Nanoparticle-Mediated Assembly of Peptoid Nanosheets Functionalized with Solid-Binding Proteins: Designing Heterostructures for Hierarchy

The fabrication of ordered architectures that intimately integrate polymer, protein and inorganic components remains difficult. Two promising building blocks to tackle this challenge are peptoids, peptide mimics capable of self-assembly into well-defined structures, and solid-binding peptides, which offer a biological path to controlled inorganic assembly. Here, we report on the synthesis of 3.3 nm-thick, thiol-reactive peptoid nanosheets from equimolar mixtures of unmodified and maleimide-derivatized versions of the Nbpe 6 Nce 6 oligomer, optimize the location of engineered cysteine residues in silica-binding derivatives of superfolder green fluorescent protein for maleimide conjugation, and react the two components to form proteinpeptoid hybrids exhibiting partial or uniform protein coverage on both of their sides. Using 10 nm silica nanoparticles, we trigger the stacking of these 2D structures into a multi-layer material comprised of alternating peptoid, protein and organic layers. This simple and modular approach to hierarchical hybrid synthesis should prove useful in bioimaging and photocatalysis applications.

Evidence of Magnon-Mediated Orbital Magnetism in a Quasi-2D Topological Magnon Insulator

Here, we explore spin dynamics in Cu(1,3-bdc), a quasi-2D topological magnon insulator. The results show that the thermal evolution of the Landé $\textit{g}$ factor ($\textit{g}$) is anisotropic: $g_{\text{in-plane}}$ decreases while $g_{\text{out-of-plane}}$ increases with increasing temperature $\textit{T}$. Moreover, the anisotropy of the $\textit{g}$ factor (Δ$\textit{g}$) and the anisotropy of saturation magnetization ($ΔM_s$) are correlated below 4 K, but they diverge above 4 K. We show that the electronic orbital moment contributes to the g anisotropy at lower $\textit{T}$, while the topological orbital moment induced by thermally excited spin chirality dictates the g anisotropy at higher $\textit{T}$. Our work suggests an interplay among topology, spin chirality, and orbital magnetism in Cu(1,3-bdc).

Transport Mediating Core–Shell Photocatalyst Architecture for Selective Alkane Oxidation

The high activation barrier of the C-H bond in methane, combined with the high propensity of methanol and other liquid oxygenates toward overoxidation to CO 2 , have historically posed significant scientific and industrial challenges to the selective and direct conversion of methane to energy-dense fuels and chemical feedstocks. Here, we report a unique core-shell nanostructured photocatalyst, silica encapsulated TiO 2 decorated with AuPd nanoparticles (TiO 2 @SiO 2 -AuPd), that prevents methanol overoxidation on its surface and possesses high selectivity and yield of oxygenates even at high UV intensity. This room-temperature approach achieves high selectivity for oxygenates (94.5%) with a total oxygenate yield of 15.4 mmol/g cat ·h at 9.65 bar total pressure of CH 4 and O 2 . The working principles of this core-shell photocatalyst were also systematically investigated. Finally, this design concept was further demonstrated to be generalizable for the selective oxidation of other alkanes.

Interplay Between Strain and Thickness on the Effective Carrier Lifetime of Buffer-Mediated Epitaxial Germanium Probed by the Photoconductance Decay Technique

We report contactless effective minority carrier lifetime of epitaxially grown unstrained and in-plane <110> biaxially tensile-strained (001) germanium (..epsilon..-Ge) epilayers measured using microwave-reflectance photoconductance decay measurements. Strained Ge epilayers were grown using InxGa1-xAs linearly graded buffers on (001) GaAs substrates. Using homogeneous excitation of unstrained Ge epilayers, thickness-dependent separation of minority carrier lifetime components under low injection conditions yielded a bulk lifetime of 114 +/- 2 ns and low surface recombination velocity of 21.3 +/- 0.04 cm/s. More notably, an effective minority carrier lifetime of >100 ns obtained from sub-50 nm 1.6% tensile-strained Ge epilayers showed no degradation relative to the unstrained counterpart. Detailed material characterization using X-ray diffractometry revealed successful strain transfer of 0.61 and 0.89% to the Ge epilayers via InxGa1-xAs metamorphic buffers and confirms pseudomorphic growth. Lattice coherence observed at the e-Ge epilayer and InxGa1-xAs buffer heterointerfaces via transmission electron microscopy substantiates the prime material quality achieved. The relatively high carrier lifetimes achieved are an indicator of excellent material quality and provide a path forward to realize low-threshold Ge laser sources.

