Disintegration of Long-period Comet C/2019 Y4 (ATLAS). I. Hubble Space Telescope Observations

The near-Sun comet C/2019 Y4 (ATLAS) is the first member of a long-period comet group observed to disintegrate well before perihelion. Here we present our investigation into this disintegration event using images obtained in a three-day Hubble Space Telescope campaign. We identify two fragment clusters produced by the initial disintegration event, corresponding to fragments C/2019 Y4-A and C/2019 Y4-B identified in ground-based data. These two clusters started with similar integrated brightness but exhibit different evolutionary behavior. C/2019 Y4-A was much shorter-lived compared to C/2019 Y4-B and showed signs of significant mass loss and changes in size distribution throughout the three-day campaign. The cause of the initial fragmentation is undetermined by the limited evidence but crudely compatible with either the spin-up disruption of the nucleus or runaway sublimation of subsurface supervolatile ices, either of which would lead to the release of a large amount of gas as inferred from the significant bluing of the comet observed shortly before its disintegration. Gas can only be produced by the sublimation of volatile ices, which must have survived at least one perihelion passage at a perihelion distance of q = 0.25 au. We speculate that Comet ATLAS is derived from the ice-rich interior of a nonuniform, kilometer-wide progenitor that split during its previous perihelion. This suggests that comets down to a few kilometers in diameter can still possess complex, nonuniform interiors that can protect ices against intense solar heating.

Planets Across Space and Time (PAST). II. Catalog and Analyses of the LAMOST–Gaia–Kepler Stellar Kinematic Properties

The Kepler telescope has discovered over 4000 planets (candidates) by searching ~200,000 stars over a wide range of distance (order of kpc) in our Galaxy. Characterizing the kinematic properties (e.g., Galactic component membership and kinematic age) of these Kepler targets (including the planet candidate hosts) is the first step toward studying Kepler planets in the Galactic context, which will reveal fresh insights into planet formation and evolution. In this paper, the second part of the Planets Across the Space and Time (PAST) series, by combining the data from the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) and Gaia and then applying the revised kinematic methods from PAST I, we present a catalog of kinematic properties (i.e., Galactic positions, velocities, and the relative membership probabilities among the thin disk, thick disk, Hercules stream, and the halo) as well as other basic stellar parameters for 35,835 Kepler stars. Further analyses of the LAMOST–Gaia–Kepler catalog demonstrate that our derived kinematic age reveals the expected stellar activity-age trend. Furthermore, we find that the fraction of thin (thick) disk stars increases (decreases) with the transiting planet multiplicity (N {sub p} = 0, 1, 2 and 3+) and the kinematic age decreases with N {sub p}, which could be a consequence of the dynamical evolution of planetary architecture with age. The LAMOST–Gaia–Kepler catalog will be useful for future studies on the correlations between the exoplanet distributions and the stellar Galactic environments as well as ages.

Hubble Space Telescope Imaging of Three Isolated Faint Dwarf Galaxies beyond the Local Group: Pavo, Corvus A, and Kamino

We present new Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging of three recently discovered star-forming dwarf galaxies beyond the Local Group: Pavo, Corvus A, and Kamino. The discovery of Kamino is reported here for the first time. They rank among the most isolated faint dwarf galaxies known; hence they provide unique opportunities to study galaxy evolution at the smallest scales, free from the environmental effects of more massive galaxies. Our HST data reach ∼2–4 magnitudes below the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) for each dwarf, allowing us to measure their distances, structural properties, and recent star formation histories (SFHs). All three galaxies contain a complex stellar population of young and old stars, and are typical of field galaxies in this mass regime (M V = −10.62 ± 0.08 and $D = 2.16_{-0.07}^{+0.08}$ Mpc for Pavo, M V = −10.91 ± 0.10 and D = 3.34 ± 0.11 Mpc for Corvus A, and M V = −12.02 ± 0.12 and $D = 6.50_{-0.11}^{+0.15}$ Mpc for Kamino). Our HST-derived SFHs reveal differences among the three dwarfs: Pavo and Kamino show relatively steady, continuous star formation, while Corvus A formed ∼60% of its stellar mass by 10 Gyr ago. These results align with theoretical predictions of diverse evolutionary pathways for isolated low-mass galaxies.

