Technoeconomic Insights into Metal Hydrides for Stationary Hydrogen Storage

Abstract Metal hydrides (MHs) are promising candidates for storing hydrogen at ambient conditions at high volumetric energy densities. Recent developments suggest hydride‐based systems can cycle and operate at favorable pressures and temperatures that work well with fuel cells used in stationary power applications. In this study, we present a comprehensive design and cost analysis of MH‐based long duration hydrogen storage facilities for a variety of power end users (0 to 20 megawatts (MW) supplied over 0 to 100 hours), to offer insights on technical targets for material development and operation strategies. Our findings indicate that hydride‐based storage systems hold significant size advantage in physical footprint, requiring up to 65% less land than 170‐bar compressed gas storage. Metal hydride systems can be cost competitive with 350‐bar compressed gas systems, with TiFe 0.85 Mn 0.05 achieving $0.45/kWh and complex MH Mg(NH 2 ) 2 ‐2.1LiH‐0.1KH achieving $0.38/kWh. Extending charging times and increasing operating cycles significantly reduce levelized cost of storage, especially for complex MHs. Key strategies to further enhance the competitiveness of MHs include leveraging waste heat from fuel cells, reducing use of critical minerals, and achieving MH production costs of US$10/kg.

Giant Exfoliation Induced Magnetic Coercivity in Fe 3 GaTe 2

Permanent magnets with strong anisotropy and high coercivity underpin modern information and energy technologies, yet rare-earth-free alternatives remain limited. Here, we show that thickness engineering via mechanical exfoliation induces hard magnetic behavior in the van der Waals ferromagnet Fe 3 GaTe 2 . Bulk crystals exhibit Curie temperatures above 350 K but negligible room-temperature coercivity. When thinned below ∼100 nm, the coercive field is dramatically enhanced, reaching nearly 1 T at room temperature for in-plane fields—comparable to conventional hard magnets. Micromagnetic analysis reveals a crossover in magnetization reversal from domain-mediated processes in bulk samples to quasi-coherent rotation in thin flakes, driven by increased effective anisotropy and suppressed domain formation. This thickness-dependent transition enables tuning of magnetic hardness without chemical modification. Combined with high saturation magnetization and robust room-temperature performance, Fe 3 GaTe 2 emerges as a promising rare-earth-free material for spintronic applications. Its layered structure further allows integration into van der Waals heterostructures, where large in-plane coercivity can stabilize magnetic states against perturbations and interlayer coupling, offering potential for high-density nonvolatile memory and domain-wall-based devices.

Quantitative concentration measurements in a turbulent helium jet using rainbow schlieren deflectometry

Rainbow schlieren deflectometry (RSD) is applied to acquire quantitative concentration measurements in a turbulent environment for the first time. RSD methodology is developed and validated using Rayleigh scattering data available in the literature. Experiments were performed in an initially laminar, momentum-driven helium jet injected into ambient air. Full-field measurements are acquired that span the laminar, transition, and fully turbulent regions of the jet. Furthermore, the RSD results are shown to provide accurate measurements in each region and also confirm the self-similar nature of the fully turbulent jet. Analysis shows that the transition from laminar to turbulent flow occurs across an axial span that decreases with increasing Reynolds number. Experiments with a long exposure time were conducted to evaluate the limitations of hardware averaging of the RSD signal in comparison with software averaging.

High compressive energy absorption and shape recovery behavior of additively manufactured textile-inspired cylindrical braided metamaterials

Mechanical metamaterials (MMs) are engineered structures with unique mechanical properties that arise from their unique spatial arrangement or lattice-like structure. The most commonly designed MMs such as honeycomb and re-entrant auxetics are prone to failure at the sharp corners and weak joints due to the increased stress concentration under deformation. To mitigate this challenge, braided MM structures involving intertwining threads of nylon—forming curved unit cells—have been studied. These textile-inspired cylindrical braided metamaterials (CBMMs) with contrasting unit cells, namely diamond and regular CBMMs, were fabricated by 3D printing. The layer-by-layer deposited structure built by fused filament fabrication delivered an assembly of overlapped threads that are fused at the contact point. To understand deformation behavior of these MMs, finite element models were developed for various load scenarios including quasi-static compression, cyclic and creep loads at room temperature. Stress distribution, deformation mechanisms, and failure modes were analyzed and validated by experiments to analyze the geometries and associated performance. The diamond CBMMs showed stress softening at 30 % compressive strain, withstanding a load of ∼440 N, whereas the regular CBMMs at 50 % strain experienced ∼250 N. The diamond CBMMs delivered higher creep resistance under sustained load and better energy absorption under cyclic loading than the regular CBMMs. The latter, however, exhibited 94 % shape recovery in contrast to 88 % recovery in former prototype during their first cyclic load. In conclusion, this study helps design mechanical lightweight devices that endure significant sustained load and exhibit enhanced energy absorption and shape recovery characteristics in cyclic loading.
