Room temperature crystal field splitting of curium resolved by circularly polarized luminescence spectroscopy

Coordination of Cm(III) with a chiral decadentate ligand N,N,N',N'-tetrakis[(6-carboxypyridin-2-yl)methyl]-1,2-diaminocyclohexane (tpadac) generated complexes with strong luminescence allowing for the unprecedented measurement of well-resolved Cm(III) circularly polarized luminescence spectra. Quantitative resolution of the electronic structure of the [Cm(tpadac)][K] complexes was achieved at room temperature, highlighting the strength of the combination of luminescence and circularly polarized luminescence spectroscopies to unravel the fundamental electronic structure of Cm(III). These results are a clear demonstration that these spectroscopies are powerful yet simple tools for the fundamental understanding of electronic structure, which opens the door to future investigations of other Cm(III) complexes in geometries relevant to nuclear applications, and even other 5f-elements.

Probing the electronic structure and dipole-bound state of the 7-azaindolide anion

We report an investigation of the electronic structure and dipole-bound state (DBS) of the cryogenically-cooled 7-azaindolide anion (7-AI − ) using high-resolution photoelectron imaging, photodetachment spectroscopy, and resonant photoelectron spectroscopy. The electron affinity of the 7-AI radical is measured to be 2.6967(8) eV (21 751 ± 6 cm −1 ). Two excited electronic states of the neutral radical are observed at 0.8 eV and 1.4 eV above the ground state. Two minor isomers of 7-AI − due to deprotonation from the α- and β-carbon on the pyrrole ring are also detected with lower adiabatic detachment energies. A DBS is observed for the 7-AI − anion at 156 cm −1 below the detachment threshold, along with 16 vibrational Feshbach resonances. Resonant two-photon photoelectron imaging reveals that the DBS is relatively long-lived. Resonant photoelectron spectroscopy via the vibrational Feshbach resonances of the DBS gives rise to rich vibrational features for the 7-AI radical not accessible in conventional photoelectron spectroscopy. Fundamental vibrational frequencies for 16 vibrational modes of the 7-AI neutral radical are measured experimentally, including 7 bending modes. The current work provides extensive experimental electronic and vibrational information for the 7-AI − anion and the 7-AI radical.

ZnGa 2 Te 4 thin-film absorbers for photoelectrochemical CO 2 reduction

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) has been considered as a promising route to convert and store solar energy into chemical fuels. It is crucial to find suitable photoelectrode materials that are photo-catalytically active and exhibit excellent photochemical stability. One of the promising contenders is ZnTe with the ∼2.26 eV band gap and prolonged stability under CO 2 RR PEC conditions. Herein, a new telluride based thin-film ZnGa 2 Te 4 photocathode with lower band gap and stronger visible light absorption compared to ZnTe is synthesized and characterized using a combinatorial sputtering technique. A two-step annealing method with excess Te supply is implemented to synthesize nearly stoichiometric ZnGa 2 Te 4 absorber material with a zincblende-derived tetragonal crystal structure confirmed by synchrotron X-ray and electron diffraction. Theoretical calculations show that ZnGa 2 Te 4 has suitable direct bandgap (∼1.86 eV) and high absorption coefficient ∼10 5 cm −1 , in agreement with experimentally prepared films. Transient absorption spectroscopy reveals the biexponential decay dynamics, with time constants, τ 1 ∼ 0.04, and τ 2 ∼ 0.65 μs in microsecond time scales and provides the optical transition pathways for this semiconductor thin film. PEC measurements show that the ZnGa 2 Te 4 photocurrent densities are comparable to the widely investigated ZnTe photocathodes or even surpass it under simulated sunlight condition. ZnGa 2 Te 4 samples demonstrate promising photoelectrochemical stability, maintaining consistent performance under illumination. The inclusion of diaryliodonium additive substantially increases its CO 2 RR selectivity to ∼60%. These findings open a new avenue for the synthesis of telluride-based thin-film photocathodes for further exploration and will motivate future research to integrate this potential photocathode material into PEC devices.

