Simultaneous classical and quantum communication scheme based on coherent detection

An improved coherent communication scheme is provided. The coherent communication scheme encodes both classical and quantum information simultaneously using isolated groups of states: classical information is represented by different groups and can be decoded deterministically; and quantum information is represented by highly overlapped states within the same group, thus guaranteeing security. Decoding includes projecting the detection results at the receiver to one of the distinguishable encoding groups first, which allows the classical information to be read out, and then generating a quantum key from the residual randomness. This communications scheme enables simultaneous classical communication and QKD over the same communication channel using the same transmitter and receiver, opening the door to operate QKD in the background of classical communication and at negligible costs.

Long-haul high rate quantum key distribution

Multiple bit values can be encoded on a single photon in a quantum key distribution (QKD) system using a plurality of sidebands of an optical carrier frequency. Computational and conjugate bases can be defined, and photons decoded based on a selected state from either basis. If n sidebands are available, as many as log2n bits can be encoded on a single photon. Errors in detected bit values due to selection of an incorrect basis state or other errors can be at least partially corrected by bit distillation to identity bit strings for which a transmitter and a receiver record the same values, without insecure transmission of these values.

Neural interface methods and apparatus to provide artificial sensory capabilities to a subject

Embodiments of neural interfaces according to the present invention comprise sensor modules for sensing environmental attributes beyond the natural sensory capability of a subject, and communicating the attributes wirelessly to an external (ex-vivo) portable module attached to the subject. The ex-vivo module encodes and communicates the attributes via a transcutaneous inductively coupled link to an internal (in-vivo) module implanted within the subject. The in-vivo module converts the attribute information into electrical neural stimuli that are delivered to a peripheral nerve bundle within the subject, via an implanted electrode. Methods and apparatus according to the invention incorporate implantable batteries to power the in-vivo module allowing for transcutaneous bidirectional communication of low voltage (e.g. on the order of 5 volts) encoded signals as stimuli commands and neural responses, in a robust, low-error rate, communication channel with minimal effects to the subjects' skin.

Convolutional Neural Networks Based Remote Sensing Scene Classification under Clear and Cloudy Environments

Remote sensing (RS) scene classification has wide applications in the environmental monitoring and geological survey. In the real-world applications, the RS scene images taken by the satellite might have two scenarios: clear and cloudy environments. However, most of existing methods did not consider these two environments simultaneously. In this paper, we assume that the global and local features are iscriminative in either clear or cloudy environments. Many existing Convolution Neural Networks (CNN) based models have made excellent achievements in the image classification, however they somewhat ignored the global and local features in their network structure. In this paper, we propose a new CNN based network (named GLNet) with the Global Encoder and Local Encoder to extract the discriminative global and local features for the RS scene classification, where the constraints for inter-class dispersion and intra-class compactness are embedded in the GLNet training. The experimental results on two publicized RS scene classification datasets show that the proposed GLNet could achieve better performance based on many existing CNN backbones under both clear and cloudy environments.

High power handling digitizer using photonics

Devices, methods for analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) that perform high-dynamic range measurements based on optical techniques are disclosed. In one example aspect, an optical encoder includes a polarization rotator configured to receive a train of optical pulses, and an electro-optic (EO) modulator coupled to an output of the polarization rotator. The EO modulator is configured to receive a radio frequency (RF) signal and to produce a phase modulated signal in accordance with the RF signal. The optical encoder also includes a polarizing beam splitter coupled to the output of the EO modulator; and an optical hybrid configured to receive two optical signals from the polarizing beam splitter and to produce four optical outputs that are each phase shifted with respect to one another.

Engineered microbes for conversion of organic compounds to medium chain length alcohols and methods of use

This disclosure provides a genetically-modified bacterium from the genus Pseudomonas that comprises an exogenous nucleic acid encoding an enoyl-CoA reductase and an exogenous nucleic acid encoding an acyl-CoA reductase that produces medium chain length alcohols. The disclosure further provides methods for producing medium chain alcohols using such genetically-modified bacterium. This disclosure provides a renewable, bio-based production platform for valuable mcl-alcohols that have a wide range of industrial applications. Current production of mcl-alcohols typically occurs through the hydrogenation of plant oils and waxes. This process leads to issues of deforestation and is largely unsustainable. Utilizing waste lignin streams as the carbon source provides a more sustainable feedstock that can be generated from plant waste like corn stover. Along with this, the use of lignin avoids competition with food resources as traditional starch and sugar feedstocks.

Generative attribute optimization

A generative attribute optimization (“GAO”) system facilitates understanding of effects of changes of attribute values of an object on a characteristic of the object and automatically identifying attribute values to achieve a desired result for the characteristic. The GAO system trains a generator (encoder and decoder) using an attribute generative adversarial network. The GAO model includes the trained generator and a separately trained predictor model. The GAO model inputs an input image and modified attribute values and employs the encoder and the decoder to generate a modified image that is the input image modified based on the modified attribute values. The GAO model then employs the predictor model to that inputs the modified image and generate a prediction of a characteristic of the modified image. The GAO system may employ an optimizer to modify the attribute values until an objective based on the desired result is achieved.
