An isolated, well-defined infrared cirrus cloud

High spatial resolution H I measurements of a high-latitude FIR cirrus cloud (l = 9 deg, b = 51 deg) were obtained with the Arecibo 310 m telescope. The cloud is well isolated spatially and has a velocity well-separated from other H I clouds, providing an ideal laboratory for studying diffuse interstellar clouds. The Iv(100)/N(H) and Iv(60)/Iv(100) ratios are consistent with the Draine and Anderson model which includes a distribution of grain sizes down to 3 A. The small grains undergo transient heating and affect the 60 micron FIR continuum emission. Current models, however, underpredict Iv(12)/Iv(100) and Iv(25)/Iv(100) by more than a factor of 2. The effects small grains have on the thermal equilibrium of diffuse interstellar clouds are discussed.

Steady evaporation and condensation of isolated clouds in hot plasma

The evaporation and condensation of an isolated cloud embedded in a thermally stable hot gas is studied under the assumption that the ambient hot gas is in thermal equilibrium at constant temperature and that the cloud is large enough that classical conduction is valid. It is found that the cloud will evaporate provided that it is smaller than the Field length, which gives the maximum range of thermal conduction. A large cloud can condense only if the pressure exceeds the saturated vapor pressure p(sat). The pressure required for condensation increases as the cloud radius decreases, until condensation becomes impossible. Since p(sat) is close to the maximum pressure at which the hot gas can exist in equilibrium, condensation is likely to occur under unsteady conditions. The Compton-bremsstrahlung case is treated as an example.

Simultaneous infrared and UV-visible absorption spectra of matrix-isolated carbon vapor

Carbon molecules were suggested as possible carriers of the diffuse interstellar bands. In particular, it was proposed that the 443 nm diffuse interstellar band is due to the same molecule which gives rise to the 447 nm absorption feature in argon matrix-isolated carbon vapor. If so, then an associated C-C stretching mode should be seen in the IR. By doing spectroscopy in both the IR and UV-visible regions on the same sample, the present work provides evidence for correlating UV-visible absorption features with those found in the IR. Early data indicates no correlation between the strongest IR feature (1997/cm) and the 447 nm band. Correlation with weaker IR features is being investigated.

Evaluation of an expert system for fault detection, isolation, and recovery in the manned maneuvering unit

The authors explore issues in the specification, verification, and validation of artificial intelligence (AI) based software, using a prototype fault detection, isolation and recovery (FDIR) system for the Manned Maneuvering Unit (MMU). They use this system as a vehicle for exploring issues in the semantics of C-Language Integrated Production System (CLIPS)-style rule-based languages, the verification of properties relating to safety and reliability, and the static and dynamic analysis of knowledge based systems. This analysis reveals errors and shortcomings in the MMU FDIR system and raises a number of issues concerning software engineering in CLIPs. The authors came to realize that the MMU FDIR system does not conform to conventional definitions of AI software, despite the fact that it was intended and indeed presented as an AI system. The authors discuss this apparent disparity and related questions such as the role of AI techniques in space and aircraft operations and the suitability of CLIPS for critical applications.

Orthogonal series generalized likelihood ratio test for failure detection and isolation

A new failure detection and isolation algorithm for linear dynamic systems is presented. This algorithm, the Orthogonal Series Generalized Likelihood Ratio (OSGLR) test, is based on the assumption that the failure modes of interest can be represented by truncated series expansions. This assumption leads to a failure detection algorithm with several desirable properties. Computer simulation results are presented for the detection of the failures of actuators and sensors of a C-130 aircraft. The results show that the OSGLR test generally performs as well as the GLR test in terms of time to detect a failure and is more robust to failure mode uncertainty. However, the OSGLR test is also somewhat more sensitive to modeling errors than the GLR test.

Failure detection and isolation experiments with the Langley Mini-Mast

A report is presented on experiments to demonstrate failure detection and isolation (FDI) using the flexible truss facility Mini-Mast at the NASA Langley Research Center. Two techniques are selected for study because they are applicable both to sensor and actuator failures and because they do not depend on hypotheses about the forms of possible failures. These two are the method of generalized parity relations and the failure detection filter. These methods utilize the concept of analytical redundancy and therefore their performance depends on the fidelity of the model of the dynamics of the system being monitored. Results are given for sensor FDI using generalized parity relations and input-output data collected during operation of the Mini-Mast. component failures are simulated in the data. The dependence of the performance of the methods on choices of the parameters in their implementation is explored.

