Oscillator strength trends in group IV homologous ions

Shock-tube data are used to examine systematic f-value behavior in prominent visible transition arrays for the homologous emitter sequence Si-II, Ge-II, Sn-II, and Pb-II. Regularities found in these data are compared with trends in lighter elements. Agreements and disparities with theoretical and experimental oscillator strengths from existing literature are noted.

Chemical fractionations in meteorites. XI - C2 chondrites

Measurements of the compositions of 20 trace elements in the representative C2 chondrites Boriskino, Cold Bokkeveld, Erakot, Essebi, Haripura, Santa Cruz and Al Rais are reported. The contents of Ag, Au, Bi, Cd, Cs, Ge, In, Ir, Ni, Os, Pd, Rb, Re, Sb, Se, Sn, Te, Tl, U, and Zn were determined by radiochemical neutron activation analysis. The siderophile abundances of the C2 chondrites are found to be less uniform than those of other carbonaceous chondrites, while the C2R chondrite Al Rais is systematically lower in 12 volatiles than the C2M chondrites. Enrichment of Bi and Tl found in Erakot and Haripura indicate the possible presence of the late condensate mysterite. Volatile abundances are shown to agree with matrix contents for meteorites that have suffered little aqueous alteration, however to be 20-30% lower for the more altered meteorites. Finally, the decline of element abundance with volatility is shown to be consistent with the sigmoid curve explained by the two-component model.

A search for stellar remnants of supernovae

The slitless spectra of the stars in the central regions of six galactic supernova remnants Cas A, Kepler, Tycho, SN 1006, RCW 86, and the Cygnus Loop were obtained with the prime focus transmission gratings at the 4M telescopes on Kitt Peak and Cerro Tololo. It was found that no stellar remnant with an unusually blue or peculiar spectrum is present in any of the remnants down to the limit of m sub pg of 18.5. Except for the Cygnus Loop, the area searched in each remnant is large enough that objects with transverse velocities of 1000 km/s would be well within the field. The results are also compared with a computation of emission from gas near a neutron star and with the unpulsed emission from the Crab pulsar; in both cases upper limits were set which place constraints on a possible condensed stellar remnant.

Skylab observations of the Al I autoionization lines gamma 1932 and gamma 1936 during a solar flare

Observations are presented of the Al I autoionization lines gamma 1932 and gamma 1936 during the H alpha class SN subflare of 1973 August 9, obtained from the NRL slit spectrograph aboard Skylab. These profiles are compared with observations from an active-region plage and with the quiet-sun observations of McAllister. Line profiles through model flare and quiet-sun atmospheres are computed assuming local thermodynamic equilibrium. The Al I autoionization lines are sensitive to the conditions just below the temperature-minimum region of the model atmosphere, and the observations support evidence that increased heating of this region occurs during flares. It shown, using observations from three additional flares, that excess flare heating down to the T sub min region probably occurs only near loop footpoints. The behavior of Fe and Fe II lines in the 1920 A range is also discussed.

NBS: Materials measurements

Measurements in an Auger spectrometer of surface impurity concentrations on liquid gallium showed that the principle impurities were oxygen and carbon. The impurities showed a tendency to collect into plates or clumps. In Pb rich Pb-Sn off eutectic alloys, macrosegration caused by solutal convection was not reduced by vertical or horizontal fields of 0.1 T, but downward solidification virtually eliminated macrosegration in small diameter samples. Phase assemblages of selected compositions on the joints K(Fe0.5 Si-0.5) O2 -SiO2 and KFeO2 - SiO2 were determined over a large range of oxygen partial pressures and the temperature range 800 C to 1400 C.

Float zone experiments

The objectives of this work are: to determine if surface tension-driven convection in float zone experiments may be controlled by means of surface films; and if convection can be controlled, determine whether homogeneous solute distributions will be achieved in float zone solidification and whether accurate measurements of liquid diffusion coefficients may be obtained from float zone solidification experiments. Sn was chosen as a model material because it is a group IV element, chemically similar to Si and Ge and its low melting point and low vapor pressure allow Auger spectroscopy to be employed with liquid samples.

