Heating of the moon by heterogeneous accretion

Monte Carlo models of lunar accretion are developed by randomly sampling mass and velocity distributions of objects in the solar nebula in circumsolar and circumterrestrial orbits. The thermal effect of an impact is expressed as the volume of melt produced; the melt volumes produced by each Monte Carlo case are sorted into regions to produce percentage melt estimates as a function of radius. One-hundred cases are calculated to obtain a range of plausible thermal histories for lunar accretion. The average melt percentage estimates show substantial deep melting, but the spread of melt percentage values about the mean from the random sampling procedure is wide enough to include 0% melting for radii below 100 km and 100% melting for radii below 500 km.

Determination of the total grain size distribution in a vulcanian eruption column, and its implications to stratospheric aerosol perturbation

The total grain distribution of tephra from the eruption by the Fuego volcano in Guatemala on Oct. 14, 1974 was determined by grain size analysis. The region within each isopach has a grain distribution which was weighted proportionally to its percentage volume; the total distribution had a median grain size of 0.6 mm and a sorting coefficient of 2.3. The ash composed of fine particles did not fall in the volcano area as part of the recognizable tephra blanket; the eruption column reached well into the stratosphere to the height of 10-12 km above sea level, with mass flux rate estimated altitudes of 18-23 km

A computer graphics display technique for the examination of aircraft design data

An interactive computer graphics technique has been developed for quickly sorting and interpreting large amounts of aerodynamic data. It utilizes a graphic representation rather than numbers. The geometry package represents the vehicle as a set of panels. These panels are ordered in groups of ascending values (e.g., equilibrium temperatures). The groups are then displayed successively on a CRT building up to the complete vehicle. A zoom feature allows for displaying only the panels with values between certain limits. The addition of color allows a one-time display thus eliminating the need for a display build up.

Mechanical aggregation of enstatite chondrites from an inhomogeneous debris cloud

Enstatite chondrites have oxygen isotope ratios closer to those of the earth and moon than other meteorites. Their minerals are chemically reduced; metal contains Si, and some Ca, Ti, Mg and Mn are incorporated in sulphides rather than silicates. Clinoenstatite and olivine are virtually Fe-free. Two types of clinoenstatite in the Indarch enstatite chondrite have been reported, one luminescing blue and one red. Similar clinoenstatites in the Kota-Kota enstatite chondrite are associated with two distinct types of forsteritic olivine, one luminescing orange and the other blue. The textural relations and differences in chemical composition cannot be explained by progressive condensation from the solar nebula and require the mechanical mixing of material from at least two sources. It is suggested here that enstatite chondrites result from mechanical and chemical processes during aerodynamic sorting and gravitational settling of debris from a hot cloud of dust, liquid and gas produced during collision of planetesimals.

The X-ray spectrum of a hot interstellar plasma

The soft X-ray spectrum of a hot, low density, optically thin plasma in collisional ionization equilibrium is calculated using current atomic data. Many Fe collision strengths differ from previous calculations. The spectra from individual elements are presented for use in abundance determinations from X-ray observations. Collision strengths and line energies, sorted both according to energy and according to ion, are tabulated.

Raman scattering in the Jovian atmosphere

On December 8 and 9, 1976, the 1024 channel Reticon silicon photodiode array detector in the coude spectrograph of a 2.7 m telescope was used to obtain spectra of Jupiter and the moon. Three separate data sets were obtained, including one of the Jovian equatorial region, one of the Jovian north polar cap, and one of Mare Serenetatis on the moon. A correlation analysis was conducted. The autocorrelation function of the Jovian spectrum was calculated and the autocorrelation function of the lunar spectrum was subtracted from it. The analysis made it possible to detect Raman scattering by H2 in the atmosphere of Jupiter. The pure rotational H2 S(0) and S(1) lines were detected. The ratio of the relative number of Raman scattered photons in the S(0) and S(1) features indicate that the H2 in the Jovian atmosphere is in the equilibrium, rather than the normal state. Therefore some sort of nonradiative process is responsible for transitions between the ortho and para states of H2.

Radiation losses in resonant tubes

The role of radiation losses in a resonant tube - the transfer of sound energy from the test gas through the confines of the tube to the ambient atmosphere - is investigated both theoretically and experimentally. It is concluded that losses of this sort make no noticeable contribution to the background losses, even at high gas pressures. Nevertheless, if an axial resonant frequency of the test gas closely matches a longitudinal resonant frequency of the tube wall, the internal sound pressure can excite tube displacements of disproportionate magnitude and thus cause excessive losses, not due to radiation but rather to frictional dissipation related to the motion of the tube structure. This mechanism is effective when the mode numbers of the gas and tube have opposite parity, and makes sound absorption measurements at the fundamental gas frequency particularly problematical. An experimental investigation confirms the existence of such additional losses when the parity condition is fulfilled.

