Cooling considerations for design of a radial inflow turbine

A numerical study to determine the temperature distribution in the rotor of a radial inflow turbine is presented. Internal cooling passages are modeled in the present formulation in order to carry out solid and coolant temperature computations simultaneously resulting in a considerable computer time savings. The stresses due to centrifugal and thermal loadings are determined in an actual rotor and the effect of cooling design on its mechanical integrity is discussed.

Computation of the temperature distribution in cooled radial inflow turbine guide vanes

A two-dimensional finite-difference numerical technique is presented to determine the temperature distribution of an internally-cooled blade of radial turbine guide vanes. A simple convection cooling is assumed inside the guide vane. Such an arrangement results in relatively small cooling effectiveness at the leading edge and at the trailing edge. Heat transfer augmentation in these critical areas may be achieved by using impingement jets and film cooling. A computer program is written in Fortran IV for IBM 370/165 computer.

Spectroscopic studies of O-type stars. VIII - Radial velocities and the K-term

Radial velocities are measured on coude spectrograms of over 200 O-type stars in both hemispheres. The selection of effective wavelengths for the stellar lines to be measured is reviewed, and the measured velocities are compared with those available in a catalog of O stars. The Trumpler (1935) effect (a reported anomalous redshift in certain O stars) is inconclusively reinvestigated, atmospheric motions in Of stars are examined, and some kinematic properties of O stars are discussed statistically. It is found that 58% of all O stars and 41% of all the Of stars considered are certain or probable binaries. A K-term in the range from 1 to 2 km/s is derived for the O stars, but the Of stars are shown to have a highly significant negative K-term. It is suggested that the systematically negative peculiar velocities of the Of stars are due to outflow of material beginning at the photospheric level.

Radial variation of lunar crater rim topography

The paper presents results of determinations of variations of rim topography as a function of range from the crater rim for a group of morphologically fresh craters. It is found that the rate at which exterior crater topography converges with the surrounding surface is highly variable among different radial directions at individual craters as well as between different craters, and that at several craters, oblique impact appears to have contributed to azimuthal elevation/range variations.

Optimization of confinement in a toroidal plasma subject to strong radial electric fields

The toroidal ring of plasma contained in the NASA Lewis Bumpy Torus facility may be biased to positive or negative potentials approaching 50 kV by applying dc voltages of the respective polarity to 12 or fewer midplane electrode rings. The radial electric fields, which are responsible for raising the ions to high energies by E x B/B-squared drift, then point out of or into the plasma. A preliminary report is given on the identification and optimization of independent variables which affect the ion density and confinement time in the Bumpy Torus plasma. The independent variables include the polarity, position, and number of the midplane electrode rings, the method of gas injection, and the polarity and strength of a weak vertical magnetic field. Some characteristic data taken under conditions where most of the independent variables were optimized are presented. The highest value of the electron number density on the plasma axis is 3.2 trillion per cu cm, the highest ion heating efficiency is 47%, and the longest particle containment time is 2.0 msec.

Analysis of radially cracked ring segments subject to forces and couples

Results of planar boundary collocation analysis are given for ring segment (C-shaped) specimens with radial cracks, subjected to combined forces and couples. Mode I stress intensity factors and crack mouth opening displacements were determined for ratios of outer to inner radius in the range 1.1 to 2.5 and ratios of crack length to segment width in the range 0.1 to 0.8.

The radial variation of corotating energetic particle streams in the inner and outer solar system

The radial gradient of long-lived, corotating energetic particle streams was measured using observations of .9-2.2 MeV protons from Helios 1 and 2, IMP 7, Pioneer 10 and Pioneer 11. A positive gradient of approximately 350% per AU is found between .3 AU and 1 AU. Between 1 AU and some 3-5 AU, the gradient is variable with an average value of 100% per AU which is consistent with earlier statistical results. A comparison between measurements at 9 AU and approximately 4 AU shows a negative gradient which is variable from -40 to -100% per AU. Possible solar latitudinal effects on these gradient studies are also discussed. Using solar wind and magnetic field data from Helios 1 between 1 AU and .3 AU, the relation between corotating energetic particle events in the inner solar system and the interplanetary medium is examined. It is found that the energetic particles are contained inside the high speed solar wind stream in a region adjacent to the interaction region between low speed and high speed streams.

