Nonlocal Metasurface with Resonance-Selective Nonlinear Wavefront Shaping

We demonstrate a nonlinear nonlocal metasurface supporting quasi-trapped modes that enable helicity-dependent wavefront shaping at third-harmonic wavelengths. The geometric phase is selectively modified near resonance, revealing a mechanism for polarization-dependent nonlinear phase control.

Spectral and temporal shaping of spectrally incoherent pulses in the infrared and ultraviolet

Laser–plasma instabilities (LPIs) hinder the interaction of high-energy laser pulses with targets. Simulations show that broadband spectrally incoherent pulses can mitigate these instabilities. Optimizing laser operation and target interaction requires controlling the properties of these optical pulses. We demonstrate closed-loop control of the spectral density and pulse shape of nanosecond spectrally incoherent pulses after optical parametric amplification in the infrared (∼1053 nm) and sum–frequency generation to the ultraviolet (∼351 nm) using spectral and temporal modulation in the fiber front end. The high versatility of the demonstrated approaches can support the generation of high-energy, spectrally incoherent pulses by future laser facilities for improved LPI mitigation.

Broadband spectral combining of three pulse-shaped fiber amplifiers with 42fs compressed pulse duration

We demonstrate ultra-broadband spectral combining of ultrashort pulses from Yb-doped fiber amplifiers, with coherently spectrally synthesized pulse shaping, to achieve tens-of-fs pulses. This method can fully compensate for gain narrowing and high order dispersion over broad bandwidth. We produce 42fs pulses by spectrally synthesizing three chirped-pulse fiber amplifiers and two programmable pulse shapers across an 80nm overall bandwidth. To the best of our knowledge, this is the shortest pulse duration achieved from a spectrally combined fiber system at one-micron wavelength. This work provides a path toward high-energy, tens-of-fs fiber chirped-pulse amplification systems.

Demonstration of a tandem lens for producing shaped laser-ionized plasmas for plasma wakefield acceleration

We demonstrate a tandem lens optical setup, comprising two diffractive optics, that focuses a high-power ultrafast laser with a shaped on-axis intensity profile, producing a meter-long Bessel focus. The intended use of the optical setup is to produce a laser-ionized plasma source for plasma wakefield acceleration. By controlling the on-axis intensity, the density profile of the plasma ramps at the entrance and exit of the plasma can be tailored to optimize the matching of the electron beam into the plasma. In addition to demonstrating the optical system, we describe the algorithm used to calculate the lens phases and present detailed calculations of the lenses’ expected performance.

Novel spectral-shaping building block: a narrowband Mach–Zehnder interferometer

We present an experimental demonstration of notch filters with arbitrary center wavelengths capable of tunable analog output power values varying between full extinction of 15 and 0 dB. Each filter is composed of highly modular apodized four-port Bragg add/drop filters to reduce the crosstalk between concatenated devices. The constructed photonic integrated circuit experimentally demonstrates spectra shaping using four independent notch filters. Each notch filter supports a bandwidth of ∼ 2 nm and is shown to be suitable for realization of programmable photonic integrated circuits.

Ultrafast snapshots of terahertz electric potentials across ring-shaped quantum barriers

Probing the time evolution of the terahertz electric field within subwavelength dimensions plays a crucial role in observing the nanoscale lightwave interactions with fundamental excitations in condensed-matter systems and in artificial structures, such as metamaterials. Here, we propose a novel probing method for measuring terahertz electric potentials across nanogaps using a combination of optical and terahertz pulse excitations. To achieve this, we employ ring-shaped nanogaps that enclose a metallic island, allowing us to capture tunneling charges when subjected to terahertz electromagnetic pulse illumination. By controlling and manipulating the terahertz tunneling charges through a focused optical gate pulse, we can obtain the terahertz potential strength as a function of spatial coordinates and time delays between pulses. To accurately quantify the time evolution of terahertz electric potential across quantum barriers, we carefully calibrate the recorded nonlinear tunneling current. Its on-resonance and off-resonance behaviors are also discussed, providing valuable insights into the antenna’s characteristics and performance.

