Catalytic production of δ-valerolactone (DVL) from biobased 2-hydroxytetrahydropyran (HTHP) – Combined experimental and modeling study

δ-Valerolactone (DVL) is a five-carbon (C5) cyclic ester that can undergo ring-opening polymerization to yield high-performance, biocompatible polyesters. But current market prices of C5 chemicals like DVL are very high due to poor availability of C5 feedstock in petroleum. Herein, we demonstrate a novel route to DVL synthesis via dehydrogenation of biomass-derived 2-hydroxytetrahydropyran (HTHP) over Cu/SiO 2 without the use of toxic reagents. Since HTHP exists in thermal equilibrium with 3,4-dihydropyran (DHP) via dehydration, and with 2,2’-oxybis(tetrahydropyran) and 5-(tetrahydropyran-2-yloxy)pentanal via acetalization, we have also determined the thermochemistry (ΔH rxn and ΔG rxn ) of each competing reaction using density functional theory (DFT) calculations at the M06-2X/cc-pVTZ level. Finally, by developing a kinetic model of all 8 reactions involved, we have achieved 84% selectivity to DVL at 150°C in a packed bed reactor for over 72 hours of time on stream.

Exploring the role of electronic structure on photo-catalytic behavior of carbon-nitride polymorphs

A fully self-consistent density-functional theory (DFT) with improved functionals is used herein to provide a comprehensive account of structural, electronic, and optical properties of C 3 N 4 polymorphs. Using our recently developed van Leeuwen-Baerends (vLB) corrected local-density approximation (LDA), we implemented LDA + vLB within full-potential N th -order muffin-tin orbital (FP-NMTO) method and show that it improves structural properties and band gaps compared to semi-local functionals (LDA/GGA). We demonstrate that the LDA + vLB predicts band-structure and work-function for well-studied 2D-graphene and bulk-Si in very good agreement with experiments, and more exact hybrid functional (HSE) calculations as implemented in the Quantum-Espresso (QE) package. The structural and electronic-structure (band gap) properties of C 3 N 4 polymorphs calculated using FP-NMTO-LDA + vLB is compared with more sophisticated hybrid-functional calculations. We also perform detailed investigation of photocatalytic behavior using QE-HSE method of C 3 N 4 polymorphs through work-function, band (valence and conduction) position with respect to water reduction and oxidation potential. Our results show $γ$-C 3 N 4 as the best candidate for photocatalysis among all the C 3 N 4 polymorphs but it is dynamically unstable at ‘zero’ pressure. We show that $γ$-C 3 N 4 can be stabilized under hydrostatic-pressure, which improves its photocatalytic behavior relative to water reduction and oxidation potentials.

Remarkable self-degradation of Cu/SAPO-34 selective catalytic reduction catalysts during storage at ambient conditions

A model Cu/SAPO-34 SCR catalyst with all Cu species maintained as isolated Cu(II) ions is synthesized herein. Following lengthy storage on the shelf under ambient conditions, this catalyst completely and irreversibly deactivates upon any heat treatments above ~100 °C. Via detailed characterizations with surface area/pore volume analysis, XRD, H 2 -TPR, and 27 Al, 29 Si and 31 P solid-state NMR, as well as continuous wave and pulsed EPR studies, it is concluded that over the course of storage, the SCR active sites [Cu(OH)] + and Brønsted acid sites ≡Si-O(H)-Al≡ are attacked by H 2 O molecules trapped in the SAPO-34 framework pores, and undergo hydrolysis to form copper hydroxide and terminal Al sites. Upon thermal treatment, these species interact with each other to form copper-aluminate-like species, leading to irreversible deactivation of this catalyst. This deactivation mechanism does not require or necessarily lead to extensive degradation (i.e., crystallinity loss) of the SAPO-34 support.

Catalytic direct conversion of ethane to value-added chemicals under microwave irradiation

The reaction mechanism of ethane conversion over 4 % Mo-0.5 % Fe/ZSM-5 catalyst was investigated using two different reactors with different heating modes. A microwave fixed-bed reactor (MWFB) was used and its performance was compared to a conventional thermal fixed-bed reactor (CTFB). Over 80 % ethane conversion was achieved under microwave irradiation mode at 375 °C. Here, to achieve the same ethane conversion conventionally, the reaction temperature had to be elevated to 660 °C in the CTFB. The formation rates and selectivity of the products were compared under these two heating methods. The CTFB products had a higher selectivity towards aromatic compounds; whereas, the MWFB products had a higher selectivity towards ethylene; 26.5 % higher than the CTFB. Carbon analysis over spent catalysts of CTFB showed three distinct types of coke, whereas the microwave resulted in a single higher temperature coke type.