Development of lead salt semiconductor lasers for the 9-17 micron spectral region

Improved diode lasers of Pb sub 1-x Sn sub x Se operating in the 9-17 micrometers spectral region were developed. The performance characteristics of the best lasers exceeded the contract goals of 500 microW/mode at T 30K in the 9-12 micrometers region and 200 microW/mode at T 18K in the 16-17 micrometers region. Increased reliability and device yields resulted from processing improvements which evolved from a series of diagnostic studies. By means of Auger electron spectroscopy, laser shelf storage degradation was shown to be characterized by the presence of In metal on the semiconductor crystal surfaces. Studies of various metal barrier layers between the crystals and the In metal led to the development of an improved metallurgical contacting technology which has resulted in devices with performance stability values exceeding the contract goal of a one year shelf life. Lasers cycled over 500 times between 300K and 77K were also shown to be stable. Studies on improved methods of fabricating striped geometry lasers indicated that good spectral mode characteristics resulted from lasers which stripe widths of 12 and 25 micrometers.

Observations of supernova 1979c in M 100

The IUE observations of supernova 1979c in M 100 are presented and discussed. The main results are: (1) the bulk of the energy is in the form of continuous emission which is radiated by the main SN envelope; (2) the absorption features originate mostly in both the disks and the haloes of our Galaxy and M 100; and (3) the emission lines are produced in a highly ionized shell which has a radius greater than twice the radius of the main envelope and consists of compressed circumstellar material in which the abundance ratio N/C is about 30 times higher than solar.

Liquid-phase epitaxy grown PbSnTe distributed feedback laser diodes with broad continuous single-mode tuning range

Distributed feedback (DFB) pulsed laser operation has been demonstrated in stripe geometry Pb(1-x)Sn(x)Te double-heterostructures grown by liquid-phase epitaxy. The grating structure of 0.79 micron periodicity operates in first order near 12.8 microns and was fabricated prior to the liquid-phase epitaxial growth using holographic exposure techniques. These DFB lasers had moderate thresholds, 3.6 kA/sq cm, and the output power versus current curves exhibited a sharp turn-on free of kinks. Clean, single-mode emission spectra, continuously tunable over a range in excess of 20 per cm, centered about 780 per cm (12.8 microns), and at an average rate of 1.2 per cm-K from 9 to 26 K, were observed. While weaker modes could at times be seen in the spectrum, substantially single-mode operation was obtained over the entire operating range and to over 10 times threshold.

The evolution of supernova remnants in different galactic environments and its effects on supernova statistics

It is shown that only a small fraction of the many supernovae in the Galaxy produces observable supernova remnants; this fraction, which is found to depend weakly on the lower mass limit of the SN progenitors, and more strongly on the specific characteristics of the associated interstellar medium, decreases from about 15% near the galactic center to 10% at R(gal) of about 10 kpc and drops nearly to zero for R(gal) greater than 15 kpc. Whether an SNR is detectable is determined by the density of the ambient interstellar medium in which it is embedded; it is found that SNRs are detectable only above some critical density (about 0.1 per cu cm). The presence of large low-density superbubble cavities around stellar associations due to the combined effects of stellar winds and supernova shells strongly suggests that a large portion of the detectable SNRs must have runaway stars as their progenitors.

Solutal convection induced macrosegregation and the dendrite to composite transition in off-eutectic alloys

The effect of solute gradient induced convection during vertical solidification on the macrosegregation of Pb-rich Pb-Sn off-eutectic alloys is determined experimentally as a function of composition and growth rate. In many cases macrosegregation is sufficient to prevent the plane front solidification of the alloy. The transition from dendritic to composite structure is found to occur when the composition of the solid is close enough to the eutectic composition to satisfy a stability criterion based on the ratio of the liquid temperature gradient to growth rate. A vertical or horizontal magnetic field of 0.1 T (1 kilogauss) does not reduce macrosegregation, but downward solidification (liquid below solid) virtually eliminates macrosegregation in small (3 mm) diameter samples.

Molybdenum-tin as a solar cell metallization system

The operations of solar cell manufacture are briefly examined. The formation of reliable, ohmic, low-loss, and low-cost metal contacts on solar cells is a critical process step in cell manufacturing. In a commonly used process, low-cost metallization is achieved by screen printing a metal powder-glass frit ink on the surface of the Si surface and the conductive metal powder. A technique utilizing a molybdenum-tin alloy for the metal contacts appears to lower the cost of materials and to reduce process complexity. The ink used in this system is formulated from MoO3 with Sn powder and a trace amount of titanium resonate. Resistive losses of the resulting contacts are low because the ink contains no frit. The MoO3 is finally melted and reduced in forming gas (N2+H2) to Mo metal. The resulting Mo is highly reactive which facilitates the Mo-Si bonding.