Active suspensions for vibration isolation

The concept of mechanical impedances is used to analyze constraints on a single-link vibration isolation suspension. In particular, an assessment is made of the effects of the limited feedback bandwidth on the achievable suspension impedance and corresponding limits of attenuation of the transmitted force using Bode integral constraints and Blackman's formula. The performance of a piezoelectric strut is evaluated as an example.

A parametric experimental study of isolated rectangular nozzles

A parametric study has been conducted in the Langley 16-Foot Transonic Tunnel on an isolated nonaxisymmetric fuselage, simulating a twin-engine fighter. The effects of aft-end closure distribution (top/bottom nozzle flap boattail angle vs. nozzle sidewall boattail angle) and afterbody/nozzle corner treatment (sharp or radius) were investigated. Four different closure distributions with three different corner radii were tested. Tests were conducted over a range of Mach numbers from 0.40-1.25 at zero degrees angle of attack. Solid plume simulators were used to simulate the jet exhaust.

Siphon flows in isolated magnetic flux tubes. IV - Critical flows with standing tube shocks

Critical siphon flows in arched, isolated magnetic flux tubes are studied within the thin flux tube approximation, with a view toward applications to intense magnetic flux concentrations in the solar photosphere. The results of calculations of the strength and position of the standing tube shock in the supercritical downstream branch of a critical siphon flow are presented, as are calculations of the flow variables all along the flux tube and the equilibrium path of the flux tube in the surrounding atmosphere. It is suggested that arched magnetic flux tubes, with magnetic field strength increased by a siphon flow, may be associated with some of the intense, discrete magnetic elements observed in the solar photosphere.

Microgravity testing a surgical isolation containment system for Space Station use

Anticipated hazards for crewmembers in future long term space flights may result in a variety of injuries including trauma and burns. Management of these injuries will require special techniques because of the lack of gravity, limitations of space and environmental restrictions. A small surgical isolation containment system was developed and tested in microgravity. The chamber provided both protection of the injury and of the cabin environment and is felt to be the most effective means of trauma and burn care in future Health Maintenance Facilities planned for prolonged space exposure.

The role of matrix material and CCl4 (electron acceptor) on the ionization mechanisms of matrix-isolated naphthalene

The formation mechanisms and optical properties of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) isolated in argon and neon matrices were studied in a systematic manner in an attempt to provide spectroscopic data on PAH ions under conditions relevant to astrophysical applications. The results obtained indicate the strong influence of the matrix material on the competing radiative (fluorescence and phosphorescence) and nonradiative (internal conversion and intersystem crossing) relaxation processes of the trapped molecule.

Intelligent fault isolation and diagnosis for communication satellite systems

Discussed here is a prototype diagnosis expert system to provide the Advanced Communication Technology Satellite (ACTS) System with autonomous diagnosis capability. The system, the Fault Isolation and Diagnosis EXpert (FIDEX) system, is a frame-based system that uses hierarchical structures to represent such items as the satellite's subsystems, components, sensors, and fault states. This overall frame architecture integrates the hierarchical structures into a lattice that provides a flexible representation scheme and facilitates system maintenance. FIDEX uses an inexact reasoning technique based on the incrementally acquired evidence approach developed by Shortliffe. The system is designed with a primitive learning ability through which it maintains a record of past diagnosis studies.

A six degree-of-freedom magnetic bearing for microgravity vibration isolation

A design for a magnetic bearing, proposed as the fine stage of a coarse-fine actuator for microgravity vibration isolation, is presented. The bearing is novel in that it uses a geometry that has just three independent flux path systems. This contrasts the twelve flux path systems (six bidirectional thrust bearings) used in conventional designs. The design results in compactness, light weight, and high performance when compared with the published designs. A control system is proposed to reject disturbances caused by an umbilical connection to the experiment.
