Continuum models for beam-like and plate-like lattice structures

A simple, rational approach is presented for developing continuum models for large repetitive beam-like and plate-like lattices with arbitrary configurations subjected to static, thermal and dynamic loadings. The continuum models for these structures are shear flexible beams and plates. They account for local effects in the repeating element of the actual structure and are characterized by their thermoelastic strain and kinetic energies from which the equations of motion and constitutive relations can be derived. The procedure for developing the expressions for thermoelastic strain and kinetic energies of the continuum involves introducing basic assumptions regarding the variation of the temperature, displacement and strain components in one or two directions (for plate-like and beam-like lattices) and obtaining effective thermoelastic and dynamic coefficients of the continuum in terms of material properties and geometry of the original lattice structure. The high accuracy of the continuum models developed is demonstrated by means of numerical examples.

Polarization by a tilted absorbing glass plate

Formulas for the response of an optical detector to the transmitted component of a tilted absorbing glass plate are derived in terms of the angle of incidence, the thickness of the plate, and the absorption coefficient and index of refraction of the glass. Numerical results are discussed for detectors of various sizes compared to the width of the incident beam and thickness of the plate.

Efficient dichroic plate for microwaves

Signal separator for dual-frequency antennas has interlaced crossed slots, or dipole elements. Plate reflects or transmits more efficiently than conventionally-designed microwave dichroic plates in which elements are not interlaced. Interlaced plate also increases bandwidth of dual-frequency antenna in which it is used.

Method of obtaining intensified image from developed photographic films and plates

A method is explained of obtaining intensified images from silver images on developed photographic films and plates. The steps involve converting silver of the developed film or plate to a radioactive compound by treatment with an aqueous alkaline solution of an organo-S35 compound; placing the treated film or plate in direct contact with a receiver film which is then exposed by radiation from the activated film; and developing and fixing the resulting intensified image on the receiver film.

Industrial potential, uses, and performance of sputtered and ion plated films

The sputtering and ion plating technology is reviewed in terms of their potential, uses and performance. It offers the greatest flexibility in coating preparation, since coatings can be tailored in any preferred chemical combination, and graded type interfaces (ceramic to metal seals) can be formed. Sputtered and ion plated film characteristics such as the degree of adherence, coherence and morphological growth which contribute to film performance and reliability are described and illustrated as used in practice. It is concluded that the potential future of sputtered and ion plated films for industrial applications will depend primarily upon greater comprehension of materials selection, possible elimination of restrictions for coating/substrate combinations and the awareness of utilizing the proper deposition parameters.

Effects of debonds on the strength of composite plates

The effect of debonds on composite structures under compressive loads is investigated in this paper. Because of the inclusion of debonds, unsymmetric laminated rectangular plates are considered. The resulting bending-extension coupling is included and is shown to be quite significant for thin laminates typical of debonded regions. The solution technique is based on the Theorem of Minimum Potential Energy; and both simply supported and clamped boundaries are considered. The need to include transverse shear deformation in the analysis is documented. Also, the range of applicability of the reduced stiffness matrix technique for such plates is stated. The consideration of non-rectangular boundaries, as would normally occur for debonded regions, has been included through a finite element study. Using the results of this study, an effective laminated plate theory for irregularly shaped debonded regions is proposed.

LDEF transverse flat plate heat pipe experiment /S1005/

The paper describes the Transverse Flat Plate Heat Pipe Experiment. A transverse flat plate heat pipe is a thermal control device that serves the dual function of temperature control and mounting base for electronic equipment. In its ultimate application, the pipe would be a lightweight structure member that could be configured in a platform or enclosure and provide temperature control for large space structures, flight experiments, equipment, etc. The objective of the LDEF flight experiment is to evaluate the zero-g performance of a number of transverse flat plate heat pipe modules. Performance will include: (1) the pipes transport capability, (2) temperature drop, and (3) ability to maintain temperature over varying duty cycles and environments. Performance degradation, if any, will be monitored over the length of the LDEF mission. This information is necessary if heat pipes are to be considered for system designs where they offer benefits not available with other thermal control techniques, such as minimum weight penalty, long-life heat pipe/structural members.

Vapour phase details in the oscillatory combustion of propellants A porous plate analogue

A perforated porous plate burner is designed to scale up the vapor phase details in composite propellant combustion. A fuel vapor is passed through the pores and an oxidizer vapor is passed through the discrete perforations drilled in the plate. Discussion of the scale modeling of the vapor phase details in oscillatory combustion of composite propellants leads to the following conclusions: (1) the concept of a perforated porous plate analog for the composite propellant vapor phase combustion appears to be valid during oscillatory combustion as well; (2) the flame standoff distance can be conveniently determined with motion picture photography; (3) the flame standoff distance varies with the flow velocity during oscillatory combustion much the same way as during time-independent combustion; and (4) the overall structure of the combustion zone (flame) does not appear to vary too much from its time-independent structure during oscillatory combustion

The Pd2Si - /Pd/ - Ni - solder plated metallization system for silicon solar cells

The rationale and application of a plated metal system, Pd2Si Pd - Ni - solder, is presented. This metallization system is particularly useful on shallow p-n junction solar cells. The advantages of such plated solar cell contacts are discussed. A process sequence for applying the metallization system is outlined. A specific example is presented, including chemical plating solution formulations and detailed process step descriptions. Electrical test data for solar cells metallized with the palladium-nickel-solder system are provided.