Assessing DER Network Cybersecurity Defences in a Power-Communication Co-Simulation Environment

Increasing penetrations of interoperable distributed energy resources (DER) in the electric power system are expanding the power system attack surface. Maloperation or malicious control of DER equipment can now cause substantial disturbances to grid operations. Fortunately, many options exist to defend and limit adversary impact on these newly-created DER communication networks, which typically traverse the public internet. However, implementing these security features will increase communication latency, thereby adversely impacting real-time DER grid support service effectiveness. In this work, a collection of software tools called SCEPTRE were used to create a co-simulation environment where SunSpec-compliant PV inverters were deployed as virtual machines and interconnected to simulated communication network equipment. Network segmentation, encryption, and moving target defence security features were deployed on the control network to evaluate their influence on cybersecurity metrics and power system performance. The results indicated that adding these security features did not impact DER-based grid control systems but improved the cybersecurity posture of the network when implemented appropriately.

Four-phase interleaved TCM DC-DC buck converter with matrix inductor in battery charging application

In this paper, a 1-kW DC-DC buck converter with a four-phase interleaved matrix inductor is proposed for battery charging applications. It is well-known that the DC bias on the inductor will cause high core loss as it changes the B–H characteristic. Typically, the transient conduction mode employed in high voltage applications for zero-voltageswitching of devices would cause higher inductor current ripple. The conventional approach to reduce the effect of DC bias and inductor current ripple is employing multi-phases. However, the cost and size of the converter will increase significantly. This paper proposes the matrix inductor which has a small volume and reduces the effect of the DC bias by flux sharing and flux cancellation at the same time, results in low inductor core loss. With the interleaved operations the output current ripple can be lower which is suitable for battery charging application. Besides, the comparison of the synchronous and interleaved operation is presented. A 1-kW prototype is built and the experimental results show that the peak efficiency is 99.1% and 99.2% for synchronous and interleaved control, respectively. Additionally, the output current ripple of the interleaved operation is reduced by 85% in comparison with the synchronous operation.

The DESI DR1 peculiar velocity survey: Growth rate measurements from the galaxy power spectrum

The large-scale structure of the Universe and its evolution encapsulate a wealth of cosmological information. A powerful means of unlocking this knowledge lies in measuring the auto-power spectrum and/or the cross-power spectrum of the galaxy density and momentum fields, followed by the estimation of cosmological parameters based on these spectrum measurements. In this study, we generalize the cross-power spectrum model to accommodate scenarios in which the density and momentum fields are derived from distinct galaxy surveys. The growth rate of the large-scale structures of the Universe, commonly represented as fσ 8 , was extracted by jointly fitting the monopole and quadrupole moments of the auto-density power spectrum, the monopole of the auto-momentum power spectrum, and the dipole of the cross-power spectrum. Our estimators, theoretical models, and parameter-fitting framework were tested using mocks, confirming their robustness and accuracy in retrieving the fiducial growth rate from simulation. These techniques were then applied to analyse the power spectrum of the DESI Bright Galaxy Survey and Peculiar Velocity Survey. The fit result of the growth rate is fσ8 = 0.440$^{+0.080}_{−0.096}$ at effective redshift zeff = 0.07. By synthesizing the fitting outcomes from correlation functions, maximum likelihood estimation, and the power spectrum, a consensus value is yielded of fσ 8 (z eff = 0.07) = 0.450$^{+0.055}_{−0.055}$, and correspondingly we obtain γ = 0.580$^{+0.110}_{−0.110}$, Ω m = 0.301$^{+0.011}_{−0.011}$, and σ 8 = 0.834$^{+0.032}_{−0.032}$. The measured fσ8 and γ are consistent with the prediction of the Λ cold dark matter model and general relativity.

