Energy dependence of polarized 𝛾⁢𝛾 → 𝑒 + ⁢ 𝑒− in peripheral Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 54.4 and 200 GeV with the STAR experiment at RHIC

We report the differential yields at mid-rapidity of the Breit-Wheeler process (𝛾⁢𝛾 → 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − ) in peripheral Au+Aucollisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 54.4 and 200 GeV with the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), as a function of energy $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$, 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − transverse momentum 𝑝 T , 𝑝$^{2}_{T}$, invariant mass 𝑀 𝑒⁢𝑒 , and azimuthal angle. In the invariant mass range of 0.4 < 𝑀 𝑒⁢𝑒 < 2.6GeV/𝑐 2 at low transverse momentum (𝑝 T < 0.15GeV/𝑐), the yields increase while the pair √⟨𝑝$^{2}_{T}$⟩ decreases with increasing $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$, a feature that is correctly predicted by the QED calculation. Here, the energy dependencies of the measured quantities are sensitive to the nuclear form factor, infrared divergence and photon polarization. The data are compiled and used to extract the charge radius of the Au nucleus.

Bulk properties and multi-particle correlations in large and small systems

Charged particle production is calculated in a hybrid framework consisting of the IP-Glasma initial state, Music viscous relativistic fluid dynamics, and the UrQMD microscopic hadronic cascade. Using one set of parameters, we compute observables for a large variety of collision systems. Furthermore, we compare to experimental data in p+p, p+Pb, Xe+Xe, Au+Au and Pb+Pb collisions at various energies, and make predictions for potential O+O runs at RHIC and LHC.

Characterizing initial- and final-state effects of relativistic nuclear collisions

Here, the multiphase transport model (AMPT) is used to study the final-state effects on the symmetric correlations (SC), asymmetric correlations (ASC), normalized symmetric correlations (NSC), and normalized asymmetric correlations (NASC) in Au+Au collisions at 200 GeV. The correlators' sensitivity to nonflow effects associated with long- and short-range nonflow correlations are also discussed using the HIJING model. The results indicate that SC, ASC, NSC, and NASC can give accompanying constraints for initial- and final-state effects. In addition, conducting further detailed experimental measurements spanning a broad range of collision systems and beam energies will serve as an additional constraint for the theoretical models' calculations.

Four-dimensional QCD equation of state with multiple chemical potentials

Here, we construct a four-dimensional version of the equation of state (EoS) model neos, neos-4d, as a function of the temperature and chemical potentials of baryon, electric charge, and strangeness for the hot and dense quantum chromodynamics (QCD) matter created in relativistic nuclear collisions. This EoS enables multiple conserved charge current evolution in a relativistic fluid. Input from lattice QCD simulations and a hadron resonance gas model is considered for constructing the equation of state. We investigate its applicability to the relativistic hydrodynamic description of nuclear collisions and present a method for efficient numerical implementation.

Anomalous spin polarization from turbulent color fields

Here we study the important, yet widely overlooked, role of gluons for spin transport with a connection to local parity violation in quark gluon plasmas. We employ the formalism of quantum kinetic theory to quarks in weakly coupled quantum chromodynamics to derive the source terms for quark spin polarization. These source terms involve parity-odd correlators of dynamically generated color fields in near-equilibrium quark gluon plasmas and give rise to locally fluctuating axial charge currents. Our results provide a possible explanation for the spin alignment of vector mesons measured in high-energy nuclear collisions.