DEM simulation of the compression of crushable sand: does the initial particle shape matter?

Advances in DEM modeling, combined with high-resolution X-ray tomography, opened the way for computer models based on virtual replicas of the particles which preserve nearly all facets of their geometry. This leads to simulation advantages, but also high computational costs. Here we tackle a question stemming from this trend: how accurate should particle models be to ensure accuracy? We address this question for the case of the compression of crushable sand. LS-DEM was used to generate three models of Ottawa sand (exact replicas, ellipsoids, and spheres) from digital images of its grains. Compression-induced crushing was simulated for all sets by tracking evolving size and shape distribution. The results confirm that exact replicas provide the closest match of the measurements. However, intermediate degrees of rendering (e.g. ellipsoids preserving volume and aspect ratio of the real grains) led to satisfactory results only marginally different from those of exact replicas. In conclusion, these findings provide an example of the protocols that may be followed to identify the optimal degree of particle approximation which should be regarded as mandatory to achieve a conscious, sustainable use of computational resources.

Octet scalars shaping LHC distributions in 4-jet final states

We study properties of a hypothetical scalar particle, Θ, which is a color octet and an electroweak singlet. At hadron colliders, Θ is pair produced through its QCD coupling to gluons, so that its mass determines the cross section. It decays at tree level into $q\bar{q}$ through dimension-5 operators, and at one loop into gluons. Thus, the main LHC signature of Θ is a pair of dijets of equal invariant mass. The CMS search in this channel shows a 3.6σ excess over the QCD background for a dijet mass M jj ≈ 0.95 TeV, which can be due to Θ : its production cross section (65 fb for a real scalar) and the acceptance of the CMS event selection applied to pp → ΘΘ → ($q\bar{q}$) ($q\bar{q}$) yield a rate consistent with the excess. Furthermore, the shape of the dσ/dM jj signal is in agreement with the CMS result. Given the data-driven background fit performed by CMS, we find that a complex scalar (whose production rate is twice as large) fits better the data than a real scalar. Besides the pair of dijets, testable LHC signals include a trijet-dijet topology, a $t\bar{t}$ pair plus a dijet resonance, as well as final states involving a Higgs, W or Z boson plus jets.

Hypothesis Tests on Rayleigh Wave Radiation Pattern Shapes: A Theoretical Assessment for Source Screening (Independent Review: LANL Source Physics LCP) [Slides]

Background for TRL 0-1 Research: we require a simple regional source discriminant that has a predictive capability and a quantifiable screening performance (probability of correct attribution); Challenge: many local and near-regional source discriminants do not test source mechanism; rather, they test depth. Such empirically validated discriminants are not all theoretically justified; and, Proposal: we test Rayleigh wave radiation patterns for any significant deviation from circular shape as a discriminant.

Concurrent Shape and Topology Optimization

The typical topology optimization workflow uses a design domain that does not change during the optimization process. Consequently, features of the design domain, such as the location of loads and constraints, must be determined in advance and are not optimizable. A method is proposed herein that allows the design domain to be optimized along with the topology. This approach uses topology and shape derivatives to guide nested optimizers to the optimal topology and design domain. The details of the method are discussed, and examples are provided that demonstrate the utility of this approach.

End-Use Savings Shapes: Measure Documentation: Add Exhaust Air Heat/Energy Recovery

