Facilitating Ionic and Electronic Conduction in Radical Polymers through Controlled Assembly

The major objectives, research performed, and significant results associated with this effort agree with the originally proposed work. That is, we have made significant advances in terms of both the experimental and computational thrusts of this effort, and these key results have allowed for us to have significant impact in the materials chemistry community. As is usual, this has led to even greater tangible product generation in the final year of the work relative to the first two years. Importantly, we have observed that the materials created under this effort have promising electronic and ionic conductivity properties along these lines, and we have developed the initial structure-property-performance relationships that offer future promise for these open-shell materials in advanced energy applications. One metric that represents this success is the number of publications that appear in notable journals regarding the work performed. Additionally, the team has been invited to present at many conferences of leading societies and at top academic institutions due to the work associated with this award. Finally, we anticipate that this will be of interest to multiple communities in the materials chemistry realm, and they will have broader impact into related technologies as well.

The Radical Atom: Mechanosynthetic 3D Printing of an Atomically Precise SPM Tip

This research effort sought to overcome current limitations in scanning probe-based atomic manipulation to enable atomically precise manufacturing (APM). Previous theoretical and experimental works on atom by atom and molecule by molecule fabrication of precise structures are limited to essentially to two-dimensions. APM will enable a paradigm shift in 21st century manufacturing practices in which every single atom in a electronic chip, device or machine can be placed in an exact and predefined position in three-dimensions. By providing a general method for generating reproducible SPM tip structure, this project will drive forward the entire field of atomically precise scanning probe microscopy, opening the door to positional control of nearly arbitrary covalent chemistry. Such control could, for example, be used in applications such as novel 2.5 or 3D microchip fabrication. The creation of a unique manufacturing method through APM has the potential to impact technologies at the theoretical limits of performance, weight, and utility including: solid-state quantum and spintronic computing systems, high efficiency optical antenna, solar power systems, defect engineered materials and extremely efficient catalysts. Although this experiment focused on pick-and-place non-scalable APM, the better understanding of the chemistry is crucial to the eventual goal of scalable APM. To place individual atoms into a specified location is a seminal aspiration of researchers and engineers in the many fields and may have early premium applications in medical devices and microelectronics.

Radical Coupling Reactions of Hydroxystilbene Glucosides and Coniferyl Alcohol: A Density Functional Theory Study

The monolignols, p-coumaryl, coniferyl, and sinapyl alcohol, arise from the general phenylpropanoid biosynthetic pathway. Increasingly, however, authentic lignin monomers derived from outside this process are being identified and found to be fully incorporated into the lignin polymer. Among them, hydroxystilbene glucosides, which are produced through a hybrid process that combines the phenylpropanoid and acetate/malonate pathways, have been experimentally detected in the bark lignin of Norway spruce (Picea abies). Several interunit linkages have been identified and proposed to occur through homo-coupling of the hydroxystilbene glucosides and their cross-coupling with coniferyl alcohol. In the current work, the thermodynamics of these coupling modes and subsequent rearomatization reactions have been evaluated by the application of density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The objective of this paper is to determine favorable coupling and cross-coupling modes to help explain the experimental observations and attempt to predict other favorable pathways that might be further elucidated via in vitro polymerization aided by synthetic models and detailed structural studies.