Probing the Partonic Degrees of Freedom in High-Multiplicity p–Pb collisions at √ s NN = 5.02 TeV

We investigate the role of partonic degrees of freedom in high-multiplicity p–Pb collisions at √ s NN = 5.02 TeV carried out at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) by studying the production and collective flow of identified hadrons at intermediate p T via the coalescence of soft partons from the viscous hydrodynamics (VISH 2 + 1) and hard partons from the energy loss model, linear Boltzmann transport (LBT). We find that combining these intermediate p T hadrons with the low p T hadrons from the hydrodynamically expanding fluid and high p T hadrons from the fragmentation of quenched jets, the resulting hydro-dynamics-coalescence-fragmentation model provides a nice description of measured p T spectra and differential elliptic flow v 2 (p T ) of pions, kaons, and protons over the p T range from 0 to 6 GeV. We further demonstrate the necessity of including the quark coalescence contribution to reproduce the experimentally observed approximate number of constituent quark scaling of hadron v 2 at intermediate p T . Furthermore, our results thus indicate the importance of partonic degrees of freedom and also hint at the possible formation of quark-gluon plasma in high-multiplicity p–Pb collisions at the LHC.

Hadronic resonance production and interaction in p-Pb collisions at LHC energies in EPOS3

Using the EPOS3 model with the Ultrarelativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics (UrQMD) model to describe the hadronic phase, we study the production of short-lived hadronic resonances and the modification of their yields and p T spectra in p-Pb collisions at √sNN= 5.02 TeV. High-multiplicity p-Pb collisions exhibit similar behavior to midperipheral Pb-Pb collisions at LHC energies, and we find indications of a short-lived hadronic phase in p-Pb collisions that can modify resonance yields and p T spectra through scattering processes. The evolution of resonance production is investigated as a function of the system size, which is related to the lifetime of the hadronic phase in order to study the onset and evolution of scattering effects in p-Pb collisions. We also study hadron production separately in the core and corona parts of these collisions and explore how this division affects the total particle yields as the system size increases.

Chiral Magnetic Effects in Nuclear Collisions

The interplay of quantum anomalies with strong magnetic fields and vorticity in chiral systems could lead to novel transport phenomena, such as the chiral magnetic effect (CME), the chiral magnetic wave (CMW), and the chiral vortical effect (CVE). In high-energy nuclear collisions, these chiral effects may survive the expansion of a quark–gluon plasma fireball and be detected in experiments. The experimental searches for the CME, the CMW, and the CVE have aroused extensive interest over the past couple of decades. The main goal of this article is to review the latest experimental progress in the search for these novel chiral transport phenomena at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory and the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Future programs to help reduce uncertainties and facilitate the interpretation of the data are also discussed.

Novel Relaxation Time Approximation to the Relativistic Boltzmann Equation

In this work, we show that the widely used relaxation time approximation to the relativistic Boltzmann equation contains basic flaws, being incompatible with micro- and macroscopic conservation laws if the relaxation time depends on energy or general matching conditions are applied. We propose a new approximation that fixes such fundamental issues and maintains the basic properties of the linearized Boltzmann collision operator. We show how this correction affects transport coefficients, such as the bulk viscosity and particle diffusion.

Sensitivity of D meson azimuthal anisotropies to system size and nuclear structure

Recent experimental data at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) confirmed that the soft sector azimuthal anisotropies in central XeXe collisions are sensitive to deformations in the wave function of the Xenon nucleus. Additionally, the CMS experiment found that D meson flow is slightly suppressed compared to other particle species when considering quark number scaling in small systems of pPb compared to PbPb. In this talk we used the D and B Mesons Modular (DAB-MOD) code coupled to Trento+v-USPhydro to calculate the R AA and v n ’s of D mesons using different energy loss models and Langevin techniques. Comparing D mesons R AA and v n in PbPb to XeXe collisions it is found that in central collisions D meson azimuthal anisotropies are sensitive to details in the nuclear structure wave function of Xenon. Additionally, we find that in mid-central collisions the smaller system size of XeXe suppresses D meson flow.

