Topological Singularity Induced Chiral Kohn Anomaly in a Weyl Semimetal

The electron-phonon interaction (EPI) is instrumental in a wide variety of phenomena in solid-state physics, such as electrical resistivity in metals, carrier mobility, optical transition, and polaron effects in semiconductors, lifetime of hot carriers, transition temperature in BCS superconductors, and even spin relaxation in diamond nitrogen-vacancy centers for quantum information processing. However, due to the weak EPI strength, most phenomena have focused on electronic properties rather than on phonon properties. One prominent exception is the Kohn anomaly, where phonon softening can emerge when the phonon wave vector nests the Fermi surface of metals. In this paper, we report a new class of Kohn anomaly in a topological Weyl semimetal (WSM), predicted by field-theoretical calculations, and experimentally observed through inelastic x-ray and neutron scattering on WSM tantalum phosphide. Compared to the conventional Kohn anomaly, the Fermi surface in a WSM exhibits multiple topological singularities of Weyl nodes, leading to a distinct nesting condition with chiral selection, a power-law divergence, and non-negligible dynamical effects. Our work brings the concept of the Kohn anomaly into WSMs and sheds light on elucidating the EPI mechanism in emergent topological materials.

Origins of electronic bands in the antiferromagnetic topological insulator MnBi 2 Te 4

Despite the rapid progress in understanding the first intrinsic magnetic topological insulator MnBi 2 Te 4 , its electronic structure remains a topic under debates. In this work, we perform a thorough spectroscopic investigation into the electronic structure of MnBi 2 Te 4 via laser-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Through quantitative analysis, we estimate an upper bound of 3 meV for the gap size of the topological surface state. Furthermore, our circular dichroism measurements reveal band chiralities for both the topological surface state and quasi-2D bands, which can be well reproduced in a band hybridization model. A numerical simulation of energy-momentum dispersions based on a four-band model with an additional step potential near the surface provides a promising explanation for the origin of the quasi-2D bands. Our study represents a solid step forward in reconciling the existing controversies in the electronic structure of MnBi 2 Te 4 , and provides an important framework to understand the electronic structures of other relevant topological materials MnBi 2n Te 3n+1 .

Type-II Dirac cones and electron-phonon interaction in monolayer biphenylene from first-principles calculations

In this work, we report a first-principles investigation of electronic structure, topological bands, and electron-phonon interactions in metallic biphenylene sheets. Biphenylene is a recently synthesized sp 2 -bonded carbon allotrope. We find coupling of electrons at the Fermi surface to very high frequency carbon-derived phonons, analogous to superconducting MgB 2 . This leads to low-temperature weak coupling superconductivity due to an unusual combination of exceptionally large logarithmically averaged phonon frequency ω log =1369 K and moderate electron-phonon coupling. The electronic structure shows a two-band Fermi surface dominated by C p z orbitals and a pair of type-II tilted Dirac cones along the Γ-Y line at the Brillouin zone boundary. Berry curvature and edge-state calculations show that monolayer biphenylene is a two-dimensional $\mathbb{Z}$ 2 topological material. Thus, monolayer biphenylene is predicted to be a topological superconductor based on C p orbitals and high-frequency phonons.

Alloying vanadium in Mn Bi 2 Te 4 for robust ferromagnetic coupling and quantum anomalous Hall effect

The intrinsic antiferromagnetic (AFM) interlayer coupling in the two-dimensional magnetic topological insulator MnBi 2 Te 4 places a restriction on realizing a stable quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) [Y. Deng et al., Science 367, 895 (2020)]. Through density functional theory calculations, we demonstrate the possibility of tuning the AFM coupling to the ferromagnetic coupling in Mn Bi 2 Te 4 films by alloying about 50% V with Mn. As a result, the QAHE can be achieved without alternation with the even or odd septuple layers. This provides a practical strategy to get a robust QAHE in ultrathin Mn Bi 2 Te 4 films, rendering them attractive for technological innovations.

Surface Local Impurity Scattering as a Probe for Topological Kondo Insulators

Shortly after the discovery of topological band insulators, topological Kondo insulators (TKIs) is also theoretically predicted. The latter has ignited revival interest in the properties of Kondo insulators. Currently, the feasibility of topological nature in SmB 6 is intensively analyzed by several complementary probes. Here by starting with a minimal-orbital Anderson lattice model, the local electronic structure is explored in a Kondo insulator. It is showed that the two strong topological regimes sandwiching the weak topological regime give rise to a single Dirac cone, which is located near the center or corner of the surface Brillouin zone. It is further found that, when a single impurity is placed on the surface, low-energy resonance states are induced in the weak scattering limit for the strong TKI regimes and the resonance level moves monotonically across the hybridization gap with the strength of impurity scattering potential; while low energy states can only be induced in the unitary scattering limit for the weak TKI regime, where the resonance level moves universally toward the center of the hybridization gap. These impurity-induced low-energy quasiparticles will lead to characteristic signatures in scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy, which has recently found success in probing into exotic properties in heavy fermion systems.

