Cavitation Erosion of Copper, Brass, Aluminum and Titanium Alloys in Mineral Oil

The variations of the mean depth of penetration, the mean depth rate of penetration, MDRP, the pit diameter 2a and depth h due to cavitation attack on Al 6061-T6, Cu, brass of composition Cu-35Zn-3Pb and Ti-5A1-2.5Sn are presented. The experiments are conducted in a mineral oil of viscosity 110 CS using a magnetostrictive oscillator of 20 kHz frequency. Based on MDRP on the materials, it is found that Ti-5Al-2.5Sn exhibits cavitation erosion resistance which is two orders of magnitude higher than the other three materials. The values of h/a are the largest for copper and decreased with brass, titanium, and aluminum. Scanning electron microscope studies show that extensive slip and cross slip occurred on the surface prior to pitting and erosion. Twinning is also observed on copper and brass.

On implementing self-checking microprocessors

A simple and general model of the interfaces and check circuits used for comparing and detecting faults in a pair of 16-bit processors is described, and problems encountered in the application of TI 9900 processors are discussed. The greatest incompatibility is found to lie between the rollback structures of the CPUs and the interface and check logic (ICL) model. The ICL model generates a reset when an error is detected, and a rollback is expected to occur when it is released. The TI 9900 requires a reset of minimum duration, and after release goes through an initialization cycle, obtains rollback parameters from fixed memory locations, and executes the rollback, consistent with the ICL. The ICL is relatively simple, having a complexity equivalent to fewer than 1000 gates.

The mid-ultraviolet spectrum of Epsilon Aurigae

An LTE synthetic spectrum with Te = 7800 K and log g = 1 has been computed for the 2455-to-3230 A range of Epsilon Aurigae (F0 1a). This has been compared with the spectra observed with 0.2 A resolution with the IUE experiment and with 0.1 A resolution with the BUSS experiment. As a consequence of this comparison, identifications and abundance values have been obtained. Ions definitely present include Mg I, Mg II, Al I, Al II, Si I, Ca II, Ti II, V II, Cr II, Mn II, Fe I, Fe II, Co II, Ni I, Ni II, Zr II. Ions which are possibly present include Ti III, Mn I, Fe III, Nb II, Mo I. The abundances are nearly 10 times the solar values for the iron group, with the exception of Fe, which has solar abundance. The abundances of the other elements are solar.

Interstellar absorption toward HD 14633

Observations are reported of optical interstellar absorption lines of Ti II, Ca II, and Na I in the spectrum of HD 14633, a probable runaway O star ejected from the Perseus spiral arm. Unusually high gas-phase abundances of the normally depleted elements Ca and Ti are found in three high-velocity interstellar line components; the light paths to only a few other stars are known to show a comparably strong Routly-Spitzer effect. The greatly reduced heavy-element depletions in these parcels of gas presumably reflect the disruption of interstellar grains in gas which may be located in the lower galactic halo at an absolute value of 2 of about 1 kpc.

An analytical comparison of two wing structures for Mach 5 cruise airplanes

Mach 5 cruise research conducted by NASA is related to aerodynamics, propulsion, and structures. The study of structures includes the propulsion system, fuselage, and wings. Various studies have shown that the achievement of adequate range is largely dependent on a low structural mass fraction. The present investigation is concerned with a study of two wing structure configurations for Mach 5 aircraft. An uprated version (Ti-6242 replacing B-120 titanium) of the YF-12/SR-71 wing structure is considered. The B-120 titanium structure represents the current art of high speed aircraft wing structures. The YF-12 wing structure was designed about 20 years ago when the analytical methods for calculating thermal stresses were limited. The second wing structural configuration studied in the present investigation also used Ti-6242 materials but replaced the corrugated-beaded panels with diffusion bonded honeycomb-core sandwich panels, and replaced the z-stiffened shear webs with sine-wave stiffened shear webs.

Ni isotopic compositions in Allende and other meteorites

A new technique for high-precision isotopic analyses of Ni is applied to terrestrial samples, Allende inclusions, and materials from other meteorites. It is noted that most of the Allende inclusions analyzed here were previously reported to contain isotopically anomalous Ti. In contrast, the Ni isotopic abundances are found to be indistinguishable from normal within presently obtainable precision, with only one possible exception. The latter inclusion has been shown by others to contain a significantly fractionated magnesium isotopic pattern of 9 parts per thousand/amu. A normal Ni isotopic pattern has also been observed for the chromite/carbon fraction of an Allende acid residue, which is known to have heavy noble gases of highly anomalous isotopic composition. All other meteoritic samples analyzed reveal normal isotopic compositions of Ni; no evidence for effects from now extinct Fe-60 could be detected. Despite ubiquitous isotopic anomalies in Ti from normal Allende inclusions there is no signature of isotopic variations in Ni from the same samples.

