Filtered Backprojection in Compton Imaging using a Spherical Harmonic Wiener Filter with Pixelated CdZnTe

Filtered backprojection is an image reconstruction technique for Compton imaging that provides reasonably high resolution at much lower computational costs when compared to iterative methods. Here, this work applies a Wiener filter that has been derived for spherical harmonics on Compton imaging using the OrionUM pixelated CdZnTe imaging-spectrometer. To regularize the filter, an investigation is made into the power spectral density of the signal and noise to develop an appropriate spectral signal-to-noise ratio model for the restoration process. Experimental measurements were conducted with two 228Th sources placed 30° apart. The resulting filtered image of the two sources have an average full-width-at-half-maximum (FWHM) of 9.8° or 7.5° when using a mean squared error and structural similarity optimization approach respectively; an improvement from the 29.0° FWHM image when using simple backprojection.

Infrasound direction of arrival determination using a balloon-borne aeroseismometer

Free-floating balloons are an emerging platform for infrasound recording, but they cannot host arrays sufficiently wide for multi-sensor acoustic direction finding techniques. Because infrasound waves are longitudinal, the balloon motion in response to acoustic loading can be used to determine the signal azimuth. This technique, called “aeroseismometry,” permits sparse balloon-borne networks to geolocate acoustic sources. This is demonstrated by using an aeroseismometer on a stratospheric balloon to measure the direction of arrival of acoustic waves from successive ground chemical explosions. A geolocation algorithm adapted from hydroacoustics is then used to calculate the location of the explosions.

Upgrade to Fixed and Translating Scintillation-based Loss Detector System in the Fermilab Drift Tube Linac

The closed-off structure of the Fermilab Drift Tube Linac precludes a robust array of instrumentation from directly monitoring the H- beam that is accelerated from 750 keV to 116 MeV. To improve beam tuning and operational assessment of Drift Tube Linac performance, scintillator-based loss monitors were previously installed along the exterior of the first two accelerating cavities to assess low energy beam losses. Here we present a recent upgrade to the loss monitor system, including significant improvements in analog signal processing to address baseline-interfering noise; digitization of the signals to enable regular operational use and tuning; and a new remote operation upgrade of the translating loss monitor with precise positioning of the loss monitor along its nine-foot track. Data from the fixed and translating detectors collected under varying beam conditions validate the utility of the upgrade.

Generative network-based approaches to generate stochastic realizations

Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) – based models have been successfully applied in generating different geological models in the literature. However, it is still challenging to use GAN to generate geological realizations with extremely sparse conditioning data (e.g. several well data), which may be regarded as local noise by GAN during the training process. In this work, we propose a novel conditional Generative Adversarial Neural Operator (cGANO) to tackle this challenge. In cGANO, the mapping between conditioning data and output is established through the U-shaped neural operators (UNO), which better preserves local information. Another advantage of using UNO comes from its grid-independent property, which makes the generation of downscaling stochastic geologic realizations possible. We tested the model performance on the IBDP geostatistical dataset with 100 realizations.

Apollo experience report: Voice communications techniques and performance

The primary performance requirement of the spaceborne Apollo voice communications system is percent word intelligibility, which is related to other link/channel parameters. The effect of percent word intelligibility on voice channel design and a description of the verification procedures are included. Development and testing performance problems and the techniques used to solve the problems are also discussed. Voice communications performance requirements should be comprehensive and verified easily; the total system must be considered in component design, and the necessity of voice processing and the associated effect on noise, distortion, and cross talk should be examined carefully.

Video enhancement of X-ray and neutron radiographs

System was devised for displaying radiographs on television screen and enhancing fine detail in picture. System uses analog-computer circuits to process television signal from low-noise television camera. Enhanced images are displayed in black and white and can be controlled to vary degree of enhancement and magnification of details in either radiographic transparencies or opaque photographs.

Quality of signatures

Three conclusions are drawn on the usability, inherent variations, and noise aspects of the spectral signatures processed from data collected by the Field Signature Acquisition System (FSAS). Conclusions are based on the spectral data collected from winter wheat of the 1972/73 season, grown at Texas A and M University, College Station, Texas.

The accuracy of automatic tracking

It has been generally assumed that tracking accuracy changes similarly to the rate of change of the curve of the measurement conversion. The problem that internal noise increases along with the signals processed by the tracking device and that tracking accuracy thus drops were considered. The main prerequisite for solution is consideration of the dependences of the output signal of the tracking device sensor not only on the measured parameter but on the signal itself.

Obstacle detection for the Mars Rover by a two dimensional rapid estimation scheme

This paper discusses an obstacle detection system applicable to a Mars Rover mission forseen possible in the early 1980's. The sensing device on the rover will be a laser rangefinder which scans the surface ahead of the vehicle. Terrain range data information is stored in matrix form. The range varies from point to point along the surface with sharp changes due to the presence of obstacles. The noise contaminated laser rangefinder readings are processed by an algorithm involving a modified version of the Kalman Filter, along with a decision scheme, to obtain complete outlines of discrete obstacles.

Annoyance of helicopter impulsive noise

Psychoacoustic studies of helicopter impulsive noise were conducted in order to qualify additional annoyance due to this feature and to develop physical impulsiveness descriptors to develop impulsivity correction methods. The currently proposed descriptors and methods of impulsiveness correction are compared using a multilinear regression analysis technique. It is shown that the presently recommended descriptor and correction method provides the best correlation with the subjective evaluations of real helicopter impulsive noises. The equipment necessary for data processing in order to apply the correction method is discussed.

Frequency domain measurement systems

Stable frequency sources and signal processing blocks were characterized by their noise spectra, both discrete and random, in the frequency domain. Conventional measures are outlined, and systems for performing the measurements are described. Broad coverage of system configurations which were found useful is given. Their functioning and areas of application are discussed briefly. Particular attention is given to some of the potential error sources in the measurement procedures, system configurations, double-balanced-mixer-phase-detectors, and application of measuring instruments.
