Embodiments relate to an operating system coupled to and controlling at least one Distributed Energy Resource (DER) in a smart grid and includes an electricity distribution network and a 2-dimensional Extremum Seeking (2D-ES) controller coupled to network. The electricity distribution network has first and second inputs and one output and maps all active power and reactive power inputs to the smart grid providing measurements of an objective function. The 2D-ES controller controls the DER and includes an active power loop and a reactive power loop. The active power loop is in communication with the first input and the output, governs active power contribution, and receives measurements of the objective function which contain static and oscillatory components. The reactive power loop is in communication with the second input and the output, governs reactive power contribution, and receives measurements of the objective function which contain static and oscillatory components.
A system or method for a magnetic self-aligning coupling device for a fiber optic cable. The device includes a first end coupling comprising a first magnet and a second magnet. Both magnets include a mating surface and an annular ring defining an axial aperture. The aperture receives a distal end of a segment of fiber optic cable in a tight fit. The fiber optic cable has an exterior sleeve and a fiber core. The fiber core of the first segment and the second segment of the fiber optic cable are axially aligned by magnetic force in the first and second apertures to create a continuous fiber optic path. A method for detecting a security breach of a door using the self-aligning couplings is also described.

The switching parameters and device performance of memristors are predominately determined by their mobile species and matrix materials. Devices with oxygen or oxygen vacancies as the mobile species usually exhibit a great retention but also need a relatively high switching current (e.g., >30 mu A), while devices with Ag or Cu as cation mobile species do not require a high switching current but usually show a poor retention. Here, Ru is studied as a new type of mobile species for memristors to achieve low switching current, fast speed, good reliability, scalability, and analog switching property simultaneously. An electrochemical metallization-like memristor with a stack of Pt/Ta2O5/Ru is developed. Migration of Ru ions is revealed by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy mapping and in situ transmission electron microscopy within a sub-10 nm active device area before and after switching. The results open up a new avenue to engineer memristors for desired properties.
A switching circuit for a current source inverter includes a first inverter leg, a second inverter leg, and a controller. The first inverter leg includes a first reverse-voltage-blocking (RB) switch, a second RB switch, and a third RB switch that are connected in series between a first bus line and a second bus line. The second inverter leg includes a fourth RB switch, a fifth RB switch, and a sixth RB switch are connected in series between the first bus line and the second bus line. The controller is configured to control a switch between an on-state and an off-state for each RB switch. When in the on-state, a reverse voltage is blocked by a respective RB switch, and a current with a positive polarity is conducted through the respective RB switch. When in the off-state, a voltage and the current are blocked by the respective RB switch.
