Virtual Cable Impedance based Load Sharing in a Microgrid for Parallel Connected Grid Forming Converters

This paper presents a novel approach to power sharing between direct connected grid-forming converters, utilizing virtual cable impedance and droop-based outer loop control. To enhance stability, resistive droop is implemented, while virtual cable impedance with non-zero resistive and inductive components ensures improved power sharing. The inner loop controller employs a Lyapunov energy function to achieve superior dynamic performance. The proposed control architecture is validated through comprehensive modeling and real-time processor-in-the-loop simulations, demonstrating its robustness and efficiency under various operating conditions. The results highlight the potential of this control strategy to improve the reliability and efficiency of renewable energy systems. Additionally, a comparative analysis with traditional methods underscores the advantages of the proposed approach in terms of stability and performance. The proposed control architecture offers a scalable and flexible solution for grid-forming converters, enabling seamless integration of renewable energy sources. Its robustness and adaptability make it an attractive solution for real-world applications. Furthermore, the approach can be extended to other power electronic systems, enhancing overall system performance and efficiency. By providing a reliable and efficient control strategy, this paper contributes to the advancement of renewable energy systems and their adoption in the energy sector. The proposed control strategy has far-reaching implications for the widespread adoption of renewable energy sources, enabling a more sustainable and efficient energy future. The overall system is modeled in MATLAB/Simulink and PLECS software domain.

An Admittance-Based Protection Scheme for Microgrids

This paper presents a novel directional protection scheme to address the unique challenges associated with protection during unbalanced faults in a distribution system with high penetration of inverter-based resources. The scheme is based on a superimposed negative sequence admittance method. A coordination approach using a unique inverse-time undervoltage element is also presented. An analysis of the scheme, the detection criteria and the coordination method are performed. Also the impact of inverter-control on the scheme is discussed. Results from extensive simulation using MATLAB/Simulink are presented to show a selective and reliable response of the scheme to unbalanced faults

Recursive Blind Forecasting of Photovoltaic Generation and Consumer Load for Microgrids

Existing forecasting frameworks that predict time-series photovoltaic (PV) generation and consumer load for micro-grids' operation and control assume near-continuous availability of real-time predictors from the field. The incoming data are used to periodically re-train the models and update forecast snapshots over a moving horizon window. However, such frameworks are not resilient to disruptions in data availability caused by losses in communications between the field sensors and data loggers. This paper bridges the shortcoming by leveraging a previously proposed forecasting framework that is resilient to abrupt changes in data quality caused by communication losses. Assuming no availability of real-time field system data, which is typical in extreme weather events such as hurricanes, the framework uses lightweight recursive time-series models to independently forecast solar irradiance, ambient temperature, PV power, and consumer load for three horizon windows: 24 hours, 12 hours, and 1 hour. Four types of ensemble-based regression trees-simple gradient boosted trees (GBR), GBR with an adaptive component (A-GBR), random forests (RF), and extra trees (ExTR)-are leveraged and their performances are compared against a simple historical weekly mean. Numerical results show that A-GBR performs better on average by 32% for 24-hour horizon and 39% for 12-hour horizon, whereas ExTR outdoes the other models on average by 10% for 1-hour horizon.

Robust PID Control Against Nonlinear Uncertainties in Modern Power Systems with Microgrids

This paper investigates the problem of robust PID control for nonlinear power systems with uncertainties. In this paper, we analyze the challenges posed by nonlinearities and uncertainties in power systems, as well as the limitations of traditional linearization methods. On this basis, a PID control design method is proposed, which utilizes only the Lipschitz constant information of the nonlinear uncertainties to achieve global stability control for the power systems. The paper provides a rigorous mathematical foundation to demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the controller. Finally, simulation studies are conducted to validate and evaluate the performance of the proposed model, algorithm, and controller design.
