NASCAP modelling of high-voltage power system interactions with space charged-particle environments

The NASA Charging Analyzer Program (NASCAP), an engineering tool capable of analyzing the impact of the charged particle environment on spacecraft surfaces and systems, is described. NASCAP is a quasi-static computational program which analyzes the charging of a 3-dimensional complex body as a function of time and system-generated voltages for given space environmental conditions. The material properties of the surfaces are taken into account; the surface potentials, low energy sheath, potential distribution in space and particle trajectories are calculated. An application of NASCAP to a simple space solar power station consisting of two 6 m by 18 m solar array wings surrounding a central body is presented. Each solar array wing is considered to be divided into three regions operating at 2000 volts. Results of NASCAP analysis of the system for a normal environment and a moderate geomagnetic substorm environment are discussed.

Voltage feed through apparatus having reduced partial discharge

A voltage feed-through apparatus, having reduced partial discharge, has an electrical conductor and an electrical terminal connected thereto. A semiconductor sleeve surrounds the conductor for reducing the electric field concentration at the metallic conductor surface and consequently reducing the partial discharge occurrences. An insulator sleeve encircles the semiconductor sleeve. A metallic sleeve surrounds a portion of the terminal. Another insulator is connected to the metallic sleeve and surrounds a portion of the insulator sleeve forming a space therebetween. Another metallic sleeve spaced from the first metallic sleeve surrounds a portion of the other insulator.

Interaction of high voltage surfaces with the space plasma

High voltage solar arrays provide spacecraft power while optimizing mass and power efficiency. Operating such arrays in the space plasma environment can result in anomalously large currents being collected through insulation defects. Two thicknesses of the insulating material were tested, with no effect found due to insulator thickness. In these tests the polyimide thickness was always much less than the pinhole diameter. The pinhole area was varied over an area range of more than 30:1. It was found that the current collected was independent of the pinhole area for hole diameters from 0.35 to 2.0 mm. Two types of adhesives were tried in two different configurations. The adhesives were chosen for their extreme difference in vacuum qualifications. Neither adhesive types nor configuration made a significant difference in current collection. The temperature of the insulating material was also varied. It was found that current collection decreased with increasing temperature. Tests were conducted to see if pinhole current collection decreased with time, as was indicated by the effects of several short tests. Current was collected for over four hours while the conductor potential was held constant at 1000 volts. A smooth decrease with time was not observed, but rather a roughly constant current collection with brief surges to high values. Tests were also conducted with the simulated solar cell biased negative. The current was found to be proportional to pinhole area.

High-voltage spark carbon-fiber sticky-tape data analyzer

An efficient method for detecting carbon fibers collected on a stick tape monitor was developed. The fibers were released from a simulated crash fire situation containing carbon fiber composite material. The method utilized the ability of the fiber to initiate a spark across a set of alternately biased high voltage electrodes to electronically count the number of fiber fragments collected on the tape. It was found that the spark, which contains high energy and is of very short duration, is capable of partially damaging or consuming the fiber fragments. It also creates a mechanical disturbance which ejects the fiber from the grid. Both characteristics were helpful in establishing a single discharge pulse for each fiber segment.

Experimental simulation of space plasma interactions with high voltage solar arrays

Operating high voltage solar arrays in the space environment can result in anomalously large currents being collected through small insulation defects. Tests of simulated defects have been conducted in a 45-cm vacuum chamber with plasma densities of 100,000 to 1,000,000/cu cm. Plasmas were generated using an argon hollow cathode. The solar array elements were simulated by placing a thin sheet of polyimide (Kapton) insulation with a small hole in it over a conductor. Parameters tested were: hole size, adhesive, surface roughening, sample temperature, insulator thickness, insulator area. These results are discussed along with some preliminary empirical correlations.

Voltage Regulator for a dc-to-dc Converter

New voltage regulator isolates signals from power-switching converter without use of complex circuitry or optical couplers. Only addition is extra secondary winding on existing interstage transformer. Error signals shortcircuit new winding and inhibit converter action. Resistor in series with primary winding limits short-circuit current to prevent damage to circuit components. Extra transformer winding eliminates need for isolation components.

Voltage gradients in solar array cavities as possible breakdown sites in spacecraft-charging-induced discharges

A possible explanation for environmentally-induced discharges on geosynchronous satellites exists in the electric fields formed in the cavities between solar cells - the small gaps formed by the cover slides, solar cells, metallic interconnects and insulating substrate. When exposed to a substorm environment, the cover slides become less negatively charged than the spacecraft ground. If the resultant electric field becomes large enough, then the interconnect could emit electrons (probably by field emission) which could be accelerated to space by the positive voltage on the covers. An experimental study was conducted using a small solar array segment in which the interconnect potential was controlled by a power supply while the cover slides were irradiated by monoenergetic electrons. It was found that discharges could be triggered when the interconnect potential became at least 500 volts negative with respect to the cover slides. Analytical modeling of satellites exposed to substorm environments indicates that such gradients are possible. Therefore, it appears that this trigger mechanism for discharges is possible.

High voltage space plasma interactions

Two primary problems resulted from plasma interactions; one of concern to operations in geosynchronous orbit (GEO), the other in low orbits (LEO). The two problems are not the same. Spacecraft charging has become widely recognized as a problem, particularly for communications satellites operating in GEO. The very thin thermal plasmas at GEO are insufficient to bleed off voltage buildups due to higher energy charged particle radiation collected on outer surfaces. Resulting differential charging/discharging causes electrical transients, spurious command signals and possible direct overload damage. An extensive NASA/Air Force program has been underway for several years to address this problem. At lower altitudes, the denser plasmas of the plasmasphere/ionosphere provide sufficient thermal current to limit such charging to a few volts or less. Unfortunately, these thermal plasma currents which solve the GEO spacecraft charging problem can become large enough to cause just the opposite problem in LEO.

Use of the Charge/Discharge (C/D) ratio to aument voltage limit (V sub T) charge control in the ERBS spacecraft

A 50-ampere hour nickel cadmium cell test pack was operated in a power profile simulating the orbit of the Earth Radiation Budget Satellite (ERBS). The objective was to determine the ability of the temperature compensated voltage limit (V sub T) charge control system to maintain energy balance in the half sine wave-type current profile expected of this mission. The four-cell pack (50 E) was tested at the Naval Weapons Support Center (NWSC) at Crane, Indiana. The ERBS evaluation test consisted of two distinct operating sequences, each having a specific purpose. The first phase was a parametric test involving the effect of V sub T level, temperature, and Beta angle on the charge/discharge (C/D) ratio, an indicator of the amount of overcharge. The second phase of testing made use of the C/D ratio limit to augment the V sub T charge limit control. When the C/D limit was reached, the current was switched from the taper mode to a C/67 (0.75 A) trickle charge. The use of an ampere hour integrator limiting the overcharge to a C/67 rate provided a fine tuning of the charge control technique which eliminated the sensitivity problems noted in the initial operating sequence.
