EMT and Phasor-Domain Co-simulation of a Low Frequency AC Transmission System for Offshore Wind Integration

This work investigates system level interactions of multi-terminal low frequency high-voltage alternating current (LF-HVac) system using back-to back converters and grid-level 60 Hz system. A co-simulation framework by integrating high- fidelity dynamic model of multi-terminal LF-HVac system in electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation platform and phasor model of IEEE 39 bus system in transient-stability (phasor) program. The co-simulation framework for multi-terminal LF- HVac system with offshore wind integrated in a bulk power system is developed successfully and its steady state and dynamic operation is demonstrated and compared with EMT simulation. The co-simulation results show accurate representation of the dynamic responses with reduced computation burden and time compared to EMT platform.

3D Nanotomography of calcium silicate hydrates by transmission electron microscopy

Calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H), is the principal hydration product of Portland cement that mainly contributes to the physical and mechanical properties of concrete. This paper aims to investigate the three-dimensional structure of C-S-H with Ca/Si ratios of 1.0 and 1.6 at the nanoscale using electron tomography. The 3D reconstructions and selected region of interest analysis confirm that the morphology of both C-S-H materials are foil-like structures. Additionally, the difference between the two materials is the density of elongated structures. C-S-H with Ca/Si ratio 1.6 is clearly composed of denser particles compared to the other C-S-H material due to overlapping of the foil-like structure. Pore analysis shows that C-S-H 1.0 and C-S-H 1.6 have porosities 69.2% and 49.8% respectively. Pore size distribution also reveals that C-S-H 1.0 has pore size range between 0-250 nm and C-S-H 1.6 between 0-100 nm. The pore network's size of C-S-H 1.0 is significantly larger than 1.6. This study illustrates the capability of using electron tomography to determine the 3D nanoscale structure of cementitious products and to distinguish between C-S-H 1.0 and 1.6.

Transmission Capacity Allocation in Zonal Electricity Markets

In this work, we propose a novel framework for modeling zonal electricity markets, based on projecting the constraints of the nodal network onto the space of the zonal aggregation of the network. The framework avoids circular definitions and discretionary parameters, which are recurrent in the implementation and study of zonal markets. Using this framework, we model and analyze two zonal market designs currently present in Europe: flow-based market coupling (FBMC) and available-transfer-capacity market coupling (ATCMC). We develop cutting-plane algorithms for simulating FBMC and ATCMC while accounting for the robustness of imports/exports to single element failures, and we conduct numerical simulations of FBMC and ATCMC on a realistic instance of the Central Western European system under the equivalent of 100 years of operating conditions. We find that FBMC and ATCMC are unable to anticipate the congestion of branches interconnecting zones and branches within zones and that both zonal designs achieve similar overall cost efficiencies (0.01% difference), whereas a nodal market design largely outperforms both of them (5.09% better than FBMC). These findings raise the question of whether it is worth it for more European countries to switch from ATCMC to FBMC, instead of advancing directly toward a nodal market design.

Utah FORGE Hydrothermal Friction-Hydraulic Transmissivity Laboratory Experiments

Submission includes data from laboratory slide-hold-slide tests, combined with flow through tests, conducted on Westerly granite with 30 degree sawcut. Tests were conducted with a constant confining pressure of 30 MPa with an average pore pressure of 10 MPa at temperatures of 23 and 200 degC. Three fluid flow conditions were examined (1) no flow, (2) cycled flow, and (3) continuous flow. Data were collected to asses the effect of temperature and pore fluid on frictional healing rates in granite at geothermal conditions. Data is available in XML and JSON data types.

Clean Grid Vision: A U.S. Perspective - Chapter 3. Transmission Grid-Supporting Technologies

High renewable penetration will bring different challenges to power system reliability and stability. Reduction of inertia has been of concern for more wide-spread instable events; however, with the advanced control functionalities provided by power electronics interface and proper storage compensation, renewable generators are capable of providing wide-range of grid services that can maintain and improve grid reliability and stability matrices. Many studies and testing has demonstrated those functions and many pilot projects throughout the world had proved the concepts are working.

Enhancing grid reliability and resilience through novel DER control, total situational awareness and integrated distribution-transmission representation

High penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs) can lead to overvoltage and thermal violations, miscoordination of protection devices and potential adverse control interactions. The challenges are exacerbated by a lack of operator situational awareness of behind-the-meter DERs, and T&D interactions. Furthermore, the large attack surface of a DER environment creates significant cyber security challenges. The motivation is to address these barriers. The main goal is to enable extreme levels of DERs in distribution systems while simultaneously enhancing their reliability and resiliency. This is achieved by a data-driven approach for operation, planning and control of distribution systems with total situational awareness and real-time DER control enabled by a network of edge intelligent devices, a cloud-based analytical platform, and secure communications.

Current Best Practices on Wildfire Risk Reduction for Electric Transmission and Distribution Systems

This report provides a set of best practices in response to Section 4(d) of Executive Order 14308, Empowering Commonsense Wildfire Prevention and Response. The information contained herein is expected to be used in conjunction with other materials at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission Wildfire Risk Mitigation Technical Conference (Docket No. AD25-16-000), with possible direction to the North American Electric Reliability Corporation to take action. The objective of this report is to provide an overview of existing and emerging best practices currently employed or planned by utilities for wildfire mitigation, demonstrating how these efforts align with the executive order’s emphasis on reducing electric utility–caused wildfires while also balancing cost-effectiveness. Additionally, while most practices in utility-developed wildfire mitigation plans focus on risk reduction through robustness and operational reliability, this report also discusses best practices for resilience. The best practices are adopted from publicly available utility wildfire mitigation plans from the United States and Canada, recent findings from wildfire risk reduction research, and industry engagement.