Origin of lunar meteorite ALHA 81005 - Clues from the presence of terrae clasts and a very low-titanium mare basalt clast

Attention is given to the endogenous (or primary) lithologies of the lunar crust that can be inferred from the terrae clasts and to the significance of a fragment of very low titanium (VLT) mare basalt in thin section, ALHA 81005,9. Fragments of the norite and harzburgite have mineral compositions similar to that of ferroan anorthosite, and a clast of ferroan anorthosite has pyroxenes with lower molar Mg/(Mg+Fe) than in known pristine rocks. It is inferred that the Mg-suite protoliths for the clasts of intermediate composition are magnesian troctolites, spinel troctolites, and feldspathic lherzolites. Whereas clasts of these lithologies are not present in ALHA 81005,9, mineral fragments from them are. Based on the molar Mg/(Mg+Fe) ratio and Cr content of its pyroxenes, a single basaltic clast is determined to be of mare origin. The composition of its plagioclase and the molar Ti/(Ti+Cr) ratios of its pyroxenes suggest that the clast is a fragment of VLT mare basalt. It is noted that if this basalt is significantly younger than the last basin-forming impact event, which was approximately 3.9 x 10 to the 9th years ago, then its presence probably constrains the source crater for ALHA 81005 to be within a hundred kilometers of a VLT mare basalt flow.

Thermal oxidative degradation reactions of perfluoroalklethers

The objective of this contract was to investigate the mechanisms operative in thermal and thermal oxidative degradation of Fomblin Z and hexafluoropropene oxide derived fluids and the effect of alloys and additives upon these processes. The nature of arrangements responsible for the inherent thermal oxidative instability of the Fomblin Z fluids has not been established. It was determined that this behavior was not associated with hydrogen end-groups or peroxy linkages. The degradation rate of these fluids at elevated temperatures in oxidizing atmospheres was found to be dependent on the surface/volume ratio. Once a limiting ratio was reached, a steady rate appeared to be attained. Based on elemental analysis and oxygen consumption data, -CF2OCF2CF2O-, not -CF2CF2O-, is one of the major arrangements present. The action of the M-50 and Ti(4 Al, 4 Mn) alloys was found to be much more drastic in the case of Fomblin Z fluids than that observed for the hexalfuoropropane oxide derived materials. The effectiveness of antioxidation/anticorrosion additives, P-3 and phospha-s-triazine, in the presence of metal alloys was very limited at 316 C; at 288 C the additives arrested almost completely the fluid degradation. The phospha-s-triazine appeared to be at least twice as effective as the P-3 compound; it also protected the coupon better. The Ti(4 Al, 4 Mn) alloy degraded the fluid mainly by chain scission processes; this took place to a much lesser degree with M-50.

Low-Temperature Forming of Beta Titanium Alloys

Low cost methods for titanium structural fabrication using advanced cold-formable beta alloys were investigated for application in a Mach 2.7 supersonic cruise vehicle. This work focuses on improving processing and structural efficiencies as compared with standard hot formed and riveted construction of alpha-beta alloy sheet structure. Mechanical property data and manufacturing parameters were developed for cold forming, brazing, welding, and processing Ti-15V-3Cr-3Sn-3Al sheet, and Ti-3Al-8V-6Cr-4Zr on a more limited basis. Cost and structural benefits were assessed through the fabrication and evaluation of large structural panels. The feasibility of increasing structural efficiency of beta titanium structure by selective reinforcement with metal matrix composite was also explored.

Abundancies of Ni, Cr, CO and major elements in the silicate portion of the Moon: Constraints from primary lunar magmas

The lunar volcanic glasses are samples of primary magnas derived by partial melting of the Moon mantle. The twenty-seven varieties of glass define three linear arrays having nearly constant Mg/Si ratios. The low-Ti magmas in each array approach the chondritic Ti/Al ratio. In addition, the Ca/Al ration in these low-Ti magmas trends toward the chrondritid value as one proceeds from array 1 through array 3. Using the chemistries of these primary magmas, as well as the assumption that the Moon possesses chondritic Ca/Al/Ti/Mg ratios, the silicate composition of the Moon has been estimated. The implications of these results are discussed.

Ccds: Their Cause and Cure

Charge coupled devices (CCDs) have opened new horizons in the optical astronomy. Most of the presently existing astronomical CCD systems are oriented and designed primarily for work on faint objects. The use of CCDs for high precision work on bright objects remains to be explored. Issues and problems specific to (CCDs) are covered in detail. The important structural characteristics of CCDs are that they are integrating, self scanned, photon counting (one selection for each detected photon), solid state devices. The typical physical sizes are of the order of 1 - 3 cm, and typical raster formats of 500x500 pixels (TI), 320x512 (RCA), 385x576 (GEC), 800x800 (TI), and 1500x1500 (GEC) should be available soon. Typical (and optimal) operating temperatures are around -100 C, with liquid N2 as the most common coolant. Some CCDs are physically warped. This causes focus variations across the surface, which amount to a spatially variable PSF. Other relevant properties of CCDs as detectors and a comparison with some other astronomical detectors are given.

