The impact of pulsed RFI on the coded BER performance of the nonlinear satellite communication channel

An examination is conducted of the coded bit error rate (BER) performance of a satellite communication system in which binary phase-shift-keyed (BPSK) modulation is employed, pulsed CW or pulsed noise RFI is present, and the transponder contains a nonlinearity characterized by arbitrary AM/AM and AM/PM characteristics; the RFI pulse duration is further assumed to exceed that of the information symbol. Computed performance curves consider several hypothetical RFI scenarios in which either a hard limiter or an 8 dB clipper represent the transponder amplitude nonlinearity. Results demonstrate the potential seriousness of RFI duty cycles as low as 2 percent, and the fact that CW represents the most severe form of interference.

Nonparallel stability of three-dimensional flows

The linear stability of three-dimensional incompressible, isothermal, nonparallel boundary-layer flows has been investigated. The method of multiple scales is used to derive the partial-differential equations that describe the spatial modulations of the amplitude, phase and wavenumber of a disturbance. Group velocities are used to determine the disturbance growth direction. The envelope method is used to calculate the logarithmic amplitude growth rate N. The theory is applied to the flows over a swept-back tapered wing with boundary-layer suction. Results of such analysis for the X-21 wing are discussed. It is found that the nonparallel effects for this wing is substantial.

A new SPS antenna design to reduce grating lobes

In the Solar Power Satellite system, the antenna's misalignment will produce well defined grating lobes. These gratings lobe peaks occur every 440 km and are potentially hazardous to the environment. One way to suppress these peaks is to phase control every power module. The cost due to the increase in receiving electronics and processors, however, could prove to be prohibitive. A new design of the antenna involving the addition of two broad gaps, one along the x axis and another along the y axis is proposed. The gap distance is exactly one half of the distance between the center of two neighboring subarrays. Calculation of far field radiation patterns shows that the design reduces grating lobe peaks without sacrificing power in the main lobe.

Differentially coherent detection of QASK for frequency-hopping systems. I - Performance in the presence of a Gaussian noise environment

Bandwidth-conserving modulation techniques, which trade average power for bandwidth in a favorable exchange, have recently found widespread application in digital radio and satellite communication systems. Quadrature amplitude-shift-keying (QASK) is a particular type of the considered techniques. QASK makes use of multilevel signals to amplitude modulate the in-phase and quadrature components of a carrier. Frequency hopping (FH) is used to protect a conventional communication system from radio frequency interference (RFI) or jamming. Differentially coherent detection provides a possible solution to the effect of phase discontinuities introduced by FH. The application of such a detection technique to QASK signals is discussed. A receiver structure is proposed and its symbol error probability performance for an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) background is investigated.

Self-Modulated Laser Rangefinder

Longitudinal resonance modes exploited. Self-modulated-laser ranging system exploits presence of signals differing in frequency by longitudinalmode separation frequency fm. Two square-law photodetectors have outputs modulated by fm, and phase difference between two outputs is related to target distance. Laser transmitter/receiver measures distances as well as displacements of distant objects (such as vibrating buildings).

Time-resolved spectrophotometry of the emission lines in the galactic X-ray source H2252-035

The galactic X-ray source H2252-035 has been the object of a concentrated observational effort, since Griffiths et al. (1980) have identified it with a cataclysmic variable-like spectrum. Since the observed 859 s periodicity corresponds to the beat frequency between the X-ray and orbital periods, it has been interpreted as related to a reprocessing of the X-ray flux into optical emission in some region of the system which is rotating with the orbital period and heated by beamed X-ray emission from the compact star. In connection with the present investigation, H2252-035 has been observed with a 120 inch (3 m) telescope and image dissector scanner on 1980 September 9/10 and on 1981 September 20/21. At a time resolution of approximately 2 minutes, four bright emission lines showed short time-scale flickering and a pronounced orbital period variation in phase with the continuum modulation. A two-component model for the line emission region is proposed.

The nature of stellar active regions

Observational estimates of chromospheric radiative loss rates in Ca II H and K in main-sequence F, G, and K dwarfs are used to compare stars that span a range of activity levels with each other and with the sun. For stars with spectral types similar to that of the sun, it is found that chromospheric radiative losses in stars with active chromospheres exceed the flux emitted by plages on the sun at solar maximum by about a factor of 6. If this difference is due primarily to a difference in the fraction of the stellar surface covered by plage-like material, and not to a change in the character of the emission-line regions, then more than half of the stellar surface in stars with large chromospheric radiative loss rates must be covered by active regions. It is also possible to show that active regions in young solar-type stars extend at least to latitudes + or - 25 deg from the rotational equator and that a typical individual region contributes no more than 2 percent - 3 percent of the total H and K emission. In Kappa Cet, observations show that the rotational modulation persisted in both phase and amplitude for at least 100 days (12 rotation cycles).