Topological edge modes without symmetry in quasiperiodically driven spin chains

Here we construct an example of a 1d quasiperiodically driven spin chain whose edge states can coherently store quantum information, protected by a combination of localization, dynamics, and topology. In a sharp departure from topological phases in static and periodically driven (Floquet) spin chains, this model does not rely upon microscopic symmetry protection: Instead, the edge states are protected purely by emergent dynamical symmetries. We explore the dynamical signatures of this emergent dynamical symmetry-protected topological (EDSPT) order through exact numerics, time evolving block decimation, and analytic high-frequency expansion, finding evidence that the EDSPT is a stable dynamical phase protected by bulk many-body localization up to (at least) stretched-exponentially long timescales, and possibly beyond. We argue that EDSPTs are special to the quasiperiodically driven setting, and cannot arise in Floquet systems. Moreover, we find evidence of a type of boundary critical with no known static or Floquet analogue, in which the edge spin dynamics transition from quasiperiodic to chaotic, leading to bulk thermalization.

Diffusion energy barrier of Au on Bi 2 Se 3 : theory and experiment

The stability and diffusion of ultra-thin thermally deposited Au films on Bi 2 Se 3 was studied using scanning tunneling microscopy and density functional theory calculations. The Au/Bi 2 Se 3 interface is of interest as gold is predicted to provide excellent electrical contact while maintaining the spin-polarized characteristics of the electronic states in Bi 2 Se 3 that make the material attractive for spintronic applications. When deposited at room temperature, Au 10 covers the surface with tightly packed islands of nanometer scale dimension. The surface morphology is stable up to 400K. At this annealing temperature, Au atoms have sufficient energy to diffuse across the surface and aggregate into larger nanostructures. At 550K, the Bi 2 Se 3 surface is only sparsely covered, and the Au has formed clusters with length scales 5-10 times larger than the original islands formed at room temperature. Comparison of the experiment and first principle calculation lead to the conclusion that the diffusion energy barrier for Au on Bi 2 Se 3 is as high as 0.47 eV, 15 which is much larger than diffusion barriers on other van der Waals materials.

Braiding Majorana fermions and creating quantum logic gates with vortices on a periodic pinning structure

We show how vortices that support Majorana fermions when placed on a periodic pinning array can be used for vortex exchange and independent braiding by performing a series of specific moves with a probe tip. Using these braiding operations, we demonstrate realizations of a Hadamard and a CNOT gate. We specifically consider the first matching field at which there is one vortex per pinning site, and we show that there are two basic dynamic operations, move and exchange, from which basic braiding operations can be constructed in order to create specific logic gates. The periodic pinning array permits both control of the world lines of the vortices and freedom for vortex manipulation using a set of specific moves of the probe during which the probe tip strength and height remain unchanged. We measure the robustness of the different moves against thermal effects and show that the three different operations produce distinct force signatures on the moving tip.

Axion insulator state in ferromagnetically ordered CrI 3 /Bi 2 Se 3 /MnBi 2 Se 4 heterostructures

Ferromagnetic (FM) axion insulators may greatly simplify experimental explorations of the topological magnetoelectric effect, as the FM ordering can be stable in a broad range of magnetic field. Through density functional theory calculations and four-band model studies, we find that two-dimensional van der Waals FM CrI 3 and MnBi 2 Se 4 overlayers induce opposite-sign exchange fields in the topological surface states of Bi 2 Se 3 film when they are ferromagnetically ordered. As a consequence, the CrI 3 /Bi 2 Se 3 /MnBi 2 Se 4 heterostructure is a robust FM axion insulator, according to surface-resolved Berry curvature calculations. Our work opens up opportunities for the design of materials with the topological magnetoelectric effect.

Broken Luttinger theorem in the two-dimensional Fermi-Hubbard model

One of the fundamental questions about high-temperature cuprate superconductors is the size of the Fermi surface underlying the superconducting state. By analyzing the single-particle spectral function for the Fermi-Hubbard model as a function of repulsion U and chemical potential μ, we find that the Fermi surface in the normal state undergoes a transition from a large Fermi surface matching the Luttinger volume as expected in a Fermi liquid, to a Fermi surface that encloses fewer electrons that we dub the “Luttinger breaking” phase, as the Mott insulator is approached. This transition into a non-Fermi-liquid phase that violates the Luttinger count occurs at a critical density in the absence of any other broken symmetry. We obtain the Fermi-surface contour from the spectral weight A k (ω = 0) and from an analysis of the singularities of the Green's function Re G k (E = 0), calculated using determinantal quantum Monte Carlo and analytic continuation methods. We discuss our numerical results in connection with experiments on Hall measurements, scanning tunneling spectroscopy, and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy.