Template-directed synthesis of oligoguanylic acids - Metal ion catalysis

The effects of Zn(2+), Pb(2+) and other metal ions on the efficiency and stereo-selectivity of the template-directed oligomerization of guanosine 5'-phosphorimidazolide are investigated. Reactions were run in the presence of a polyC template in a 2,6-lutidine buffer, and products analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography on an RPC-5 column. The presence of the Pb(2+) ion is found to lead to the formation of 2'-5' linked oligomers up to the 40-mer, while Zn(2+) favors the formation of predominantly 3'-5' linked oligomers up to the 35-mer. When amounts of uracil, cytidine or adenosine 5'-phosphorimidazole equal to those of the guanosine derivative are included in the reaction mixture, the incorrect base is incorporated into the oligomer about 10% of the time with a Pb(2+) catalyst, but less than 0.5% of the time with Zn(2+). The Sn(2+), Sb(3+) and Bi(3+) ions are also found to promote the formation of 2'-5' oligomers, although not as effectively as Pb(2+), while no metal ions other than Zn(2+) promote the formation of the 3'-5' oligomers. The results may be important for the understanding of the evolution of nucleic acid replication in the absence of enzymes.

The effect of grooves in amorphous substrates on the orientation of metal deposits. I - Carbon substrates

The graphoepitaxial alignment of vapor-deposited discrete metal crystallites is investigated in the nucleation and growth stages and during annealing by in situ UHV/TEM techniques. Various stages of nucleation, growth and coalescence of vapor deposits of Au, Ag, Pb, Sn, and Bi on amorphous, topographically structured C substrates are analyzed by advanced dark-field techniques to detect preferred local orientations. It is found that the topography-induced orientation of metal crystallites depends strongly on their mobility and their respective tendency to develop pronounced crystallographic shapes. Lowering of the average surface free energies and increasing the crystallographic surface energy anisotropies cause generally improved graphoepitaxial alignments.

The interstellar spectrum of the supernova 1980k in NGC 6946

Bright supernovae in external galaxies offer a rare opportunity to probe the intervening interstellar media over very extended path-lengths, including the disk and halo of the Galaxy and the parent galaxy of the supernova. SN 1980k was discovered in NGC 6946 on 1980 October 29. In the first month after discovery, high resolution optical and ultraviolet observations were obtained to exploit the supernova as a probe of the intervening interstellar media. The obtained data are discussed. In the spectra, absorption lines were observed of Mg I, Mg II, Fe II, Mn II, Ca II and Na I. The absorption lines are attributed to the intervening interstellar media distributed over the very extended line of sight sampled, of order 7 Mpc. These lines are wider and stronger than any previously measured in the quiescent interstellar gas in the halo and disk of the Milky Way and of external galaxies

X-ray diffraction from high pressure Ge using synchrotron radiation

The high pressure structural phase transition in Ge has been studied using the energy dispersive X-ray diffraction technique and a synchrotron radiation source. Ge was observed to transform to the beta-Sn tetragonal structure in agreement with the earlier results of Jamieson, but the phase transition began at 80 + or - 5 kilobars, a somewhat lower value than generally reported. These experimental diffraction results are compared with the recent self-consistent pseudopotential calculations of Yin and Cohen (1981) and with the observed transition pressure for shock wave loaded Ge.

Diffraction studies of the high pressure phases of GaAs and GaP

High pressure structural phase transitions of GaAs and GaP have been studied by energy dispersive X-ray diffraction with the radiation from the Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source. GaAs began to transform at 172 + or - 7 kbar to an orthorhombic structure possibly belonging to space group Fmmm. GaP transformed to a tetragonal beta-Sn type phase at 215 + or - 8 kbar. Although pressure transmitting media were used to minimize shear stresses in the specimens, the high pressure diffraction results were interpreted as showing evidence for planar defects in the specimens.

Segregation effects during growth of pseudo-binary system with large liquidus-solidus separation

Results are reported for an experimental study of the seeded growth, of PbSnTe single crystals in a vertical Bridgman-Stockbarger (B-S) furnace. Profiles of axial and radial segregation of Sn are presented for crystal growth from melts with aspect ratios of 15 and 6.8; the profiles indicate intense convective mixing. A one-dimensional model of heat and mass transfer in an idealized B-S furnace with diffusion control is used to examine the importance of liquidus-solidus separation in determining growth-rate and composition transients in a pseudobinary system. It is shown that the coupling of heat and mass transfer in a pseudobinary system with a large liquidus-solidus separation causes the transient behavior in a nondilute system to differ markedly from such behavior in a dilute system and that PbSnTe crystals with a reasonable diameter can be grown under nearly convectionless conditions in a microgravity environment.