Generalized Relationship Linking Water Balance and Vegetation Productivity across Site-to-Regional Scales

Evapotranspiration (ET) is a pivotal component in catchment-scale water balance and is essential for informed watershed management. Nevertheless, uncertainties in ET observation or modeling have been hindering effective water resources management. This study addresses this gap by establishing a robust, generalized linear relationship between ET and gross primary productivity (GPP) at the catchment scale. We test the linearity of the relationships between monthly GPP and ET data at 380 near-natural catchments across various climatic and landscape conditions in the contiguous U.S., yielding Pearson’s r ≥ 0.6 for 97% of the 380 catchments. We then develop a regionalization strategy to parameterize this GPP-ET relationship at the catchment scale by identifying and utilizing the linkages between the parameter values and extensively available hydroclimatic and landscape data. We demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed GPP-ET relationship and parameter regionalization strategy by their combined predictive capacity, where the predicted monthly GPP matches well with remote-sensing-based GPP product, achieving Kling-Gupta Efficient (KGE) values ≥ 0.5 for 92% of the catchments. In addition, we verify the relationship and its parameter regionalization at 35 AmeriFlux sites with KGE ≥ 0.5 for 25 sites, suggesting that the new relationship is transferable across the site, catchment, and regional scales. Furthermore, our findings are valuable for improving remote-sensing-based estimation of monthly ET and diagnosing coupled water–carbon simulations in land surface and Earth system models.

Global geodesic acoustic mode in an ideal magnetohydrodynamic tokamak plasma

A concise and transparent second order ordinary differential equation (ODE) describing the radial structure of the global geodesic acoustic mode (GAM) is analytically presented in a low-β tokamak plasma. The large-aspect-ratio and circular cross section are assumed to linearize the ideal magnetohydrodynamic equations. We show clearly how finite β-dependent terms affect the global GAM frequency and radial mode structure. Here, a typical Wentzel–Kramers–Brillouin form of solution is found for some reversed shear equilibria. For some other equilibria with lower β, even also in a reversed shear tokamak, the GAM continuum is upraised by the high order β-dependent terms so that its maximum is beyond ω G , where ω G is the classical local frequency of GAM. As a result, no self-consistent solution to the ODE can be found.

Photodetachment spectroscopy and resonant photoelectron imaging of the 2-naphthoxide anion via dipole-bound excited states

We report a photodetachment spectroscopy and high-resolution resonant photoelectron imaging study of cryogenically-cooled 2-naphthoxide anions (C 10 H 7 O - ). The photodetachment spectrum revealed a dipole-bound state (DBS) 202(4) cm -1 below the detachment threshold and thirty-eight resonances corresponding to the vibrational levels of the DBS. By tuning the detachment laser to these above-threshold resonances, we obtained thirty-eight resonantly-enhanced photoelectron spectra, which were highly non-Franck-Condon as a result of mode-selective vibrational auto-detachment from the DBS. The resonances were assigned by comparing the resonant and non-resonant photoelectron spectra, assisted by the computed vibrational frequencies. Specifically, vibrational features with low Franck-Condon factors or from Franck-Condon-forbidden vibrational modes were significantly enhanced in the resonant photoelectron spectra, resulting in much richer spectroscopic information. The electron affinity of the 2-naphthoxy radical was measured accurately to be 19,387(4) cm -1 or 2.4037(5) eV. In addition, a total of seventeen vibrational frequencies were obtained for the 2-naphthoxy radical. In particular, seven Franck-Condon-forbidden out-of-plane bending modes, including the two lowest frequency modes (ν 48 at 102 cm -1 and ν47 at 171 cm -1 ), were observed, demonstrating the advantages of combining photodetachment spectroscopy and resonant photoelectron spectroscopy in obtaining vibrational information for polar radical species via DBS.

GaN/AlGaN 2DEGs in the quantum regime: Magneto-transport and photoluminescence to 60 tesla

Here, using high magnetic fields up to 60 T, we report magneto-transport and photoluminescence (PL) studies of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in a GaN/AlGaN heterojunction grown by molecular-beam epitaxy. Transport measurements demonstrate that the quantum limit can be exceeded (Landau level filling factor v <1) and show evidence for the v =2/3 fractional quantum Hall state. Simultaneous optical and transport measurements reveal synchronous quantum oscillations of both the PL intensity and the longitudinal resistivity in the integer quantum Hall regime. PL spectra directly reveal the dispersion of occupied Landau levels in the 2DEG and, therefore, the electron mass. These results demonstrate the utility of high (pulsed) magnetic fields for detailed measurements of quantum phenomena in high-density 2DEGs.