Non-Gaussian transverse momentum fluctuations from impact parameter fluctuations

The transverse momentum per particle, [p t ], fluctuates event by event in ultrarelativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions, for a given multiplicity. These fluctuations are small and approximately Gaussian, but a nonzero skewness has been predicted on the basis of hydrodynamic calculations, and seen experimentally. We argue that the mechanism driving the skewness is that, if the system thermalizes, the mean transverse momentum increases with impact parameter for a fixed collision multiplicity. We postulate that fluctuations are Gaussian at fixed impact parameter, and that non-Gaussianities solely result from impact parameter fluctuations. Using recent data on the variance of [p t ] fluctuations, we make quantitative predictions for their skewness and kurtosis as a function of the collision multiplicity. Here, we predict, in particular, a spectacular increase of the skewness below the knee of the multiplicity distribution, followed by a fast decrease.

Relaxation time approximation for a multispecies relativistic gas

We generalize a recent prescription for the relaxation time approximation for the relativistic Boltzmann equation for systems with multiple particle species at finite temperature. This is performed by adding counter-terms to the traditional Anderson-Witting ansatz for each particle species. Our approach allows for the use of momentum-dependent relaxation times and the obedience of local conservation laws regardless of the definition of the local equilibrium state. As an application, we derive the first order Chapman-Enskog corrections to the equilibrium distribution and display results for the hadron-resonance gas. We also demonstrate that our collision term ansatz obeys the second law of thermodynamics.

D Meson Sensitivity to a System Size Scan at LHC

Experimental measurements in pA collisions indicate no D meson suppression (R pPb ~ 1) but a surprisingly large v 2 . To better understand these results we propose a system size scan at the LHC involving 16 OO, 40 ArAr, 129 XeXe and 208 PbPb collisions. Using Trento+ v-USPhydro+DAB-MOD to make predictions, we find that the R AA tends towards unity when the system size is decreased, but nonetheless, in the most central collisions v 2 {2} is almost independent of the colliding system. Furthermore, these results are analyzed in light of path length and initial eccentricity variations.

Minijet clustering algorithm using transverse-momentum seeds in high-energy nuclear collisions

We propose an algorithm to detect mini-jet clusters in high-energy nuclear collisions, by selecting a high-transverse-momentum (pT) particle as a seed and assigning a clustering radius (R) in the pseudorapidity and azimuthal-angle space. Our PYTHIA simulations for p+p collisions show that a scheme with a seeding p T of around 0.5 GeV/c and R of approximately 0.6 satisfactorily identifies mini-jet clusters. The correlation between clusters obtained in PYTHIA calculations using the algorithm exhibits the proper behavior of hard-scattering-like processes, suggesting its usefulness in isolating mini-jet-like clusters from non-hard-scattering soft processes when applied to actual nuclear-collision data, thereby allowing a closer examination of both the mini-jet and the soft mechanisms.

Global Polarization of Ξ and Ω Hyperons in Au + Au Collisions at s N N = 200 GeV

Global polarization of Ξ and Ω hyperons has been measured for the first time in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=200 GeV. The measurements of the $Ξ^{-}$ and $\overline{Ξ}^{+}$ hyperon polarization have been performed by two independent methods, via analysis of the angular distribution of the daughter particles in the parity violating weak decay Ξ→Λ+π, as well as by measuring the polarization of the daughter Λ hyperon, polarized via polarization transfer from its parent. The polarization, obtained by combining the results from the two methods and averaged over $Ξ^{-}$ and $\overline{Ξ}^{+}$, is measured to be $\langle{P_{Ξ}}\rangle$=0.47±0.10(stat)±0.23(syst)% for the collision centrality 20%-80%. The $\langle{P_{Ξ}}\rangle$ is found to be slightly larger than the inclusive Λ polarization and in reasonable agreement with a multiphase transport model. The $\langle{P_{Ξ}}\rangle$ is found to follow the centrality dependence of the vorticity predicted in the model, increasing toward more peripheral collisions. Finally, the global polarization of Ω, $\langle{P_{Ω}}\rangle$=1.11±0.87(stat)±1.97(syst)% was obtained by measuring the polarization of daughter Λ in the decay Ω→Λ+K, assuming the polarization transfer factor $C_{ΩΛ}=1$.
