Coal extrusion in the plastic state

Continuous feeding of coal in a compressing screw extruder is described as a method of introducing coal into pressurized systems. The method utilizes the property of many bituminous coals of softening at temperatures from 350 to 425 C. Coal is then fed, much in the manner of common thermoplastics, using screw extruders. Data on the viscosity and extruder parameters for extrusion of Illinois No. 6 coal are presented.

Vibrations of incompressible liquid-plastic tank combinations using a series representation of the liquid

A series representation is presented of the dynamic behavior of incompressible non-viscous liquids contained in partially filled elastic shells of revolution. Using a series in which each term satisfies exactly Laplace's equation, the liquid portion of the problem becomes an integral equation on the wetted wall of the shell. Physical insight required in selecting the terms of the series is such that selection may be readily programed on a computer. Liquid-shell vibration interaction is investigated by modifying an existing shell of revolution vibration program with the series expansion of the liquid pressure loading on the wetted shell wall. Application of the modified program is demonstrated on a hemispherical tank and a realistic scaled model of a launch vehicle tank having a more complex geometry. Comparison of the present analysis with a NASTRAN finite element analysis for a hemispherical tank, and comparison with test results for a launch vehicle tank shows excellent agreement and rapid convergence of the series representation of the liquid to the true solution.

Bonding soft rubber or plasticized elastomers to metal

Approach using bond-cover coat of unplasticized rubber between soft rubber and adhesive eliminates diffusion problem. Approach is useful in making improved seals in automobile engines, industrial and public plumbing, and in other areas using soft-rubber-to-metal bonds. Seals and gaskets made this way would not have to be replaced very often, reducing cost of maintenance.

Formulated plastic separators for soluble electrode cells

The fabrication and milling of membranes comprising a hydrochloric acid-insoluble sheet of a mixture of a rubber and a powdered ion transport material are described. The sheet can be present as a coating upon a flexible and porous substrate. These membranes can be used in oxidation-reduction electrical accumulator cells wherein the reduction of one member of a couple is accompanied by the by the oxidation of the other member of the couple on the other side of the cell and this must be accompanied by a change in chloride ion concentration in both sides.

An acoustic emission study of plastic deformation in polycrystalline aluminium

Acoustic emission experiments were performed on polycrystalline and single crystal 99.99% aluminum while undergoing tensile deformation. It was found that acoustic emission counts as a function of grain size showed a maximum value at a particular grain size. Furthermore, the slip area associated with this particular grain size corresponded to the threshold level of detectability of single dislocation slip events. The rate of decline in acoustic emission activity as grain size is increased beyond the peak value suggests that grain boundary associated dislocation sources are giving rise to the bulk of the detected acoustic emissions.

Fatigue crack growth in fiber reinforced plastics

Fatigue crack growth in fiber composites occurs by such complex modes as to frustrate efforts at developing comprehensive theories and models. Under certain loading conditions and with certain types of reinforcement, simpler modes of fatigue crack growth are observed. These modes are more amenable to modeling efforts, and the fatigue crack growth rate can be predicted in some cases. Thus, a formula for prediction of ligamented mode fatigue crack growth rate is available.

Shrinking plastic tubing and nonstandard diameters

Process allows larger-than-normal postshrink diameters without splitting. Tetrafluoroethylene tubing on mandrel is supported within hot steel pipe by several small diameter coil sections. Rising temperature of mandrel is measured via thermocouple so assembly can be removed without overshrinking (and splitting) of tubing.

Mechanism of disorder of plastic processes in tissue during prolonged hypokinesia

The subcellular structures of the myocardium, skeletal muscles, liver and kidneys of adult rats subjected to hypokinesia (in immobilization chambers) for 15, 30, and 45 days were studied. An anabolyser (retabolil) and vitamin D (a Ca metabolism regulator) were administered to two groups of rats. On the second week of hypokinesia, inhibition of synthesis processes was observed. Administration of retabolil increased protein synthesis both in the normal and hypokinesia-subjected rats; however, in the latter group, synthesis did not completely normalize, especially in the myocardium. Administration of vitamin D also stimulated protein synthesis, apparently by normalizing Ca tissue metabolism. The combined action of both preparations was the most effective in normalizing protein synthesis intensity. It was concluded that inhibition of synthesis is related to weakening of hormone synthesis induction and disorder of Ca metabolism.

Program to develop sprayed, plastically deformable compressor shroud seal materials

A study of fundamental rub behavior for ten dense sprayed materials and eight current compressor clearance materials has been conducted. A literature survey of a wide variety of metallurgical and thermophysical properties was conducted and correlated to rub behavior. Based on these results, the most promising dense rub material was Cu-9Al. Additional studies on the effects of porosity, incursion rate, blade solidity and ambient temperature were carried out on aluminum bronze (Cu-9Al-1Fe) with and without a 515B Feltmetal underlayer.

Fire test method for graphite fiber reinforced plastics

A potential problem in the use of graphite fiber reinforced resin matrix composites is the dispersal of graphite fibers during accidential fires. Airborne, electrically conductive fibers originating from the burning composites could enter and cause shorting in electrical equipment located in surrounding areas. A test method for assessing the burning characteristics of graphite fiber reinforced composites and the effectiveness of the composites in retaining the graphite fibers has been developed. The method utilizes a modified rate of heat release apparatus. The equipment and the testing procedure are described. The application of the test method to the assessment of composite materials is illustrated for two resin matrix/graphite composite systems.

Toxicity of pyrolysis gases from foam plastics

Twenty-three samples of flexible foams and twelve samples of rigid foams were evaluated for toxicity of pyrolysis gases, using the USF toxicity screening test method. Polychloroprene among the flexible foams, and polystyrene among the rigid foams, appeared to exhibit the least toxicity under these particular test conditions.

A potential problem in the use of graphite fiber reinforced resin matrix composites is the dispersal of graphite fibers during accidental fires. The method utilizes a modified Ohio State University Rate of Heat Release apparatus. The equipment and the testing procedure are described. The application of the test method to the assessment of composite materials is illustrated for two resin matrix/graphite composite systems.