AT2025ulz and S250818k: Zooming in with the Hubble Space Telescope

AT2025ulz is an optical/near-infrared transient discovered during follow-up of the candidate gravitational wave (GW) event S250818k. Its young age (≲1 day), rapid decline, and strong color evolution over the first 48 hr classify it as a potential kilonova candidate. In this work, we present the results of our observing campaign, carried out with the Gran Telescopio Canarias and the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Although the early time evolution of AT2025ulz resembles some aspects of a kilonova, its rapid onset (∼3 hr after the GW trigger) and luminosity (a factor of ∼5 brighter than AT2017gfo in g band) are difficult to reproduce. Only a small subset of our kilonova models matches its multicolor light curve, and the inferred ejecta mass is uncomfortably large given the low chirp mass (≲0.87 M ⊙ ) of the GW candidate. HST observations place the transient within a nearby (z = 0.08489) spiral galaxy with ongoing star formation and measure a color (F336W − F160W ≈ 1.4 mag) that is too blue to match with a kilonova. Our data support the classification of AT2025ulz as a supernova, initially undergoing a shock-cooling phase and later entering its photospheric phase and spectroscopically identified via its broad absorption features.

Impact of Space Heating Options on Electricity Rates and Affordability

Electricity prices have increased in many regions of the U.S., with a national average of 18 cents/kWh projected for 2026, up from 16 cents/kWh in 2020. While the increases can be attributed to a number of factors, increasing electricity use in an efficient and strategic manner - with energy efficient building envelope upgrades and high performance HVAC systems - has the potential to increase revenue for utilities without significantly increasing electricity demand, and therefore could help moderate rate increases. This effect has been studied for electric vehicle charging[1] and dual-fuel heat pumps in Minnesota[2]. Leveraging a recently developed system cost methodology and FERC data on utility revenue, spending, and profits, this poster will present the direction and relative magnitude of rate impacts for efficient space heating upgrades in utility balancing areas across the contiguous U.S., using current prices and showing how the rate impacts would evolve under future grid scenarios.

Optimizing Perovskite Thin‐Film Parameter Spaces with Machine Learning‐Guided Robotic Platform for High‐Performance Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract Simultaneously optimizing the processing parameters of functional thin films remains a challenge. The design and utilization of a fully automated platform called SPINBOT is presented for the engineering of solution‐processed functional thin films. The SPINBOT is capable of performing experiments with high sampling variability through the unsupervised processing of hundreds of substrates with exceptional experimental control. Through the iterative optimization process enabled by the Bayesian optimization (BO) algorithm, the SPINBOT explores an intricate parameter space, continuously improving the quality and reproducibility of the produced thin films. This machine learning (ML)‐guided reliable SPINBOT platform enables the acceleration of the optimization process of perovskite solar cells via a simple photoluminescence characterization of films. As a result, this study arrives at an optimal film that, when processed into a solar cell in an ambient atmosphere, immediately yields a champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 21.6% with satisfactory performance reproducibility. The unsealed devices retain 90% of their initial efficiency after 1100 h of continuous operation at 60–65 °C under metal‐halide lamps. It is anticipated that the integration of robotic platforms with the intelligent algorithm will facilitate the widespread adoption of effective autonomous experimentation to address the evolving needs and constraints within the materials science research community.

Mapping the Binary Covalent Alloy Space to Pursue Superior Nitrogen Reduction Reaction Catalysts

The electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) has the potential to decarbonize industrial ammonia production. However, NRR has poor activity and selectivity versus the competing hydrogen evolution reaction for catalysts that adhere to scaling relations. Overcoming the limitations imposed by scaling relations requires more complex catalyst materials, however, evaluating materials beyond simple metal systems is a large combinatorial problem that requires an improved understanding of the electrocatalyst surface to rationally guide the discovery of superior catalysts. The study uses grand canonical density functional theory to uncover NRR trends on a large and disparate set of binary covalent alloys (BCA) with variable compositions and active-site geometries. The studied BCAs generally follow scaling relations, albeit with larger variance and several systems that significantly break scaling. BCAs with early- to mid-transition metals tend to lie near the volcano peak and activate the N 2 triple bond via a side-on binding configuration. Trends in the BCA space cannot be readily predicted using simple electronic descriptors, which is ascribed to the large geometric variability of the BCA surfaces. Furthermore, it is anticipated that these findings will provide a foundation for the rational design of superior NRR electrocatalysts with increasing material complexity.

