Design of a 915 MHz conduction-cooled cryomodule

High-power, compact, continuous-wave (CW) linear electron accelerators with beam energies of up to 10 MeV are being considered for possible industrial applications. Conduction-cooled, superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) technology allows operating such machines at high electrical efficiency, thereby reducing the operating cost significantly. A prototype conduction-cooled SRF cryomodule has been designed and components are currently being manufactured. The cryomodule features a two-cell, 915 MHz SRF cavity, two cryocoolers, a fundamental power coupler, two magnetic shields, a thermal shield and warm-to-cold transitions. The cryomodule has been designed to be able to provide an energy gain of 3.5 MeV to a CW electron beam with a current of 5 mA. This contribution focusses on thermal and mechanical design aspects of the cryomodule.

Performance of reverse osmosis membrane with large feed pressure fluctuations from a wave-driven desalination system

Wave-driven desalination systems are proposed water treatment systems that involve reverse osmosis of seawater powered directly by wave motion. Such a configuration would result in drastic feed pressure fluctuations. For a technology conventionally operated with a constant feed condition, the effect of these variable pressures on membrane integrity and performance is unknown. Here, experiments were conducted with spiral wound membranes coupled to a system capable of producing feed pressure fluctuations of more than 400 psi. Feed composition included 5, 20, and 35 g/L NaCl, and a synthetic seawater at normal and 1.5x concentration. The variable feed conditions included sine-like pressure waves swings of 200-500 and 500-900 psi with frequencies of 1.25, 7.5, and 12 waves/min, and a model-generated random waveform. Between each wave experiment we performed membrane integrity tests at 650 psi and 25 g/L NaCl feed, which showed a 7.4% drop in the membrane's water permeability coefficient, an 18.4% flux decline, and more than 99% salt rejection over 1770 h of cumulative experimental time. Analysis of permeate samples showed high salt rejection. In general, variable feed pressure had no significant deleterious effect on membrane integrity or performance.

Assessment of Wind Energy Resource Potential for Future Human Missions to Mars

Energy sustainability and redundancy for surface habitats, life support systems and scientific instrumentation represent one of the highest-priority issues for future crewed missions to Mars. However, power sources utilized for the current class of robotic missions to Mars may be potentially dangerous near human surface habitats (for example, nuclear) or lack stability on diurnal or seasonal timescales (for example, solar) that cannot be easily compensated for by power storage. Here, we evaluate the power potential for wind turbines as an alternative energy resource on the Mars surface. Using a state-of-the-art Mars global climate model, we analyse the total planetary Martian wind potential and calculate its spatial and temporal variability. We find that wind speeds at some proposed landing sites are sufficiently fast to provide a stand-alone or complementary energy source to solar or nuclear power. While several regions show promising wind energy resource potential, other regions of scientific interest can be discarded based on the natural solar and wind energy potential alone. We demonstrate that wind energy compensates for diurnal and seasonal reductions in solar power particularly in regions of scientific merit in the midlatitudes and during regional dust storms. Critically, proposed turbines stabilize power production when combined with solar arrays, increasing the percent time that power exceeds estimated mission requirements from ~40% for solar arrays alone to greater than 60-90% across a broad fraction of the Mars surface. We encourage additional study aimed at advancing wind turbine technology to operate efficiently under Mars conditions and to extract more power from Mars winds.

The field of human building interaction for convergent research and innovation for intelligent built environments

Human-Building Interaction (HBI) is a convergent field that represents the growing complexities of the dynamic interplay between human experience and intelligence within built environments. This paper provides core definitions, research dimensions, and an overall vision for the future of HBI as developed through consensus among 25 interdisciplinary experts in a series of facilitated workshops. Three primary areas contribute to and require attention in HBI research: humans (human experiences, performance, and well-being), buildings (building design and operations), and technologies (sensing, inference, and awareness). Three critical interdisciplinary research domains intersect these areas: control systems and decision making, trust and collaboration, and modeling and simulation. Finally, at the core, it is vital for HBI research to center on and support equity, privacy, and sustainability. Compelling research questions are posed for each primary area, research domain, and core principle. State-of-the-art methods used in HBI studies are discussed, and examples of original research are offered to illustrate opportunities for the advancement of HBI research.

