Modification and Development of a Control Mechanism for the Scanning Microwave Limb Sounder

The scanning microwave limb sounder (SMLS) is the latest instrument to probe the Earth's atmosphere to come out of the Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) team. Once deployed to the upper stratosphere, it will use microwave detection to measure geo-atmospheric variables such as temperature, pressure, and chemical composition. In addition to previous missions that used vertical limb scans to observe altitudinal variations, the SMLS will rotate laterally allowing it to establish two-dimensional variable dependencies with a single run. A program was originated by a previous intern that will automatically control the movement of the two rotational axes along with a switching mirror and chopper once the instrument is in flight. However, it lacked the code essential to control system's ability to function fully and reliably. By modifying and rewriting parts of the code I sought to have a finished ready-for-flight control system that would be easy to navigate. Three of the major alterations I made including instituting a gyroscope, implementing a restart button, and instigating the automatic creation of a file log with each run to record the position and orientation of the SMLS.

Algebraic geometric codes

The performance characteristics are discussed of certain algebraic geometric codes. Algebraic geometric codes have good minimum distance properties. On many channels they outperform other comparable block codes; therefore, one would expect them eventually to replace some of the block codes used in communications systems. It is suggested that it is unlikely that they will become useful substitutes for the Reed-Solomon codes used by the Deep Space Network in the near future. However, they may be applicable to systems where the signal to noise ratio is sufficiently high so that block codes would be more suitable than convolutional or concatenated codes.

A Probabilistic Approach to Technology Identification, Evaluation, and Selection for Affordable Transport Concepts

Most grant goals were accomplished over the course of the grant, albeit only partial success was achieved in applying ASDL s existing advanced design methods to HAVOC. The limited success in applying ASDL's advanced design methods occurred due to: fundamental 20 of 197 limitations in the RSM metamodeling process used; the highly computationally intensive nature of HAVOC as compared to many other advanced system synthesis and sizing codes; and the highly curved nature of low I(sub sp) rocket system spaces. These challenges encountered during the grant led to ongoing efforts in more efficient and robust sequential metamodeling/surrogate optimization based advanced design methods which are expected to overcome all of the challenges encountered with RSM during the grant. Other achievements over the course of the grant included the documentation of the existing HAVOC cost module and formulation of new cost estimation relationships in support of APS analysis of 3rd Gen RLV. Further achievements beyond the scope of the grant as originally defined were also achieved such as HAVOC code and portability improvements, historical propulsion performance and reliability regression relationships, and new visualization routines to vacilitate visualization of HAVOC DOE case file results.

HAL/S-FC compiler system functional specification

Compiler organization is discussed, including overall compiler structure, internal data transfer, compiler development, and code optimization. The user, system, and SDL interfaces are described, along with compiler system requirements. Run-time software support package and restrictions and dependencies are also considered of the HAL/S-FC system.

Design criteria for noncoherent Gaussian channels with MFSK signaling and coding

This paper presents data and criteria to assess and guide the design of modems for coded noncoherent communication systems subject to practical system constraints of power, bandwidth, noise spectral density, coherence time, and number of orthogonal signals M. Three basic receiver types are analyzed for the noncoherent multifrequency-shift keying (MFSK) additive white Gaussian noise channel: hard decision, unquantized (optimum), and quantized (soft decision). Channel capacity and computational cutoff rate are computed for each type and presented as functions of the predetection signal-to-noise ratio and the number of orthogonal signals. This relates the channel constraints of power, bandwidth, coherence time, and noise power to the optimum choice of signal duration and signal number.

Voyager telecommunications - The broadcast from Jupiter

The means by which the data collected by the Voyager 1 mission to Jupiter were returned to earth are presented. Radio links between the earth and the spacecraft are used for the transmission of both imaging and nonimaging telemetry from the spacecraft and commands from the earth and for radiometric observations of the spacecraft and its environment. Features which have lead to vast improvements in the capability of the Voyager telecommunications system over that of previous space probes include the use of X-band rather than S-band telemetry, a dual power X-band traveling wave tube amplifier, a 3.7 m spacecraft antenna and a single channel telemetry system with concatenated coding. Communications equipment at the three ground complexes of the Deep Space Network for telemetry reception includes 64 m steerable antennas, cryogenic maser preamplifiers and a phase-lock loop receiver. Voyager 1 has met or exceeded all of its telecommunications requirements, providing a 98% data return and a total of 2 x 10 to the 11th data bits during the Jupiter encounter.

Microprocessor control for phase-lock receiver

Subsystem facilities flexible data acquisition by combining hardware and software processing. Device controls complex signal acquisition sequence and assists in precise phase locking to received signal. Key features include software system and code-generator initialization routines, executive routine, utility subroutines, control sequence routines for each receiver acquisition state, control-command decoding routine, and look-up tables for code-generator configuration versus code-set number. Steps can be added to extend input signal dynamic range.

Computer assisted performance tests of the Lyman Alpha Coronagraph

Preflight calibration and performance tests of the Lyman Alpha Coronagraph rocket instrument in the laboratory, with the experiment in its flight configuration and illumination levels near those expected during flight were successfully carried out using a pulse code modulation telemetry system simulator interfaced in real time to a PDP 11/10 computer system. Post acquisition data reduction programs developed and implemented on the same computer system aided in the interpretation of test and calibration data.

Implementing the UCSD PASCAL system on the MODCOMP computer

The implementation of an interactive software development system (UCSD PASCAL) on the MODCOMP computer is discussed. The development of an interpreter for the MODCOMP II and the MODCOMP IV computers, written in MODCOMP II assembly language, is described. The complete Pascal programming system was run successfully on a MODCOMP II and MODCOMP IV under both the MAX II/III and MAX IV operating systems. The source code for an 8080 microcomputer version of the interpreter was used as the design for the MODCOMP interpreter. A mapping of the functions within the 8080 interpreter into MODCOMP II assembly language was the method used to code the interpreter.

Potentials on large spacecraft in LEO

A system-oriented computer code is used to predict surface charging due to voltages generated within a satellite operating in the typical dense plasma environment of LEO. The use of this code is demonstrated by predicting the expansion of electric fields onto a kapton surface from a pinhole over a biased conductor in a LEO environment. The results are compared to a more-exact solution and experimental data.
