Vibrational and rotational relaxation in mixtures of water vapor and oxygen

Experimental measurements of sound absorption in air, measurements of ultrasonic absorption in H2O/O2 mixtures at 500 K, and experimental measurements in mixtures of H2O with other impurities have been analyzed to determine the energy transfer rates in mixtures of O2 and H2O as a function of temperature. A set of energy transfer rate coefficients was found that give results consistent with all the experimental data examined and with vibrational energy transfer theory. The rotational relaxation time for H2O/O2 mixtures was determined from the 500 K ultrasonic measurements.

The multigrid method: Fast relaxation

A multi-level grid method was studied as a possible means of accelerating convergence in relaxation calculations for transonic flows. The method employs a hierarchy of grids, ranging from very coarse (e.g. 4 x 2 mesh cells) to fine (e.g. 64 x 32); the coarser grids are used to diminish the magnitude of the smooth part of the residuals, hopefully with far less total work than would be required with optimal iterations on the finest grid. To date the method was applied quite successfully to the solution of the transonic small-disturbance equation for the velocity potential in conservation form. Nonlifting transonic flow past a parabolic arc airfoil is the example studied, with meshes of both constant and variable step size.

Updating prediction models by dynamical relaxation - An examination of the technique

A dynamical relaxation technique for updating prediction models is analyzed with the help of the linear and nonlinear barotropic primitive equations. It is assumed that a complete four-dimensional time history of some prescribed subset of the meteorological variables is known. The rate of adaptation of the flow variables toward the true state is determined for a linearized f-model, and for mid-latitude and equatorial beta-plane models. The results of the analysis are corroborated by numerical experiments with the nonlinear shallow-water equations.

Low-temperature rotational relaxation in gaseous H2 and D2

Various potentials have been used for generating scattering cross sections for rotational transitions in hydrogen isotope systems. Low-temperature rates were calculated and the relaxation times compared with the results of sound absorption experiments. It is seen that the existing potentials could still be improved since they do not exactly reproduce the experimental results.

Single particle aerodynamic relaxation time analyzer

An instrument employing a laser Doppler velocimeter and a microphone to measure the phase lag of the motion of aerosol particulates relative to the motion of the fluid medium within an acoustic field is described. The relaxation times and aerodynamic diameters of the particles or droplets are determined in real time from the measured values of phase lag; thus, the size analysis is independent of the electrostatic charges and refractive indices of the particulates. The instrument is suitable for analyzing the aerodynamic size spectrum of atmospheric particulate pollutants with aerodynamic diameters ranging from 0.1 to 10.0 microns.

Monte Carlo solution of Boltzmann equation for a simple model of highly nonequilibrium diatomic gases: Translational rotational energy relaxation

The semiclassical transition probability was incorporated in the simulation for energy exchange between rotational and translational energy. The results provide details on the fundamental mechanisms of gas kinetics where analytical methods were impractical. The validity of the local Maxwellian assumption and relaxation time, rotational-translational energy transition, and a velocity analysis of the inelastic collision were discussed in detail.

Sonic-boom minimization with nose-bluntness relaxation

A procedure which provides sonic-boom-minimizing equivalent area distributions for supersonic cruise conditions is described. This work extends previous analyses to permit relaxation of the extreme bluntness required by conventional low-boom shapes and includes propagation in a real atmosphere. The procedure provides area distributions which minimize either shock strength or overpressure.

Closure of a kinetic model of plasma in strong turbulence by relaxation

A Fokker-Planck kinetic equation for a turbulent plasma is derived by a repeated cascade decomposition. Calculation of the propagator and the kinetic equation determine the transport coefficients (diffusivity and turbulent viscosity) by means of a closure based on a relaxation procedure governing the approach to equilibrium. The k to the minus third power spectral law is obtained, which governs the coupling between the velocity and the electrostatic field fluctuations.

Parameterization of the thermal relaxation rate in the stratosphere

The thermal relaxation rate of large vertical scale disturbances in the stratosphere is parameterized in terms of the Newtonian cooling rate, the heating rate, and a transmission function that represents opacity effects. The parameterization is based on Strobel's photochemical model for ozone (1978).

Thermal structure and relaxation rates of the perturbed atmosphere - A study with a photochemical radiative convective model

A radiative-photochemical model is developed to evaluate the temperature distribution in the earth's atmosphere between the ground and 70 km. The model takes into account the interaction between photochemistry and temperature. Results are reported for a number of experiments performed with this model to assess the climatic effects of varying the ozone distribution and the ozone overburden. An evaluation of the relaxation rates of both ozone and temperature is also reported. In particular, the importance of the ozone distribution with respect to the greenhouse effect is further investigated.