Centimeter-Scale Pillared-Layer Metal–Organic Framework Thin Films Mediated by Hydroxy Double Salt Intermediates for CO 2 Sensor Applications

Fabrication of metal–organic framework (MOF) thin films over macroscopic surface areas is a subject of great interest for gas sensor application platforms such as optics and microelectronics. However, a direct synthesis of MOF films at ambient conditions, in particular pillared-layer MOF films due to their anisotropic structures, remains a significant challenge. Herein, we demonstrate for the first time a facile construction of dense and continuous pillared-layer MOF thin films on a centimeter scale via an aluminum-doped zinc oxide template and hydroxy double salt (HDS) intermediates at room temperature. A series of Cu(II)-based pillared MOFs with different 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid (bdc) ligands were explored for optimizing MOF film formation for CO 2 sensor applications. Nonpolar ligands with lower water solubility preferentially formed crystalline pillared MOF structures from HDS intermediates. A Cu 2 (ndc) 2 (dabco) (ndc = 1,4-naphthalene-bdc; dabco = 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane) MOF demonstrated the most dense and uniform film growth with micrometer thickness over one square centimeter area. This synthetic approach for growing Cu 2 (ndc) 2 (dabco) MOF thin films was successfully translated toward two sensing platforms: a quartz crystal microbalance and an optical fiber sensor. These Cu 2 (ndc) 2 (dabco) MOF-coated sensors displayed sensitivity toward CO 2 and response/recovery time on the scale of seconds, even at moderate humidity levels. Finally, this work provides a road map for producing continuous and anisotropic crystalline MOF thin films over a centimeter scale area on various substrates, which will greatly facilitate their utilization in MOF-based sensor devices, among other applications.

pH-Mediated Colorimetric and Luminescent Sensing of Aqueous Nitrate Anions by a Platinum(II) Luminophore@Mesoporous Silica Composite

Increased levels of nitrate (NO 3 – ) in the environment can be detrimental to human health. Herein, we report a robust, cost-effective, and scalable, hybrid material-based colorimetric/luminescent sensor technology for rapid, selective, sensitive, and interference-free in situ NO 3 – detection. These hybrid materials are based on a square-planar platinum(II) salt [Pt(tpy)Cl]PF6 (tpy = 2,2';6',2''-terpyridine) supported on mesoporous silica. The platinum salt undergoes a vivid change in color and luminescence upon exposure to aqueous NO 3 – anions at pH ≤ 0 caused by substitution of the PF6– anions by aqueous NO 3 – . This change in photophysics of the platinum salt is induced by a rearrangement of its crystal lattice that leads to an extended Pt···Pt···Pt interaction, along with a concomitant change in its electronic structure. Furthermore, incorporating the material into mesoporous silica enhances the surface area and increases the detection sensitivity. A NO 3 – detection limit of 0.05 mM (3.1 ppm) is achieved, which is sufficiently lower than the ambient water quality limit of 0.16 mM (10 ppm) set by the United States Environmental Protection Agency. The colorimetric/luminescence of the hybrid material is highly selective to aqueous NO 3 – anions in the presence of other interfering anions, suggesting that this material is a promising candidate for the rapid NO 3 – detection and quantification in practical samples without separation, concentration, or other pretreatment steps.

Ion Pairing Mediates Molecular Organization Across Liquid/Liquid Interfaces

Liquid/liquid interfaces play a central role in scientific fields ranging from nanomaterial synthesis and soft matter electronics to nuclear waste remediation and chemical separations. This diversity of functions arises from an interface’s ability to respond to changing conditions in its neighboring bulk phases. Understanding what drives this interfacial flexibility can provide novel avenues for designing new functional interfaces. However, limiting this progress is an inadequate understanding of the subtle intermolecular and interphase interactions taking place at the molecular level. Here, we use surface-specific vibrational sum frequency generation spectroscopy combined with atomistic molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the self-assembly and structure of model ionic oligomers consisting of an oligodimethylsiloxane (ODMS) tail covalently attached to a positively charged methyl imidazolium (MIM + ) head group at buried oil/aqueous interfaces. We show how the presence of seemingly innocuous salts can impart dramatic changes to the ODMS tail conformations in the oil phase via specific ion effects and ion-pairing interactions taking place in the aqueous phase. These specific ion interactions are shown to drive enhanced amphiphile adsorption, induce morphological changes, and disrupt emergent hydrogen-bonding structures at the interface. Tuning these interactions allows for independent control over the oligomer structure in the oil phase versus interfacial population changes and represents key mechanistic insight that is needed to control chemical reactions at liquid/liquid interfaces.
