Laser photovoltaic power system synergy for SEI applications

Solar arrays can provide reliable space power, but do not operate when there is no solar energy. Photovoltaic arrays can also convert laser energy with high efficiency. One proposal to reduce the required mass of energy storage required is to illuminate the photovoltaic arrays by a ground laser system. It is proposed to locate large lasers on cloud-free sites at one or more ground locations, and use large lenses or mirrors with adaptive optical correction to reduce the beam spread due to diffraction or atmospheric turbulence. During the eclipse periods or lunar night, the lasers illuminate the solar arrays to a level sufficient to provide operating power.

Studies of discharge mechanisms in high pressure gases-applications to high efficiency high power lasers

By measuring the absorption and emission cantinua of various states in the cesium/xenon molecule, the collisional rates critical in populating the alkali/rare gas excimer levels have been estimated. Cs atomic states that are weakly optically connected to ground have been shown to form excimer levels that are attractive as potential dissociation lasers. In particular, the (Cs/7 2S/Xe) excited molecule appears promising as a source of high energy laser radiation due to its large dissociation energy, stimulated emission cross section, and small population inversion densities. Monitoring of the optically pumped Cs2 molecular absorption profile in the presence of xenon shows a drastic change with increasing xenon pressure for the Cs2C band. Dominant absorption at large xenon densities is centered around approximately 6380 A as opposed to 6300 A for lower perturber pressure.

Studies of basic mechanisms occurring in high pressure gases: Applications to high efficiency high power lasers

The atomic fluorine laser was investigated. In the hollow cathode, lasing on Fluorine transitions in the doublet system lasted for up to 80 microns with no signs of self-termination. The excitation process of the laser appears to depend heavily upon the fluorine donor utilized. For instance, a single step process is involved when NF3 is used whereas a two step process is evident for SF6. The details are discussed.

Analysis of lunar laser ranging data for Earth dynamics applications

The effects of elasticity and of tidal friction within the Moon were incorporated into the numerical model of the Moon's rotation which was used in an effort to determine the axial rotation of the Earth, as measured by Universal Time. Some 2,651 normal points representing ranges measured to Lunokhod 2, and to the Apollo 11, 14, and 15 retroflectors were analyzed. Smoothed estimates derived from the lunar rangefinding were compared with smoothed values published by the International Bureau of Time, in the 1968 and 1969 systems. The derived values at the observation sight were connected to corresponding values at the Conventional International Origin, using the BIH data for polar motion. Differences are discussed.

Silicon superlattices: Theory and application to semiconductor devices

Silicon superlattices and their applicability to improved semiconductor devices were studied. The device application potential of the atomic like dimension of III-V semiconductor superlattices fabricated in the form of ultrathin periodically layered heterostructures was examined. Whether this leads to quantum size effects and creates the possibility to alter familiar transport and optical properties over broad physical ranges was studied. Applications to improved semiconductor lasers and electrondevices were achieved. Possible application of silicon sperlattices to faster high speed computing devices was examined. It was found that the silicon lattices show features of smaller fundamental energyband gaps and reduced effective masses. The effects correlate strongly with both the chemical and geometrical nature of the superlattice.

I/asterisk/ /6s 4P/ collisional quenching - Application to the IF 491-nm laser

Measurements of the rate constants for quenching of the excited I (6s 4P) states by Ar, Xe, CF39I, UF6, and NF3 are described. Each rate constant is determined by recording the exponential time decay of the excited IF or excited I2 (342 nm) fluorescence in the afterglow of the e-beam-excited plasmas containing Ar, CF3I, NF3, and the desired quenching gas. In addition, further experimental evidence in support of neutral channel formation of excited IF in e-beam-pumped Ar/CF3I/NF3 mixtures is presented. Details of the experimental apparatus and gas handling procedures are given, and the kinetics model developed to interpret the experimental data is described.