Computational models for the nonlinear analysis of reinforced concrete plates

A finite element computational model for the nonlinear analysis of reinforced concrete solid, stiffened and cellular plates is briefly outlined. Typically, Mindlin elements are used to model the plates whereas eccentric Timoshenko elements are adopted to represent the beams. The layering technique, common in the analysis of reinforced concrete flexural systems, is incorporated in the model. The proposed model provides an inexpensive and reasonably accurate approach which can be extended for use with voided plates.

A high performance porous flat-plate solar collector

A solar collector employing a porous matrix as a solar absorber and heat exchanger is presented and its application in solar air heaters is discussed. The collector is composed of a metallic matrix with a porous surface which acts as a large set of cavity radiators; cold air flows through the matrix plate and exchanges heat with the thermally stratified layers of the matrix. A steady-state thermal analysis of the collector is used to determine collector temperature distributions for the cases of an opaque surface matrix with total absorption of solar energy at the surface, and a diathermanous matrix with successive solar energy absorption at each depth. The theoretical performance of the porous flat plate collector is shown to exceed greatly that of a solid flat plate collector using air as the working medium for any given set of operational conditions. An experimental collector constructed using commercially available, low cost steel wool as the matrix has been found to have thermal efficiencies from 73 to 86%.

Crack problems for a rectangular plate and an infinite strip

The general plane problem for an infinite strip containing multiple cracks perpendicular to its boundaries is considered. The problem is reduced to a system of singular integral equations. Two specific problems of practical interest are then studied in detail. The first problem explores the interaction effect of multiple edge cracks in a plate or beam under tension or bending. The second problem is that of a rectangular plate containing an arbitrarily oriented crack in the plane of symmetry. Particular emphasis is placed on the problem of a plate containing an edge crack and subjected to concentrated forces.

A correlation method to predict the surface pressure distribution on an infinite plate from which a jet is issuing

A correlation method to predict pressures induced on an infinite plate by a jet issuing from the plate into a subsonic free stream was developed. The complete method consists of an analytical method which models the blockage and entrainment properties of the jet and a correlation which accounts for the effects of separation. The method was developed for jet velocity ratios up to ten and for radial distances up to five diameters from the jet. Correlation curves and data comparisons are presented for jets issuing normally from a flat plate with velocity ratios one to twelve. Also, a list of references which deal with jets in a crossflow is presented.

Multiple plate hydrostatic viscous damper

A device for damping radial motion of a rotating shaft is described. The damper comprises a series of spaced plates extending in a radial direction. A hydraulic piston is utilized to place a load in these plates. Each annular plate is provided with a suitable hydrostatic bearing geometry on at least one of its faces. This structure provides a high degree of dampening in a rotor case system of turbomachinery in general. The damper is particularly useful in gas turbine engines.

On Certain Integrals which Pertain to the Forced Vibration of Plates

The various plate integrals previously considered by Crighton (1972) are directly recast in a manner that permits their systematic development near the source point; and thus to dispense with manipulation of the velocity transform. The advantage is the ease with which distributed forces over the plate are incorporated into the analysis. After the procedure is introduced in connection with a line source problem and followed by consideration of a point source, the analogous problems relative to uniformly distributed forces over strips or circular areas of the plate receive attention.

Ion plating for the future

The ion plating techniques are classified relative to the instrumental set up, evaporation media, and mode of transport. A distinction is drawn between the low vacuum (plasma) and high vacuum (ion beam) techniques. Ion plating technology is discussed at the fundamental and industrial level. At the fundamental level, the capabilities and limitations of the plasma (evaporant flux) and film characteristics are evaluated. And on the industrial level, the performance and potential uses of ion plated films are discussed.

An experimental investigation of silicon wafer surface roughness and its effect on the pull-strength of plated metals

Plated silicon wafers with surface roughness ranging from 0.4 to 130 microinches, subjected to tensile pull-strength tests, were analyzed. Results show that the measured pull-strength of plated metals decrease with increasing silicon surface roughness, effecting a weakening of the cohesive strength of the wafer, possibly caused by microcracks or 'etch pits' in the silicon surface. The mean value of pull-strength for all wafers plated with the Ni-Cu-Cu sequence exceeded the required 450 g/0.02 sq cm, and at Ra = 0.4 microinches, the mean pull-strength for the Ni-Cu-Cu and Ni-Cu wafers were 2290 and 850 g/0.02 sq cm, respectively. The development of standardized methods for measuring contact pull-strength is suggested. These results may have some bearing on solar cell arrays problems.
