A continuation of base-line studies for environmentally monitoring space transportation systems at John F. Kennedy Space Center. Executive summary

Studies conducted in and around John F. Kennedy Space Center, Merrit Island, Florida were designed to establish baseline conditions for various attributes of the biotic and abiotic environment. Features were described and quantitatively measured. Certain condition were found to be appropriate for the detection and assessment of possible environmental perturbations caused by future NASA activities. These include plant communities, mammal populations, rainfall chemistry, fish populations, and the status of rare and endangered species. On the basis of statistical analysis of quantitative data and logistic considerations, it was possible to refine the kinds and amounts of measurements needed to evaluate perturbations in selected environmental components.

Orbit transfer vehicle engine study, phase A extension. Volume 1: Executive summary

A 1980 state-of-the-art advanced expander engine was configured that delivers near-optimum payload-performance and exhibits the simplicity reliability, and life characteristics required of the OTV mission. Engine optimization studies indicate that the performance of the conventional expander cycle engine can be improved substantially through combustion chamber surface area enhancement, thermal enhancement, turbine regeneration, and power cycle efficiency enhancement procedures. The 20K lb. thrust staged combustion engine can be adapted to operate at extended periods in the 1 to 2K lb. thrust regime. The study results indicate that long-life, high performnce operation in the low thrust mode can be achieved with minimum modifications (kitting) of the engine. Although the main contribution to mission success and crew safety stems from propulsion system redundancy, significant reliability can be gained from engine component redundancy, specific engine design features ensuring safety and reliability, including an engine health monitoring system, and from a total program approach to safety and reliability, such as that presently applied to the space shuttle.

Solar Power Satellite Microwave Power Transmission System Description Executive Summary

The history of the concept of microwave power beaming to Earth is reviewed with emphasis on transmission frequency selection. Constraints on the system power level results from (1) required rejection of waste heat resulting from inefficiencies in the cover conversion of dc electric power to microwave power; (2) the rf power intensity in the ionosphere; and (3) the effect of sidelobe level on aperture illumination factors. Transmitter arrangement, the power distribution system, attitude control, subarrays, waveguides, and alignment are discussed.

Geostationary platform systems concepts definition study. Volume 1: Executive summary

The results of a geostationary platform concept analysis are summarized. Mission and payloads definition, concept selection, the requirements of an experimental platform, supporting research and technology, and the Space Transportation System interface requirements are addressed. It is concluded that platforms represent a logical extension of current trends toward larger, more complex, multifrequency satellites. Geostationary platforms offer significant cost savings compared to individual satellites, with the majority of these economies being realized with single Shuttle launched platforms. Further cost savings can be realized, however, by having larger platforms. Platforms accommodating communications equipment that operates at multiple frequencies and which provide larger scale frequency reuse through the use of large aperture multibeam antennas and onboard switching maximize the useful capacity of the orbital arc and frequency spectrum. Projections of market demand indicate that such conservation measures are clearly essential if orderly growth is to be provided for. In addition, it is pointed out that a NASA experimental platform is required to demonstrate the technologies necessary for operational geostationary platforms of the 1990's.

Optical data transmission technology for fixed and drag-on STS payloads umbilicals. Volume 1: Executive summary

The feasibility of using optical data handling methods to transmit payload checkout and telemetry is discussed. Optical communications are superior to conventional communication systems for the following reasons: high data capacity optical channels; small and light weight optical cables; and optical signal immunity to electromagnetic interference. Task number one analyzed the ground checkout data requirements that may be expected from the payload community. Task number two selected the optical approach based on the interface requirements, the location of the interface, the amount of time required to reconfigure hardware, and the method of transporting the optical signal. Task number three surveyed and selected optical components for the two payload data link. Task number four makes a qualitative comparison of the conventional electrical communication system and the proposed optical communication system.
