Affine transformations from aerial photos to computer compatible tapes

During the development of a project to estimate wheat production, it became necessary to pull data, corresponding to particular fields in a test site, off an ERTS computer compatible tape. Aerial photographs and topographic maps were on hand for the test site. A method was devised, using an affine transformation, to relate the aerial photographs or topographic maps to the tapes. One can thereby access data on the tape corresponding to regions covered by only a few pixels. The theory can be used for the registration of two tapes for the same area and for the geometric correction of images.

Report 2: First Application of the Successive Transformation Method

Report 1 of these studies described a basic method for predicting lunar surface temperatures, using readings recorded by Surveyor I and extrapolating to obtain surface temperatures in other selected areas. The areas selected were those considered as potential Apollo landing sites. This second report indicates that the temperature isotherms are directly related to the topographical profile of the surface areas they cover. If, after further observations by Surveyor 11, it becomes evident that the "Successive Transformation Method" provides accurate temperature data, this technique would become a valuable tool for charting the profile of any remote surface where manned spacecraft could be landed.

Fourier transform techniques for the inference of cloud motion

The development and evaluation are reported of phase shift techniques based on the Fourier transform for the estimation of cloud motion from geosynchronous meteorological satellite photographs. An alternative approach to cloud motion estimation, involving thresholding, was proposed and studied.

A practical multi-spectrum Hadamard Transform Spectrometer

A Hadamard Transform Spectrometer (HTS) which simultaneously obtains fifteen infrared spectra, each having 255 spectral elements was constructed. Spectra are obtained essentially in real time through use of a minicomputer with 8K words of memory and a CRT display. This permits operation of the instrument in the field.

Stepwise Iterative Fourier Transform: The SIFT

A program, designed specifically to study the respective effects of some common data problems on results obtained through stepwise iterative Fourier transformation of synthetic data with known waveform composition, was outlined. Included in this group were the problems of gaps in the data, different time-series lengths, periodic but nonsinusoidal waveforms, and noisy (low signal-to-noise) data. Results on sinusoidal data were also compared with results obtained on narrow band noise with similar characteristics. The findings showed that the analytic procedure under study can reliably reduce data in the nature of (1) sinusoids in noise, (2) asymmetric but periodic waves in noise, and (3) sinusoids in noise with substantial gaps in the data. The program was also able to analyze narrow-band noise well, but with increased interpretational problems. The procedure was shown to be a powerful technique for analysis of periodicities, in comparison with classical spectrum analysis techniques. However, informed use of the stepwise procedure nevertheless requires some background of knowledge concerning characteristics of the biological processes under study.

Asynoptic meteorological data assimilation by means of a time coordinate transformation

A possible method for assimilating large quantities of asynoptic data, such as satellite observations, into numerical weather forecasts, is investigated. The method is based on a transformation of the time coordinate to coincide with satellite paths, and a well-posed problem is solved in order to obtain forecasts beyond the time of data acquisition. Simulated barotropic forecasts based on the proposed technique are compared with forecasts derived from the direct insertion of data. Results indicate that only in ideal situations, when asynoptic data are obtained both continuosly and accurately, will the method function well as compared with direct insertion techniques.

Measurements of solar magnetic fields by Fourier transform techniques. I - Unsaturated lines

If the basic profile shapes of the normal Zeeman triplet do not have zeros in their Fourier transform, the magnetic field splitting can be determined independent of the profile shape. When the ratio of the splitting of the components is greater than the intrinsic FWHM of the component profiles, the magnetic splitting can be determined with significantly greater accuracy than the measurement accuracy of the original profile. For Gaussian shaped components and a ratio of magnetic splitting to FWHM of 1.5, the noise reduction factor is 25.

Practical multi-spectrum Hadamard transform spectrometer

Specifications of a new Hadamard transform spectrometer for infrared astronomical applications are presented. The instrument has 15 entrance slits and 255 exit slits. Data can be gathered at the rate of up to five readings per second so that the entire spectral run lasts some thirteen minutes. The data is processed in real time by a minicomputer. At the end of the thirteen minute run the spectrum is available for immediate viewing on a CRT display. The spectra can be punched and stored on paper tape for later processing.

The thermal expansion and high temperature transformation of GeSe

The thermal expansion of GeSe has been studied above room temperature up to the melting point of 670 plus or minus 5 C by X-ray diffraction techniques using a 190 mm Unicam high temperature camera. The thermal expansion of the crystallographic axes is linear with a distinct change in the expansion coefficients for all axes above 400 C. The relative changes in the axes indicate a rearrangement of the structure towards cubic symmetry with increasing temperature. The transformation of GeSe from the orthorhombic to a normal NaCl-type structure is observed at 651 plus or minus 5 C. The lattice parameter of the cubic form of GeSe is a 0 ? 5.730 plus or minus 0.003 A at 656 C. The GeSe lattice remains cubic up to the melting point.

A transformation method for constrained-function minimization

A direct method for constrained-function minimization is discussed. The method involves the construction of an appropriate function mapping all of one finite dimensional space onto the region defined by the constraints. Functions which produce such a transformation are constructed for a variety of constraint regions including, for example, those arising from linear and quadratic inequalities and equalities. In addition, the computational performance of this method is studied in the situation where the Davidon-Fletcher-Powell algorithm is used to solve the resulting unconstrained problem. Good performance is demonstrated for 19 test problems by achieving rapid convergence to a solution from several widely separated starting points.

General-altitude transformations between geocentric and geodetic coordinates

Formulas for the general-altitude (height above the ellipsoid) transformation from geocentric to geodetic coordinates and vice versa are derived. The set of four formulas is expressed in each of two useful forms: series expansions in powers of the earth's flattening and series expansions in powers of the earth's eccentricity. The error incurred in these expansions is of the order of one part in 30 million.-

Real-time video compression algorithm for Hadamard transform processing

A real-time digital video processor using Hadamard transform techniques to reduce video bandwidth is described. The processor can be programmed with different parameters to investigate various algorithms for bandwidth compression. The processor is also adaptive in that it can select different parameter sets to tradeoff spatial resolution for temporal resolution in the regions of the picture that are moving. Algorithms used in programming the system are described along with results achieved at various levels of compression. The algorithms relate to spatial compression, temporal compression, and the adaptive selection of parameter sets.

Hadamard transform imager and imaging spectrometer

An imager and a spectrometric imager, which achieve multiplexing by the use of binary optical encoding masks, have been built and tested. The masks are based on orthogonal, pseudorandom digital codes derived from Hadamard matrices. The spatial (and/or spectral) data are therefore obtained in the form of a Hadamard transform of the spatial (and/or spectral) scene. Computer algorithms are used to decode the data and reconstruct images of the original scene. The hardware, algorithms processing and display facility are described. A number of spatial and spatial/spectral images, obtained in the laboratory, are presented.