Design and chemical synthesis of iodine-containing molecules for application to solar-pumped I* lasers

This work is directed toward the design and chemical synthesis of new media for solar-pumped I* lasers. In view of the desirability of preparing a perfluoroalkyl iodide absorbing strongly at 300 nm, the relationship betwen perfluoroalkyl iodide structure and the corresponding absorption wavelength was reexamined. Analysis of existing data suggests that, in this family of compounds, the absorption maximum shifts to longer wavelength, as desired, as the C-I bond in the lasant is progressively weakened. Weakening of the C-I bond correlates, in turn, with increasing stability of the perfluoroalkyl radical formed upon photodissociation of the iodide. The extremely promising absorption characteristics of perfluoro-tert-butyl iodide can be accounted for on this basis. A new technique of diode laser probing to obtain precise yields of I* atoms in photodissociation was also developed.

Design and chemical synthesis of iodine-containing molecules for application to solar-pumped I* lasers

The design and chemical synthesis of new media for solar pumped iodine molecule lasers are explored. In an effort to prepare an iodo fluorocarbon compound absorbing strongly at 300 nm or above, the synthesis of perfluoro allylic iodides was investigated. These compounds furnish especially stable allylic radicals upon photodissociation. The desired red shift is anticipated in the absorption maximum could correlate with increasing radical stability. This expectation was based upon the analysis, previously reported, of the structures and absorption maxima of compounds studied earlier. A previously unknown substance was prepared, a prototypical target molecule, perfluoro-3-iodocyclopent-1-ene. It was obtained by reaction of perfluorocyclopentene with sulfur trioxide under the influence of antimony pentafluoride catalyst, followed by treatment of the resulting allylic fluorosulfonate with sodium iodide in sulfoland solvent. Preliminary data indicate that the absorption maximum for the iodo fluorocarbon is not shifted significantly to longer wavelength. It is not certain whether this result reflects an unexpected influence of the cyclic structure upon the position of the absorption maximum.

Design and chemical synthesis of iodine-containing molecules for application to solar-pumped I* lasers

Research is directed toward the design and synthesis of new media for solar-pumped I* lasers. Since the most effective existing lasants are perfluoroalkyl iodides, a strategy was proposed for the development of improved materials of this type with absorption maxima at 300 nm. Absorption spectra were synthesized and measured for prototypical species containing iodine bound to boron, iron, and cobalt.

Status on Technology Development of Optic Fiber-Coupled Laser Ignition System for Rocket Engine Applications

To pursue technology developments for future launch vehicles, NASA/Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) is examining vortex chamber concepts for liquid rocket engine applications. Past studies indicated that the vortex chamber schemes potentially have a number of advantages over conventional chamber methods. Due to the nature of the vortex flow, relatively cooler propellant streams tend to flow along the chamber wall. Hence, the thruster chamber can be operated without the need of any cooling techniques. This vortex flow also creates strong turbulence, which promotes the propellant mixing process. Consequently, the subject chamber concept: not only offer system simplicity, but also enhance the combustion performance. Test results have shown that chamber performance is markedly high even at a low chamber length-to-diameter ratio. This incentive can be translated to a convenience in the thrust chamber packaging.

Instantaneous Doppler Global Velocimetry Measurements of a Rotor Wake: Lessons Learned

A combined Doppler Global Velocimetry (DGV) and Projection Moir Interferometry (PMI) investigation of a helicopter rotor wake flow field and rotor blade deformation is presented. The three-component DGV system uses a single-frequency, frequency-doubled Nd:YAG laser to obtain instantaneous velocity measurements in the flow. The PMI system uses a pulsed laser-diode bar to obtain blade bending and twist measurements at the same instant that DGV measured the flow. The application of pulse lasers to DGV and PMI in large-scale wind tunnel applications represents a major step forward in the development of these technologies. As such, a great deal was learned about the difficulties of using these instruments to obtain instantaneous measurements in large facilities. Laser speckle and other image noise in the DGV data images were found to be traceable to the Nd:YAG laser. Although image processing techniques were used to virtually eliminate laser speckle noise, the source of low-frequency image noise is still under investigation. The PMI results agreed well with theoretical predictions of blade bending and twist.