This documentation focuses on a single end-use savings shape measure—Add Exhaust Air Heat/Energy Recovery. This measure adds exhaust air energy recovery or heat recovery to existing air handling units (AHU) with outdoor air. Systems that already have energy/heat recovery are not modified. Furthermore, food service building types are also not modified by this measure due to the added complication of integrating cooking hood exhaust that could cause heat exchanger fouling from kitchen exhaust. In total, this measure is applicable airloops serving ~70% of the floor area in ComStock. In practice, energy/heat recovery systems are retrofitted to existing air delivery systems either as separate systems that provide outdoor air to the AHUs or are directly integrated to an AHU; the modeling approach used in this study is agnostic of the energy recovery type and simply accounts recovery effectiveness, added static pressure, and other controls which are described further in this document. Energy recovery with sensible and latent exchange gets added in humid climate zones, while heat recovery with sensible-only exchange gets added in drier climate zones. Energy recovery is modeled as a fixed membrane plate counterflow heat exchanger, while heat recovery is modeled as a sensible-only fixed aluminum plate counterflow heat exchanger. Both systems include a bypass (for temperature control and economizer lockout) and electric resistance preheat coil for frost prevention.

End-Use Savings Shapes Measure Documentation: Demand Control Ventilation

This documentation focuses on a single end-use savings shape measure - Demand Control Ventilation (DCV). DCV can save energy by reducing the rate at which outdoor air (OA) is delivered during periods of less-than-design occupancy. This measure will enable DCV for air loops using applicable HVAC system types (all except dedicated outdoor air systems [DOAS], packaged systems, or that have an energy recovery ventilator [ERV]) and serving applicable space types (all except kitchens, dining areas, patient spaces, mechanical rooms, stairwells and corridors, or high exhaust space types) using model occupancy schedules to control the DCV. The measure is applicable to 72.7% of the stock floor area. As office buildings outside of California in ComStock are modeled using a single, whole-building space type, DCV is not applied to these building types. The DCV measure demonstrates 2.6% total site energy savings (119 trillion British thermal units [TBtu]) for the U.S. commercial building stock modeled in ComStock.

Dynamic Beam Shape Sensing and Control in an Open Architecture Metal AM System for Microstructure Manipulation

Most commercially available metal additive manufacturing (AM) systems are closed-architecture, meaning that the system manufacturer limits the ability of the user to directly control the process conditions and can modify the specified inputs using proprietary methods. Unfortunately, this approach severely limits or confounds the ability for users to perform research on fundamental aspects of additive manufacturing. ARCTOS Technology Solutions (ARCTOS) produces an open-architecture laser powder bed fusion (PBF) additive manufacturing system that allows the user to fully control all aspects of the process control and monitoring. The purpose of this project is to help develop beam shaping capabilities and controls within the ARCTOS open-architecture system for control of microstructure evolution during metal AM.

End-Use Savings Shapes Measure Documentation: Heat Pump Rooftop Units With Exhaust Air Energy Recovery

This technical report documents the Advanced Rooftop Unit Control End Use Savings Shapes (EUSS) measure, including providing a description of the technology, modeling methods, and the energy savings calculated from applying the measure to applicable across the US commercial building stock using ComStock to quantify its potential. This measure replaces gas furnace and electric resistance rooftop units with high-efficiency variable speed heat pump rooftop units (HP-RTU) that include exhaust air heat or energy recovery. The measure uses the same assumptions and technology as the variable speed HP-RTU measure from EUSS 2023 release 1 but adds energy recovery to precondition outdoor ventilation air to reduce HVAC loads. The HP-RTU compressor lockout temperature is modeled as 0 degrees Fahrenheit; below this temperature, the heat pump is set to shut off. The unit is sized based on the design cooling loads, with backup electric resistance heating addressing any remaining loads including heating hours below the compressor lockout temperature when there is no heat pump heating.

End-Use Savings Shapes Measure Documentation: Electric Cooking Equipment

Building on the successfully completed effort to calibrate and validate the U.S. Department of Energy’s ResStock™ and ComStock™ models over the past three years, the objective of this work is to produce national datasets that empower analysts working for federal, state, utility, city, and manufacturer stakeholders to answer a broad range of analysis questions. The goal of this work is to develop energy efficiency, electrification, and demand flexibility end-use load shapes (electricity, gas, propane, or fuel oil) that cover most of the high-impact, market-ready (or nearly market-ready) measures. “Measures” refers to energy efficiency variables that can be applied to buildings during modeling.
