Mapping the electromagnetic fields of heavy-ion collisions with the Breit-Wheeler process

Ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions are expected to produce the strongest electromagnetic fields in the known Universe. These highly-Lorentz contracted fields can manifest themselves as linearly polarized quasi-real photons that can interact via the Breit-Wheeler process to produce lepton anti-lepton pairs. Furthermore, the energy and momentum distribution of the produced dileptons carry information about the strength and spatial distribution of the colliding fields. Recently it has been demonstrated that photons from these fields can interact even in heavy-ion collisions with hadronic overlap, providing a purely electromagnetic probe of the produced medium. In this review we discuss the recent theoretical progress and experimental advances for mapping the ultra-strong electromagnetic fields produced in heavy-ion collisions via measurement of the Breit-Wheeler process.

Cold atoms in space: community workshop summary and proposed road-map

We summarise the discussions at a virtual Community Workshop on Cold Atoms in Space concerning the status of cold atom technologies, the prospective scientific and societal opportunities offered by their deployment in space, and the developments needed before cold atoms could be operated in space. The cold atom technologies discussed include atomic clocks, quantum gravimeters and accelerometers, and atom interferometers. Prospective applications include metrology, geodesy and measurement of terrestrial mass change due to, e.g., climate change, and fundamental science experiments such as tests of the equivalence principle, searches for dark matter, measurements of gravitational waves and tests of quantum mechanics. We review the current status of cold atom technologies and outline the requirements for their space qualification, including the development paths and the corresponding technical milestones, and identifying possible pathfinder missions to pave the way for missions to exploit the full potential of cold atoms in space. Finally, we present a first draft of a possible road-map for achieving these goals, that we propose for discussion by the interested cold atom, Earth Observation, fundamental physics and other prospective scientific user communities, together with the European Space Agency (ESA) and national space and research funding agencies.

Mapping of the transient electric field causing spark suppression in Micromegas of the ATLAS New Small Wheels

Resistive strips Micromegas are employed in the ATLAS New Small Wheel project. They have already been installed and operate in the experimental cavern of the ATLAS experiment at CERN. This work attempts to describe the mechanism of the surface electric charge spread on a resistive strip of the Micromegas detector and the created transient electric field leading to the suppression of the spark rate in the amplification region. The electric field spatial mapping is calculated versus time by using the accurate 3-layer geometry as a function of the resistive layer thickness around its value used in Micromegas detectors. We also used the approximated method based on 2-layer geometry to investigate its discrepancy from the accurate one.

New approaches to an old problem: addressing spatial gaps in the World Stress Map

Abstract A well-recognized characteristic of the World Stress Map (WSM) database is the continued presence of large spatial gaps in the distribution of the data records despite the more than 40-year development history of the database. The current release has more than 30 000 high-quality (A–C) data records (often referred to as ‘stress indicators’), but while some continental areas (such as Australia) have seen a significant increase in spatial converge with the latest release, other continental regions (Africa, central Asia, most of South America) remain markedly sparse. In this contribution we (1) review the current state of the spatial distribution of stress indicators in the continental regions (above sea-level); (2) quantify the clustering of the stress indicators in the latest WSM release using the Hopkins statistic as a way to explore the current spatial distribution of the indicators and assess future WSM releases; and (3) present three approaches (joint inversion, seismic anisotropy and InSAR) that provide a way to fill in the gaps (both in the S Hmax orientation and principal stress magnitudes) in regions that lack active seismicity and where borehole drilling is cost prohibitive. These three approaches have the potential to guide procedures for improving a priori estimates of the ambient stress field in the Earth's crust and reduce the uncertainty in predicting both the magnitude and orientation of the principal tectonic stresses.

Operando Topography and Mechanical Property Mapping of CO 2 Reduction Gas-Diffusion Electrodes Operating at High Current Densities

Electrochemical atomic force microscopy (EC-AFM) enables measurement of electrode topography and mechanical properties during electrochemical reactions. However, for aqueous-based reactions that make gas products, such as CO 2 reduction and water splitting into CO/H 2 , current densities below 1 mA cm −2 have been necessary to prevent formation of bubbles at the electrode; such bubbles can stick to the AFM probe and prevent further AFM imaging. Here, we demonstrate a novel cell design with a gas-diffusion electrode (GDE) to exhaust the gas products, thereby enabling high current density EC-AFM measurements at 1, 10, and 100 mA cm −2 that are not disturbed by bubble formation at the electrode surface. These experiments revealed a stable morphological structure of Cu catalysts deposited on GDEs during high current density operation. Systematic spatially resolved maps of deformation and adhesion showed no signs of a gas-liquid interface between catalyst particles of the GDE.

Mapping Spatiotemporal Solvent Velocity from Measured Concentration Gradients in a Polarized Electrolyte

The electric-field induced motion of neutral species impedes the efficacy of electrochemical devices. By combining operando X-ray transmission measurements with continuum mechanics, we have developed a methodology for determining the velocity of neutral solvent molecules under an applied field. The X-ray transmission experiments were used to determine ion concentration profiles as a function of space and time in a polymer electrolyte. The unsteady state solvent mass balance equation was solved numerically with experimental concentration profiles to map spatiotemporal solvent velocities. We compare our experimentally derived results with predictions made with concentrated solution theory. We use the cation transference number as the only adjustable parameter to match experimental measurements of both concentration and solvent velocity. Our approach may be used to determine solvent velocity with any operando technique used to measure time-dependent ion concentration profiles.

