Station to instrumented aircraft L-band telemetry system and RF signal controller for spacecraft simulations and station calibration

An L-band telemetry system designed to provide the capability of near-real-time processing of calibration data is described. The system also provides the capability of performing computerized spacecraft simulations, with the aircraft as a data source, and evaluating the network response. The salient characteristics of a telemetry analysis and simulation program (TASP) are discussed, together with the results of TASP testing. The results of the L-band system testing have successfully demonstrated the capability of near-real-time processing of telemetry test data, the control of the ground-received signal to within + or - 0.5 db, and the computer generation of test signals.

Evaluation and optimization of the advanced signal counting techniques on weldments

The signal counting technique with the Delta ultrasonic method is evaluated and optimized for flaw detection in aluminum welds. A comparison is made between the counting and conventional amplitude-gate methods to detect flaws. No conclusion is drawn on the sensitivity of these two methods to detect flaws when the mismatch at the welds is small (25 mils or less). When the mismatch is 25 mils or more, the signal counting method is more sensitive. Of the 24 welded specimens, 50 flaws were found by X-ray inspection and 59 by the Delta method. On 1/4-inch thick welds, X-ray is equal to or slightly more sensitive than Delta method, but on the 1/2-inch thick welds Delta ultrasonic appears more sensitive in flaw detection.

The application of signal detection theory to optics

The role of measurements of noncommuting quantum observables is considered in the detection of signals and estimation of signal parameters by quantum receivers. The restoration of images focused on a photosensitive surface is discussed for data as numbers of photoelectrons ejected from various parts of the surface. The detection of an image formed on a photosensitive surface in the presence of background illumination for similar data is also considered.

Fast Faraday fading of long range satellite signals.

20 MHz radio signals have been received during the day from satellite Beacon-B when it was below the optical horizon by using a bank of narrow filters to improve the signal to noise ratio. The Faraday fading rate becomes constant, under these conditions, at a level determined by the plasma frequency just below the F-layer peak. Variations in the Faraday fading rate reveal fluctuations in the electron density near the peak, while the rate of attaining the constant level depends on the shape of the electron density profile.

Design of optimal probing signals for vector parameter estimation.

In the design of optimal inputs or probing signals for parameter estimation, it is more natural to consider functions of the Fisher information matrix as the criterion of optimality instead of some function of the error covariance matrix. The input which maximizes the Fisher information measure for efficient estimation of a scalar parameter also provides the minimum error variance. The information is thus a logical choice for the optimality criterion in scalar problems. No such obvious choice is apparent for vector parameter estimation. A number of performance measures are examined and compared in the present study, and a useful criterion is selected. The design of an optimal probing signal using this criterion is shown to be equivalent to an optimal control problem in which certain equality constraints must be satisfied. This problem may be solved by conventional techniques of deterministic or stochastic optimal control.

Signal sequence detection given noisy, common background image sets.

The optimum processing (likelihood functional) is found for a set of M images, each the sum of a member of a signal sequence due to an object to be detected and its parameters estimated, a sample function of a noise field, and a sample function of a common background field. The noise fields are independent, zero mean, white Gaussian fields, all independent of the background field. The latter is assumed to be either (1) completely unknown or of known mean and covariance functions with (2) a certain fluctuation property or (3) Gaussian. Three equivalent forms of the optimum processing are found: (1) a summation of generalized matched filterings of the images, (2) a summation of matched filtering of certain generalized differences of the images, and (3) a summation of 'estimator-correlator' type filterings. The detection performance and optimum signal/image selection under the Neyman-Pearson criterion is given, and is shown that optimum processor and signal design can completely eliminate any effect of the background on detectability.

State of the art in the detection of intelligent extraterrestrial signals.

Recent progress in ideas of how signals that might represent electromagnetic radiations of intelligent civilizations elsewhere in the galaxy is summarized. Project Cyclops, carried out at Ames Research Center under the auspices of NASA and the American Society for Engineering Education, determined that microwaves are superior to lasers for interstellar signalling. It is felt that the band lying between the resonances of the two dissociation products of water, the hydrogen line at 1420 MHz, and the first hydroxyl line at 1662 MHz, is the most suitable. Phased antenna arrays of perhaps 1000 to 10,000 dishes of 100 m diam would be required. It is considered that a list of likely stars should be compiled, and these should be searched one at a time. Procedures for combing the spectrum are outlined.

Signal conditioner test set

Compact, light-weight, solid-state test set can be used to check signal conditioning modules while they are installed in system. Test sets may also be used to cycle ground computer, if it is suspected of malfunctioning, rather than using signal conditioners.

Application of frequency discrimination technique to the analysis of electroencephalographic signals

A frequency discrimination technique is realized by an inexpensive frequency discriminator for direct on-line measurement of the entrainment phenomenon in EEG as entrained by the frequency of a sensory stimulus. The use of this device for detecting the presence or absence of the stimulus effect and the measurement of the time delays in the entrainment is demonstrated. The EEG signal is first filtered by a narrow-band filter with center frequency about the alpha-rhythm of the individual. It is then reasonable to consider the alpha signal as narrow-band random process with the alpha frequency f sub alpha as the mean frequency of the spectral band.

An experimental investigation of the power spectrum of phase modulation induced on a satellite radio signal by the ionosphere

The power spectrum of phase modulation imposed upon satellite radio signals by the inhomogeneous F-region of the ionosphere (100 - 500 km) was studied. Tapes of the S-66 Beacon B Satellite recorded during the period 1964 - 1966 were processed to yield or record the frequency of modulation induced on the signals by ionospheric dispersion. This modulation is produced from the sweeping across the receiving station as the satellite transits of the two dimensional spatial phase pattern are produced on the ground. From this a power spectrum of structure sizes comprising the diffracting mechanism was determined using digital techniques. Fresnel oscillations were observed and analyzed along with some comments on the statistical stationarity of the shape of the power spectrum observed.

Application of frequency discrimination technique to the analysis of electroencephalographic signals.

A frequency discrimination technique is described which has proved to be effective in measuring the entrainment phenomenon in EEG signals. The validity of a narrow-band-process model used to characterize the signals is demonstrated. The technique (realized by an inexpensive device described elsewhere) is shown to provide a means of studying the synchronization phenomenon as related to alertness.

The transmission of sonic boom signals into rooms through open windows.

This paper is the second of two companion papers. In the first paper, expressions for the acoustic field generated inside a room with an open window due to incoming transient or periodic signals have been presented. In this paper, the technique has been applied to the specific example of an N-wave type signal. Detailed mathematical analysis is followed by its approximate version and numerical computation. Results of controlled experiments, using simulated sonic booms, have been compared with theoretical predictions.

Decision-directed detector for overlapping PCM/NRZ signals.

A decision-directed (DD) technique for the detection of overlapping PCM/NRZ signals in the presence of white Gaussian noise is investigated. The performance of the DD detector is represented by probability of error Pe versus input signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). To examine how much improvement in performance can be achieved with this technique, Pe's with and without DD feedback are evaluated in parallel. Further, analytical results are compared with those found by Monte Carlo simulations. The results are in good agreement.

Comparing bandwidth requirements for binary baseband signals.

The percentage of total power passed through ideal band-limited channels with bandwidths equal to various multiples of the bit rate is examined for 14 unique binary baseband signaling schemes. The channel bandwidth required to pass 5 percent of the total power is determined as a measure of the need for near-dc channel response. Conclusions are reached as to which signals would be most suitable for high-rate magnetic tape recording.
