Minimizing the environmental impacts of amine-based post-combustion carbon capture technologies is essential for meeting environmental permitting regulations and ensuring public acceptance. Experimental test campaigns at the CO₂ capture pilot plant in Niederaussem using CESAR1 demonstrated that integrating available emission abatement technologies can significantly reduce the concentration of amines and degradation products in CO₂-depleted flue gas to below the detection limit of an infrared spectrometer. The study confirmed that proprietary dry bed technology (OEASE Aerozone™) or a second water wash can lower AMP and PZ emissions to below 1 mg/Nm³. However, to achieve very low NH₃ emissions below 2 mg/Nm³, an acid or other chemically active wash downstream of the water wash is required. A configuration with a dry bed or a double water wash results in a carbon capture cost (CCC) of 44 €/tCO₂, and a CO₂ avoided cost (CAC) of 86 €/tCO₂. A configuration with an acid wash increases the CCC to 47 €/tCO₂ and the CAC to 90 €/tCO₂ due to the amine losses in the acid waste and its treatment.

ZIF-8 was synthesized in supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2). In situ powder X-ray diffraction, ex situ microscopy and simulations, provides a encompassing view of the formation of ZIF-8 and intermediary ZnO@ZIF-8 composites in this nontraditional solvent. Time-resolved imaging exposed divergent physicochemical reaction pathways from previous studies of the growth of anisotropic ZIF-8 core@shell structures in traditional solvents. Synthetically relevant physio-chemical properties of scCO2 were integrated into classical nucleation theory, relating interfacial forces with 3D nu-cleation outcomes. The kinetics of crystallization were examined and displayed a characteristic signature of time- and temperature-dependent mechanisms over the extent of the reaction. Lastly, we show that subtle factors, such as the extent of reaction and the size/shape of sacrificial templates can tailor ZIF-8 composition and size, eliciting control over hierarchical porosity in a nonconventional green solvent.

Abstract How aquatic primary productivity influences the carbon (C) sequestering capacity of wetlands is uncertain. We evaluated the magnitude and variability in aquatic C dynamics and compared them to net ecosystem CO 2 exchange (NEE) and ecosystem respiration ( R eco ) rates within calcareous freshwater wetlands in Everglades National Park. We continuously recorded 30-min measurements of dissolved oxygen (DO), water level, water temperature ( T water ), and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR). These measurements were coupled with ecosystem CO 2 fluxes over 5 years (2012–2016) in a long-hydroperiod peat-rich, freshwater marsh and a short-hydroperiod, freshwater marl prairie. Daily net aquatic primary productivity (NAPP) rates indicated both wetlands were generally net heterotrophic. Gross aquatic primary productivity (GAPP) ranged from 0 to − 6.3 g C m −2 day −1 and aquatic respiration ( R Aq ) from 0 to 6.13 g C m −2 day −1 . Nonlinear interactions between water level, T water , and GAPP and R Aq resulted in high variability in NAPP that contributed to NEE. Net aquatic primary productivity accounted for 4–5% of the deviance explained in NEE rates. With respect to the flux magnitude, daily NAPP was a greater proportion of daily NEE at the long-hydroperiod site (mean = 95%) compared to the short-hydroperiod site (mean = 64%). Although we have confirmed the significant contribution of NAPP to NEE in both long- and short-hydroperiod freshwater wetlands, the decoupling of the aquatic and ecosystem fluxes could largely depend on emergent vegetation, the carbonate cycle, and the lateral C flux.