Gapless Criterion for Crystals from Effective Axion Field

Gapless criteria that can efficiently determine whether a crystal is gapless or not are particularly useful for identifying topological semimetals. In this work, we propose a sufficient gapless criterion for three-dimensional noninteracting crystals, based on the simplified expressions for the bulk average value of the static axion field. The brief logic is that two different simplified expressions give the same value in an insulator, and thus the gapless phase can be detected by the mismatch of them. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the gapless criterion in the magnetic systems with space groups 26 and 13, where mirror, glide, and inversion symmetries provide the simplified expressions. In particular, the gapless criterion can identify gapless phases that are missed by the symmetry-representation approach, as illustrated by space group 26. Our proposal serves as a guiding principle for future discovery of topological semimetals.

Optically Probing Tunable Band Topology in Atomic Monolayers

In many atomically thin materials, their optical absorption is dominated by excitonic transitions. It was recently found that optical selection rules in these materials are influenced by the band topology near the valleys. We propose that gate-controlled band ordering in a single atomic monolayer, through changes in the valley winding number and excitonic transitions, can be probed in helicity-resolved absorption and photoluminescence. Here, this predicted tunable band topology is confirmed by combining an effective Hamiltonian and a Bethe-Salpeter equation for an accurate description of excitons, with first-principles calculations suggesting its realization in Sb-based monolayers.

Disentangling the Competing Mechanisms of Light-Induced Anomalous Hall Conductivity in Three-Dimensional Dirac Semimetal

We experimentally elucidate the origin of the anomalous Hall conductivity in a three-dimensional Dirac semimetal, Cd 3 As 2 , driven by circularly polarized light. Using time-resolved terahertz Faraday rotation spectroscopy, we determine the transient Hall conductivity spectrum with special attention to its sign. Our results clearly show the dominance of direct photocurrent generation assisted by the terahertz electric field. The contribution from the Floquet-Weyl nodes is found to be minor when the driving light is in resonance with interband transitions. Here, we develop a generally applicable classification of microscopic mechanisms of light-induced anomalous Hall conductivity.

Higher Vortexability: Zero-Field Realization of Higher Landau Levels

The rise of moiré materials has led to experimental realizations of integer and FCIs in small or vanishing magnetic fields. At the same time, a set of minimal conditions sufficient to guarantee an Abelian fractional state in a flat band were identified, namely “ideal" or “vortexable" quantum geometry. Such vortexable bands share essential features with the LLL, while excluding the need for more fine-tuned aspects such as flat Berry curvature. A natural and important generalization is to ask if such conditions can be extended to capture the quantum geometry of higher Landau levels, particularly the first (1LL), where non-Abelian states at ν = 1/2, 2/5 are known to be competitive. The possibility of realizing these states at zero magnetic field, and perhaps even more exotic ones, could become a reality if we could identify the essential structure of the 1LL in Chern bands. In this work, we introduce a precise definition of 1LL quantum geometry, along with a figure of merit that measures how closely a given band approaches the 1LL. Furthermore, periodically strained Bernal graphene is shown to realize such a 1LL structure even in zero magnetic field.

First-principles study of magnetic states and the anomalous Hall conductivity of M Nb 3 S 6 ( M = Co, Fe, Mn, and Ni)

Here, inspired by the observation of the extremely large anomalous Hall effect in the absence of applied magnetic fields or uniform magnetization in CoNb 3 S 6 [Nat. Commun. 9, 3280 (2018); Phys. Rev. Research 2, 023051 (2020)], we perform a first-principles study of this and related compounds of the MNb 3 S 6 type with different transition metal M ions to determine their magnetic orders and the anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC). We find that noncoplanar antiferromagnetic ordering is favored relative to collinear or coplanar order in the case of M = Co, Fe, and Ni, while ferromagnetic ordering is favored in MnNb 3 S 6 at low temperatures. The AHC in these materials with noncoplanar spin ordering can reach about e 2 /h per crystalline layer, while being negligible for coplanar and collinear cases. We also find that the AHC depends sensitively on doping and reaches a maximum for intermediate values of the local spin exchange potential between 0.3 and 0.8 eV. Our AHC results are consistent with the reported Hall measurements in CoNb 3 S 6 and suggest a possibility of similarly large anomalous Hall effects in related compounds.

Charge transport in topological graphene nanoribbons and nanoribbon heterostructures

Although it is generally accepted that structural parameters like width, shape, and edge structure crucially affect the electronic characteristics of graphene nanoribbons (GNRs), the exact relationship between geometry and charge transport remains largely unexplored. Here, in this paper, we present in situ through-transport measurements of various topological GNRs and GNR heterostructures by lifting the ribbon with the tip of a scanning tunneling microscope. At the same time, we develop a comprehensive transport model that enables us to understand various features, such as obscuring of localized states in through transport, the effect of topology on transport, as well as negative differential conductance in heterostructures with localized electronic modes. The combined experimental and theoretical efforts described in this paper serve to elucidate general charge transport phenomena in GNRs and GNR heterostructures.