A Strategy for Constructing Pore‐Space‐Partitioned MOFs with High Uptake Capacity for C 2 Hydrocarbons and CO 2

Abstract Introduction of pore partition agents into hexagonal channels of MIL‐88 type (acs topology) endows materials with high tunability in gas sorption. Here, we report a strategy to partition acs framework into pacs (partitioned acs) crystalline porous materials (CPM). This strategy is based on insertion of in situ synthesized 4,4′‐dipyridylsulfide (dps) ligands. One third of open metal sites in the acs net are retained in pacs MOFs; two thirds are used for pore‐space partition. The Co 2 V‐pacs MOFs exhibit near or at record high uptake capacities for C 2 H 2 , C 2 H 4 , C 2 H 6 , and CO 2 among MOFs. The storage capacity of C 2 H 2 is 234 cm 3 g −1 (298 K) and 330 cm 3 g −1 (273 K) at 1 atm for CPM‐733‐dps (the Co 2 V‐BDC form, BDC=1,4‐benzenedicarboxylate). These high uptake capacities are accomplished with low heat of adsorption, a feature desirable for low‐energy‐cost adsorbent regeneration. CPM‐733‐dps is stable and shows no loss of C 2 H 2 adsorption capacity following multiple adsorption–desorption cycles.

Mediated Inner‐Sphere Electron Transfer Induces Homogeneous Reduction of CO 2 via Through‐Space Electronic Conjugation**

Abstract The electrocatalytic reduction of CO 2 is an appealing method for converting renewable energy sources into value‐added chemical feedstocks. We report a co‐electrocatalytic system for the reduction of CO 2 to CO comprised of a molecular Cr complex and dibenzothiophene‐5,5‐dioxide (DBTD) as a redox mediator, which achieves high activity (TOF=1.51–2.84×10 5 s −1 ) and quantitative selectivity. Under aprotic or protic conditions, DBTD produces a co‐electrocatalytic response with 1 by coordinating trans to the site of CO 2 binding and mediating electron transfer from the electrode with quantitative efficiency for CO. This assembly is reliant on through‐space electronic conjugation between the π frameworks of DBTD and the bpy fragment of the catalyst ligand, with contributions from dispersive interactions and weak sulfone coordination.

Simultaneous Control of Pore‐Space Partition and Charge Distribution in Multi‐Modular Metal–Organic Frameworks

Abstract We report here a strategy for making anionic pacs type porous materials by combining pore space partition with charge reallocation. The method uses the first negatively charged pore partition ligand (2,5,8‐tri‐(4‐pyridyl)‐1,3,4,6,7,9‐hexaazaphenalene, H‐tph) that simultaneously enables pore partition and charge reallocation. Over two dozen anionic pacs materials have been made to demonstrate their excellent chemical stability and a high degree of tunability. Notably, Ni 3 ‐bdt‐tph (bdt=1,4‐benzeneditetrazolate) exhibits month‐long water stability, while CoV‐bdt‐tph sets a new benchmark for C 2 H 2 storage capacity under ambient conditions for ionic MOFs. In addition to tunable in‐framework modules, we show feasibility to tune the type and concentration of extra‐framework counter cations and their influence on both stability and capability to separate industrial C 3 H 8 /C 3 H 6 and C 6 H 6 /C 6 H 12 mixtures.

Electrochemical Capacitance Traces with Interlayer Spacing in Two‐dimensional Conductive Metal–Organic Frameworks

Abstract Electrically conductive metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising candidates for electrochemical capacitors (EC) for fast energy storage due to their high specific surface areas and potential for redox activity. To maximize energy density, traditional inorganic pseudocapacitors have utilized faradaic processes in addition to double‐layer capacitance. Although conductive MOFs are usually comprised of redox active ligands which allow faradaic reactions upon electrochemical polarization, systematic studies providing deeper understanding of the charge storage processes and structure‐function relationships have been scarce. Here, we investigate the charge storage mechanisms of a series of triazatruxene‐based 2D layered conductive MOFs with variable alkyl functional groups, Ni 3 (HIR 3 ‐TAT) 2 (TAT=triazatruxene; R=H, Et, n ‐Bu, n ‐Pent). Functionalization of the triazatruxene core allows for systematic variation of structural parameters while maintaining in‐plane conjugation between ligands and metals. Specifically, R groups modulate interlayer spacing, which in turn shifts the charge storage mechanism from double‐layer capacitance towards pseudocapacitance, leading to an increase in molar specific capacitance from Ni 3 (HIH 3 ‐TAT) 2 to Ni 3 (HIBu 3 ‐TAT) 2 . Partial exfoliation of Ni 3 (HIBu 3 ‐TAT) 2 renders redox active ligand moieties more accessible, and thus increases the dominance of faradaic processes. Our strategy of controlling charge storage mechanism through tuning the accessibility of redox‐active sites may motivate further design and engineering of electrode materials for EC.