Effect of reduction of strategic Columbium addition in 718 Alloy on the structure and properties

A series of alloys was developed having a base composition similar to Inconel 718, with reduced Cb levels of 3.00 and 1.10 wt% Cb. Substitutions of 3.0% W, 3.0W + 0.9V or Mo increased from 3.0% to 5.8% were made for the Cb in these alloys. Two additional alloys, one containing 3.49% Cb and 1.10% Ti and another containing 3.89% Cb and 1.29% Ti were also studied. Tensile properties at rooom and elevated temperatures, stress-rupture tests, and an analysis of extracted phases were carried out for each of the alloys. Additions of solid solution elements to a reduced Cb alloy had no significant effect on the properties of the alloys under either process condition. The solution and age alloys with substitutions of 1.27% i at 3.89% Cb had tensile properties similar top hose of the original alloy and stress-rupture properties superior to the original alloy. The improved stress-rupture properties were the result of significant precipitation of Ni3Ti-gamma prime in the alloy, which is more stable than gamma' at the elevated temperatures. At lower temperatures, the new alloy benefits from gamma' strengthening. With more precise control and proper processing, the reduced Cb direct-age alloy could substitute for Alloy 718 in high strength applications.

Fracture surface analysis in composite and titanium bonding: Part 1: Titanium bonding

Fractured lap shear Ti 6-4 adherends bonded with polyphenyquinoxaline (PPQ) and polysulfone were analyzed. The effects of adherend pretreatment, stress level, thermal aging, anodizing voltage, and modified adhesive of Ti 6-4 adherend bonded with PPQ on lap shear strength were studied. The effect of adherend pretreatment on lap shear strength was investigated for PS samples. Results of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) used to study the surface topography and surface composition are also discussed.

Optical interstellar absorption lines toward 29 stars

Observations of optical interstellar absorption lines of Ti II, Ca II, and/or Na I acquired at an instrumental resolution typically of 5.6 km/s are reported for 29 stars. The data were recorded primarily with a Digicon detector and achieve 2 sigma detection limits generally near an equivalent width of 1 mA. The primary purpose of the observations is, in combination with previously published data, to provide a comprehensive, high-sensitivity survey of Ti II, Ca II, and Na I absorption at all velocities, toward 41 stars for which a correspondingly complete survey of certain ultraviolet interstellar lines also is available. New high-velocity optical interstellar lines at /v(LSR)/ greater than about 25 km/s are found toward four of the 29 stars.

Metallurgical and mechanical phenomena due to rubbing of titanium against sintered powder Nichrome

Metallurgical and mechanical changes occurring during high-speed rubbing of Ti-6Al-4V blade specimens against an abradable Nichrome aircraft engine seal material were studied using optical microscopy, electron microscopy, and microhardness techniques. Evidence of temperatures above the beta transus of Ti-6Al-4V (1000 C) and of thermal hardening was found on blade tips that exhibited undesirable abrading characteristics resulting in high forces of interaction, high temperatures, and smearing. The material within the layer of the corresponding seals was found to be work-hardened to a depth of about 0.1 mm and showed evidence of densification extending to a depth of about 0.5 mm below the rubbed surface. Wear particles produced by rub interactions that generated cleanly abraded seal surfaces were found to be several times larger than those produced during interactions which showed evidence of surface smearing and seal densification.

Role of hydroxide impurities in the thermoluminescent behavior of lithium fluoride

The influence of OH ion impurities on thermoluminescent sensitivity and supralinearity in LiF:Mg, Ti is analyzed. Available evidence is shown to be consistant with the presence of Ti-OH and Mg-OH complexes. The track interaction model is used to explain the data, with competing centers decreasing sensitivity and supralinearity at high concentrations.

Transient processes in combustion of single submillimeter metal droplets

A laser was used to ignite Al, Zr, Ti and Hf droplets in separate trials to study metal droplet combustion in air. The burning was recorded with high speed film at high magnification. Al was found to flash vaporize, melt, surface oxidize, revaporize, then combust. All species burned with a vapor diffusion flame surrounded by an oxide condensation front. The Zr, Ti and Hf droplets grew by condensation, coalesced, then convected toward the perimeter of the condensation zone. It is expected that the data will serve as bases for a theoretical vapor diffusion model. Finally, the introduction of a transverse acoustic field was observed to have no effect on either the luminosity or combustion zone geometry.

Fabrication and evaluation of superplastically formed/weld-brazed corrugated compression panels with beaded webs

A study was made to investigate the feasibility of superplastically forming corrugated panels with beaded webs and to demonstrate the structural integrity of these panels by testing. The test panels in the study consist of superplastically formed titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V half-hat elements that are joined by weld-brazing to titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V caps to form either single-corrugation compression panels or multiple-corrugation compression panels. Stretching and subsequent thinning of the titanium sheet during superplastic forming is reduced by approximately 35 percent with a shallow half-hat die concept instead of a deep die concept and results in a more uniform thickness across the beaded webs. The complete panels are tested in end compression at room temperature and the results compared with analysis. The heavily loaded panels failed at loads approaching the yield strength of the titanium material. At maximum load, the caps wrinkled locally accompanied with separation of the weld-braze joint in the wrinkle. None of the panels tested, however, failed catastrophically in the weld-braze joint. Experimental test results are in good agreement with structural analysis of the panels.
