C-HER Metadata Overview: Approach, Standards, and Rigor for the Centralized Health and Exposomic Resource

The Centralized Health and Exposomic Resource (C-HER) unifies environmental, demographic, geographic, and health-related data for exposomic research. The source data differ in format, geographic coverage, time period, resolution, terminology, and documentation. We use a common metadata framework to describe those differences and to record how each data resource has been processed, documented, and ingested. This document relates only to the C-HER metadata framework. It explains the information that is recorded for each resource, the standards used to organize that information, the conditions for metadata completeness, and the relationship between metadata and quality review. It is intended for those who need to understand what C-HER metadata communicates and how it supports appropriate use of the data. It is not an implementation specification or procedure. It does not document the database schema, source code, deployment configuration, transformation algorithms, or dataset-specific QA/QC thresholds. Those materials are maintained separately.

Nominal and adversarial synthetic PMU data for standard IEEE test systems

GridSTAGE (Spatio-Temporal Adversarial scenario GEneration) is a framework for the simulation of adversarial scenarios and the generation of multivariate spatio-temporal data in cyber-physical systems. GridSTAGE is developed based on Matlab and leverages Power System Toolbox (PST) where the evolution of the power network is governed by nonlinear differential equations. Using GridSTAGE, one can create several event scenarios that correspond to several operating states of the power network by enabling or disabling any of the following: faults, AGC control, PSS control, exciter control, load changes, generation changes, and different types of cyber-attacks. Standard IEEE bus system data is used to define the power system environment. GridSTAGE emulates the data from PMU and SCADA sensors. The rate of frequency and location of the sensors can be adjusted as well. Detailed instructions on generating data scenarios with different system topologies, attack characteristics, load characteristics, sensor configuration, control parameters are available in the Github repository - https://github.com/pnnl/GridSTAGE. There is no existing adversarial data-generation framework that can incorporate several attack characteristics and yield adversarial PMU data. The GridSTAGE framework currently supports simulation of False Data Injection attacks (such as a ramp, step, random, trapezoidal, multiplicative, replay, freezing) and Denial of Service attacks (such as time-delay, packet-loss) on PMU data. Furthermore, it supports generating spatio-temporal time-series data corresponding to several random load changes across the network or corresponding to several generation changes. A Koopman mode decomposition (KMD) based algorithm to detect and identify the false data attacks in real-time is proposed in https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/9303022. Machine learning-based predictive models are developed to capture the dynamics of the underlying power system with a high level of accuracy under various operating conditions for IEEE 68 bus system. The corresponding machine learning models are available at https://github.com/pnnl/grid_prediction.

Neutrino Non-Standard Interactions: Complementarity between LHC and Oscillation Experiments

We investigate the complementarity between LHC searches and neutrino experiments in probing neutrino non-standard interactions. Our study spans the theoretical frameworks of effective field theory, simplified model and an illustrative UV completion, highlighting the synergies and distinctive features in all cases. We show that besides constraining the allowed NSI parameter space, the LHC data can break important degeneracies present in oscillation experiments such as DUNE, while the latter play an important role in probing light and weakly coupled physics undetectable at the LHC. This talk is based on results presented in hep-ph 2003.03383 [1].

Standard Operating Protocol for Ion-Exchange Capacity of Anion Exchange Membranes

Ion-exchange capacity (IEC) is the measure of a material’s capability to displace ions formerly incorporated within its structure. IEC is a key feature of anion-exchange membranes (AEM), as it determines the AEM’s ability to conduct the ions required to sustain the electrochemical reactions where they are utilized. As an intrinsic property, measuring the IEC accurately is essential to study AEMs and understand their performance within devices. In this method article, a facile and accurate standard operating procedure (SOP) to measure the IEC of AEMs is proposed. When compared to conventional acid-base back-titration or Mohr titration, the proposed method combines the fast reaction between silver and halide ions and the accuracy of the potentiometric titration, providing a convenient and precise protocol for researchers in the field.

Standardization and best practices in single-cell testing for liquid alkaline water electrolysis

The increasing demand for efficient and sustainable hydrogen production has driven significant advancements in water electrolysis technologies. Among these, liquid alkaline water electrolysis (LAWE) stands out for its cost-effectiveness and scalability. This manuscript establishes best practices and standardized testing procedures for single-cell LAWE, focusing on the use of nickel foam as both anode and cathode substrates, while incorporating catalysts such as nickel-iron layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) as the anode material and nickel-molybdenum on carbon (NiMo/C) as the cathode material. By providing detailed guidelines on material preparation, cell assembly, and performance evaluation, this work offers a comprehensive framework to improve reproducibility and ensure consistency. The results demonstrate that applying these best practices minimizes variability across different laboratories and experimental setups, laying the groundwork for more robust comparisons and accelerating progress in LAWE research.