Optimization study for high speed radial turbine with special reference to design variables

Numerical results of a theoretical investigation are presented to provide information about the effect of variation of the different design and operating parameters on radial inflow turbine performance. The effects of variations in the mass flow rate, rotor tip Mach number, inlet flow angles, number of rotor blades and hub to shroud radius ratio, on the internal fluid dynamics of turbine rotors, was investigated. A procedure to estimate the flow deviation angles at the turbine exit is also presented and used to examine the influence of the operating conditions and the rotor geometrical configuration on these deviations. The significance of the results obtained is discussed with respect to improved turbine performance.

Analysis of the cross flow in a radial inflow turbine scroll

Equations of motion were derived, and a computational procedure is presented, for determining the nonviscous flow characteristics in the cross-sectional planes of a curved channel due to continuous mass discharge or mass addition. An analysis was applied to the radial inflow turbine scroll to study the effects of scroll geometry and the through flow velocity profile on the flow behavior. The computed flow velocity component in the scroll cross-sectional plane, together with the through flow velocity profile which can be determined in a separate analysis, provide a complete description of the three dimensional flow in the scroll.

Radial bearing measurements of the 64-m antenna, DSS 14

The inspection fixtures and methods used to determine the extent of the aximuth radial bearing deformation at the 64 m DSS 14 are described. An annular separation developed between the circular steel runner and the grout, suggesting either failure of the grout or, as the case appears to be, stretching of the circular steel runner due to the formation of rust on the runner at the grout interface.

Cosmic ray measurements on board Helios 1 from December 1974 to September 1975 Quiet time spectra, radial gradients, and solar events

The considered time period is characterized by a general decrease in solar activity towards a minimum which occurred in July 1976. The relatively quiet solar conditions facilitate the separation of the gradually varying galactic cosmic radiation from superimposed events of different characteristics. The inspection of neutron monitor data shows that the period is characterized by a slow increase of the high energy galactic cosmic radiation at a relatively constant rate. Attention is given to the instrumentation employed, intensity time profiles and preliminary radial gradients, and quiet time energy spectra. The solar particle events discussed include the January 5, 1976 event, the March 3, 1975 event, and the March 19/20, 1975 event.

A contribution to ULF activity in the Pc 3-4 range correlated with IMF radial orientation

The paper describes an experiment to determine whether the radial orientation of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) is associated with ULF activity in the Pc 3-4 range. Data are obtained from base levels, undisturbed intervals, IMF and disturbance selection, and trigonometric correlation. The results obtained are discussed, noting particularly that for low Kp, the probability of enhanced amplitude noise rises as IMF orientation with respect to the nominal solar wind flow decreases in both Pc 3 and Pc 4 channels.

Radial dependence of solar wind properties deduced from Helios 1/2 and Pioneer 10/11 radio scattering observations

Radio scattering measurements at 2.3 GHz, conducted over the heliocentric distance range of 1.7 to 180 solar radii, provide data for a study of the radial dependence of the solar wind characteristics. The data are obtained from the Helios 1 and 2 and the Pioneer 10 and 11 spacecraft. Spectral broadening measurements, together with angular broadening data for the spacecraft signal, indicate a value of 24 km/sec for the solar wind velocity at 1.7 solar radii. A velocity profile of the solar wind in the acceleration range is developed. In addition, phase scintillation measurements obtained suggest that the solar wind is slightly converging in the equatorial region between approximately 20 and 180 solar radii.

Stress analysis study in cooled radial inflow turbine

With increased turbine inlet temperatures, numerical methods of thermal and stress analysis are becoming more valuable in the design of air-cooled turbines. This paper presents a study of the stresses associated with different cooling patterns in a radial inflow turbine rotor. The finite element method is used in the stress calculations taking into consideration centrifugal, thermal and aerodynamic loading. The effects of temperature distribution and the presence of internal cooling passages are discussed.
