Low-subsonic stability and control characteristics of a 0.015-scale remotely controlled elevon model (44-0) of the space shuttle orbiter in the Langley Research Center low turbulence pressure tunnel (LA61B)

A Langley-built 0.015-scale SSV orbiter configuration with remote independently operated left and right elevon surfaces was tested in the NASA/Langley Research Center Low Turbulence Pressure Tunnel. A detailed aerodynamic data base was obtained for the current shuttle orbiter configuration. Special attention was directed to definition of Reynolds number effects on nonlinear aerodynamic characteristics of the orbiter. Small increments in angle of attack, sideslip, and elevon/aileron position were studied in order to better define areas where nonlinearities may occur. Force and moment, and elevon position data were recorded over an angle of attack range -2 deg to 20 deg at angles of sideslip of 0 deg , + or - 2 deg, and + or - 4 deg. Tests were also made over an angle of sideslip range of -6 deg to 6 deg at selected angles of attack and elevon/aileron position. The test Mach numbers were from 0.15 to 0.30 at Reynolds numbers from 2.0 to 13.5 million per foot.

Optical atmospheric scattering and absorption limitations on offset pointing from Earth Observatory Satellite /EOS/ sensors

The Braslau-Dave atmospheric model which calculates the upward monochromatic light fluxes leaving the top of the atmosphere as a function of viewing angle, sun angle, and ground reflectance was employed to study the effect of atmospheric scattering and attenuation on universal apparent contrast for two EOS remote sensors operated at very large offset or pointing angles: the Thematic Mapper (TM) and the High Resolution Pointable Imager (HRPI). The TM offset off nadir could be plus or minus 20 degrees with an 11 degree scan angle and the HRPI pointing angle off nadir could be plus or minus 45 degrees with a 3 degree scan angle. The reduction of universal apparent contrast of EOS imagery is studied as a function of sun elevation angle, atmospheric aerosol loading, radiation wavelength and sensor look angles.

Electronic system for optical shutter control

The paper describes a precise and versatile electronic system for shutter control in light beam experiments. Digital and analog circuitry is used to provide automatic timing, exposure control, manual operation, and remote programmability. A block diagram of the system is presented and the individual circuits - the timer control circuit, the clock control circuit, the comparator circuit, the exposure (integrator) circuit, and the shutter drive circuit are discussed in detail and diagrams are provided.

Uniform spray coating for large tanks

System employs spray facility located within ventilated plastic booth to uniformly coat exterior of large cylindrical tanks with polyurethane foam insulation. Coating target is rotated on turntable while movable spray guns apply overlapping spirals of foam. Entire operation may be controlled by single operator from remote station.

High supersonic stability and control characteristics of a 0.015-scale (remotely controlled elevon) model 44-0 space shuttle orbiter tested in the NASA/LaRC 4-foot UPWT (LEG 2) (LA75), volume 1

Wind tunnel tests are reported on a 0.015-scale SSV orbiter model with remote independently operated left and right elevon surfaces. Special attention was directed to definition of nonlinear aerodynamic characteristics by taking data at small increments. Six component aerodynamic force and moment and elevon position data were recorded for the space shuttle orbiter with various elevon, aileron rudder and speed brake deflection combinations over an angle of attack range from -4 deg to 32 deg at angles of sideslip of 0 deg and 3 deg. Additional tests were made over an angle of sideslip range from -6 deg to 8 deg at selected angles of attack. Test Mach numbers were 2.86, 2.90, 3.90 and 4.60 with Reynolds numbers held at a constant 2.0 x 1 million per foot.

Application of aerial photography to water-related programs in Michigan

Aerial photography and information system technology were used to generate information required for the effective operation of three water-related programs in Michigan. Potential mosquito breeding sites were identified from specially acquired low altitude 70 mm color photography for the city of Lansing; the inventory identified 35% more surface water areas than indicated on existing field maps. A comprehensive inventory of surface water sources and potential access sites was prepared to assist fire departments in Antrim County with fire truck water-recharge operations. Remotely-sensed land cover/use data for Windsor Township, Eaton County, were integrated with other resource data into a computer-based information system for regional water quality studies. Eleven thematic maps focusing on landscape features affecting non-point water pollution and waste disposal were generated from analyses of a four-hectare grid-based data file containing land cover/use, soils, topographic and geologic (well-log) data.

The paper describes the use of aerial photography and information system technology in the provision of information required for the effective operation of three water-related programs in Michigan. Remotely-sensed land cover/use data for Windsor Township, Eaton County were integrated with other resource data into a computer-based information system for regional water quality studies. Eleven thematic maps specifically focussed on landscape features affecting non-point water pollution and waste disposal were generated from analyses of a four-hectare grid-based data file containing land cover/use, soils, topographic and geologic (well-log) data.

GCF HSD error control

A selective repeat automatic repeat request (ARQ) system was implemented under software control in the Ground Communications Facility error detection and correction (EDC) assembly at JPL and the comm monitor and formatter (CMF) assembly at the DSSs. The CMF and EDC significantly improved real time data quality and significantly reduced the post-pass time required for replay of blocks originally received in error. Since the remote mission operation centers (RMOCs) do not provide compatible error correction equipment, error correction will not be used on the RMOC-JPL high speed data (HSD) circuits. The real time error correction capability will correct error burst or outage of two loop-times or less for each DSS-JPL HSD circuit.

A system for intelligent teleoperation research

The Automation Technology Branch of NASA Langley Research Center is developing a research capability in the field of artificial intelligence, particularly as applicable in teleoperator/robotics development for remote space operations. As a testbed for experimentation in these areas, a system concept has been developed and is being implemented. This system termed DAISIE (Distributed Artificially Intelligent System for Interacting with the Environment), interfaces the key processes of perception, reasoning, and manipulation by linking hardware sensors and manipulators to a modular artificial intelligence (AI) software system in a hierarchical control structure. Verification experiments have been performed: one experiment used a blocksworld database and planner embedded in the DAISIE system to intelligently manipulate a simple physical environment; the other experiment implemented a joint-space collision avoidance algorithm. Continued system development is planned.

Model analysis of remotely controlled rendezvous and docking with display prediction

Manual control of rendezvous and docking (RVD) of two spacecraft in low earth orbit by a remote human operator is discussed. Experimental evidence has shown that control performance degradation for large transmission delays (between spacecraft and operations control center) can be substantially improved by the introduction of predictor displays. An intial Optimal Control Model (OCM) analysis of RVD translational and rotational perturbation control was performed, with emphasis placed on the predictive capabilities of the combined Kalman estimator/optimal predictor with respect to control performance, for a range of time delays, motor noise levels and tracking axes. OCM predictions are then used as a reference for comparing tracking performance with a simple predictor display, as well as with no display prediction at all. Use is made here of an imperfect internal model formulation, whereby it is assumed that the human operator has no knowledge of the system transmission delay.

Robots as man-extension systems in space

The main topic of the paper is sensing and computer based automation and man-machine interface devices and techniques which permit task-level and 'intelligent' two-way communication between human operator and remote robot in earth orbit. General considerations are presented on control and information problems in teleoperation and on the characteristics of earth orbital teleoperation. Specific control and information display devices and techniques are discussed and exemplified with development results obtained at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in recent years.