Ion Mass/Velocity/Charge Spectrometer

Ion spectrometer distributes ions two-dimensionally and measures three characteristics of incident-ion beam: (1) mass/charge distribution, (2) ion velocity distribution, and (3) direction of incidence. Also useful for diagnosis in experimental plasma physics in collisionless regime. Ion spectrometer uses novel combination of standard electrostatic and magnetic deflection techniques to sort incident ions according to speed, diretion of incidence, and mass/ charge ratio.

Space power subsystem automation technology

The technology issues involved in power subsystem automation and the reasonable objectives to be sought in such a program were discussed. The complexities, uncertainties, and alternatives of power subsystem automation, along with the advantages from both an economic and a technological perspective were considered. Whereas most spacecraft power subsystems now use certain automated functions, the idea of complete autonomy for long periods of time is almost inconceivable. Thus, it seems prudent that the technology program for power subsystem automation be based upon a growth scenario which should provide a structured framework of deliberate steps to enable the evolution of space power subsystems from the current practice of limited autonomy to a greater use of automation with each step being justified on a cost/benefit basis. Each accomplishment should move toward the objectives of decreased requirement for ground control, increased system reliability through onboard management, and ultimately lower energy cost through longer life systems that require fewer resources to operate and maintain. This approach seems well-suited to the evolution of more sophisticated algorithms and eventually perhaps even the use of some sort of artificial intelligence. Multi-hundred kilowatt systems of the future will probably require an advanced level of autonomy if they are to be affordable and manageable.

Optical conductivity of alpha-Mn

The optical constants were measured at room temperature in the photon-energy range 0.6 to 6.5 eV on evaporated thin films. Evaporation conditions were chosen that gave the alpha-Mn crystal structure with reasonably large grains. The optical conductivity was separated into intraband and interband contributions by fitting to the Drude formula at low energies. The results are anomalous in comparison to other 3d transition metals. The free-electron lifetime is exceptionally sort (in agreement with the large dc resistivity of Mn), and the interband transitions seem unusually weak at the lower energies. Possible explanations related to the complicated crystal structure of alpha-Mn are discussed.

A discussion of image sharpness

The image sharpness problem is discussed in terms of a scene which is viewed by a sensor. The sensor has some sort of function which is a nonpoint observing function, and it's a function that gathers energy from some region around a point in the scene. That energy is integrated and is contributed to each point or each sample that is taken of the scene. The samples become the pixels, and the pixels are assembled together into the digital image. Each one has some blurr or some of what is called the point's spread function creating the value of information or data that is seen in each pixel. Then the sensor and electronic part of the system acts on that signal out of the sensor and perhaps adds more blurring, more loss of resolution to the system. Finally, sampling and quantization of the data produce their effects. The signal is sampled at some rate and the digital image is created from that. The sampling or digitizing process puts the continuous voltage into a number of discrete binary levels, and another error is introduced there.

Computation of subsonic flow around airfoil systems with multiple separation

A numerical method for computing the subsonic flow around multi-element airfoil systems was developed, allowing for flow separation at one or more elements. Besides multiple rear separation also sort bubbles on the upper surface and cove bubbles can approximately be taken into account. Also, compressibility effects for pure subsonic flow are approximately accounted for. After presentation the method is applied to several examples and improved in some details. Finally, the present limitations and desirable extensions are discussed.

Evaluation of an electro-optic remote displacement measuring system

An instrumentation system to provide a noncontact method for measurement of target positions was evaluated. The system employs two electro-optic camera units which give stereo information for use in determining three dimensional target locations. Specially developed, infrared sensitive photodetectors are used in the cameras to sense radiation from light emitting diode targets. Up to 30 of these targets can be monitored with a sampling rate of 312 Hz per target. An important part of the system is a minicomputer which is used to collect the camera data, sort it, make corrections for distortions in the electro-optic system, and perform the necesssary coordinate transformations. If target motions are restricted to locations in a plane which is perpendicular to a camera's optical axis, the system can be used with just one camera. Calibrations performed in this mode characterize accuracies in single camera operation. This information is also useful in determination of single camera contributions to total system errors. For this reason the system was tested in both the single camera and two camera (stereo) modes of operation.

Internal breakdown of charged spacecraft dielectrics

It is suggested that small energy discharges of low differential voltage that are associated with internal buried charge may be an important mechanism by which sorted electrostatic energy is released from dielectrics on board orbiting spacecraft. The evidence from space given by Stevens (1980) is noted, and the laboratory experimental evidence of Frederickson is cited to demonstrate that discharges occur under circumstances with no external potential drop. Previous calculations indicating that significant internal electric fields can exist in dielectrics charged with multiple-kilovolt electron beams under conditions involving little or no external potential drop are reviewed. Attention is given to the internal discharge mechanism of Meulenberg (1976), and new calculations suggesting that the space environment is conducive to the formation of the conditions required by this mechanism are presented. Experimental procedures for checking the suggestions made are developed.