Spacelab high density digital recorders

The design and performance of the high-density digital recorder (HDDR) developed for use at the NASA centers (KSC, JSC, and GSFC) and at the JPL to store and retrieve 50-Mb/s PCM data streams from the Spacelab experiments are reported. The recording reproduction, and transport requirements are reviewed; and the design solutions adopted in the final version of the HDDR are described, incuding three-position-modulation and Y-phase encoding, microprocessor-controlled automatic bit synchronization and equalization, cyclic-redundancy-check error detection and correction, clock regeneration, data and clock variations, tape-speed control, and EEE-488 remote control. Reliable performance, with bit error rates 1 in 10 to the 10th forward and 1 in 10 to the 9th reverse or better and packing density up to 50 percent greater than that obtainable using conventional codes, is reported after 1.5 years of service.

Structure of nonevaporating sprays. II - Drop and turbulence properties

This is the second part of a study reporting structure measurements in the dilute portion of axisymmetric nonevaporating sprays. Measurements are compared with predictions of three typical methods for analyzing sprays: (1) locally homogeneous flow (LHF) analysis, where slip between the phases is neglected; (2) deterministic separated flow (DSF) analysis, where slip is considered but effects of drop interactions with turbulence are ignored; and (3) stochastic separated flow (SSF) analysis, where both slip and effects of drop interactions with turbulence are considered. This part of the study reports measurements of mean and fluctuating drop velocities, the variation of Sauter mean diameter, and gas-phase turbulence properties in the dilute portion of the sprays. Best agreement between predictions and measurements was obtained with the SSF analysis. For present measurements in the dilute region (void fraction greater than 99.1 percent), effects of drops on gas-phase turbulence properties (turbulence modulation) were small. However, as the dense spray regions near the injector were approached, the measurements indicated modification of turbulence properties by drop motion.

Characteristic recovery times of Forbush-type decreases in the cosmic radiation. I - Observations at earth at different energies

Data on 30 asymmetric Forbush decreases recorded by the IMP spacecraft at 1 AU and the Mt. Washington neutron monitor over the period 1972-84 are examined to characterize the recovery characteristics of cosmic rays after the events. The spacecraft data are concentrated at energies of 1.7 GV, while the terrestrial instruments recorded events at 5 GV. Attention is paid to the relative amplitudes of the recorded transient decreases, the characteristic recovery times, and the energy dependence of the amplitudes and recovery time. The recovery times were found to be equal at both energy levels, supporting a concept of energy independence for the recoveries. Also, no correlations were found between the recovery times and the occurrences of a solar magnetic field reversal or with phase in the solar modulation cycle. A time-dependent, two-dimensional model is defined, which expresses the cosmic ray particle distributions as a function of the decay of the disturbance, with a small dependence on the transport parameters of the cosmic rays.

Optimizing a continuously variable filter in a hybrid optical correlator

In contrast to binary filters, continuously variable optical filters offer an ability to conpensate for certain imperfections in the optics of a hybrid correlator. Arbitrary static phase errors are introduced into a model of a phase-only filtering hybrid correlator, and a method of discovering a correction for them simulated. By a recursive technique a first approximation to the impulse's matched filter is adjusted (allowed to relax) so as to produce successively more localized distribution of the output in the correlation plane. The method is motivated by the development of continuously-variable phase-only spatial light modulators, but it is applicable to amplitude modulators and -with appropriate modification -- to binary modulators as well. The technique is robust against the form of the system's departure from ideal behavior.

Model for the 5 March 1979 gamma-ray transient

A model is proposed for the March 5, 1979 gamma-ray transient. A small lump of strange matter, previously ejected from a supernova explosion, struck a slowly rotating strange star. This resulted in a high-intensity flash of radiation from a hot spot produced by the impact. The high-intensity radiation blew open a crater in the crust; the energy released as this crater refilled was responsible for the longer-duration, lower-intensity phase. The 8-s modulation is due to the rotation of the star. A plausible scenario for the production of this event is discussed.

The performance of trellis coded multilevel DPSK on a fading mobile satellite channel

The performance of trellis-coded multilevel differential phase-shift-keying (MDPSK) modulation over Rician and Rayleigh fading channels is discussed. For operation at L-band, this signalling technique leads to a more robust system than the coherent system with dual pilot tone calibration previously proposed for UHF. The results are obtained using a combination of analysis and simulation. The analysis shows that the design criterion for trellis codes to be operated on fading channels with interleaving/deinterleaving is no longer free Euclidean distance. The correct design criterion for optimizing bit error probability of trellis coded MDPSD over fading channels is presented along with examples illustrating its application.

Space Station Freedom cupola definition

Following the realization that adequate Space Station Freedom viewing could not be achieved without breaking the plane of the modules, a conceptual design phase for the development of a cupola progressed from the idea of a small, bubble-type canopy to a much larger, two crewmember cupola. The evolving cupola conceptual designs were each evaluated against the requirements for providing a large field-of-view, a complete proximity control workstation with flexible and relocatable restraints, and sufficient volume for two, 95th percentile crewmembers to operate while still maintaining reasonable weight and size restrictions. As the SS Freedom program Preliminary Design Review draws closer, the cupola development phase shifts toward evaluation of viewing and operational capability. The appropriate balance of viewing, structures and operations must be achieved before the program can place confidence in a cupola design providing SS Freedom with a direct viewing workstation capable of supporting the great variety of tasks projected for the life of the station.