Simulator study of stall/post-stall characteristics of a fighter airplane with relaxed longitudinal static stability

A real-time piloted simulation was conducted to evaluate the high-angle-of-attack characteristics of a fighter configuration based on wind-tunnel testing of the F-16, with particular emphasis on the effects of various levels of relaxed longitudinal static stability. The aerodynamic data used in the simulation was conducted on the Langley differential maneuvering simulator, and the evaluation involved representative low-speed combat maneuvering. Results of the investigation show that the airplane with the basic control system was resistant to the classical yaw departure; however, it was susceptible to pitch departures induced by inertia coupling during rapid, large-amplitude rolls at low airspeed. The airplane also exhibited a deep-stall trim which could be flown into and from which it was difficult to recover. Control-system modifications were developed which greatly decreased the airplane susceptibility to the inertia-coupling departure and which provided a reliable means for recovering from the deep stall.

Solution of Boltzmann equation for highly nonequilibrium diatomic gases rotational translational energy relaxation

The direct simulation Monte Carlo method is applied to solve the Boltzmann equation for collisions between internally excited diatomic gases in highly nonequilibrium states. The semiclassical transition probability is incorporated in the simulation for energy exchange between rotational and translational energy. The results provide details on the fundamental mechanisms of gas kinetics where analytical methods are impractical. The validity of the local Maxwellian assumption and relaxation time, rotational-translational energy transition, and a velocity analysis of the inelastic collision are discussed in detail.

Economic evaluation of flying-qualities design criteria for a transport configured with relaxed static stability

Direct constrained parameter optimization was used to optimally size a medium range transport for minimum direct operating cost. Several stability and control constraints were varied to study the sensitivity of the configuration to specifying the unaugmented flying qualities of transports designed to take maximum advantage of relaxed static stability augmentation systems. Additionally, a number of handling qualities related design constants were studied with respect to their impact on the design.

A preliminary study of relaxation methods for the inviscid conservative gasdynamics equations using flux splitting

Plus minus flux vector split schemes are combined with the multigrid relaxation method to obtain fast rates of iterative (or steady state) convergence. On model nonlifting biconvex airfoil flow, steady state convergence is obtained using multigrid in 40 iteractions for subsonic cases and in 120 iterations for transonic cases. A 65 x 33 stretched grid is used. However, the multigrid scheme used here (and there are numerous variations) sometimes could not be made to work for transonic cases with a large number of supersonic points. Moreover, the multigrid method is only several times faster than the conventional algorithm which itself could perhaps be accelerated by other means. Nethertheless, with proper adjustment the multigrid method will ultimately lead to very fast rates of iterative convergence.

General relaxation schemes in multigrid algorithms for higher order singularity methods

Relaxation schemes based on approximate and incomplete factorization technique (AF) are described. The AF schemes allow construction of a fast multigrid method for solving integral equations of the second and first kind. The smoothing factors for integral equations of the first kind, and comparison with similar results from the second kind of equations are a novel item. Application of the MD algorithm shows convergence to the level of truncation error of a second order accurate panel method.

Interpretation of postseismic deformation with a viscoelastic relaxation model

A viscoelastic relaxation model is used to interpret postseismic surface deformation for the large-magnitude Aleutian earthquakes of 1957 and 1965. The lithosphere and asthenosphere are modeled as elastic solids with an anomalous viscoelastic inclusion below the island arc volcanoes. It is found that the observed postseismic surface deformation is a corollary of the known island arc structure. A satisfactory fit to the uplift following the 1957 earthquake is found for a viscoelastic volume with 80-km width extending from a depth of 50 to 200 km.

Long-time stress relaxation of a filled elastomer in vacuum environments

Samples of a filled elastomeric ablative material were stored at 45 C and 10 to the -6th torr for 7 months. Their tensile stress-relaxation modulus at constant strain was measured throughout the 7 months. Results of the testing are discussed primarily by comparisons of the data to atmospheric-pressure moduli (determined in this work for shorter periods of time) and with moduli predicted from short-time testing. Confirmation of the strengthening effects of vacuum on this composite was obtained. The use of time-temperature superposition techniques as an approximate accelerated testing procedure for this material under these conditions was also verified.