XRF-MAPS

x-ray fluorescence (XRF) imaging typically involves the creation and analysis of 3D data sets, where at each scan position a full energy dispersive x-ray spectrum is recorded. This allows one to later process the data in a variety of different approaches, e.g., by spectral region of interest (ROI) summation with or without background subtraction, principal component analysis, or fitting. XRF-Maps is a C++ open source software package that implements these functions to provide a tool set for the analysis of XRF data sets.

Hydrogen Hub Systems Analysis and Mapping Tool (ParaCraft) v1

A plug and play techno-economic analysis (TEA) and lifecycle assessment (LCA) tool was built that could incorporate new projects into the California ARCHES LLC Hydrogen hub, and generate results for the project, as well as the overall hub on an annual basis. The model was first constructed in Microsoft Excel and ArcGIS, but required labor intensive updating and manual decision making regarding the matching of hydrogen supplier and offtaker and estimation of transportation distances and utility sources. The project team converted the Excel model used for the ARCHES LLC hub conceptualization into a highly flexible and nearly completely automated R code. The R code runs the TEA and LCA, as well as provides mapping capabilities that automatically link projects by latitude and longitude to nearby utilities.

Mapping ammonia-diesel combustion on a single-cylinder 107 mm bore diesel engine retrofitted for ammonia port-fuel injection

Ammonia is garnering significant interest from the international maritime sector as an alternative fuel. It is attractive as a hydrogen carrier and as a fuel because it has a higher volumetric energy density compared with gaseous or liquid hydrogen, making it easier to store and transport without requiring high pressures or cryogenic storage. Ammonia has significant toxicity concerns, but safe handling procedures have already been established because it is one of the most widely produced chemicals worldwide for use as a fertilizer. Barriers to consuming NH 3 as a fuel in engines include (1) less favorable ignition energy and flame speed compared with conventional fuels; (2) emissions challenges, including potentially high NH 3 , NO X , and N 2 O emissions; and (3) fuel delivery and handling challenges. Although NH 3 has been used to fuel compression-ignition marine engines in limited demonstration projects, technical barriers still exist. The use of NH 3 as a fuel in smaller-bore, high-speed auxiliary engines for large vessels and for smaller inland and coastal marine applications remains unaddressed. This work investigates a late-injection diesel pilot ignition dual-fuel NH 3 strategy using a single-cylinder, high-speed Cummins four-stroke diesel engine platform with a 107 mm bore and 1.1 L displacement per cylinder. The engine was modified for port fuel injection of heated gaseous anhydrous NH 3 . The diesel fuel injection system and the combustion geometry were unmodified to represent a retrofit application, which would minimize additional hardware to maximize diesel fuel displacement with NH 3 . Furthermore, the results show the applicability of a late injection diesel pilot strategy to overcome the challenging fuel properties of NH 3 over the engine operating envelope. Mapping results focusing on emissions are presented, and comparisons are made to a conventional diesel combustion baseline.

Updated distribution maps of predominant Culex mosquitoes across the Americas

Abstract Background Estimates of the geographical distribution of Culex mosquitoes in the Americas have been limited to state and provincial levels in the United States and Canada and based on data from the 1980s. Since these estimates were made, there have been many more documented observations of mosquitoes and new methods have been developed for species distribution modeling. Moreover, mosquito distributions are affected by environmental conditions, which have changed since the 1980s. This calls for updated estimates of these distributions to understand the risk of emerging and re-emerging mosquito-borne diseases. Methods We used contemporary mosquito data, environmental drivers, and a machine learning ecological niche model to create updated estimates of the geographical range of seven predominant Culex species across North America and South America: Culex erraticus , Culex nigripalpus , Culex pipiens , Culex quinquefasciatus , Culex restuans , Culex salinarius , and Culex tarsalis . Results We found that Culex mosquito species differ in their geographical range. Each Culex species is sensitive to both natural and human-influenced environmental factors, especially climate and land cover type. Some prefer urban environments instead of rural ones, and some are limited to tropical or humid areas. Many are found throughout the Central Plains of the USA. Conclusions Our updated contemporary Culex distribution maps may be used to assess mosquito-borne disease risk. It is critical to understand the current geographical distributions of these important disease vectors and the key environmental predictors structuring their distributions not only to assess current risk, but also to understand how they will respond to climate change. Since the environmental predictors structuring the geographical distribution of mosquito species varied, we hypothesize that each species may have a different response to climate change. Shallow EGS Regional Resource Potential and Map - Snake River Plain

SMU Geothermal Lab developed a methodology to estimate shallow (1 km to 4 km) Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) resource potential using an approach that utilizes recent geology and geophysical research along with new well data to improve the thermal conductivity model, mitigate impacts from groundwater flow in the thermal model, and examine radioactivity data variations. By incorporating the results of the most recent projects with the SMU shallow methodology, we developed a more accurate, updated resource estimate for the Snake River Plain (SRP). The resulting maps and resource estimates can be used by the National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL), Bureau of Land Management (BLM), and the public to determine how best to move forward with future project development.
