Genetic control of morphological transitions in a coacervating protein template

Nature routinely exploits liquid–liquid phase separation (LLPS) of proteins to control the assembly and mineralization of hybrid materials. Here, we show that fusion of the Car9 silica-binding peptide to an elastin-like polypeptide (ELP) yields temperature- and sequence-programmable soft matter templates for the synthesis of silicified architectures ranging in size from nanometers to micrometers. Specifically, we demonstrate unprecedented control over the diameter of silica nanoparticles (SiNP) in the 30–60 nm range with 4 nm precision, show that a single arginine residue (R4) in the Car9 sequence underpins the transition from micelles to proteinosomes, and find that substitutions in other basic residues modulate electrostatic repulsion and solvation to enable access to kinetically trapped species. These structures, which include interconnected micelles, small (∼200 nm) and large (>5 µm) vesicles, are readily visualized by SEM imaging following silicification. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and AlphaFold predictions reveal that mutations in positively charged residues alter interfacial packing, hydration, and conformational freedom of the silica-binding segments. Overall, our results establish sequence and thermal energy as synergistic levers for morphological control across length scales using solid-binding ELPs and establish mineralization as a powerful tool to visualize the structure of dynamic soft matter assemblies.

Neutrinoless double beta decay sensitivity of the XLZD rare event observatory

The XLZD collaboration is developing a two-phase xenon time projection chamber with an active mass of 60–80 t capable of probing the remaining weakly interacting massive particle-nucleon interaction parameter space down to the so-called neutrino fog. In this work we show that, based on the performance of currently operating detectors using the same technology and a realistic reduction of radioactivity in detector materials, such an experiment will also be able to competitively search for neutrinoless double beta decay in 136 Xe using a natural-abundance xenon target. XLZD can reach a 3σ discovery potential half-life of 5.7 × 10 27 years (and a 90% CL exclusion of 1.3 × 10 28 years) with 10 years of data taking, corresponding to a Majorana mass range of 7.3–31.3 meV (4.8–20.5 meV). XLZD will thus exclude the inverted neutrino mass ordering parameter space and will start to probe the normal ordering region for most of the nuclear matrix elements commonly considered by the community.

Composite quarks and leptons with embedded QCD

We construct a model of quark and lepton compositeness based on an 𝑆⁢𝑈⁡(15) gauge interaction that confines chiral preons, which are also charged under the weakly coupled 𝑆⁢𝑈⁢(4) PS ×𝑆⁢𝑈⁢(2) 𝐿 ×𝑆⁢𝑈⁢(2) 𝑅 gauge group. The breaking of the latter, down to the Standard Model group, is achieved by scalar 𝑆⁢𝑈⁡(15) bound states at a scale in the 30–100 TeV range. The embedding of the QCD gauge group in 𝑆⁢𝑈⁢(4) PS slows down the running of 𝛼 𝑠 in the UV. We estimate the effects of the strongly coupled 𝑆⁢𝑈⁡(15) dynamics on the running of the 𝑆⁢𝑈⁢(4) PS ×𝑆⁢𝑈⁢(2) 𝐿 ×𝑆⁢𝑈⁢(2) 𝑅 gauge couplings, which likely remain perturbative beyond the compositeness scale of about 10 3 –10 4 TeV, and even above a unification scale. A composite vectorlike lepton doublet acquires a mass in the TeV range probed at future colliders, and an extended Higgs sector arises from six-preon bound states.

Search for events with one displaced vertex from long-lived neutral particles decaying into hadronic jets in the ATLAS muon spectrometer in 𝑝⁢𝑝 collisions at $\sqrt{𝑠}$ = 13 TeV

A search for events with one displaced vertex from long-lived particles using data collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider is presented, using 140 fb −1 of proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{𝑠}$ =13 TeV recorded in 2015–2018. The search employs techniques for reconstructing vertices of long-lived particles decaying into hadronic jets in the muon spectrometer displaced between 3 m and 14 m from the primary interaction vertex. The observed number of events is consistent with the expected background and limits for several benchmark signals are determined. A scalar-portal model and a Higgs-boson-portal baryogenesis model are considered. A dedicated analysis channel is employed to target Z-boson associated long-lived particle production, including an axionlike particle and a dark photon model. For the Higgs boson model, branching fractions above 1% are excluded at 95% confidence level for long-lived particle proper decay lengths ranging from 5 cm to 40 m. For the photophobic axionlike particle model considered, this search produces the strongest limits to date for proper decay lengths greater than 𝒪⁡(10) cm.

Twin sterile neutrino dark matter

We propose that the dark matter of our Universe could be sterile neutrinos which reside within the twin sector of a mirror twin Higgs model. In our scenario, these particles are produced through a version of the Dodelson-Widrow mechanism that takes place entirely within the twin sector, yielding a dark matter candidate that is consistent with x-ray and gamma-ray line constraints. Furthermore, this scenario can naturally avoid the cosmological problems that are typically encountered in mirror twin Higgs models. In particular, if the sterile neutrinos in the Standard Model sector decay out of equilibrium, they can heat the Standard Model bath and reduce the contributions of the twin particles to N eff . Such decays also reduce the effective temperature of the dark matter, thereby relaxing constraints from large-scale structure. The sterile neutrinos included in this model are compatible with the seesaw mechanism for generating Standard Model neutrino masses. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

A multiverse outside of the swampland

A multiverse can arise from landscapes without de Sitter minima. It can be populated during a period of eternal inflation without trans-Planckian field excursions and without flat potentials. This multiverse can explain the values of the cosmological constant and of the weak scale. In the process of proving these statements, we derive a few simple, but counterintuitive results. We show that it is easy to write models of eternal inflation compatible with the distance and refined de Sitter conjectures. Secondly, tunneling transitions that move fields from a lower-energy vacuum to a higher-energy vacuum and generate baby universes are possible, and occur during eternal inflation. Finally, we relax the assumption of no de Sitter minima and show that this more standard multiverse can be populated by Coleman-de Luccia transitions in about 100 e-folds of inflation.
