High-T(sub c) Superconductor-Normal-Superconductor Junctions with Polyimide-Passivated Ambient Temperature Edge Formation

The ability to controllably fabricate High-Temperature Superconductor (HTS) S-Normal-S (SNS) Josephson Juntions (JJ's) enhances the possibilities fro many applications, including digital circuits, SQUID's, and mixers. A wide variety of approaches to fabricating SNS-like junctions has been tried and analyzed in terms of proximity effect behavior.

High-Performance Polyimide Powder Coatings

Researchers at NASA's Kennedy Space Center have developed advanced powder coatings for longer-lasting, improved corrosion control. The results of preliminary tests of the coatings and their resistance to salt spray corrosion are very encouraging, and commercial partners are sought for further development.

Thermally Conductive Melt-Processable Polyimide HBN Micro-Composites for High Temperature Electrical Insulation Applications

Thermoplastic polymers exhibit excellent dielectric properties and manufacturing robustness. These properties mark thermoplastics as competitive material candidates for electrical insulation applications. However, the high-temperature performance of most thermoplastics is insufficient to meet the electrical wiring requirements for next-generation air and space transportation engineering designs, with continuous operation temperature requirements of up to 200 °C among other design requirements. Furthermore, the low thermal conductivity (κ) of polymers as a material class leads to heat trapping within wires which can amplify thermal stresses. As a result, there is a need to investigate candidate thermoplastic systems for their high temperature, dielectric, and κ performance.

Simple test indicates degree of cure of polyimide coatings

Qualitative test involves immersing a coated cable in methyl-2-pyrrolidone and removing it in one to three minutes. Evidence of any cracking, peeling, or other defects that shows under 20-power magnification indicates that the coating has not been completely cured.

Polyimide polymers provide improved ablative materials

Principle heat absorption of silica-reinforced plastic ablative materials occurs from the in-depth reaction of silica with carbon to form silicon monoxide and carbon monoxide. The higher the degree of completion of this reaction, the higher the capacity of the ablative material to absorb heat.

Thermally stable polyimides from solutions of monomeric reactants

A method for preparing thermally stable resin-fiber-reinforced composites by using solutions of appropriate monomers is described. Solutions containing a dimethyl ester of an aryl tetracarboxylic acid, the monomethyl ester of nadic acid, and an aryl diamine were used to impregnate graphite fibers. Composites fabricated from these prepregs exhibited excellent thermo-oxidative stability and retention of mechanical properties at 315 C (600 F). These results compare favorably to those obtained from composites made from amide-acid prepolymers capped with reactive alicyclic rings. Monomeric solutions provide excellent shelf life and improved solubility compared to amide-acid prepolymer solutions.

Addition-type polyimides from solutions of monomeric reactants

The monomeric reactants approach was used to fabricate addition-type polyimide/graphite fiber composites with improved mechanical properties and thermal stability characteristics over those of composites derived from addition-type amide acid prepolymers. A screening study of 24 different monomer combinations was performed. The results of a more extensive investigation of a selected number of monomer combinations showed that the combination providing the best thermomechanical properties was 5-norbornene-2.3-dicarboxylic acid monomethyl ester/4,4(')-methylenedianiline/3,3(')4,4(')-benzophenonetetracarboxylic acid dimethyl ester at a molar ratio of 2/3.09/2.09.

Catalytic trimerization of aromatic nitriles for synthesis of polyimide matrix resins

Aromatic nitriles may be trimerized at moderate temperature and pressure with p-toluenesulfonic acid as catalyst. Studies were conducted to establish the effect of the reaction temperature, pressure, time, and catalyst concentration on yield of the trimerized product. Trimerization studies were also conducted to establish the effect of substituting electron donating or withdrawing groups on benzonitrile. Preliminary results of using the catalytic trimerization approach to prepare s-triazine cross-linked polyimide/graphite fiber composites are presented.

Graphite-polyimide composite for application to aircraft engines

A combined experimental and theoretical investigation was performed in order to (1) demonstrate that high quality angleplied laminates can be made from HT-S/PMR-RI (PMR in situ polymerization of monomeric reactants), (2) characterize the PMR-PI material and to determine the HT-S unidirectional composite properties required for composite micro and macromechanics and laminate analyses, and (3) select HT-S/PMR-PI laminate configurations to meet the general design requirements for high-tip-speed compressor blades. The results of the investigation showed that HT-S/PMR laminate configurations can be fabricated which satisfy the high-tip-speed compressor blade design requirements when operating within the temperature capability of the polymide matrix.
