Carbon–Oxygen Classical Novae Are Galactic 7 Li Producers as well as Potential Supernova Ia Progenitors

Here, we report on studies of classical nova (CN) explosions where we follow the evolution of thermonuclear runaways (TNRs) on carbon–oxygen (CO) white dwarfs (WDs). We vary both the mass of the WD (from 0.6 M ⊙ to 1.35 M ⊙ ) and the composition of the accreted material. Our simulations are guided by the results of multidimensional studies of TNRs in WDs, which find that sufficient mixing with WD core material occurs after the TNR is well underway, and levels of enrichment are reached that agree with observations of CN ejecta abundances. We use NOVA (our one-dimensional hydrodynamic code) to accrete solar matter until the TNR is ongoing and then switch to a mixed composition (either 25% WD material and 75% solar or 50% WD material and 50% solar). Because the amount of accreted material is inversely proportional to the initial 12 C abundance, by first accreting solar matter the amount of material taking part in the outburst is larger than in those simulations where we assume a mixed composition from the beginning. Our results show large enrichments of 7 Be in the ejected gases, implying that CO CNe may be responsible for a significant fraction (~100 M ⊙ ) of the 7 Li in the galaxy (~1000 M ⊙ ). Although the ejected gases are enriched in WD material, the WDs in these simulations eject less material than they accrete. We predict that the WD is growing in mass as a consequence of the accretion–outburst–accretion cycle, and CO CNe may be an important channel for SN Ia progenitors.

H I Depletion Begins Well Beyond the Virial Radius: A FAST Stacking Study of 36 Galaxy Clusters to 5 × R 200

Abstract We present a stacking study of the neutral atomic hydrogen (H i ) content in and around 36 local galaxy clusters at z < 0.07, using a combination of the FAST All Sky H i survey (FASHI) and the extensive spectroscopic catalog mainly from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI). We employ spectral stacking techniques to probe the average H i mass and HI-to-stellar mass ratio ( M HI / M * ) for member galaxies down to stellar masses of M * ∼ 10 9 M ⊙ , spanning a projected cluster-centric distance of up to 5 R 200 . Our analysis reveals a pronounced environmental effect; both M HI and M HI / M * decrease steadily toward the cluster center, dropping by ∼0.5 dex on average from the outskirts to the core. Crucially, we find that M HI / M * of galaxies remain lower than the field galaxies even at the 5 R 200 . This provides direct, statistical evidence for substantial gas stripping and preprocessing in the cluster outskirts, likely occurring in infalling groups and large-scale filaments. By further splitting the sample by g − r color, we show that the H i deficiency persists at fixed galaxy color; even the bluest cluster members exhibit ∼0.5 dex lower M HI / M * than field galaxies of similar color, reflecting environmental effects on the cold gas reservoir prior to full optical transformation. The total H i mass within clusters and their outskirts agrees broadly with predictions from cosmological simulations. Our results underscore the critical role of the extended cluster environment in quenching galaxies by depleting their cold gas reservoirs well before they enter the dense cluster core.

The possible participation of esters as well as amides in prebiotic polymers.

Demonstration that alpha-hydroxy acids may have participated in the formation of prebiological polymers in a manner similar to the participation of alpha-amino acids. Ex periments are described which indicate that the system for forming peptide bonds in present-day biological organisms is equally competent in forming ester and polyester bonds. In particular, the experiments described are directed toward answering questions regarding the action of peptidyl transferase in ester formation. Also, an attempt is made to determine whether a complete protein synthetic system can operate with transfer RNA molecules which have alpha-hydroxyl acids attached to them instead of alpha-amino acids, using both synthetic and natural mRNA. The ability of ribosomal peptidyl transferase to catalyze the formation of an ester bond as well as its normal product, the peptide bond, is demonstrated.

Radiative transfer in spherical circumstellar dust envelopes. III - Dust envelope models of some well known infrared stars

The radiative transfer techniques described elsewhere by the author have been employed to construct dust envelope models of several well known infrared stars. The resulting calculations indicate that the infrared emissivity of circumstellar grains generally must be higher than that which many calculations of small nonsilicate grains yield. This conclusion is dependent to some degree on the (unknown) size of the stellar envelopes considered, but is quite firm in the case of the spatially resolved envelope of IRC + 10216. Further observations of the spatial distribution of the infrared radiation from stellar envelopes will be invaluable in deciphering the properties of the circumstellar grains.

Lunar petrogenesis in a well-stirred magma ocean

The principal group of low-KREEP highlands rocks as indicated by quartz-olivine-anorthite pseudoternary phase diagrams shows chemical trends which violate the Bowen reaction principle, in that the greater the concentration of magnesian and mafic minerals, the more sodic the coexisting plagioclase tends to be. It is suggested that this trend was established during the primary differentiation of the lunar crust and is a result of crystallization in a vigorously convecting (well-stirred) system. Under these conditions all plagioclase crystals, all pyroxene crystals, and all of the residual liquid remain fairly uniform in composition until advanced crystallization immobilizes the system. The rock suite then established would vary continuously from anorthositic types at the top to ultramafic types at the bottom.
