that data systems must make a greater effort to provide data in formats easily used by GIS. We describe precipitation GIS products being developed for TRMM data. These products will serve as prototypes for production efforts during the GPM era. We describe efforts to convert TRMM precipitation data to GeoTIFF, Shapefile, and ASCII grid. Clearly, our goal is to format GPM data so that it can be easily used within GIS applications. We desire feedback on these efforts and any additions or direction changes that should be undertaken by the data system.