Federated benchmarking of medical artificial intelligence with MedPerf

Medical artificial intelligence (AI) has tremendous potential to advance healthcare by supporting and contributing to the evidence-based practice of medicine, personalizing patient treatment, reducing costs, and improving both healthcare provider and patient experience. Unlocking this potential requires systematic, quantitative evaluation of the performance of medical AI models on large-scale, heterogeneous data capturing diverse patient populations. Here, to meet this need, we introduce MedPerf, an open platform for benchmarking AI models in the medical domain. MedPerf focuses on enabling federated evaluation of AI models, by securely distributing them to different facilities, such as healthcare organizations. This process of bringing the model to the data empowers each facility to assess and verify the performance of AI models in an efficient and human-supervised process, while prioritizing privacy. We describe the current challenges healthcare and AI communities face, the need for an open platform, the design philosophy of MedPerf, its current implementation status and real-world deployment, our roadmap and, importantly, the use of MedPerf with multiple international institutions within cloud-based technology and on-premises scenarios. Finally, we welcome new contributions by researchers and organizations to further strengthen MedPerf as an open benchmarking platform.

Sequence Impedance Modeling of Grid-Forming Inverters

Grid-forming control of inverter-based resources has been identified as a critical technology for operating power systems with high levels of inverter-based resources. This paper presents the sequence impedance modeling of a grid-forming inverter to evaluate its small-signal stability properties. Droop control structure is implemented to control the inverter in grid-forming mode, and the impact of individual controller on the inverter impedance characteristics is discussed. The developed sequence impedance model is compared with that of the grid-following inverter. It is found from the developed sequence impedance models that grid-forming inverters are less prone to harmonic resonance problems during operation with weaker grids. The developed models are validated using PSCAD simulations.

Magnetic Field Mapping of a 2.5 T Fixed-Field HTS Gantry Magnet for Proton Therapy

We present results from testing a high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet prototype for proton therapy. This magnet is specifically designed for a novel rotating gantry capable of delivering the entire proton beam energy range (70225 MeV) while maintaining a fixed magnetic field in the superconducting magnets. The gantry layout simplifies the magnet design, enabling the use of straight, flat racetrack Bi-2223 (DI-BSCCO) coil technology and operation at higher temperatures (1015 K). The magnet has a non-linear field distribution for bending and focusing the proton beams. To validate this feature, we developed a system for measuring the magnetic field distribution in the magnet aperture. We present the design of this hall probe array and experimental results from two different magnet tests at 4.2 K in a liquid helium bath. These results are compared with the simulated field distribution and discussed in the context of the required field quality for the application.

Digital holography for real-time non-invasive monitoring of larval fish at power plant intakes

Effective evaluation of technological and operational approaches to reduce entrainment of marine organisms at cooling water intake structures (CWIS) requires accurate organism-sensing systems. Current detection methods lead to large temporal data gaps, require tedious manual analysis, and are fatal to organisms. In this report we describe integrating deep learning with a non-lethal, non-intrusive imaging method—digital holography—to rapidly detect fish larvae. Laboratory experiments demonstrated that the instrument could successfully image fish larvae at flow rates exceeding ranges seen in CWIS. Holograms of two fish larvae species, in the presence of bubbles and detritus, were collected to build a large database for training a lightweight convolutional neural network. The model achieves 97% extraction accuracy in quantifying larvae, and distinguishing them from other particles, including detritus and bubbles, when applied to a dataset of manually classified images, exceeding previous metrics for non-lethal, accurate, and real-time detection. These results demonstrate the potential of in situ holographic imaging for monitoring endangered larval fish species at power plant intake structures, and for high-fidelity, real-time applications in monitoring aquatic ichthyoplankton.

Digital Twin Technology (“Morpheus”) for Optimized Building Operations [SWR-22-74]

The electrification of buildings is an important step to reducing greenhouse gas emissions across all industries. The management of increasingly electrified buildings is a complex pursuit, and there remains a need for cost-effective software capable of handling the computational burden required of such complexity. Through a partnership with Dallas Fort Worth (DFW) Airport, researchers at NREL have developed a digital twin modeling framework to optimize building operations, called Morpheus. Pairing predictive control with automatic fault detection and diagnostics, Morpheus decreases energy expenditures, costs, and faults for large facilities. Additionally, Morpheus employs artificial intelligence to continuously improve its performance using information provided by sensor systems, human experts with deep industry domain knowledge, and even from other similar machines or fleets of machines. Coupling this novel energy-management software with other digital twins, such as NREL’s Athena software for mobility operations, enables robust decision-making for asset and space management. The implementation of Morpheus at DFW has resulted in significantly improved HVAC system operations and reduced both peak power and overall energy consumption. This enhanced functionality comes at a more affordable price than previously developed digital twins and can be customized for other facilities’ geometries to provide optimal, individualized control of a facility’s energy consumption.
